what’s the relationship like between Paulie/Ellie and Jason/Ellie at the start of the story? (Post prologue time skip)

paulie and ellie met when they were young children, and even when ellie was forbidden to leave the castle gates (with the exception of leaving for royal duties) paulie continued to find a way to see him! even going as far as to sneak ellie out once, and being lucky enough to not be caught by anyone that would report them.

post prologue time skip at the start of the story, ellie is 20 and paulie is 22! they have been seeing eachother for so long at this point that they have formed a routine involving the cooperation of some royal guards to allow them to meet.

ellie has a balcony to his room that paulie sneaks up to, or they meet somewhere else private within the castle grounds. at this point paulie has realized he is interested in ellie romantically, while ellie has only internally questioned their relationship a few times.

their dynamic in the beginning is kind of like. blink and you'll miss it flirting with some kind of unspoken tension that is not exactly a positive thing. that tension is explored more later on but as for the beginning, theres a lot of longing glances and hands brushing n all that budding romance crap >w>

as for 26 yo jason and 20 yo ellie, their dynamic begins somewhat normally, all things considered. ellie likes to follow jason around often and see what he's up to, and jason doesn't mind the company of his brother. it's not until their mother's health begins to decline and jason's frequent lucid dreams turn into uncontrollable nightmares that their dynamic begins to shift.

ellie is also struggling with untreated trauma and mental illness at this time, along with his continuous extreme isolation. he is less than prepared to deal with whatever it is going on with jason, who refuses to acknowledge any potential problems going on.

still, ellie tries to remain optimistic, insisting that they can get through anything together. jason, who is usually gentle with eliot and careful not to hurt his feelings, snaps at eliot. from this point on their relationship really falls apart until they're forced to talk about EVERYTHING that went unsaid for many years, which is later on in the story ^_^ !!
