My 2021 in Review
saw one of my dear mutuals @xxseaveg writing a post like this so I figured I'd share mine, too, even if it's been a few years tbh since I've been vulnerable on this site
at the end of each year, I almost always feel like I haven't done shit, and I still feel like that rn, even though it's not really true.
in 2021, I
1. Dropped out of my PhD. I'd been stalled on my dissertation for a few years and ever since my department got completely defunded and dismantled in 2017 (we love the neoliberal university) things have been pretty difficult without much support. I realized I was tired of stagnating while my friends moved ahead with their lives and careers, and besides, my funding had run out. After dropping out, I had room to do the next thing on my list:
2. I launched my first non-university-affiliated course, on connecting with creativity in the depths of winter. Not gonna talk too much about this bc it's very close to my heart and feels super vulnerable, but if we're mutuals and we already talk, feel free to message me about it.
3. I joined a long poetry workshop to work on a new manuscript. Verse is kind of new for me, but it feels really good, and I love the camaraderie of the other people in the workshop (there are just 3 of us!) and going really deep into each other's work. We're continuing in march after a two month break.
4. I was gifted a keyboard for my birthday this month, and I started noodling around on it. One of my 2022 goals is to write some more songs...
5. I explored my gender!! Again, not gonna talk too much about this one publicly, but feel free to message me.
For me, the Gregorian new year feels different from the Jewish new year...more clerical and less spiritual, maybe? But it feels important to acknowledge as a container for growth if only bc so many people already do and there's kind of an energy around it.
