Finished poppy war!!! It was very good but also a lot more graphic than I expected there are some detailed depictions of genocide and war and all the bad things that go along with that. So be wary and check trigger warnings online. But yeah I’m excited to see where this is going and I love the world building. I’m also really invested in Rin’s character and journey. I like how morally grey she is and I can’t even imagine how she’s about to deal with Altan’s death in the next book

Which is the worse fate in a Rebecca Kuang book? To die a horrible death at the hands of your loved ones? Or to be the sole survivor of what was once a tightly knit found family?

Gentle reminder than Chen Kitay does know how to fight and is not a clumsy soft boy. He was good enough at material arts that he could have pledged combat if he hadn’t thrown his fight against Nezha - and he gave up because he knew Nezha would win either way and he didn’t want to get beat up.
Rin is the person who only sees Kitay for his good qualities and regularly forgets that he is a very capable soldier, even if his true worth places him in the war room.
But Chen Kitay can fight. And he will kill.

(unreasonably long) list of reasons why i need a full trilogy about the cike pre-tpw:
1) THE 3 DAYS IN THAT GODFORSAKEN VALLEY
2) and you know how the reason altan took chaghan to the aforementioned valley was that chaghan was being a bitch. yeah i would do anything to read about chaghan being a bitch
(not that he wasn't a bitch in tpw, i just need more of him being a bitch)
3) how did everyone else join the cike!!!! baji, suni, RAMSA!!!!!, enki etc.
4) all the past cike members we learn close to nothing about from the books?? tyr, feylen, huleinin??? anyone else who's not even mentioned????
5) qara and chaghan joining the cike. seriously they were like 11 years old i need context??? i need tiny little chaghan freaking everyone out
6) the training process that rin never got to go through
7) plus ramsa blowing shit up!
8) I WANT QARA AND ALTAN TO INTERACT MORE PLEASE
9) seriously their potential dynamic is everything to me. i have a fanfic where they dispose of a body together they have SO much potential
10) more of baji, suni and ramsa's friendship pls
11) i understand ramsa joining the cike (10ish y/o pyromaniac that loves exploding things and will otherwise go to prison, makes some sense) but enki??? someone explain how he ended up there???
12) at some point in tpw it is mentioned that the cike took an overseas mission once and they completely fucked it up. GIVE IT TO ME.
13) i need a cohesive fucking timeline of the cike for my fics. genuinely every fic i write goes a completely different direction because rebecca, the books and the wiki completely disagree with each other
14) seriously like. my brain is failing to understand how feylen and ramsa co-existed in the division tbh. also how did we decide that feylen was commander once when it was never mentioned??? I NEED A TIMELINE
15) chaghan and altan's relationship over time,,, pls,,,, i can't keep pulling scenes out of my ass for much longer ms rebecca i'm begging tell us what happeend
16) i need light-hearted, wholesome scenes!!!! i need qara making fun of chaghan for his obsession with altan, and baji and ramsa wrestling whenever one of them cheats in whatever game they play, i need tyr to just be done with all of them!!!!!!!!!!
17) MORE OF QARA'S DRY HUMOUR PLS she's fucking hilarious and no one ever acknowledges that
like that scene in tdr where they meet bekter and she says they're not proud of being related to him??? i was crying it was so funny
18) just the cike being as peaceful and happy as they could ever be tbh

“Nezha stopped and turned to face her. Her heart skipped a beat. He was so beautiful then, standing right in the space of the road where a beam of moonlight fell across his face, illuminating one side and casting long shadows on the other. He looked like glazed porcelain, preserved glass. He was a sculptor’s approximation of a person, not human himself. He can’t be real, she thought. A boy made of flesh and bone could not be so painfully lovely, so free of any blemish or flaw.”
rin is down BAD

K I'm reading poppy war for the first time (please don't spoil it I just want to throw out an idea) and in at the part where rin and kitay are on holiday and they're talking about the puppet show and the trifecta and whatnot
and they're talking about shamans and cike and I was like...
is jiang the gatekeeper?
cause I mean... it would explain a lot, but also I'm not really sure, but again I don't want someone to tell me I just want to throw out the idea and feel vindicated when if I'm right

absolutely genius of rf kuang to elaborate on virtually nothing about speer's culture. the only things said about speer are "speerlies are mindless savages" and "speerlies are most definitely not mindless savages". there are no deep dives, no explanations of their way of life, nothing beyond the glimpses that disproves nikan's belief that they are nothing but a violent group. we saw that they had leaders that cared about their people and children. we saw that they are people who found joy in life. but that's really not much.
this emphasizes the horror of genocide. millenia of culture and history, individual lives filled with love, pain, and passion, just completely wiped away. there were only two surviving speerlies. one of them was too young when he was taken away, and probably doesn't remember much. the things he did remember was also probably buried under years of abuse and drugs people were plying him with. the other one didn't even know she was from speer until the last few months of her life, and there was really no one around to teach her about their culture. and if there was, life as she knows it was falling apart. learning about her dead people's culture probably didn't even cross her mind.
without saying any of these things and by intentionally leaving readers in the dark about what speer was truly like, rf kuang said so much about the horrors of genocide. by not saying anything, she said everything. she did the "show me, don't tell me" tip for writers and it was brilliant.
we will never learn most of speer's culture and history and that was the point.

end of the burning god was CRAZY!!!!! I was pretty lukewarm on the Poppy War series in general and tbh a large part of it was bc I thought it would get the “Rin wins the war and then gets to be Emperor and She’s Suddenly a Good Leader” but I should’ve trusted Kuang more. That Ending really cemented the whole story and I think it’ll be a lot better overall on reread. Damnnnnn. Seeing Rin’s ego get broken down as she faced the cost and horrors of war was great. Watching her take the same path as the Trifecta and becoming increasingly paranoid was so well done. And her decision in the end, to break the cycle and give her country a chance, was way more impactful for it.
