“That old man kicked our asses, Dutch,” Bobby warned.

Dutch grumbled agreement while Jimmy and Tommy elbowed him, laughing.

“This is our chance to have a dojo again, chuckleheads. We’re gonna apologize to him and Daniel and we’re going to be nice. Johnny, are you listening?”

Johnny had stopped listening as soon as Daniel walked into the yard. Dark eyes watched him. Johnny’s lips twitched into a small smile, his first in weeks. To his surprise, Daniel smiled back.

“Yeah,” Johnny said softly. “Nice.”

But before he’d ditched the easy-going California lifestyle for the bright lights and fast pace of New York City, Johnny had tended bar at some of the swankiest locations in California. He’d served governors, politicians, presidents—his personal favorite had been that blonde chick with the famous rack that everyone loved, from the beach show where everyone ran around in speedos and bathing suits. Pairing: first shades of teen!LawRusso 

Six weeks after the tournament, Johnny shows up to train with Mr. Miyagi.

It starts about as well as Daniel anticipated. 

Johnny’s vitriolic, striking first branded into him. He’s impressive, if not infuriating.

His knee is barely healed; Johnny’s bruises barely faded. 

One week in, Miyagi puts them on the wheel. They spend three days more wet than dry. Day four, Daniel’s exhausted, hurting. Just when he thinks he can’t climb back up one more time, Johnny’s lightning reflexes catch him. Daniel stills, trusting. 

They stand and breathe together, holding onto one another, perfectly balanced for the very first time.

Daniel hauls him out of the ocean and Johnny is furious. They fall to the sand, a tangle of swinging limbs.

“What the fuck are you doin’, Johnny?”

“Minding my business like you should do!”

“Minding your business neck deep in water?”

“Let me go, LaRusso,” Johnny says.

He means it to be a demand; it comes out a whisper.

Daniel pins him to the sand, his body warm against Johnny’s, cold from so long in the water.

“You are not going back,” Daniel growls.

Johnny’s breath catches and tears fill his eyes.

Daniel’s expression softens. “You’re not going back.”

Johnny set his clippers down to run his hand through his hair. He frowned at the tiny plant in front of him. “I still don’t know what this has to do with karate.” 

Daniel shrugged. “It’s about focus. And trusting yourself.” 

Johnny swallowed and flexed his fingers. Daniel glanced around before slipping a hand in his and lacing their fingers together. 

“Patience, Johnny-san.” Daniel said seriously. 

Johnny rolled his eyes but took a deep breath. He squeezed Daniel’s fingers before picking up the clippers to try again.

Bobby arrived at the dojo, bruised and bloodied.

“Sensei took Johnny. “

A brief explanation and they took off, Daniel driving like a demon.

They found him where Bobby guided, a stretch of train track obscured by trees, Johnny tied to the track.

Daniel parked the car and they raced to Johnny. The train horn blared.

“Get out of here,” Johnny begged.

“I’m not leaving you,” Daniel said.

“Neither of us will.” Bobby agreed.

They worked frantically to free him, yanking Johnny up and tumbling down the embankment. They laid there all together, Bobby and Daniel bracketed around Johnny’s trembling body.
