A Few Things To Remember and Follow When Engaging Top Painters and Decorators
Hiring professional painters and decorators can make a significant difference when it comes to transforming the look and feel of your home or office. Whether you're looking to freshen up the walls with a new coat of paint or completely revamp the interior design, finding the right painters and decorators in South London is crucial. With numerous options available, it can be overwhelming to make the best choice.
However, by considering a few key factors, you can ensure that you hire the best professionals for the job. Here are some important considerations to remember when searching for painters and decorators in South London.
Portfolio and References: Before making a final decision, ask the painters and decorators for their portfolio of preceding projects they have completed successfully. This examination will give you an idea of their style, resourcefulness, and courtesy to detail. Furthermore, don't hesitate to ask for references from past clients. Contacting these references can provide valuable insights into the professionalism, reliability, and overall satisfaction with the services provided by the painters and decorators.
Communication and Competence: Effective communication is essential when working with painters and decorators. Look for professionals who are responsive, concentrating on your requirements, and willing to provide proposals and leadership based on their proficiency. Good painters and decorators will listen to your ideas, offer recommendations, and keep you informed throughout the project. Their professionalism and attention to detail will contribute to a smooth and successful collaboration.
Tumblr media
Knowledge and Skillsets: One of the first things to consider when hiring painters and decorators is their experience and expertise. Look for professionals who have been in the industry for several years and have a proven track record of delivering high-quality work. Experienced painters and decorators deeply understand different techniques, materials, and finishes, allowing them to provide exceptional results.
Insurance and Licenses: When hiring painters and decorators, always check if they have proper insurance coverage and the necessary licenses to operate in South London. This ensures that you are protected in case of any accidents or damages that may occur during the painting and decorating process. Licensed professionals are more likely to adhere to safety regulations and follow industry standards, giving you peace of mind throughout the project.
Cost Estimates and Contracts: Obtain detailed cost estimates from multiple painters and decorators in West London. While it can be tempting to go for the lowest bid, keep in mind that quality workmanship is worth the investment. A reputable professional will provide a comprehensive breakdown of costs, including labour, materials, and any additional charges. Moreover, ensure that all the terms and conditions are outlined in a written contract before work begins. This contract should specify the timeline, payment schedule, and any warranties or guarantees the painters and decorators provide.
Services Offered: Clarify the specific services offered by the painters and decorators. Do they specialize in residential or commercial projects? Can they handle both interior and exterior painting? Do they offer additional services like wallpaper installation, plastering, or carpentry? It's essential to ensure that the professionals you hire can cater to your specific needs and requirements.
Reviews and Reputation: Take the time to read online reviews and testimonials about the painters and decorators you are considering. Websites like Trustpilot, Google Reviews, and social media platforms can provide valuable insights into the experiences of past clients. Pay attention to the overall reputation of the professionals, including their punctuality, communication skills, and the ability to meet deadlines.
By considering these key factors when hiring painters and decorators in South London, you can ensure that your project is in capable hands. Remember to prioritize experience, review their portfolio and references, confirm their services and licenses, obtain detailed cost estimates, and assess their reputation and communication skills. With the right professionals, your home or office can be transformed into a beautiful space that reflects your style and personality.

Damp London Proofing - Why Is It Required?
Whether the property is residential or commercial, dampness is one of the most common internal building issues we have to deal with. When it comes to rising moisture, prevention is always preferable to cure, which is why damp proofing is so important.
The walls and floors won't be well-protected if Damp London proofing is put in improperly. Ultimately, this will result in mould, musty odours, stains, wet rot, peeling wallpaper, and damp patches on the walls, which we would certainly prefer to avoid.
When you first see evidence of moisture in your home, it's crucial to install or service your damp-proof course right away since, especially in a country as wet as ours, it will only get worse if you don't. Let’s look at some reasons we should consider damp proofing.
Why is damp proofing required?
Dampness or dry rot are significant issues in London. Thus, Damp London proofing is required -
●       To strengthen the structure
The building's structure starts to deteriorate when moisture starts to get inside. It leads to a weak and brittle structure that can collapse anytime and cause devastation of unfathomable proportions. This is why a damp-proofing property is necessary and should not be disregarded. Nobody wants to see their dream home ruined by moisture, which is easily controllable as long as the necessary steps are followed promptly before the problem becomes out of hand.
●       Aesthetics
In your home, rising moisture can lead to various unsightly problems, including crumbling skirting boards and skirting that may peel, split, or blister. Your property will stay aesthetically beautiful if the source of the moisture is eliminated with an efficient damp-proof course and treatment.
●       Prevents moulds
When dampness affects a residential or commercial building, it promotes the formation of mould and mildew, which accelerates quickly. Along with impacting the property, it poses a serious risk to the residents' physical safety. Mould and mildew are harmful by nature, which can have disastrous effects on those who have respiratory conditions like asthma.
Therefore, damp proofing aids in establishing a barrier that protects the building's walls from moisture and prevents the development of dangerous infections.
In a nutshell
Moisture and dampness are ongoing issues. As a result, the walls become less sturdy, which causes cracks that let more moisture into the building. Therefore, damp proofing should be started as soon as it is discovered that there are wall cracks.
Hire Anglian Preservation, an independent damp-proofing and timber treatment professional with more than 25 years of industry experience, as that will enable you to inspect for cracks and fix them before you start damp proofing.

Established in 2021, The Mad Hatters are a London based duo who enjoy the celebration of colourful and playful designs that focus on community and construction processes. As part of this, the competition offers the unique opportunity to celebrate ties with the local community and the heritage of the area, encouraging both locals and visitors to pause and rediscover these vibrant areas of the City from a different perspective.
This year, the competition was judged by an expert panel comprising Yigong Zhang (Urban Designer, Perkins & Will and co-chair, Aldgate BID Public Realm Steering Group), Charlotte Fletcher (chair, Cheapside Business Alliance board and senior director, CBRE), Laura King (director, KPF), Ellie Stathaki (architecture editor, Wallpaper*) and Rosa Rogina, (programme director, London Festival of Architecture & New London Architecture)
All winning teams will now be awarded £800 to develop, manufacture and install their bench, ready to be enjoyed by the public during the London Festival of Architecture 2021.
Rosa Rogina, programme director of New London Architecture and the London Festival of Architecture, said:
“Every year, the City Benches is always a popular part of the LFA programme – both in person and on social media. With the ongoing support of Cheapside Business Alliance and our new partners at Aldgate Connect BID, we are thrilled to be able to continue championing the work of emerging architects by expanding the project and delivering nine unique new benches this summer. During the judging process, it’s been great to see how each of the winning teams has tapped into our 2021 theme of ‘care’ in a different way – exploring care for the community, our capital’s architecture, and the environment. We can’t wait to see how these imaginative benches will enhance people’s experience of the wider City’s public realm, and safely welcoming everyone back to the capital.”

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to enjoy these vibrant design installations in Aldgate’s streets this June.
Community inclusiveness is central to Aldgate Connect and we are proud to implement this programme as it really embodies themes of equality, diversity and inclusion of the whole of society.”
Claire Dumontier-Marriage BID Manager of Cheapside Business Alliance said:
“We are proud to be part of the London Festival of Architecture once again, supporting this fantastic competition and the work of emerging architects and designers for a fourth year. The 2021 winning cohort has impressed us with their innovative approach to sustainability and careful consideration of inclusivity and accessibility. It’ll be brilliant to see how these imaginative bench designs transform our streets throughout the summer, creating space for everyone to make the most of Cheapside’s public realm and distinctive architecture.”
Chair of the Planning and Transportation Committee at the City of London Corporation, Alastair Moss, says:

Amy & Sarah from Polished Kitchen Design
We are delighted to introduce Amy & Sarah from POLISHED KITCHEN DESIGN …
Tumblr media
Sarah & Amy from POLISHED KITCHEN DESIGN
We (Nici Jordan – Move Revolution’s Marketing Director & Mathew Gurr – Area Sales Manager for Haywards Heath Lindfield & Burgess Hill) thoroughly enjoyed meeting Amy & Sarah for a coffee (and natter) at our favourite Lindfield Coffee Works. We wanted to share with you who they are, all things ‘POLISHED KITCHEN DESIGN’ and so much more! Both Amy & Sarah have really interesting backgrounds – when you have a read you will understand their immense creativity, eye for detail – and why they care so much about delivering outstanding work for their clients!

Nici, Sarah, Amy & Mathew loving Lindfield Coffee Works
Tumblr media
Tell us all about how (and why) you have started POLISHED KITCHEN DESIGN…
Amy: I was a PR Director for a large cosmetics company in London for 15 years but had lost my zest for it. After doing renovations on our last 2 properties I wanted to follow my passion and try a career in interior design, so I took the plunge and left my job in the city. After completing an Interior Design course I was lucky enough to be offered a kitchen designer role in a local independent design studio who had actually designed and supplied my own kitchen 3 years previously which is when Sarah and I first met. I jumped at the chance as I loved the process of designing my own kitchen alongside Sarah. I think it was fate that we ended up working together!
Tumblr media
Sarah: I started off my career working for a medical company but quickly felt it was the right career path for me. I’d always had a passion for Interior Design so signed myself up for an Interior Design course at KLC Design college in Chelsea. Whilst I was studying I took on various work experience role with local designers which led me to a local kitchen design company. Soon after working in kitchen design I knew it was the right fit for me I’ve never looked back. Having worked in the industry for 9 years I still have as much passion and enjoyment from my job as I did when I started. Having worked with Amy over the years, we found we really complimented each others working style and it very naturally became apparent we would make great business partners. After many glasses of wine, cups of tea and far too many biscuits we came up with the idea of launching our own business venture – Polished Kitchen Designs. We have been blown away by the support and enthusiasm we have received so far and are excited to see what’s in store beyond our first year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Given you both love of all things ‘creative’ who or what is your main design inspiration?
Amy: In my previous career we worked with a lot of fashion designers such as YSL, Stella MCartney, Marc Jacobs and Chloe so it’s always been something I have been interested in. I love how trends span across fashion and interiors and playing with using things like accessories and colour to update a look. I’m a big believer in a classic style that never dates but incorporating more trend led ideas that can bring things bang up to date but that are also easily changed when you fancy a change. I’ve always loved Cole & Son wallpapers and have used them in most of my personal projects over the years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sarah: We are both fans of Farrow & Ball, they always have such a tempting palette of paint colours to choose from and they are Eco friendly too. Personal favourites are Setting Plaster which is part of the new nude trend, Off Black which my kitchen is painted in and they can’t be beaten for their gorgeous palette of greys…over the years we have used Blackened, Purbeck Stone, Elephants Breath and Downpipe…the list goes on!
For affordable, stylish furniture and accessories Made.com really is a go to for me – I always find items I love and their clean and simple designs mean they compliment any style. They also have some great lighting options and many of our clients have sourced their island lighting from here. For me it’s an added bonus that they support independent designers all around the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The explosion of social media also means there are some amazing influencers out there who have some great style inspiration spanning across fashion and interiors.
Here are a few we love on Instagram :

In your opinion what is the key design trend of 2019?
Amy: Industrial, edgy style kitchens with lots of different textures– thing sleek and contemporary with a mix of metallics, wood, dark hues and a contrasting colour to make it all pop. Don’t get too caught up in matching your metallics as mixing these can be effective and create more interest visually rather than getting too matchy matchy!
We love this Second Nature 1909 kitchen which is a stunning example of making a traditional in-frame shaker kitchen more industrial and on trend with the addition of industrial black handles and on trend colours.
Sarah: Statement colours are not going anywhere. Don’t be afraid to be bold – dark greens, blues and even black add drama and style to a kitchen, don’t forget you can soften these colours with a touch of warmer hues such as cashmere and blush nudes. The addition of a light worktop will help to bounce the light around your space and always remember flooring plays an important part of your colour palette. A good tip is to get samples and create your own moodboard which will bring your entire concept together.

Tell us about POLISHED KITCHEN DESIGN .. what makes you different!
If you go to our website you will see out mission statement on our homepage which is:
Our passion and motivation is to design and install your dream kitchen, providing all the experience and inspiration you would get from an independent kitchen design studio – without the showroom price tag.
Our main aim when we started Polished Kitchen Designs was to make the independent kitchen design experience accessible to a wider customer base. We found that many people didn’t want to buy a kitchen from one of the ‘big sheds’ and felt underwhelmed by the product and service on offer. We also had many comments that they either felt intimidated by the smaller independent studios or that they thought they wouldn’t have anything to suit smaller budgets. By not having our own studio we can offer the same quality product and service but without the showroom price tag. We’ve priced jobs recently which have come very close to Howdens prices, we are confident our product and personalised service is far superior so clients are getting a lot more for their money. We like nothing more than popping back to see our clients and their beautiful completed projects for a cup of tea (we’ll bring the cake!) and natter. The process can take on average 4- 6 months (sometimes even longer if builders are involved!) from start to finish and in that time we build really good relationships with our clients so we have mixed emotions when our projects finish and it’s time to say goodbye.

If you are looking for a new kitchen we are in no doubt this will definitely have tempted you to give Amy and Sarah a call! Just go to their website  www.polishedkitchendesigns.co.uk  or send them an email [email protected]

The Timeless Designs of Robin and Lucienne Day - Part Two
Read Part One of “The Timeless Designs of Robin and Lucienne Day”
Robin and Lucienne’s Pivotal Work in the 1950s
In 1952 the Days moved to 49 Cheyne Walk in Chelsea and decorated their home in the new style that they champion. (1) During the 1950s Robin continued to develop exhibits for Central Office of Information (1) and designed furniture for Hille, including the Hillestak plywood chair (1951), 675 Chair (1952) and the Interplan Unit U modular storage system (1955). (2)

Lucienne also experienced tremendous success in the wake of the Festival of Britain. While she became Heal’s top designer, she also designed fabrics for “for Liberty, John Lewis and Edinburgh Weavers. (3)” These patterns from the 1950s featured linear motifs, some inspired by organic plant forms, others were abstract. Her designs from later in the decade were sketchier with bold colored blocks and stripes. (3) While the 1950s were a period of great professional activity for Lucienne, in 1954 her life changed when she gave birth to a baby daughter, Lucienne and Robin’s only child. (4)

The Days’ Become Britain’s Leading Designers
During the 1960s Robin continued with ground-breaking furniture design for Hille; his design for the “Polypropylene chair for Hille, which becomes one of the best-selling chairs of all time. (1)” During the 1960s Robin and Lucienne did collaborate on several projects: “furnishings for Churchill College, Cambridge” 1and that same year became design consultants for “John Lewis stores and Waitrose supermarkets. (1)”
British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) also hired the couple as design consultants; together Robin and Lucienne “designed interiors for a range of aircraft. (5)” The next year Robin got the opportunity to work again with Peter Moro to design Hille’s showroom in London. (6) In additional to furniture Robin design electronics for Pye employing his “aesthetic on a smaller scale. (7)” Lucienne’s work in the 1960s became less representative, more geometric and abstract, as can be seen in her Octogon carpet for Wilton Royal (1964) and Apex fabric for Heal (1967). (8)

Robin and Lucienne’s New Directions
Robin’s most recognized work of the 1970s was his E Series classroom furniture for Hille. With a molded plastic seat and metal legs E Series chairs were originally available in 5 colors: “blue, flame, forest green, donkey and brown. (9)” The chairs are still sold by Hille today but now are marketed in sixteen colors, including sapphire and charcoal. (10)

Lucienne’s designs in the 1970s continued to feature bold colors and strong geometrics but stylized plant motifs made their way back into her work. With changing fashions and many of her old contacts retiring Lucienne decided to stop designing fabrics and concentrated her efforts on serving as a design consultant to John Lewis. (9)
In the 1980s Lucienne channeled her love of textile design into developing silk mosaic tapestries, made “from small squares or strips of dyed silk. (11)” She would go on to create 144 of these silk mosaics. (1) In 1990 she would produce a stunning series of large-scale silk mosaics called “Aspects of the Sun” which were hung in the café of the John Lewis store at Kingston-on-Thames. (12) During this decade Robin turned his attention mainly to designing public seating, most notably for the Barbican Arts Centre and for British Rail. (13)

Robin Day continued to maintain his interest in public seating, designing as well consulting on several, such as his Toro seating designed for the London Underground (1990) and the modular polypropylene Sussex Bench (2003). (14)
Final Tributes to the Days
Robin and Lucienne Day’s work was introduced to a new generation of designers first in 1991 “their work was prominently showcased in a landmark exhibition called ‘The New Look: Design in the Fifties’ at Manchester City Art Gallery.” Then in 1993, the Whitworth Art Gallery held a one-woman show of Lucienne’s designs. (15) “A joint retrospective, "Robin and Lucienne Day – Pioneers of Contemporary Design" [was] held at the Barbican Art Gallery in 2001, which juxtaposed her textiles, carpets, wallpapers, ceramics and table linen with Robin's furniture. (16)”
The Days and their work were the subjects of the documentary film “Contemporary Days: The Designs of Lucienne and Robin Day.” One of Robin’s last public appearances was attending the film’s opening. (17)

The Design Legacy of Robin and Lucienne Day
Robin and Lucienne Day proved that excellence and innovation in design are timeless. Lucienne Day’s obituary in The Independent reported that when her “pylon-inspired pattern called Graphica was put back into production by Habitat in 1999 … it still looked so strikingly modern that it was hard to believe it was 46 years old. (15)” Robin’s “public seating was used for decades after its original installation”1 many of his designs for Hille, especially his designs for school furniture are still marketed and widely in use today. (1)
Lucienne Day died on January 30, 2010. Robin died on November 9 that same year. (1) In 2012 their daughter Paula Day established the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation. The Foundation is a charitable organization that celebrates the Day’s design legacy through exhibitions, conferences and design projects. The Foundation recognizes innovation in design through a series of awards to textile and product design students. (17)
