"The police… a-arrested me out of the back of your car, Master. They took… me to a house and wanted me to tell them about you and about what you do and who you work with… I di-didn't talk to them—" His voice speeds up. "I did-didn't talk to them— didn't even say one word to them— I swear—"
"Oh, puppy. I'd love to believe that… I'll have to see what my sources say."
Of course, given that Curt isn't a cop and Ross was off-duty today, she knows exactly what her sources are going to say. Have said, already. But she can't tell him that, of course, and anyway, she thinks the terror while he waits will look good on him. Not too long, though. She'll probably 'hear' about the result in the early afternoon or evening tomorrow.
"And they let you go? Even though you didn't say a word?" She allows skepticism to enter her voice, but her hand is still gentle on his face. She picks a fresh leaf out of his hair with her other hand.
"Oh, puppy. I'd love to believe that… I'll have to see what my sources say."
A little frightened whine escaped the pet's throat at that...
"And they let you go? Even though you didn't say a word?"
The pet gives a little shake of his head. "N-no, Master. I... escaped out a window and ran. They... One of them pushed me into a table and it... it cut my shoulder. When they took my shirt off to bandage it, they... they saw the tattoo you gave me. Then... they stopped questioning me. They... put me in a room... And I jumped out the window."

Bleeding and hurt, I stumbled out the back door of J's small house. My leg was splinted— still far from healed after whatthey did to me— but it was now or never. My one shot.
They were asleep on the couch. They had never truly let me out of their sight. This was the only opportunity I would get. If I failed... fuck... if I failed...
They would kill me. Or chain me up in the basement again, in which case I would probably be better off dead.
No. This was what I had to do. Barely able to walk. Shaking worse than I ever had in my life. Covered in my own blood. I ran. I ran a fast as I could manage with one leg splinted and both weak from disuse. I only made it a few houses down before I knew I wouldn't be able to go any further. Tears streaming down my cheeks, I clawed my way up the front steps in the quickly dimming evening light and threw myself at the door.
I banged on the door with all the strength I could manage and screamed for someone— please— anyone— to help me.
It seemed like an eternity passed by before the door opened. A man, rightfully shocked, skeptical, and wary, stood in the doorway, phone in hand. All I could do was plead for him to call 911 and pray that he didn't know J...

By the time Pet returns from the kitchen, Mal has new drink in her hand. She glances at her watch again as he folds himself over in front of her. She takes a few slow sips before placing the glass down.
She spends the next fifteen minutes continuing to speak with Rose in generalities. When she picks up her drink again, she taps her pet's chest. She mostly trusts Pet, and she mostly trusts that he won't have the chance to spill her secrets even if he was so inclined. But she has things to discuss that she wants to be sure won't get out.
"Up," she tells him. "You will wait by the front door for me. I'll deal with your failures when we get home."
The pet's muscles are tired from his previous attempt... He's beginning to struggle a bit when Mal taps his chest. "Up," she tells him. "You will wait by the front door for me. I'll deal with your failures when we get home."
"Yes, master," the pet says as he stands, eyes a little too wide, the slightest tremor in his hands as he heads towards the door.

sorry if this is maybe the wrong place to say it, but I love the story with Roman and Bryce so much!! I'm a shy lurker, but I wanted to say something, haha.
I really like both of your writing styles.
((OOC:
Aww! Thank you so much!! I think we have quite a few lurkers on this story 😂😂
I know this means a lot to @whumplr-reader too!! This story has been so fun to write so far! What's our word count now..? Has to be, like, 150,000+ I think? 😂 I think we're at 700+ posts! I'll have to look once I get back to my computer!))

((In character introduction))
Hello! My name is Roman Cates. Sometimes I go by Roman, sometimes I go by Cates. I don't have a middle name! I am 22 years old.
Between the ages of 20 and 22, I was held captive by a person who only identified themself to me as J. For the most part, J kept me locked in a secure concrete room in their basement. They... well... they rarely fed me. They liked to hurt me whenever they were feeling particularly happy...
They never did seem angry when I saw them... It makes me wonder if they only came to hurt me when they were having a good day...
Probably best not to think about that though...
I've been trying to recover for the past year. I wasn't rescued— I escaped. When the police went to arrest J, they found the house, but no sign that J had ever been there. They found some blood evidence of what happened to me though...
A-anyway, like I said, that's all in the past and I'm recovering from it now. I'm trying to learn to trust people again and trying to overcome my fears. It's a slow process, but I won't give up!

Roman shuts his eyes and nods. He pulls back unto the bed, and gives a very low "Okay…"
"I'll be right back," the doctor says, and leaves the room. Bryce looks down at Roman, who still has his eyes closed. He probably hates Bryce right now, and he definitely tried to physically push him away earlier.
Bryce takes a backwards step, willing to leave him now that he's safe, but unwilling to turn his back. The chair is just steps away, he can back up to it easily.
The doctor steps out, but Roman hears Bryce step back, too.
He said he would stay.
Roman's eyes fly open and he sits up, on the edge of the bed in all of half a second as he reaches out and grabs Bryce by the sleeve. "N-no—"

"N-no— please no— Bryce— wai-wait— please don't lea-eave me in here—" Roman begins to push himself off the bed. Again.
Bryce takes a quick two steps forward, blocking Roman's ability to exit with his body. He looks back at the doctor with a quick "Sorry," before he turns his attention back to Roman. He can't see the doctor's face, but Roman is calming down (from where he was seconds ago, anyway) and he's not trying to get off the bed, so he'll take the win.
"I understand you're scared, and acting irrationally. We can sedate you now." The doctor tells Roman, apparently having accepted that Bryce won't be leaving.
Bryce comes back and blocks Roman from getting up. That's fine. He just wants Bryce to stay.
"I understand you're scared," the surgeon says, "and acting irrationally. We can sedate you now."
Sedate..? Roman's eyes widen and he looks at the doctor and he's shaking and feels sick and sweaty...
But... as much as he hates being drugged... Bryce isn't going to let him leave. Maybe... it's for the best if they sedate him and he wakes up hopefully when it's all over...
Reluctantly, Roman shuts his eyes. Swallows. Nods. "Okay..." he whispers, carefully drawing his legs back onto the bed in defeat.

"No— no no n-n-n-no— I don't wan-want this— no—" Roman begins to leave the bed.
Bryce is in front of him before he's fully conscious of Roman's actions. His arms are low, his hands open, but he's not letting Roman get out of the bed.
"No," he says, voice low and firm and unyielding. Roman shoves against him, but Bryce doesn't let himself be moved. Physically, anyway.
"No," Bryce says, voice low and firm and unyielding as he stands in front of Roman and won't let him up.
Roman shoves him with both hands. Or... he tries to. Bryce doesn't move. He tries again with the same result as a again until he's basically just leaving as much weight as he can into his shoulder as he pushes against Bryce.
"Let me go!" he almost screams, desperate, terrified tears rolling down his cheeks.
"Sorry," Bryce murmurs, but it doesn't matter. Doesn't matter that he sounds sincere... Roman just wants to go home. "I'll back off if you stay on the bed."
Defeated, Roman covers his face and slumps, sobbing, legs still over the edge.

Roman pulls his legs back onto the bed. At least he's not going to try to get off the bed while Bryce is gone.
"… O… okay…"
Bryce nods, and lowers his hands. He goes to the door, glancing back as he exits. Roman is still on the bed. His cheeks dripping tears.
Bryce leaves the room.
He finds nurse the nearby, and has a quick chat with her. It's not hard to convince her that Roman does want this. He doesn't even lie, except to call Roman his nephew. She has misgivings, but he talks her around. Reagan's signature is on the documents, after all. And there are apparently notes in his chart, which Bryce didn't know about. And the outcome of the X-Rays show it's clearly in his best interest to have the surgery.
They'll follow in a minute. When he enters, alone (they'll follow in a minute), Roman looks up and shrinks back from him.
Bryce walks over to the chair that's up against the wall, trying not to walk towards Roman more than he absolutely has to.
"I'm sorry," he says, his voice heavy with regret, "I—" He shakes his head instead of continuing. "They'll be back in a minute. You're getting the surgery done."
Bryce steps out for a few minutes and then comes back in. Roman shrinks back a little, nervous...
"I'm sorry," Bryce says, "I—" He shakes his head instead of continuing. "They'll be back in a minute. You're getting the surgery done."
Roman's eyes go wide again immediately in pleading. "No— no no n-n-n-no— I don't wan-want this— no—" He swings his legs over the side again and pushes himself up to the edge, putting weight on his good leg as he starts to try and get up.

They go back to the room. Bryce is good, and helps keep Roman calm when they have to separate and go back to just hand-holding. He's an adult, and an example, and throwing a fit here wouldn't really get him anywhere anyway. So he stays calm.
The nurse sets the bed up and tells them both it'll be up to twenty minutes before the surgeon comes by and they're ready to take Roman back. Then she leaves, and Bryce leans over the bed a little, letting Roman collapse on him again.
"Hey," he murmurs after a moment. "You here, kid?" There's no judgement or pressure in his voice; if Roman had to leave, Bryce can deal with it.
Back in the room, Bryce leans close again and Roman doesn't hesitate to cling.
"Hey," he murmurs after a moment. "You here, kid?"
"You to-tol-told me I have to b-be..." Roman returns, startling himself at the bitterness in his own tone.

They head back to the X-ray room. The actual process doesn't look too bad, Bryce thinks when the nurse explains what's going to happen. Bryce keeps a tight hold on Roman's hand as they get set up, and for a moment he thinks it's going well.
Then they need to get a different angle on it, and they reposition Roman's leg. Roman doesn't — quite — scream. The noise is too strangled to be called a scream. Bryce steps up closer, putting an arm around Roman's shoulders, and Roman turns into his chest, burying his face.
Bryce holds him as they take more images, and almost loses it when they reposition the leg the second time. The nurse tells them what's going to happen, but he's a little distracted. Finally, after way too long, they're done.
Bryce stays all the way to the X-ray room. Once they're ready, the doctors/nurses position Roman's leg.
It hurts.
A strangled sort of almost scream gets out and he turns towards Bryce, clinging as they X-ray, then reposition making him almost scream again. Then they do another X-ray. Then it's over.
It wasn't... wasn't horrible. It hurt, but... whatever they gave him really is helping him keep calm.
That's... unnerving...
He doesn't like that they can control that...

Over the next several minutes, Roman calms, his sobs lowering in volume and his grip growing less bruising. It's remarkable, and Bryce is grateful, and Bryce hates it. Hates that this miracle is the result of drugs Roman would never have wanted to take if he wasn't terrified out of his mind.
After Roman's been calm for several minutes, Bryce shifts a bit, trying to get Roman properly on the bed. He doesn't let go at all while he does, and he ends up on the side of the bed himself, Roman leaning sideways a bit to keep his head buried in Bryce's shoulder.
There's so much Bryce wants to say, and he can't say any of it. Not in public, for some of it. Not after Roman's taken the drugs he wanted to, for others. And some of it wouldn't be for Roman at all, it would just make Bryce feel better.
He murmurs "I love you," but then he worries he's just being a manipulative bastard, even though it's an honest emotion. So he just sits there, rubbing Roman's shoulder.
Once Bryce has settled Roman (both of them, really, though) onto the bed, he murmurs an "I love you."
Roman takes a moment to focus on his breathing and hugs Bryce tighter for a moment. "L-love you, too, Bryce..." It's amazing how much calmer he is, now... Like magic, almost...

"K-k-k— Ok-kay— Oka-kay—" Roman moves his head up and down against Bryce's shoulder.
Bryce feels a little bad for accepting that as consent, but it really will help. He gives the nurse a nod and turns his attention back to Roman. He sees her inject something, but doesn't really pay attention.
"It should start working in the next few minutes," the nurse tells them. "I'll be back after it does." And she leaves them.
Bryce rubs Roman's shoulder, and hopes.
There's a slight cold flush as Roman is sure they inject something. The feeling only makes him panic more, gripping Bryce somehow even tighter as he tries not to break down into full on screaming.
"It should start working in the next few minutes," the nurse tells them. "I'll be back after it does."
She's right. Somehow. Over the next few minutes, Roman's hold on Bryce loosens a little. His heart calms down a bit and isn't pounding so hard in his chest. He's still terrified— there's no doubt about that— but it seems almost manageable, now... His panicked sobbing quiets and he feels like he's able to breathe again...

The nurse offers something to help calm Roman down, and Bryce wants to nod, wants to tell Roman to take it, because he can handle the bruising grip and he can, with effort, handle Roman not being present while his body is stuck with needles, and he can — hopefully — handle Roman after the surgery, but if they try to take Roman away right now, Bryce isn't entirely sure he can handle what he'll do to them.
Roman pushes farther against Bryce. If he comprehended the question, he's probably scared— no, terrified. Even more terrified.
Bryce sighs a little.
"Please, kid? It'll help."
Bryce sighs. "Please, kid? It'll help."
Jerkily, Roman gives a little bit of a nod. "K-k-k— Ok-kay— Oka-kay—" He'll let them do whatever— just... as long as Bryce says it's okay, Roman will try not to fight it.

The nurse is back. She looks at the Bryce and Roman a bit skeptically, but comes in with equipment anyway.
"I'm here to start the IV." She's speaking loudly, trying to be heard above Roman's sobs. "The surgeon and anesthesiologist will come by in a few minutes." She pauses, catching Bryce's eye. "Your help will be appreciated."
He nods. Not that there's a lot he can do…
"Reagan," she says, even louder, "Reagan, I need to start the IV. I'll need access to your arm."
"I'm here to start the IV," the nurse says as she enter, speaking loudly, presumably trying to be heard above Roman's sobs. "The surgeon and anesthesiologist will come by in a few minutes." She pauses, then, "Your help will be appreciated."
Bryce nods, but doesn't make a move.
"Reagan," the says, basically shouting, now, "Reagan, I need to start the IV. I'll need access to your arm."
It takes way too long for it to register in Roman's brain that she's talking to him. That he's supposed to be Reagan. Even after it registers, there's a long moment of hesitation before he lets go of bryce with one hand, still holding him with the other and hiding his face. He tries to just let the one arm be limp at his side so they can do whatever they need to do. He's still shaking horribly, though.

There's a small sob, and Bryce's hand is squeezed with surprising strength.
"You at least need to get on the bed," Bryce whispers. He's not sure he's going to win the argument about Roman leaving, and he's not even sure he should. "Even… You need to move, or let me lift you."
"You at least need to get on the bed," Bryce whispers. "Even… You need to move, or let me lift you."
Roman is quickly breaking down into full on sobbing as he clings to Bryce's hand for dear life, moving himself slowly over to the bed, heart pounding hard in his chest, making him go pale and shaky all over again.
