Joel, throwing her nearly head first into a wall when they first meet, ‘you need to stop talking about this kid like she’s got some kind of life in front of her’, points a gun right at her face when they meet, ‘we keep our histories to ourselves’, has in itchy trigger finger for her their first days together, “you’re cargo”, Miller.
But it’s also Joel, ‘Ellie. Are you okay?’, who buries the boys bodies for her, ‘It was my fault. You shouldn’t have had to. And I’m sorry’, gives her the last bits of his food, ‘They’re not gonna hit you’, giggling like a schoolgirl at her puns, ‘that’s enough for today’, gives her his jacket when she’s asleep because she’s probably cold, knows exactly what she’s thinking with a glance, ‘no one’s gonna find us’, holding her hands in place on her gun way longer than he needed to, ‘are you okay? You’re not hurt? Nothing?’, reaches over her to grab and show her what a seatbelt is even though he could’ve just pointed to it, searches her out while being shot at and doesn’t take his arm back from her shoulders until she’s safe behind cover, looks at his watch because she reminds him a little too much of Sarah sometimes, Miller. Joel, wholeheartedly ready to embrace Ellie on the floor after Sam is shot, Miller.
