I WAS WAITING TO SEE IF YOU’D REBLOG THIS ASK GAME I will literally always get excited to hear more about your self inserts lol <3 how about Psycho, Carrie and Peeping Tom for Naomi and Poularia??
LMAO I am very glad you enjoy them so much!! XD <3 ALRIGHTY LET'S GO~
Tumblr media
Psycho (1960): Excluding your f/o, does your s/i get along well with anyone else in canon? Is there anyone they don’t like? Is there someone that doesn’t like them?
Hurm; thinking of people Naomi doesn't get along well with, aside from probably Pegasus... not really? Yugioh is what it is; Naomi doesn't get to have a ton of serious interpersonal conflict partly just because of her role in the story and partly because it's still, at its heart, a pretty feel-good story overall. Pegasus is the only one I could point to (aside from like... bit villains who barely even appear in canon lol) and go "Yeah, Naomi does not like that one." She doesn't trust the guy as far as she can throw him, and while she feels a little bad for him when he suddenly dies, she isn't sorry to see him no longer able to cause harm.
Poularia, on the other hand, has a good selection of more grey characters and situations to look at, and gets to take a more hardline approach in some cases. Looking just at Dragon's Watch alone, she gets along especially well with Taimi and Rox, and is pretty close with Marjorie and Kasmeer, as well. Braham... she and Braham have some sticking points that they take a while to work out, and Braham actually leaves the guild for a little while over that beef. The kid was grieving, angry, and trying to protect his home, but he bit off way more than he could chew and it came back to bite him in the ass. :/ Pol and Rytlock get along pretty well, but Rytlock is... a bit of an enigma, sometimes. And Caithe... Pol started out kind of idolizing her, then had a while where just did not trust that lady for anything, and finally settled into a sort of coworkers dynamic. They're not really friends, but they trust each other enough to work together. Pol's biggest enemies are, of course, most of the Elder Dragons—beginning with Zhaitan, then snowballing into Mordremoth, Kralkatorrik, Primordus, and Jormag. Then there's the entire Nightmare Court and Inquest... Mordemoth's Herald, Scarlet Briar (formerly Ceara), who was just a whole mess in and of herself.... The human god of war, Balthazar. And the fair-weather friends who became bitter enemies—Palawa Joko, who briefly aided Pol and her Pact forces against Balthazar before turning against the Pact for the usual tyrant reasons. And the former Iron Legion Imperator, Smodur the Unflinching, who later became the Voice of Jormag. And... Rytlock's son, Ryland... I think he's too far gone at this point; I don't see him getting free of Jormag's machinations now. Pol does, however, enjoy a very close friendship with the Elder Dragon she personally hatched and raised—Aurene. They've faced down all manner of foes side by side, including three of the aforementioned Elder Dragons and their champion, Palawa Joko, and even the god Balthazar, and always come out on top. She's got friends in all three Orders, as well, and the remaining members of Destiny's Edge are reliable allies whenever they're not personal friends. Probably the most personal relationship Pol has aside from Trahearne is with Canach, who she considers a close friend and... occasionally a little more than that, after Trahearne's death. She's effectively married to her job, however, and Canach is by nature not one to stand for long entanglements, so it's more of a "taking comfort in each other when times are fucking awful" thing for them than any serious, deeper connection. Both struggled in many, many ways during the conflict with Mordemoth, and they shared the burden of surviving that unique hell all Sylvari who got anywhere near that dragon did together. Canach was also a friend to Trahearne and present at his death, so they've had a lot to commiserate over.
Carrie (1976): What’s that one thing that your s/i is always associated with? Even if some people aren’t very familiar with them, what’s that one thing your s/i is known for?
Naomi's most famous for beating Seto Kaiba for first place in his own tournament and winning the "King of Games" title, though she doesn't necessarily consider that her own personal accomplishment. The main thing she's known for on her own, if you remove everything Atem does but that she's credited for, is probably the changes she implements into the game of Duel Monsters after she takes over at I2. Her canon starts out with a slightly improved general card pool over the canonical one of Yuugi's time, with nothing more advanced than Fusion and Ritual monsters and relatively poorly-defined archetypes, but she implements the general idea of an archetype-based deck as well as introducing the first Synchro monsters to the game over the course of her canon.
Poularia is known in every corner of Tyria—throughout every city of the six dominant races, from the Hylek jungle villages of the Heart of Maguuma, to the isolated oases of the Crystal Desert; from the isolationist citystate of the Tengu and the hostile strongholds of the Krait, across the Jade Sea and into the distant land of Cantha—closed borders be damned. Every man, woman, and child, whether they be humble Quaggan tadpoles or legendary figures whose souls wander the Mists themselves, know of the Pact Commander. Second in command and later leader of the alliance that slew two of the Elder Dragons, and the only mortal ever known to become an equal partner to an Elder Dragon in their own right. One of only two mortals ever to slay a god. The only person ever known to have returned from the dead with their soul intact, without the aid of necromantic magic. The Hero of Lion's Arch, the Dragonslayer, Herald of the rise of Aurene and the turning of a new age. But anyone who knows her personally would know her best for her simple love of animals, of all kinds. She can't go five minutes without finding some new and fascinating creature to befriend, study, and train as the perfect companion on the battlefield.
Peeping Tom (1960): How would your f/o describe your s/i?
Oh, man. Seto's not really the sort to indulge in waxing poetic about anyone, but if you managed to get him to talk about her for more than a few words.... Well, he'd say that she's a true duelist, of course, which is his default acknowledgement of anyone he respects as a player, but then he'd also probably describe her as ridiculous (in an oddly endearing way he can't quite get over), too compassionate for her own good, and more cunning than he would have expected given what an idiot she can be, sometimes (in his opinion, anyway). He'd also remark on her stubbornness and creativity.
Trahearne... Trahearne is, in many ways, a polar opposite to Seto. XD If you give him half a chance, he'd happily praise his wife all day, because he just really likes to be free with his praise in general. But also, while Poularia had more natural charisma and raw talent both in the war room and on the front lines, Trahearne had the in-depth understanding of the Pact's first enemy—Zhaitan, and his ever-growing army of undead; as a result, Trahearne was the original Marshal of the Pact and served as the leader of the fledgling alliance. He relied heavily upon Pol during this service as his right hand, chief advisor, and main emotional support, and he's the first to point out how well he feels she served in each and every one of those roles. He would describe her as deadly in battle, a brilliant scholar, and kindhearted and gentle soul who was called to a very emotionally taxing duty. Her skill with nature magic of all forms—both in healing and in dealing death—would probably be the main thing he leans into talking about, since her magic is almost a reflection of his own necromantic abilities. His powers deal with dead things or things that have never lived at all; hers deal only with things that are currently living.

ask game: self insert lore
Hi hi hello hi Rainy!! :D Lots of fun ones here. :3 Let's goooo~!
(spoilers ahead for the Guild Wars 2 story, for my one friend who may wish to avoid them)
Tumblr media
3. how do the other characters generally feel about your self insert?
Naomi is pretty tight friends with most of the main cast. Kaiba understandably dislikes her immensely at the beginning, but forced proximity and Naomi's general kindness and relentless determination to see the good in everyone—including him—slowly wins him over against his will. XD Antagonists range from seeing her as an unfortunate bystander they need to go through to get to their real target, to actually personally having more against her than against the Pharaoh, depending on their own motivations.
10. how do the other characters feel about your self insert and f/o’s relationship?
LOL. Anzu is pretty much the only one who encourages Naomi's insistence on treating Kaiba like a friend and her eventual crush on him from the beginning; Honda and Jonouchi think she's got the worst taste in guys when they find out she's got feelings for Kaiba. The Pharaoh has his reservations, but he's got a unique perspective on their relationship as he knows exactly what it is that Naomi sees in Seto; as such, he is supportive but doesn't exactly encourage her.... at first. By the last arc, most of the team have come around since Seto has done a lot to demonstrate that he's making an effort and learning to be less of a dick in general.
12. how would the fandom view your character?
Oh geeze. XD I hope the fandom would like her.... She has a lot of the traits common to the main cast of the show, and hopefully her spin on Yugi's role in the story is one that will still resonate with people despite her not having the same arc that he did. I do worry a lot about how well she'll be received, though, which is one reason progress on her fic is as slow as it is. I really want to make sure I'm completely satisfied with every last word of every chapter (or at least, a good chunk of the first arc) before I ever expose her story to the fandom at large. Probably very few people will even click on the fic to read it, but I want to be sure a poor reception won't taint my feelings on the work. It's not for the fandom, exactly, anyway, it's for me and if even one other person enjoys it then that should just be icing on the cake.
16. freebie! name a fact about your self insert you want everyone to know.
Naomi is British for a number of reasons, but the main one is literally just because she's a self-insert. I am not British; I'm a born and raised American. However, I am very, very Caucasian with a lot of British and Scandinavian ancestry, and it didn't feel right to cast my s/i as belonging to a race or culture that is not my own, nor did it feel right to whitewash the whole cast like 4kids did when I moved Domino to America. It also just felt... odd to have a random American girl living in Japan for no particular reason, though I can't really put my finger on why that felt off. I therefore created my own take on an American Domino City with a historically logical reason for the city to have an unusually high concentration of Japanese-Americans and other Asian-Americans, and worked from there to find a way to fit Naomi into the new lore. I worked off the known history about Egyptology and who tended to be involved in the digs around the Valley of the Kings in the years after WWII, and also threw in a small background detail where Naomi is distantly related to Howard Carter, the man who discovered Tutankhamen's tomb. This created the basis for the character of Dennis Carter, Naomi's grandfather and my AU replacement for Sugoroku Mutou. Building off of his history and what I wanted Naomi's backstory to look like, she ended up being born in London and having moved to Domino in high school. It's given me a lot of research to do, though, which has been fun lol.

1. what are the basics of your self insert? name, date of birth, height, etc.?
Poularia (Pol to her friends) is a sylvari female, approximately 5'4'' tall and possessing the sort of lithe, graceful build common to her race. She awakened on 50th Zephyr, 1325 AE (= 27th Kainengtah, 1834 CC, = February 19th, 2012 CE). Sylvari weight varies wildly by individual due to their habit of simply growing foliage and/or bark from their own bodies to fill the roles of clothing or armor according to their current needs and shedding it at will, so her weight is neither easily judged nor consistent. The race does tend to be heavier than humans owing to their greater overall density, though, and she's probably in the neighborhood of 200-300 lbs on average despite the elfish build. Emerging just as the cycle of Noon gave way to that of Dusk, Pol's boundless curiosity and instinct for research is matched only by her knack for tactics and skill in combat—both alone or as part of a small group, and in command of an entire army.
5. does your self insert have any special powers or abilities?
Magic is the lifeblood of the planet of Tyria, and therefore it is almost unheard of for any living thing to be born without magic of some kind. Pol awakens with a natural knack for beastmastery and healing magic, as well as a talent with a longbow to challenge that of even the most skilled of Tyria's archers; this combination of innate talents led her to specialize into what we would consider a Ranger class, with her trusty sylvan hound Ilex always found at her side. Technically speaking, these magical talents fall under the broad category of life/death magic; what differentiates a Ranger from a Necromancer is that Rangers work with things that are currently living, while Necromancers exclusively work with things that are no longer living, or have never lived at all. These innate talents grow with time and practice, eventually allowing her to function as either a medic able to keep a whole platoon on their feet single-handedly as a skilled Druid, or as one-woman weapon of mass destruction when commanding powerful pets or channeling their power more directly through some of the most complex branches of beastmastery magics.
9. who are your self insert’s closest friends?
Pol's story spans 10 years and is still playing out, so her circle of friends naturally changes somewhat over time. Early on, one of her closest friends and her primary romantic interest is the sylvari Firstborn, Trahearne; this relationship ends tragically at the end of Zephyr 1328 AE when Pol is forced to kill her husband to free him—and all of Tyria—from the corruption of the Elder Dragon of Plant and Mind, Mordemoth. Pol also had a brief but close friendship with her mentor in the Durmand Priory, Magister Sieran; sadly, Sieran lost her life very early in the story during the initial conflict of the war against the Elder Dragon of Shadow and Death, Zhaitan. Also lost that day was another of her closest friends at the time, a Lightbringer from the Order of Whispers called Tybalt Leftpaw. Pol's closest and most enduring friendship from start to finish is with the norn Necromancer, Evelyn "Evie" Blackhold. They met early in the war with Zhaitan, and went on to work together and fight side by side in every major conflict Tyria has seen in the ten years that have followed so far. Other close friends of Pol's include the members of the guild Pol leads known as Dragon's Watch:
Rytlock Brimstone, a charr Tribune of the Blood Legion, formerly a member of the defunct guild Destiny's Edge, and Tyria's first-ever Revenant.
Rox, a charr gladium formerly of the Iron Legion, and a Ranger with a talent for battlefied support magic as well as an intimate knowledge of explosives.
Braham Eirsson, a norn Guardian seeking to build his own legend and break away from his mother's shadow.
Marjory Delaqua, a human Necromancer of common birth who has contacts just about everywhere, having floated from job to job for a while as a member of the Ministry Guard, a Magister of the Durmand Priory, and finally settled on work as a private investigator in the capital city of the human kingdom of Kryta, Divinity's Reach.
Kasmeer Meade, a human Mesmer born into the nobility of Divinity's Reach but stripped of her title along with her family due to Politics; Kasmeer belongs to the secretive Mesmer Collective and eventually earns her family's title back due to services rendered to the Queen. She and Marjory are romantically involved.
Taimi, a young asura prodigy from the College of Synergetics and apprentice to the master golemancer, Zojja. Orphaned from birth and disabled by a congenital degenerative disorder which will inevitably cut her life tragically short, Taimi's work in the study of dragon magic makes her absolutely invaluable to both Dragon's Watch and indeed to all of Tyria.
Canach, a sylvari Secondborn and engineer, who works with Dragon's Watch often enough to get included but is not an official member. He and Pol share enough experiences during the wars against Mordemoth, Balthazar, and Kralkatorrik that he's an honorary member and close friend to Pol regardless of his other activities.
In a class of its own is Pol's relationship to the Elder Dragon, Aurene. As Aurene's Champion, Poularia is technically in service to the Elder Dragon of Light and Crystal; however, Poularia was also the one to raise Aurene from the egg and who taught the young dragon the value of mortal lives. Their relationship is part friendship, part parental, and part battlefield brotherhood, and entirely a mutual partnership. Though all Elder Dragons have Champions, who gain power from their Elder Dragon in exchange for their service, Poularia is unique among this class because the relationship is mutually "chosen and reciprocated" and built upon empathy and social bonds, rather than the result of manipulation, subjugation, or bartering. Poularia is also the only known Champion of an Elder Dragon who has not been subjected to any form of dragon corruption, though she does gain certain heightened abilities through her bond with Aurene.
16. freebie! name a fact about your self insert you want everyone to know.
ALL sylvari x sylvari pairings look a bit "problematic" to someone unfamiliar or only passingly familiar with the lore—for example, one might notice Pol's date of "birth" is in 1325 AE, but only three years later in 1328 AE, she's having to kill her husband, meaning she's married at the age of three. Furthermore, Pol is not yet a year old when she and Trahearne first become romantically involved, and on top of that, Trahearne is 25 years her senior. Adding to this is the fact that all sylvari are born from the same Mother, the Pale Tree; this makes Pol and Trahearne siblings as well as lovers. On the first point, I would like everyone to be aware that sylvari are never children; they emerge from the Pale Tree as fully-grown and competent adults, and age is irrelevant to them aside from a degree of extra respect afforded to the twelve (well, nine remaining as of this writing) Firstborn: the first sylvari ever to awaken in Tyria. The entire race is only 25 years old at the beginning of the story (so, 35 now), with Trahearne having been the very first of his kind. Both Pol's and Trahearne's approximate dates of awakening are dictated by canon, as the sylvari player character's story begins immediately before they awaken into the world and Trahearne is solidly written into the world as the very first of the Firstborn; I did not choose to give them an age gap, it just is what it is. To the second, I would point out that only the Pale Tree can produce new sylvari; sylvari cannot reproduce in any way on their own as they are plants which cannot produce seeds or fruit of any kind. The Pale Tree is the only one of her kind known to exist. The entire race is born exclusively from this single Tree. This core fact of their biology I would argue makes the relationships between sylvari quite harmless, despite the initial culture shock. Sylvari are not human, nor are they even close to being human; they are the closest approximations to humans that the Pale Tree can produce when working with magical plant material as her medium. Also born from the Pale Tree are the sylvan hounds, which are not dogs but are the closest approximation to dogs that the Pale Tree could create in the same way, and these hounds are every bit as closely related to all sylvari as all sylvari are to each other. The notion of what a sibling even is, or what a lover is, is not the same for sylvari as it is for humans or basically any other being made of flesh and blood rather than leaf and vine; therefore, I would ask that we treat their relationships accordingly.

So since Pol is a non-human s/i with a non-human f/o, and their culture and physiology are very different from ours, I have to write up the context for how their whole race works before I can talk about the details of that whole ship and ooof

Anyway so yeah after Trahearne died the first time I played this game I put the whole story progression on hold so Poularia (my s/i; Pol for short) could go process her grief by reforging Trahearne’s sword and she still carries it into battle to this day
