Raven you literally did not have to go this hard for this art!!!! I love it so much!!!!! 🥺😭💖💖💖 I almost started tearing up in public when I saw this sjjddk the caa fundamentally changed who I am as a person and it's just strange to me to see it so consistently highly rated but not seeing people talk about it constantly in the tags, so needless to say I'm ALSO super happy to have an ant friend 😭 ESPECIALLY someone who also has Thoughts on pouf since so many people didn't like him, he is just The Guy Ever to me and I'm so so glad you also see it,, must also say that the more I see meruem the funnier he gets, he is so point blank and blunt and the more he just Says Things the more I lose my mind jshdjfhd thank you so much for the boy I am setting him as my phone background as we speak, ants fully rewired my brain and I'm so glad to have someone else to talk about it with + I'm so glad to be a part of you feeling so accepted within the hxh fanbase 😭💕
As for my day, it was pretty good! I went to a state park and got to hang around outside and hike for a few hours, and it's REALLY making me wanna look more formally into a conservation career 😫 I nearly got rained out in the end but it was still a gorgeous day to head out!

#53: The Curveball That Blew Our Beach House Timeline
Sherry has taken on a new side job that I’m steering clear of, and – spoiler alert – it has already given her a good excuse to go shopping. Plus, we’ve missed our goal of being able to spend a night at the beach house by the start of summer, and it’s all due to something we never could’ve anticipated (or prevented). We also find out which design trends most people are ready to be done with (shiplap? succulents? decorative poufs? *gasp!*) and you’ll hear what annoying outdoor to-do list item I checked off my list for Father’s Day. And – oh, look! A deer!

What’s New
Above is an after photo of the house Sherry “lightly staged” (no big furniture changes – just paring down, rearranging, simplifying, and adding some pillows/art/accessories). As you can tell from the before picture below, this room’s transformation was mostly thanks to removing all of the distracting personal stuff so potential buyers could really see the bones of the house. And you know Sherry loves adding a pitcher and a few vases full of yard clippings for fast & free greenery. Simple changes but such a difference, right?
And the good news is that the house got multiple offers within a day of being listed. And as you may have guessed, Sherry ran around the house shouting “sssssssold!” with her hands on her cheeks (much like Kevin McAlister in Home Alone).
You can hear more about Sherry’s staging adventures in Episode #41, which involved a few bigger DIY projects to prepare our friend’s house to sell.
We also popped over to the beach house last week to check on things. There’s not much to show for it, but here’s what it’s looking like these days (at least the outside is a whole lot more finished looking than the inside):
And since we didn’t get a picture of that fawn – here’s one from a couple of years ago instead. So cute. So hungry.

Here’s an example of the alarmist stories about Fixer Upper being partially “faked” that we’ve been seeing in our feeds. Please note that the detail that the whistleblower was a model was so important that it made it into the headline.
We had trouble being shocked, especially since revelations like this about House Hunters go waaaay back to 2012
Even back then Julia, the blogger behind that post, was stunned by everyone’s surprise – and how the news went viral (so much so that HGTV responded in this follow-up post)
Last year HGTV even got in on the joke with this spoof video that takes you inside the House Hunter’s Writers Room: “Do you ‘oooh’ at a foyer? I feel like that’s more of a kitchen sound.”
And to Sherry’s point about the furniture not always staying with the Fixer Upper homeowners, Katie Bower has done a couple of posts comparing the show’s “after” photos to what the homes later look like on rental listings.
Oh, and as for Cash Cab, here’s a quick recap (apparently some people are really surprised!) but here’s a more in-depth story of it being more set-up than we’d like to believe.

*Meatball sauce not to scale (ok, neither is anything else) UPDATE: We learned after this podcast went live that Ikea released a statement saying these are 3rd party sellers, and not Ikea (despite being listed as “sold by: Ikea” on Amazon). Bummerssss. They did say they’re exploring the idea of selling on Amazon in the future though, so here’s hoping!
Since I can’t link to mulch, I’ll link to the old post about the first time we mulched this yard. Exciting!
And I can show you how the delivery guy somehow misinterpreted my instruction to dump the mulch “where you always do, in the big mulch bed where the orange flags are” this year. So instead it got dumped about 15 feet in front of the flags, right onto the grass. Awesome.

We also find out which design trends most people are ready to be done with (shiplap? succulents? decorative poufs? *gasp!*) and you’ll hear what annoying outdoor to-do list item I checked off my list for Father’s Day. And – oh, look! A deer!

What’s New
Above is an after photo of the house Sherry “lightly staged” (no big furniture changes – just paring down, rearranging, simplifying, and adding some pillows/art/accessories). As you can tell from the before picture below, this room’s transformation was mostly thanks to removing all of the distracting personal stuff so potential buyers could really see the bones of the house. And you know Sherry loves adding a pitcher and a few vases full of yard clippings for fast & free greenery. Simple changes but such a difference, right?
And the good news is that the house got multiple offers within a day of being listed. And as you may have guessed, Sherry ran around the house shouting “sssssssold!” with her hands on her cheeks (much like Kevin McAlister in Home Alone).

We also popped over to the beach house last week to check on things. There’s not much to show for it, but here’s what it’s looking like these days (at least the outside is a whole lot more finished looking than the inside):

Here’s an example of the alarmist stories about Fixer Upper being partially “faked” that we’ve been seeing in our feeds. Please note that the detail that the whistleblower was a model was so important that it made it into the headline.
We had trouble being shocked, especially since revelations like this about House Hunters go waaaay back to 2012
Even back then Julia, the blogger behind that post, was stunned by everyone’s surprise – and how the news went viral (so much so that HGTV responded in this follow-up post)
Last year HGTV even got in on the joke with this spoof video that takes you inside the House Hunter’s Writers Room: “Do you ‘oooh’ at a foyer? I feel like that’s more of a kitchen sound.”
And to Sherry’s point about the furniture not always staying with the Fixer Upper homeowners, Katie Bower has done a couple of posts comparing the show’s “after” photos to what the homes later look like on rental listings.

Hello hello!
I take art commissions!
While this blog is anything goes, just know I'm always rotating the royal guards around in my mind, at all times. I'll also talk about actual bugs as well, I'm aiming to go into conservation as an entomologist, all bugs are simply tagged as "bugs", and all my own bugs I am keeping are tagged as such, plus the additional tag "bugposting".
I'll also talk about vocaloid, the binding of isaac, space, pokemon, and whatever else strikes me, all tagged accordingly.

This was in my inbox for a lot longer than I wanted it to be, but the short answer is yes! I have seen it - over a year ago, so I revisited it specifically for this ask. I'll go into a few specifics, but overall, it really did hit a LOT of the points I was addressing! I was so glad to hear him address the duality he's got, selfish/selfless, loyal/disloyal, because that's one of the most interesting parts of his character to me! It really is amazing to see the inner workings of everything he thinks and does when a lot of people tend to gloss over those in favor of just calling him annoying.
I was also a little surprised to also hear him call pouf "loud", which on my end, wasn't really the clearest wording, so don't feel bad about not understanding what I meant (+ thank you for asking for clarification!). The context I used it under is in reference to how much attention his character grabs, between design, the emotionality, the violin, the literal screaming, he's very hard to ignore! Even with all the dislike, you have to at least admit that it's difficult to just push him aside when he keeps moving himself into a spotlight.
Before really delving into a couple things, I at least wanna present the top comment on the video because it made me laugh:

I wanna talk about his sense of empathy + his emotions, which is something I've actually talked about before in a post that actually is where I drew my url from, which went from "he's neurodivergent bc I am and I say so" to "oh wait, there's actually substance to this". It's a post I plan to rewrite with general neurodivergence in mind as opposed to just adhd, but I digress!
Empathy is a huge theme in the caa and it's something that gets a spotlight with all the guards + meruem. Pitou's learning of empathy is fairly explicit; youpi's is a bit more subtle but he also learns that he should care about other people; meruem also achieves this via komugi.
Pouf is once more a special case and the way I see it, he either has very low empathy, or none at all. The spiritual message ability literally lets him read emotions in a textbook fashion, down to neat exact ratios, and that's used in both an offensive and defensive manner, which is to predict an opponent's next move. When he's not actively using that, he has a very difficult time understanding the emotions of others and can't really connect with them. He can't understand what meruem sees in komugi, he can't understand why pitou heals her, he even directly says to them something to the degree of "I don't understand". Personally speaking as a person with (often) low empathy, that's not a character flaw - he could've taken time to learn about the actual feelings etc that everyone around him has, but he didn't.
This is actually something that's also made explicit, and I saw that in a line that a lot of people laughed off. I don't remember the context around it, but it was the "soldiers don't need memories or emotions" line. Memories of course being a nod to how pouf himself streamlined the soldier making process that involved wiping away memories, but the bit about emotions is what pulls me in. Yes it's ironic to hear that from the most emotionally volatile man in the arc, but it's very revealing in regards to how pouf thinks.
We know he likely views himself both as the most loyal guard (his actions being the most "logical" vs the other two guards continuing to develop), as well as the most unworthy guard (which is just his own self loathing, also seen multiple times over the arc). But that line? That's not only a giveaway that he sees himself as meruem's perfect soldier, but also that pouf has a difficult time processing his own emotions. It's clear even to pitou and youpi that pouf is volatile to say the least, but in that line, we can see that pouf likely doesn't see himself that way. The implication I'm reading into is that he doesn't consider his emotions to be anything out of the ordinary, and that his (re)actions involving those emotions are in proportion.
I also wanna get into the duality of his mind a bit more! The note on how he's actually quite clever and book smart whilst simultaneously unable to conceive of things outside his ultimate view of what his purpose is is something that I also find fascinating. This was actually another point I bring up that makes me believe he's neurodivergent - he's very academically gifted and able to think quickly, but really lags in social situations. His conversations center around meruem and he doesn't really engage with anyone else unless he has no choice, on top of not really being able to perceive emotions in any kind of empathetic manner. There's definitely more to be said on both neurodivergence and the general duality of thinking, but I'll leave the big ideas right here for the time being.
I wanna make a small comment on his character that's a bit fueled by the thoughts of someone else I talked to, with her focus on him being his utilitarian streak - if it wasn't for meruem's benefit, if it didn't have meaning overall, it should be eliminated. This is mostly seen in his fixation over komugi, but it's also present in that "soldiers don't need memories or emotions" line as well; it's one of his biggest driving attitudes as seen in all his "for the king" repetition, as well as in his being willing to die if he can't serve well enough.
This on its own presents an interesting clash with pouf's overall aesthetics; the man is an art piece. If things should be cut out, what use does he have for his violin? Why bother with the eloquence, the books, the mental leaps and jumps? The very method of his existence is a contradiction to his own ideals, and I do enjoy it very very much. (I actually did wanna write a character essay on his contradictions and duality as well, and now I think I may have enough to write about!)

thank you for answering my ask about pouf. i need to find more fans like you who take pouf seriously. i honestly believe homophobia is the main reason he’s so hated and not taken seriously enough in the fandom. (like yes he plotted against sweet baby komugi but like, his actions were very understandable-maybe even the most logical of all the royal guards?)
Thank you for your patience in how long it takes for me to gather my thoughts on these asks! I love love love pouf and honesty found a lot of the ways he thinks and struggles to be intensely relatable, so I feel especially sad when people dismiss him/the things he's done because there's just so much going on with him; he can't really be broken down into singular characteristics, none of the guards can, but with pouf there's a tendency for people to either full on despise or forget about him, or reduce him down to annoying, when there's just as much complexity to him as there is for the other guards. Granted, there doesn't seem to be as much hatred for him as there was a few years ago, but it's still definitely there.
Towards the beginning of his arc, I feel like he could definitely be considered more of a comic relief type character, just ridiculously overblown and over the top, but then there's that slow progression until the famous 2 minute improv ballet breakdown scene where he actually becomes more of a threat and is definitively an antagonist. I honestly can't think of any other characters who have that kind of progession, so I'd say that (amongst many other things) it definitely makes him unique in that respect. There's a whole lot to be said about his actions and I feel like I covered it pretty well in the other ask I wrote for (but by all means if you wanna ask more then feel free, I'm having the time of my life doing this!), so I'm gonna head straight for the heart of this 👀
I'm not saying the homophobia angle is fun to unpack, I'm just saying that there's a lot here. What's really interesting is that it's actually entirely possible to read him without applying any kind of sexuality at all; I think it's completely possible to just see this as twisted devotion and nothing more, but I personally support the gay reading in addition to that. And that's also where things get interesting because I'll see some of the jabs people take at pouf in the tags and while I don't feel I'm seeing anything overt, there IS a considerable number of jokes that are just swings at his sexuality. I'm not immune to the occasional "haha gay" joke, but seeing it enough from lots of different users + the general disdain towards him really does drive everything in at a bad angle.
This also works with the other big thing i see in the tags, which is also the prime criticism I see of pouf, and that's that people found him annoying. It's a fair criticism, and when I showed this arc to two of my friends they felt the same, I could hear some very deep sighs every time the violin solo kicked in again because they were so sick of seeing him. Calling him annoying on its own is a valid criticism, but seeing it so often while it also tends to be juxtaposed with people poking at him for being gay really does start to paint an unfortunate picture.
He's definitely one of the more flamboyant and, for lack of a better way to say it, "loud" characters too, and this is where I'm seeing the most interesting intersections. It's pretty widely agreed that people read killua as gay, but the worst extent I've seen (and I speak as someone who doesn't really venture into the tags too often) is people insisting that he can't be gay because of either his age or that he's just a very good friend, neither of which really stack against some of the outright mockery I've seen against pouf.
This gets even more down to the wire when you look at an antagonistic character like hisoka, who is also pretty consistently read as gay (or maybe it actually is canon? I've seen some debate over it) and has arguably committed worse acts than pouf ever did, yet hisoka is a fan favorite in a lot of circles; both of them are also pretty bold in design as well, making them really stand out against the rest of the cast. There's a weird unique intersection of things going on with pouf specifically.
I do remember seeing someone who didn't like his character because he seemed like every homophobic/gay stereotype rolled into one man, and I think that might nail it. From that to the jokes about him being the ultimate theater kid, he's flamboyant in a way that can come off as obnoxious, and combining that with the way he targeted komugi and was kind of very clearly in the wrong sets him up as a target. I saw someone else say that, because of the way he kept going after meruem, pouf gets very dangerously close to the stereotype of gay men being predatory, but I personally feel like that may be a bit of a stretch.
From a sexuality lens, there's just a lot of things going on; I didn't mean for this to get as long as it is, but I definitely know what you mean anon U_U pouf is very easy to make fun of and bully because he stands out so much, and I've done my fair share of bullying too, but a lot of the bullying does come from a certain angle, which is suspect to say the least U_U

okay but i’m watching h x h ep 112 right now and after grandpa zeno’s dragon dive attack on the palace we literally see pouf punching the dragon dive arrows, one after another, super fast out of his way as he flies back to the palace. i’m just, i know this is superficial but his talent is so underrated.
hater’s like to call pouf weak but the "Hunter × Hunter Manual" (found in the Yu ☆ Yu ☆ Hakusho official character book, Shueisha Jump remix), ranks pouf’s power levels as 5/5 for skill, body, nen, ingenuity, intelligence and 3/5 for mind throughout his lifetime (28/30). to compare pitou is ranked 4/5 on mind and intelligence and 5/5 for the rest (28/30) and youpi is by far the weakest royal guard: his rankings in the different categories keep fluctuating throughout his life but his total score is usually around 25 or 26 out of 30. so canonically pouf is just as strong as youpi and the smartest ant and his weakness is that for some reason his mind never reaches its full potential 🤷🏽‍♀️
The man is built like a twig but everyone forgets him punching boulders out of the air as the palace disintegrates under the dragon dive arrows; he's rail thin and looks like he has no center of gravity but also almost snaps morel's spine after stealing his pipe
He's also pretty durable, and I'm looking not only at kicking boulders out of the air but also at how meruem smacked him across the face hard enough to throw him across the room. Nothing broken, no concussions, just got back up and only had a small bruise to show for it.
He's also pretty physically quick too, and iirc swallowtail butterflies, like what his wings are based on, are supposed to be some of the most efficient fliers bc of the huge surface area of their wings (iirc, that is, I do remember reading that but can't find specific sources so don't quote me on that 😳)
I think a lot of calling him weak comes from the fact that he's not a physical fighter! His entire character is just mind games and manipulation and it makes it look like he's not doing a lot when he's compared to youpi and pitou, who are both physically offensive fighters, plus there's the whole bit where he's in the cocoon and he and morel are having a stare down while everyone else is fighting for their lives lmao. The name of that game was redirection and he played it so well that most people who payed any attention to him at all decided he wasn't all that strong anyways 😔
One final note on him and fighting and maiming and all that - he did, in fact, kill people. Yeah we watch him get half his face burned off by 12 year old killua and also completely fail to even touch a very disoriented blind girl, both of which look really pathetic, but he also put practically the entire capital city under hypnosis, and they all died when he did, so iirc pouf, while not a very direct fighter, is still responsible for the deaths of roughly 50,000 people, which is absolutely wild all things considered, especially considering how this usually isn't remembered 🤔
Anyways if pouf saw the phrasing of "is perfect in every way but just can't reach his full potential" I think he'd just implode on the spot

Above is an after photo of the house Sherry “lightly staged” (no big furniture changes – just paring down, rearranging, simplifying, and adding some pillows/art/accessories). As you can tell from the before picture below, this room’s transformation was mostly thanks to removing all of the distracting personal stuff so potential buyers could really see the bones of the house. And you know Sherry loves adding a pitcher and a few vases full of yard clippings for fast & free greenery. Simple changes but such a difference, right?
And the good news is that the house got multiple offers within a day of being listed. And as you may have guessed, Sherry ran around the house shouting “sssssssold!” with her hands on her cheeks (much like Kevin McAlister in Home Alone).

We also popped over to the beach house last week to check on things. There’s not much to show for it, but here’s what it’s looking like these days (at least the outside is a whole lot more finished looking than the inside):

Can We Just Talk About…
Here’s an example of the alarmist stories about Fixer Upper being partially “faked” that we’ve been seeing in our feeds. Please note that the detail that the whistleblower was a model was so important that it made it into the headline.
We had trouble being shocked, especially since revelations like this about House Hunters go waaaay back to 2012
Even back then Julia, the blogger behind that post, was stunned by everyone’s surprise – and how the news went viral (so much so that HGTV responded in this follow-up post)
Last year HGTV even got in on the joke with this spoof video that takes you inside the House Hunter’s Writers Room: “Do you ‘oooh’ at a foyer? I feel like that’s more of a kitchen sound.”
And to Sherry’s point about the furniture not always staying with the Fixer Upper homeowners, Katie Bower has done a couple of posts comparing the show’s “after” photos to what the homes later look like on rental listings.
Oh, and as for Cash Cab, here’s a quick recap (apparently some people are really surprised!) but here’s a more in-depth story of it being more set-up than we’d like to believe.

Since I can’t link to mulch, I’ll link to the old post about the first time we mulched this yard. Exciting!
And I can show you how the delivery guy somehow misinterpreted my instruction to dump the mulch “where you always do, in the big mulch bed where the orange flags are” this year. So instead it got dumped about 15 feet in front of the flags, right onto the grass. Awesome.
