ok Taylor there's about a billion other ways you could have disseminated that cure to her. you could have had a bug coat itself in your sweat and then fly into her mouth when she was talking or something and you wouldn't have had to risk getting close enough for her to seriously injure or murder you. you just wanted an excuse to kiss the hot feral doggirl you've been engaging in toxic yuri with for the last 20 chapters

reading worm is an experience for many reasons but especially the way wildbow manages to write a story that depicts women with incredible nuance struggling to navigate a system that was designed to fail them from the start in variety of ways (taylor facing vicious harassment for failing to meet societal standards and being seen as weak + her internalized misogyny, amy's whole deal but especially the expectation on her that she will be the healer at her own expense, victoria "cop" dallon embracing expectations and becoming a weapon for the state, aisha fighting to be noticed as a human being and not a prop or an inconvenience, rachel rejecting it altogether) that critiques the social infrastructure enabling and encouraging their suffering and then he turns around implies or even outright says shit like "women are inherently more emotional, lesbianism that isn't predatory is pandering, and rachel is ugly and disgusting for being butch" like hello. how did you manage to write this book. who even are you

“Even my most loyal. Bitch of a thing to do. Not the actual procedure of sticking the things inside their heads. After the first twenty, I could do the surgeries with my eyes closed. Literally. I actually did a few that way.”
i'm sure there's at least some of it out there that i'm not aware of, but worm is genuinely the only superpowered media i can think of off the top of my head where technology-based superpowers feel this meaningful. tinkers in worm aren't just people toting around sci-fi weapons that feel ubiquitous in the setting, they're the only people who have those weapons, and they have them because they're breaking the rules for how technology should work on a very fundamental and unnerving level. i would like to hear someone with more complete knowledge of the genre at large talk about this (@artbyblastweave ?) because something about how tinkers are written in worm feels special to me. like, from my not-very-into-cape-media PoV it feels like in most other works people w/ the tech-based powers aren't explicitly doing anything special--it's typically presented as if what they're doing is fully plausible within the normal bounds of the universe in question, and their reliance on it might even make them less interesting or more vulnerable than people with "real" superpowers. batman, iron man, etc. and worm sidesteps this entirely by not only giving tinkers extremely inventive, iconic, and powerful toolkits, but by constantly casually reinforcing that what they're able to do is just as unnatural as someone shapeshifting or shooting lasers. bakuda doing brain surgery with her eyes closed! riley making functioning blood replacement out of shit she scrounged up in her kitchen! it doesn't matter if you take the tech away, because their schtick as a cape isn't having the money to put together a purportedly-regular power suit or bag of gadgets, it's having the ability to build a bomb with a couple of nails and the lint in their pocket in the 5 minutes someones back was turned. i simply cannot go back to media where people with gadget-based cape identities don't textually have inhuman capabilities with technology after reading worm, because worm just Does It Better

the thing about me is that I will absolutely shamelessly give my favorite little minor character who has cubed me a disproportionate amount of narrative significance than he actually has, BUT THE PROBLEM WITH THAT is that he (Clockblocker) actually honestly and truly DOES have one of the biggest impacts of any character.
like i know they were not giving out medals for the sake of preventing infighting after the leviathan fight, but Clockblocker damn well deserves one because quite literally everyone would have died had he not frozen the Titanic Waterbending Godzilla in time for several whole minutes allowing the remaining capes critical time to re-strategize and hold out for Scion. Additionally. everyone Also would have died had Skitter not been able to utilize his power to slice That Thang (Echidna) in twain. Two (2) S-Class threats within months of each other and he turned the tides on both of them.
it’s like. it’s honestly a testament to what Tattletale was saying about how a lot of parahumans never really get the chance to understand the full extent of their powers because they’re never under the right circumstances to do so. because if you think about it purely in situations like the bank heist or party crash early on in the book, Clockblocker’s power really isn’t anything to write home about. and if they lived in a reality where things like that were the biggest threats around he would probably stay that way!
but they don’t live in that reality. they DO live in a world with towering kaiju endbringers that threaten the planet every three months and they DO live in a world where monstrous parahuman accidents like echidna are likely to pop up, and it’s because of this product of circumstance that you can make a legitimate case for Clockblocker having one of the strongest powers in terms of utility. he lives in a reality where his niche is allowed to shine!
and it’s this kinda thinking that makes the fact that he is—at the end of the day—Just A Minor Character, so incredibly compelling because it further illustrates the idea that This Could Be Anybody. under the right circumstances, any parahuman could find their otherwise mid-level power suddenly become the most pivotal role in a survival setting. or the most dangerous! it opens up the floor to a wealth of possibilities.
like say what you want, and i do concede that of course my darling boy Dennis doesn’t hold the same narrative significance that any of the major characters do, but when you look at his role in the story from this perspective, He Really Is Kind Of A Big Deal.

Now that I've known him for a few chapters, you know what someone with the power to "control destinies" really sounds like? An author.
A man who knows capes from all over the place, yet focuses specifically on Brockton Bay and nowhere else as the place to exert his influence. A man who enables the Undersiders to operate and to win, but does so from afar without showing his face or even letting the people who work for him know his identity.
A man who can flip coins and have them land however he wants, every time. A man who can arrange the worst possible coincidences of timing between Taylor and Rachel embarrassing E88 recruits and a massive attack on the E88 leadership launched out of nowhere. A man whose costume is pure black emptiness except for a snake winding all around, as if he's not even there himself, even as the winding path of destiny is overlaid on him and could not exist on its own.
A man who admits that he is not a good man, but does care about the city, in his own self-serving, egotistic way -- perhaps because without exerting his power to write the destinies of Brockton Bay, no one would ever know who he is at all, or even know a thing about the world his city is in. Worm is, after all, the first parahumans web serial.
I am proposing that Coil is in fact a self-insert.
And therefore, my recommendation is: Taylor, get his ass. Kill Wildbow, and then be as gay as you know you were always meant to be.

the tinker/thinker divide is... if you put two tinkers in a room together theyll probably leave the room with a device that breaks three laws of physics and either solves world hunger or will kill two thousand people minimum. if you put two thinkers in a room together theyll argue for three hours straight and then probably one of them will shoot the other through the head

“Holy fuck,” Lisa said, slapping the sides of the steering wheel with her hands. I think if the van had been moving, she would have hit the brakes for emphasis. Traffic was starting to move, though, so she started up the car and put it into gear, “Twice, you bring up the Endbringers in as many minutes. You’re being morbid. What’s going on?”
i love this both as a category five Taylor Moment and a worldbuilding piece. like, this is functionally the same as randomly and persistently bringing up tornadoes or forest fires during a conversation. much like tornadoes and forest fires, endbringers are something you see on the news, go "huh, that sucks for the victims" about, and then forget about because you are going on with your day. you rationally understand they could happen to you, but you don't think they ever really will. you don't expect to come home and find your house burnt down, and you don't expect to hear sirens warning that leviathan is incoming. the fact that it's Weird for taylor to keep bringing it up, the fact that it's bizarre and morbid in the same way randomly going "ah yes....like forest fires" twice in a row during a conversation is bizarre and morbid, and the fact that taylor is talking about them like they're the same thing as capes like nilbog or heartbreaker are all such fun ways of indicating what the average earth bet citizen's relationship is to the concept of the endbringers. in two years taylor will have flung herself headfirst into these walking natural disaster scenarios over and over again, but for now, she's just some suicidal 15yo girl in brockton who can't even imagine that they're not human
