Kenta & Pete pt 2

From the very beginning of their relationship, Pete used his status to establish himself as Kenta's protector. This is not uncommon for people living with an abuser, and this is something that really strikes me as a key part of Pete's character. He uses his privilege to help people.

When Babe left Tony's house, he did so after finding out that Tony had been the reason behind Babe's family falling apart, that Tony was a saboteur rather than the benefactor he posed as. Babe didn't learn about the other children being sold until Charlie told him about it.

But Pete finds out while he is still living under Tony's roof, and that is what prompts him to leave. He doesn't confront Tony about it, he simply leaves. Because this is something that he can't just stand by and watch happen. This goes beyond shielding someone from punishment. His status as an enigma won't help, it won't end the cycle, so he leaves. And as we know, he spends the rest of his life building up the power he needs to put a stop to these children being sold off.

But Kenta, who must know Pete so well at this point, sees it coming and tries to stop him. For Kenta, Tony's house is his entire world. Tony is the one who gave him life.

He wasn't even allowed outside without permission. He doesn't have any privileges, he's there as a mere accessory to the needs of others.

He's been conditioned to believe that he owes everything to Tony. He is part of this house, and this is where he feels he belongs.

But if Pete leaves, he takes the only good thing in Kenta's life.

What goes unsaid is that rather than Tony being hurt by Pete’s actions, it’s Kenta who will be hurt if Pete leaves.

I don't know yet whether or not Pete reciprocated Kenta's feelings, but I do think that the kiss is told from Kenta's perspective, and I think Kenta took Pete's silence as rejection. So when Pete leaves, he appeals to their brotherly bond instead. We will no longer be phi and nong.

And in Kenta's eyes, it wasn't enough. He wasn't enough for Pete to stay. Pete left to save the others, when he had promised to protect Kenta.

And how much abuse has Kenta suffered since Pete left? To him, he was abandoned and betrayed.

But for Pete, he wanted Kenta to make a decision for himself. Kenta views himself as a tool, an accessory. Objects don't make decisions.

But Pete views him as a friend, as a good person. Kenta is not the object that Tony treats him as. He has wants and desires, he has feelings, and Pete wants Kenta to understand that.

Kenta wanted Pete to stay, and Pete wanted Kenta to leave, and it is tragedy that neither of these things happened. This is yet another example of broken family that Pit Babe has given us.

Kenta thinks it is too late for him to change, even if he is constantly being torn apart by the things he feels he must do, and by the abuse he continues to endure.

But Pete thinks it is never too late for someone to change. He still hasn't given up on Kenta, and how that must burn—to have someone believe in you when you have never believed in yourself.

Kenta has spent years repressing his reactions to everything that he has endured and witnessed and taken part in. He is putting everything into convincing himself that he doesn't care, that he can even kill his childhood love as long as it is for the one person who has given him purpose.

But he does care, he cares so much, and he is closer to his breaking point than we've ever seen him before.

Kenta & Pete pt 1

I am splitting this into multiple posts because I have too many fucking emotions. This episode provided so much insight into both of their characters, as well as their relationship with each other.

I'm gonna start off talking about Kenta’s outfits because I have been curious for a while about Kenta wearing a different outfit from the other kids during Babe's flashback, and I've wanted to know how far back that visual distinction went. How long has he been dyed in black for?

So it felt like a punch to the gut to find that:

He's always been separate from the others. A powerless, "useless" person, not given the privileges of the alphas.

He wasn't always dressed in black. He wore blue, once. He wore white, once.

But somewhere along the way, that brightness disappears. He becomes a mere shadow, blending into the walls of the house itself. The imagery of this shot fucking kills me, y'all.

In fact, the only color left in Kenta's life is Pete himself.

Pete, who put a smile on Kenta's face. (A SMILE!!!!!!!!! LOOK AT HIM!!!!!!)

Pete, who left Kenta behind.

Kenta has spent the rest of his life in black, with only the tiniest piece of blue left on his wrist, just the barest hint of what he carries in his heart. I am not okay and in fact I will never be okay.

Can we talk about Kenta’s visible stress levels in episode 11? This is a man who keeps his mask locked down so tight that the only time we’ve seen it crack where someone else could see is when Tony hit him hard enough to draw blood.

Here we see him SMOKING INSIDE LIKE A MADMAN?? I will say that I think Kenta smokes the most out of the cast (understandable) in proportion to his screentime, since this is at least the fourth time I recall seeing him smoke. But this is definitely the first it’s happened indoors, and he’s not even in the privacy of his own room.

But he IS in the same spot where Pete left him behind, which to me implies he’s stressed enough to be desperate for a smoke but cannot get himself to leave this stairwell. If he leaves, he won’t stop until he reaches Pete.

Then, after the first flashback, his bangs are visibly mussed, when they were fine a moment earlier. So he ran a hand through his hair before pulling out the knife. This is the first time we’ve seen him this unkempt.

The biggest thing to me though is just how red-faced and sweaty he is during the fight with Pete, when Pete’s face is perfectly dry. I do think Pete was likely going easy on him, whereas Kenta was putting in his entire effort, but jesus he looks like he just ran 5k.

This is him not even two minutes earlier, and he looks fine. Either Pete’s ability has done something to make him start sweating buckets (insert heat jokes here oh god what if that’s what it actually is I’ve just derailed my entire train of thought Pete’s enigma powers made Kenta all flushed and sweaty what the FUCK) or it’s like his entire body is rejecting what he’s trying to force himself to do OR HE’S GOING INTO HEAT ABDJFJF

Playing a movie in my head where Pete makes Kenta go into heat with his magic enigma dick (I’m guessing/making this up no book spoilers plz), and then Pete and Kim take turns edging Kenta until he’s crying.

Kenta isn’t prone to asking for things in bed (because he feels he doesn’t deserve it and has been taught to just accept what he gets), but eventually he breaks and begs for release. Kim kisses him sweetly on the temple and thanks Kenta for asking for what he wants, and then he and Pete give it to him. Over and over and over again.
