Gibson City, Illinois This is a triple crossing in the center of Gibson City, Illinois. While two of the three roads at this point are of the Norfolk & Western, formerly it was the Wabash, the Nickel Plate, and the Illinois Central all meeting at this spot. We’re looking up the Illinois Central (between Clinton and Gilman) while the east/west Nickel Plate is on this side of the tower. The train is northbound on the former Wabash line, between Bement and Chicago, on the other side of the tower. Note that all of the locomotives have high short hoods, a signature feature for the Norfolk & Western during this time period (along with the Southern Railway).

Today’s #WorkerWednesday post features a ca. 1890 group photograph of a railroad construction crew for the Wilmington and Northern Railroad Company, seen here at work near New Bridge Station.
The Wilmington and Northern Railroad was a branch of the Reading Railroad system, and it ran between Wilmington, Delaware, and Reading, Pennsylvania. The workers who built the railroad made it possible for the various industrial plants located along Brandywine Creek to connect with other railroads leading to the west and to the anthracite coal regions of western Pennsylvania.
This photograph is part of the Hagley Library’s Pierre A. Gentieu Brandywine River Valley photographs (Accession 1970.001). Pierre A. Gentieu (1842-1930) was a long-time employee of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, and his photographs document the DuPont Company Powder Yards as well as the surrounding community. The Plug Between Runs
Here we see GM&O’s Chicago commuter train which was known as “the Plug.” It's being serviced on a very cold day at Glenn Yard located south of Chicago. The commuter train ran between Chicago Union Station and Joliet on the GM&O, former Alton; Metra now calls this line the Heritage Corridor. I've posted shots from this servicing here before, but not this particular image.

Triple Crossing
These images come from an intriguing spot if one is a rail enthusiast: the triple crossing at Tuscola, Illinois.
This is where the Illinois Central double track ran in a north-south direction; the B&O crossed moving east-west, and the C&EI (later MoPac) cut across at an angle to the previous two lines.
The first image shows an overview of the track layout as seen from the highway overpass nearby—the old track arrangement is still in play here, but preparations are being made for the simplified alignment soon to come. This will merge the B&O and C&EI prior to crossing IC, thus having fewer diamonds to maintain.
The latter two images show a southbound train of the IC: I shot the first still from the highway overpass while the second image was taken from track level, standing on the B&O. These were taken in the so-called death-star era, of which I have very few images.
Three images by Richard Koenig; taken January 1991.

Bozeman, Montana
I was shocked today to see an image of the Bozeman passenger station falling into disrepair. I have two images of the station in better times—when Amtrak's North Coast Hiawatha still ran.
In my shots here we first see an eastbound Burlington Norther freight on the former Northern Pacific line, and then the Amtrak passenger trains arrives. I would ride the NCH between Bozeman and Milwaukee.
[Being a locomotive geek, I see that the BN GP9 on point is a former Northern Pacific engine, running on home rails, built in 1957. The power for the passenger train is a relatively new F40PH built in October of 1977, just shy of two years old.] It should be said that this Amtrak train was named in honor of earlier passenger trains on both the Milwaukee Road and the Northern Pacific—as its long journey would use the tracks of those two railroads. The train operated for Amtrak between 1971 and 1979. Again, sorry to see the station falling into disrepair. I hope it is saved and that passenger trains return to the line. Two images by Richard Koenig—made in August of 1979.

Quad Cities Rocket
Another one of my earliest railroad images...
This is an eastbound Rock Island Quad Cities Rocket with E8 655 on the point. It was built for the railroad in March of 1952.
The location, of course, is the well known crossing with the ATSF and GM&O at Joliet, Illinois.

Orders on the Hoop
A westbound Conrail freight train is approaching Effingham, Illinois. The train is due to receive orders by way of paper “flimsies,” two of which can be seen in the order hoop.
This line was formerly Penn Central and Pennsylvania Railroad prior to that, as the distinctive signal indicates. The locomotive on point is a unique variation of the SDP45 built for the Erie Lackawanna, which was folded into Conrail on April 1st 1976.

Seventy-Eight Years Old
In this image, several EMD F3s, tied onto various other units of a more contemporary ilk, work the Bunge plant along the GM&O main line. This spot lies between Pontiac and Cayuga, in central Illinois.
[Note: this elevator seems to go by Prairie Central Coop nowadays.]
The lead locomotive seen here was built in December of 1946, thirty-one years old when this shot was taken; it would be active on the Illinois Central Gulf only for another six months. One may have thought that would constitute a good long productive life, but there would be much more.
The engine would be rebuilt to move passengers for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in the early 1980s. After that stint, this locomotive went on to haul freight again for the Idaho Northern & Pacific. It may be still kicking, now pulling tourists about, just over seventy-eight years later, but I am uncertain.
