The baby chicks, now 2 weeks old, seem to be getting used to the flock. Mana hen keeps them real close though. Looks like some predator got into my coop and got a mouthful of feathers on Saturday. We had a little incident today. I threw the stick a little too far into the strong currents of the #wenatcheeriver and Akela ended up a castaway on the island. A few rafters floated by and then a large rowboat, they offered to take me across to him but the current was too fast for them to get to me. Finally I capitalized on his fear of abandonment and started walking downriver with Madison. He panicked and ventured across, the current carrying him downstream pretty fast but he made it! That rascal scrambled up the bank and burst onto the trail so happy to shake the river off and fall asleep in the truck. The river felt great today but I don’t think I would have made that crossing, despite my vast experience in rescuing dogs from rivers. #adogslife #plainwashington #skadisuite #leavenworthwa #cascades #catahoula #cascademountains

Well, the farm is now roosterless. A few weeks ago I dispatched the young troublemaker, and alas he did not taste very good to me but the dogs thought differently. After that experience I gave Twisp and the last one to a #goodhome where they were barbecued up that very night. It was not as hard to kill them as I thought it would be. My only wish was that it was done as quickly and humanely as possible. It’s so quiet around here without that incessant, annoying crowing. And my hens are healing from being constantly assaulted. This #homesteading stuff is not always easy. Introducing baby chicks to an established flock is one issue; dealing with an aggressive rooster and too many damn roosters crowing in harmony is another.
