Runaway - Chapter 3

"I’m pregnant, Adam" she said.

"P-pregnant?"

"Yeah"

He sat still for a few seconds, a million thoughts running through his mind. A million questions that he wanted to ask, but there was one that he thought would be the most relevant at that moment.

"Is it…mine?" He asked.

She didn’t seemed surprised with his question, that helped him to calm down a little bit.

"I don’t know for sure. I mean I don’t know the exact number of weeks yet, but there’s always a feeling in situations like this, you know"

"Is your feeling telling you that it’s mine?" He sounded hasty and even a little bit scared.

"Well, you’re the one with unreliable methods of ‘contraception’, so-" The air-quotes made very clear what she was talking about.

"Are you saying it’s my fault?" he said, a little louder this time and with a tone of indignation.

"No, Adam" she sighed, still sounding very calm which was starting to confuse him "This is not anybody’s fault, okay. This is a beautiful act of God that I will love and embrace"

Adam took a few seconds to calm down inside and actually think about the situation. Maybe he was overreacting, maybe it wasn’t that bad after all…

"Besides…" She continued "I don’t think I’ll even want to know it for sure"

That immediately got him away from his thoughts. “What? Why?”

"The thing is that, when I was feeling sick that day, Matt took me to the doctor, he was there when I found out that I was pregnant so obviously he thinks it’s his baby." She stopped for a moment, as if she wanted to make sure he was understanding.

"And I know I would never be able to tell him otherwise. So I think it would be better if we just, you know"

"Forget everything and just assume that the baby it’s his?" Now everything made sense for him. She wasn’t there to request anything from him. She didn’t want answers she just wanted to tell him what she had chosen and hope that he would agree with it.

"Yeah, basically" she said.

"But, will you be okay? I mean, there’s a chance you may be lying to him"

"I know, I’ve thought about that a thousand times, already. But it would be a lot harder for me to tell him that it isn’t his."

"Okay" he still seemed a little bit confused.

"And let’s be honest, Adam. Something like this could easily destroy both of our relationships. I’m sure you wouldn’t want that since your about to get married, I certainly wouldn’t. And it’s not like we were meaning to make any progress with our relationship" they both smiled slightly as she said that. "So I really think it’s better this way."

"Yeah, you’re right" he didn’t want to question her choice. Obviously, she was right, something like that would definitely ruin their respective relationships. He wasn’t ready to be a father and he didn’t want to. He just wasn’t sure what to think about the whole situation. It certainly wouldn’t be easy to forget that conversation.

"Are you okay?" She asked.

Then he realized that he was a little bit angry with her. It would be a lot easier if she had just told him that she was pregnant with Matt’s baby. They would easily go back at being just friends again and he wouldn’t have to live the rest of his life thinking that he might or might not be a father.

"Adam?"

"Yeah, I’m fine. I just… Is too much to absorb in just a few minutes"

She smiled “I know. It took me a whole week.”

He tried to smile back but he wasn’t sure if it worked. They sat there for another minute. Adam had a feeling that there’s was something he wanted to tell her, but with that many thoughts running inside his mind he couldn’t figure what it was.

"I think I better be going" she said, taking a quick look at her phone. "It’s getting late"

"Okay"

She left and he stayed there for what seemed like an hour until he realized that it really was getting late and went home as well.

This one is short, I know. But I wanted to post this conversation as soon as possible since it was meant to be part of the last chapter. Hey you see what I did there with Adam’s actual phrase from season 6 that turned out to be X’s with a few changes haha. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy. I’ll update TBOTR next week if I can and I’ll try to finish the new video too.
