Thinking about how Seto friggin goes out of his way to design a left-handed duel disk and then ships it directly to Naomi, before he’s even willing to fully acknowledge that they are friends in any way at all, always makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside ❤️❤️❤️

LGBTQ+ Characters in Comics from the 21st century I like
A few years back I did a post on LGBTQ+ characters in comics from the 20th Century I have a soft spot for. When it comes to the new millennium, the last two decades have seen an explosion of such comics and characters. So here is my short little follow up for the 21st century.
Tumblr media
  Jade
Starting off the new millennium the French comic series Djinn with Belgian writer Jean Dufaux, illustrated by Spanish artist Ana Miralles would run through three arcs for 15 years. I’ll never forget the first time during a comics exhibition I saw an absolutely captivating illustration of the character at the heart of the series, Jade. A fascinating, queer, and amoral enigmatic figure, Sultan’s favorite in the last years of the Ottoman Empire spoken of as a djinn who also seems the key to an immense treasure.
Tumblr media
  Fumi Manjôme
With little nods to Japanese girls’ literature and culture Sweet Blue Flowers by Japanese artist Takako Shimura is an enduring yuri series around high school girls and maturing. The shy lesbian Fumi and messy feelings are a major focus. Later adolescence can be an emotional time for anyone. Shimura softly explores when and how her characters mourn disappointments and disenchantment along with finding their identity.
Tumblr media
  Kevin Keller
Archie Comics were a staple of my childhood. The quintessential US slice-of-life comic focusing on a group of teenagers goes way back to 1941. However, the 21st century saw a reinvigoration of the Archie brand. Among the successes the gay Kevin Keller created in 2010 by US comic artist Dan Parent debuted in Veronica #202 and has since enjoyed huge popularity. Eventually, I was also drawn back as an adult reader with the gang grown up in the Life with Archie series. In 2012 Life with Archie #16 saw Kevin not only following in the footsteps of his dad as a soldier in the Army but marrying Dr. Clay Walker. Despite protests from bigoted groups the installment of the series would be another sold out hit earning Kevin the designation as “most important new character in Archie history.” Further a character that has also represented fighting the epidemic of gun violence in the US going on in the series to become a State Senator on the issue.
Tumblr media
  Richard III
Japanese artist Aya Kanno inspired by Shakespeare’s tetralogy Henry VI, Richard III and the famous 15th century War of the Roses in her series Requiem of the Rose King goes in a different direction, making her Richard intersex. Only the first of many choices in this girls’ comic which has also garnered attention from other well-respected artists. YMMV but the saga of this Richard has consistently been one of the more compelling examples over the last decade.
Tumblr media
Lisa Williams and Ally Carter
Beginning as fetishistic illustrations and short strips by Croatian artist Stjepan Sejic (under a pseudonym) on DeviantArt, BDSM comic series Sunstone was a notable read for me in 2015. With genuine class and smart use of humour, the characters Lisa and Ally and their growing relationship are wonderfully relatable on many levels.
Tumblr media
  Ace
If you love the movie Grease but crave something 1950’s vintage queer the webcomic Rock and Riot by Chelsey Furedi might fit the bill. The cast is as wide and beautiful as a rainbow. Among the many teenage delinquent characters is the 17-year-old agender, asexual, demiromantic Ace. And founder of their own gang the Bandits and who definitely does things their own way.
Tumblr media
  Ionel
Another of the top titles from the 2010s I first came across the exquisite mystery webcomic Heart of Gold in the (now defunct) digital magazine Sparkler Monthly. The atmospheric ongoing series features Ionel a panromantic asexual pianist with albinism who is losing his sight and a gay priest Father Dunant who is known as a faith healer.
Tumblr media
  Milagro Villa
I’ve seen feathers, wings, and birds stand in for representations about abuse and trauma before. In the short comic Songbird For A Vulture US artist Naomi Franquiz does exactly that. Crafting one of the most poignant examples of an abuse survivor, found family, and healing included in Power & Magic The Queer Witch Comics Anthology.
Tumblr media
Ed Fiedler and Lucardo von Gishaupt
Forgive me the terrible pun but I’m a sucker for vampires, especially the queer variety. Letters for Lucardo by Finnish artist Otava Heikkilä is a delightful erotic comic series with a romance between vampire Lucardo and the older Ed.
Tumblr media
  Ryô Watari
I’ve gone on about self-actualization in fashion before. Series Boys Run the Riot by Japanese artist Keiko Gaku acutely presents a comic about trans teenager Ryô building confidence, friendships, and a street fashion brand.

Tbr list that I will hopefully complete before the end of summer:
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus
The Orphan's Tales: In The Night Garden by Catherynne M. Valente
Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt
Maurice by E. M. Forster
The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa
Journey at the End of the Millennium by Abraham Yehoshua
The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty
and last but not least: Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin (the fourth book of the Earthsea Cycle - which I'm loving btw)
(In theory Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, Stardust by Neil Gaiman, and Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno by Italo Calvino are included in this list but let's be honest here, I will never manage to read those ones too before the end of August lmao)
Now, my favorite books from 2022 (at least so far):
Grendel by Josh Gardner (!!! i wasn't expecting it to be that great but omg. it really was. gorgeous prose + existential philosophy + tragic antivillain/antihero maneater monster as protagonist? i mean.)
Averno by Louise Glück
The Plague by Albert Camus
Hygiène de l'Assassin and Journal d'Hirondelle by Amélie Nothomb (batshit insane stuff. 100% recommended)
Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen (unhinged fictional women my beloveds <3)
Salomé by Oscar Wilde (unhinged fictional women my beloveds <3 part 2)
Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (ditto part 3)
The Hours by Micheal Cunningham
An Oresteia by Aeschylus, Sophokles, and Euripides (translated by Anne Carson) (and yes, that's where the famous "it's rotten work" "not to me. not if it's you" comes from lmao. also family drama and greek tragedies <3)
technically L'amica geniale/My Brilliant Friend saga by Elena Ferrante (my beloved!!) although that was a reread. but this time I appreciated it even more so I'm including it in the list

I WAS WAITING TO SEE IF YOU’D REBLOG THIS ASK GAME I will literally always get excited to hear more about your self inserts lol <3 how about Psycho, Carrie and Peeping Tom for Naomi and Poularia??
LMAO I am very glad you enjoy them so much!! XD <3 ALRIGHTY LET'S GO~
Tumblr media
Psycho (1960): Excluding your f/o, does your s/i get along well with anyone else in canon? Is there anyone they don’t like? Is there someone that doesn’t like them?
Hurm; thinking of people Naomi doesn't get along well with, aside from probably Pegasus... not really? Yugioh is what it is; Naomi doesn't get to have a ton of serious interpersonal conflict partly just because of her role in the story and partly because it's still, at its heart, a pretty feel-good story overall. Pegasus is the only one I could point to (aside from like... bit villains who barely even appear in canon lol) and go "Yeah, Naomi does not like that one." She doesn't trust the guy as far as she can throw him, and while she feels a little bad for him when he suddenly dies, she isn't sorry to see him no longer able to cause harm.
Poularia, on the other hand, has a good selection of more grey characters and situations to look at, and gets to take a more hardline approach in some cases. Looking just at Dragon's Watch alone, she gets along especially well with Taimi and Rox, and is pretty close with Marjorie and Kasmeer, as well. Braham... she and Braham have some sticking points that they take a while to work out, and Braham actually leaves the guild for a little while over that beef. The kid was grieving, angry, and trying to protect his home, but he bit off way more than he could chew and it came back to bite him in the ass. :/ Pol and Rytlock get along pretty well, but Rytlock is... a bit of an enigma, sometimes. And Caithe... Pol started out kind of idolizing her, then had a while where just did not trust that lady for anything, and finally settled into a sort of coworkers dynamic. They're not really friends, but they trust each other enough to work together. Pol's biggest enemies are, of course, most of the Elder Dragons—beginning with Zhaitan, then snowballing into Mordremoth, Kralkatorrik, Primordus, and Jormag. Then there's the entire Nightmare Court and Inquest... Mordemoth's Herald, Scarlet Briar (formerly Ceara), who was just a whole mess in and of herself.... The human god of war, Balthazar. And the fair-weather friends who became bitter enemies—Palawa Joko, who briefly aided Pol and her Pact forces against Balthazar before turning against the Pact for the usual tyrant reasons. And the former Iron Legion Imperator, Smodur the Unflinching, who later became the Voice of Jormag. And... Rytlock's son, Ryland... I think he's too far gone at this point; I don't see him getting free of Jormag's machinations now. Pol does, however, enjoy a very close friendship with the Elder Dragon she personally hatched and raised—Aurene. They've faced down all manner of foes side by side, including three of the aforementioned Elder Dragons and their champion, Palawa Joko, and even the god Balthazar, and always come out on top. She's got friends in all three Orders, as well, and the remaining members of Destiny's Edge are reliable allies whenever they're not personal friends. Probably the most personal relationship Pol has aside from Trahearne is with Canach, who she considers a close friend and... occasionally a little more than that, after Trahearne's death. She's effectively married to her job, however, and Canach is by nature not one to stand for long entanglements, so it's more of a "taking comfort in each other when times are fucking awful" thing for them than any serious, deeper connection. Both struggled in many, many ways during the conflict with Mordemoth, and they shared the burden of surviving that unique hell all Sylvari who got anywhere near that dragon did together. Canach was also a friend to Trahearne and present at his death, so they've had a lot to commiserate over.
Carrie (1976): What’s that one thing that your s/i is always associated with? Even if some people aren’t very familiar with them, what’s that one thing your s/i is known for?
Naomi's most famous for beating Seto Kaiba for first place in his own tournament and winning the "King of Games" title, though she doesn't necessarily consider that her own personal accomplishment. The main thing she's known for on her own, if you remove everything Atem does but that she's credited for, is probably the changes she implements into the game of Duel Monsters after she takes over at I2. Her canon starts out with a slightly improved general card pool over the canonical one of Yuugi's time, with nothing more advanced than Fusion and Ritual monsters and relatively poorly-defined archetypes, but she implements the general idea of an archetype-based deck as well as introducing the first Synchro monsters to the game over the course of her canon.
Poularia is known in every corner of Tyria—throughout every city of the six dominant races, from the Hylek jungle villages of the Heart of Maguuma, to the isolated oases of the Crystal Desert; from the isolationist citystate of the Tengu and the hostile strongholds of the Krait, across the Jade Sea and into the distant land of Cantha—closed borders be damned. Every man, woman, and child, whether they be humble Quaggan tadpoles or legendary figures whose souls wander the Mists themselves, know of the Pact Commander. Second in command and later leader of the alliance that slew two of the Elder Dragons, and the only mortal ever known to become an equal partner to an Elder Dragon in their own right. One of only two mortals ever to slay a god. The only person ever known to have returned from the dead with their soul intact, without the aid of necromantic magic. The Hero of Lion's Arch, the Dragonslayer, Herald of the rise of Aurene and the turning of a new age. But anyone who knows her personally would know her best for her simple love of animals, of all kinds. She can't go five minutes without finding some new and fascinating creature to befriend, study, and train as the perfect companion on the battlefield.
Peeping Tom (1960): How would your f/o describe your s/i?
Oh, man. Seto's not really the sort to indulge in waxing poetic about anyone, but if you managed to get him to talk about her for more than a few words.... Well, he'd say that she's a true duelist, of course, which is his default acknowledgement of anyone he respects as a player, but then he'd also probably describe her as ridiculous (in an oddly endearing way he can't quite get over), too compassionate for her own good, and more cunning than he would have expected given what an idiot she can be, sometimes (in his opinion, anyway). He'd also remark on her stubbornness and creativity.
Trahearne... Trahearne is, in many ways, a polar opposite to Seto. XD If you give him half a chance, he'd happily praise his wife all day, because he just really likes to be free with his praise in general. But also, while Poularia had more natural charisma and raw talent both in the war room and on the front lines, Trahearne had the in-depth understanding of the Pact's first enemy—Zhaitan, and his ever-growing army of undead; as a result, Trahearne was the original Marshal of the Pact and served as the leader of the fledgling alliance. He relied heavily upon Pol during this service as his right hand, chief advisor, and main emotional support, and he's the first to point out how well he feels she served in each and every one of those roles. He would describe her as deadly in battle, a brilliant scholar, and kindhearted and gentle soul who was called to a very emotionally taxing duty. Her skill with nature magic of all forms—both in healing and in dealing death—would probably be the main thing he leans into talking about, since her magic is almost a reflection of his own necromantic abilities. His powers deal with dead things or things that have never lived at all; hers deal only with things that are currently living.

FLP POETRY BOOK OF THE DAY: The Hatchet Sun by Victoria Dym
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/the-hatchet-sun-by-victoria-dym/
The Hatchet Sun is about leaving home, the darkness of Pittsburgh, and finding home in the light of Tampa, when…heat becomes the only lover to hold, the only weight that feels familiar (Sarah Kay). There is a clarity in exile, a chance for reincarnation. This is a collection of poems about rain and water, about lizards and alligators, about old love and new love, about time and grief, and death; about aging and climate change, about Cormants, Muscovy, mermaids and millepedes, about a wolf who has lost her pack. #life #nature
Victoria Dym is a graduate of Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Clown College with a degree in Humility, a Bachelor of Arts, in Philosophy, from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Masters of Fine Arts, Creative Writing-Poetry from Carlow University. Her two poetry chapbooks, Class Clown, and When the Walls Cave In were published by Finishing Line Press in 2015 and 2018. Victoria’s chapbook, Spontaneous, was selected by Northwest Poet Laureate Katherine Nelson-Born as the winner of the 2021 Poem-A-Day Chapbook Challenge Contest, won a cash prize, and subsequently was published by the West Florida Literary Federation in 2022.
PRAISE FOR The Hatchet Sun by Victoria Dym
In her debut full-length collection, Ms. Dym feeds us stories of love, laughter, and food itself, food is love / love is food, juxtaposed in stark contrast to the often-shocking tragedies that inhabit the human condition. For example, amidst the decadence and pampering of a mother-daughter Christmas Eve, we find a man / in shadow / beds down / blankets on the concrete sidewalk. Themes of longing, impermanence, brokenness, loss, grief, and death echo throughout this poignant work. We are invited into secret places where treasures are kept: a lock of baby’s curls; a dead mother’s rings. The poet asks: Is anybody watching me? Can you see me? Do you hear me? And says outright: I am singing to you. Indeed, the poet sings of nature, both the beautiful and the brutal and we, like the millipede in her kitchen, climb on the wall to observe as human and animal lives mingle. This hybrid-form writing begins in a kind of staccato like stand-up, like the news and with the poet, we are drawn into the possibility of what’s around the next corner. There exist, also in contrast to such staccato, beautifully crafted lines: the holiness of time, the holiness of place / morning’s fog, laced veil. & in the end, the poet honor[s her] own smallness with a graceful bow as she tells us: I bear within me, deep / my own ocean of swirling silence.
–d. ellis phelps, poet, editor, author, of failure & faith, (Kelsay Books, 2023)
The Hatchet Sun is like cutting into light the way one slices into a summer fruit. There can’t help but be sweet juice dripping. In these poems Victoria Dym writes with all the senses leaning into sensuality by skillfully mixing and remixing the language of life, love and grief. These poems move seamlessly from human, to animal, to nature and back using facts, tenderness and humor. The images twist and turn to create a new way of seeing. The overall breath of this gorgeous work speaks of achievement and celebration in the midst of a melancholy as Victoria writes in the poem “Mermaid,” I am singing to you this mermaid’s dream—to shed these scales, to trust my legs—to walk onto the land, upright, drenched—to wrap my siren thighs with yours. I am singing to you. This kind of sensual awareness walks the thin line between real and possible. This is Victoria’s charm and ability to create a two-toned consciousness which makes each poem extend the reach of reality.
–Sheila Carter-Jones, author of Three Birds Deep, Naomi Madgett Book Award
The prose poems in ‘The Hatchet Sun’ took my breath away. Violence, avoidance, and dysfunction abound in such works as ‘History’, but the prose itself lingers in the mind as pure poetry. An alternative view of Dym’s vision is presented in her sensuously explored visual images and sounds, and the satisfactions of maternal feeling, with reference to her daughter, as ‘my very best work’. The father monolith rears his head from time to time in this brimming and varied collection, and a wise poet like Dym recognises the role of generation and inheritance. Life is a camouflage of colour and shade in the poem ‘When the Octopus Dreams’, and we, like the multi-brained, three-hearted octopus, are pulled into our emotional colors according to experience. The writer enquires ‘Am I changing color?’ and the burden of obligation demands that this beautiful poem conclude with the instinctive longing ‘If only I had another brain, another heart, an extra arm’.
The collection includes poems of desire, and a stomach ‘fills with several hundred chrysalises . . . & moths spill from my lips . . .’ This is where Dym triumphs, in her evocation of what is lost forever but which may at times be tremulously attained again. There is a delicacy to such work, a wistfulness light as a door knocker lifted up by the wind.
This sensuous and unashamedly intellectual poet brings gifts of authority to her work, which presents itself here as achieved, memorable and entirely compelling. As a bulwark against changing times, poems such as Love Opus 18 for the Bassoon show the full scope of a journey characterised by curiosity and the writer’s own sense of her (and by inference our) place in the cosmos. In such a cosmos, math, music, and history coalesce quite magnificently. A collection to be savoured.
–Mary O’Donnell, poet, novelist, short-story writer, Massacre of the Birds (Salmon, 2020)

THEN || 1996
“Hey, Fred!” [Y/N] called out to him, laughing loud enough for him to hear from the distance. “Look at what I found.”
As he approached her, he could only think of the dress and the way it looked so unbelievably good on her. It almost felt as if he wouldn’t mind if today became everyday.
“Hurry!” she called out.
When he made it to where she was standing, she pointed at something on the tree’s body. It was dark, so Fred couldn’t see what she was trying to show. “Uh, what am I s’pposed to be looking at?”
Groaning, [Y/N] pulled out her camera from her pocket and snapped a photo, the flash illuminating the particular part she was pointing at.
“Where?” he whined, squinting his eyes. “You know, if you brought that to the Burrow, dad would lose it.”
“Like how I’m losing it with how much you’re being such a big oaf right now?” You rolled your eyes as he chuckled before taking a snap again.
And finally, Fred saw it: On a beech tree rudely carved, ‘NC loved me.’
“Who’s NC?” Fred asked, leaning closer to it, his eyes fixed on the spot now that his eyes adjusted to the darkness.
“Naomi Campbell,” she said as she sat down, making herself comfortable when she decided that it was better to remain standing.
Fred looked at her. “Really? Why would she love whoever wrote this? Why did she do it? Was she scared or was she bored?”
“Wow, you are awfully slow.” [Y/N] stretched her arms. Fred let out a low oh. “I mean, it could mean Nicolas Cage, too.”
“Or Neville Chamberlain,” said Fred, “or Nick Carter, the one from Backstreet Boys and the one from the Ar—”
“Alright! So you know a lot of people, big deal. I just wanted to show what was written on it.”
The leaves danced, and they stood shoulder up to shoulder with their backs to the tree as they stared at the school building buzzing with slow music from the distance.
It was clearly a prom night, and she could recall the time of the Yule Ball. He had went with Angelina Johnson, and her with a student from Durmstrang. It deeply unnerved him, even ending up mocking your date’s accent the entire week after that. He did a bad job: Vould you like some shicken? Da? Da? Da!
“So you want to dance or what?”
“No thanks,” she told him, elbowing him lightly. “Oh, don’t take it too personally, it’s just that my back hurts is all.”
“Yeah, and my legs hurt because you made me walk all the way here instead of Apparating but you don’t hear me complaining, do you?”
[Y/N] made a face. “I think I just did.”
“Well. . .” He cleared his throat, seeing that he was trailing off to no direction. “Then well played.”
“Da,” she said in the mock accent Fred had done a year ago.
While Fred stood still in his place, she turned around to pay the tree a careful visit again, studying the wooden vandalism etched into its surface. She ran her hands over it.
“Can you believe that we just graduated a few days ago?” asked [Y/N], humor gone in her voice.
“That I can believe but there is one thing that I can’t,” he said before following her gaze and looking at the tree. He looked back to her.
“And what would that be?” she started, her eyes narrowing. She suspected this was heading for a joke, just like majority of everything he’d told her.
Heck, she could still remember the first time they met; it wasn’t as pretty as she wanted it to be: It was only her first day in Hogwarts, and being away from her family in a world she wasn’t familiar with didn’t make it any easier.
“Quick! Get Professor McGonagall!” Fred had told her during their first year, pointing at the cat approaching the Whomping Willow. The tree was silent and still, but [Y/N] went rigid nonetheless. “She’ll die if she goes to the tree because it hates cats!”
“Our Transfiguration teacher? That — that’s her? Why—?”
“Yes, I can’t help because I left my wand. Now go get her! Hurry!”
On the verge of crying, [Y/N] rushed to the cat, shrieking. “Professor!” she called to the cat as she crouched down lower. “Professor, the tree will kill you!”
The cat sat down, staring at her with dead eyes.
“This isn’t you, Professor! Please come back!” The cat licked its own hand before walking off. [Y/N] cursed under her breath for what she was about to do. With a wrinkled nose, she chased after the cat, grabbing it with her own hands as she tripped, hitting the bulk of the Whomping Willow. As she shrieked, the branches began to dance, and she let the cat try to claw out of her grip. “I’m so sorry, Professor!”
Guilty, Fred swept in and grabbed her by her cloak’s hood. “Leave Profe — leave the cat!”
“But it’s Professor McGo—Ow! Professor, stop cla—”
“No, it’s not,” Fred yelled over the chaos. “Leave the cat!”
He dodged a flying branch, and she also missed getting hit before Fred got her ducked just in time. “I’M NOT LEAVING THE CAT.”
“JUST DO IT!”
With a yelp, [Y/N] let go of the cat, and she watched it with a great sense of relief as it seamlessly fled the scene. The two then jumped and dodged until they made it out, probably barely alive.
She had to be taken to Madam Pomfrey for the scratches, and she swore that she’d get back at the boy. The catch was that she used to have problems telling the twins apart, so her plans often ended with a ‘never mind.’
It took some time for her to warm up to him and eventually be friends, but of course, the banter was still there wherever they went.
“Aw, do you not trust me?” Fred jokingly asked.
“When you tell someone that a stray cat is your teacher, trust issues often play a big part after, you know.”
He threw his head back in laughter. “You’re almost just as funny as the one who wrote this.”
“What, you don’t think it’s romantic?”
“They just drew on a tree,” he said as though the sentiment of it was simply dumb, “so what? It’s kinda like R plus G written inside a heart. It’s just vandalism.”
“Just — just vandalism? It’s a story, Fred. A love story.” She groaned when Fred snorted, annoyed at his opinion on these things. “Or an apocalyptic story if you prefer that.”
“How is that a story?”
“Okay, come here.” She moved closer to the tree and pointed right where it was carved. Fred complied. “What do you think when you read ‘NC loved me’?”
“I think whoever wrote it was stupid,” he said with a laugh.
“Agh, I’ll tell you what I think,” she started, dusting her hands before crossing her arms. “What I’m trying to say is you’ll never know what this meant to whoever wrote it and to whom it was written for because . . . the story behind it is theirs and theirs only. ‘NC loved me’ could mean a lot of things: Maybe John was here with NC and they broke up here, maybe they were jo—”
“Who’s John?” Fred joked.
“Just a placeholder name — stop interrupting me.”
“Right.”
“I launch into an epic monologue and that’s what you say? Some friend you are.”
Fred stood up, and this time it was his turn to stretch his arms. “Fine.”
“What do you mean ‘fine’?”
“Let’s write something, too.”
She watched him as his hair danced along to the swaying of the tree. He was beautiful, and she wished she could see him clearly. “I got to you, didn’t I?” she teased.
“That you did. Now, do you have something sharp so we could write on it?”
“Oh, we’re not gonna carve on the tree. It would harm it.”
“But you said—”
“John didn’t know better, but we do. We’ll write on a school bathroom.”
“Oh, so typical vandalism, then?”
“Mhm, come on, we’ll pretend we’re there for prom.”
They walked away from the tree side by side, and Fred took one last glance in the tree’s direction before catching up with her.
▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰
Getting inside wasn’t as hard as they thought it would be. They managed to slip in unnoticed, looking just like another young couple when they were anything but.
“I’m Nred Ceasley,” Fred told a younger guy in a tux as an introduction, all the while reveling in his fake name. She had to keep her head down to stifle her laugh as they made their way out of the school.
The pair swore to keep a low profile as to keep themselves from being caught, but it was truly hard to stay true to that goal when Fred spotted the photo booth being managed by a younger boy in a rented tux.
Fred put on a purple cowboy hat and threw a orange mousy wig on her, topping her head with a pirate hat. After he put on orange shades, he then yelled, “Pose!”
After four shots, the two hurried away, and she lead him away from the school before anyone else could notice.
“I thought we were gonna draw in the bathroom?”
“I changed my mind,” she shrugged.
“Again? If that’s so easy, then why can’t you change your mind about me?”
“I already have but if you keep on pestering me, I can change it back again.”
“Oh, I definitely wouldn’t want that.”
[Y/N] pulled out a Sharpie from her pen and showed it to Fred. “I nicked it from the photo booth.”
“Couldn’t we have at least stayed to dance?”
“You don’t have to make it so obvious that you’re obsessed with me,” she joked, gently nudging him as she brushed some of her hair away from her face.
“If we’re not gonna draw like you said so, where are we even going?”
“You’ll see,” she said.
“See, normally, I’m the one who gets to say that.”
She only laughed as they got farther and farther away from the school. “What makes you think today’s a normal day?”
“Fair point.”
“So what’s your plan for growing up?”
“I don’t have one,” said Fred, smiling. When they reached the sidewalk, Fred switched places with her and told her, “I happen to be a gentleman nonetheless.”
A car passed by. A moment later, [Y/N] led him to a bus stop. That car seemed to be the last active thing they’d ever see that night; the road was visibly empty save for several lit lampposts.
“What time is it?” she asked.
“If you don’t know, how would I?”
Laughing, the two sat down on the bench. “So, really, what’s your plan?”
“You remember the joke shop I told you about?”
“Vividly, yes.”
“That’s my plan.”
“That’s great!” she exclaimed, nothing but excitement for him. “Do something pretty while you can. So where do you plan on having—?”
“Oh, we already have one in Diagon Alley. It’ll be all set soon. George is setting it up as we speak.”
[Y/N] stood up by surprise. “Then what are you doing here with me?”
“Eh, well, you’re my friend,” he dramatically said.
“I’m just your friend, he’s your brother.”
“What do you say we add four more letters to that?” suggested Fred, but she only seemed confused. He then cleared his throat before counting letters off his fingers. “G-i-r-l. Girlfriend. You want in?”
“That’s a very tacky way to ask someone out,” she said, trying to pass it off in case it was a joke. She waited for him to take it back, but he didn’t. “Oh, so you’re really. . . ?”
“I am, and I’d appreciate an answer right away.”
She didn’t sit back down. “Er — Merlin, I can’t believe I’m saying this but add b-o-y to fri — Ew, it sounds tacky. Just yes, sure.”
“Kind of anticlimactic, don’t you think?” Fred said in jest.
“Well, it’s your fault for asking me in such a corny way.” Her eyes went to the wall behind him. He followed her gaze.
On a bus stop in the town was written, ‘We Rule the School,’ written for anyone to read and to see, written for anyone with eyes in their head.
“I’ve got an idea!” she squealed, bringing out the Sharpie and removing the cap. Fred watched as she leaned her knee on the bench before writing something right below the ‘R’ from the bigger vandalism. “Don’t worry, it’s a permanent marker.”
Fred leaned in to read it. Unlike the one they found on the tree, this one seemed far from rudely carved; it looked fragile, for it was written as gently as possible. It said words he never thought he’d see written on a wall, much less see: ‘FW loves me.’
“Do I, though?” he joked.
“You better. Otherwise, this would be hella embarrassing,” she said with a nervous laugh.
“Don’t worry, I do,” he said. “A lot.”
“Good, because we’re trying to beat NC and John. See? I used ‘loves’ instead of ‘loved’ because—”
Fred pressed a finger against her lips, silencing her. “Shh, it gets ruined when you try to explain everything.”
“My bad, then,” she said. The two of them were now standing, their noses almost touching. “Don’t fall asleep on the ride home, okay?”
“[Y/N], I can promise you a lot of things except for that,” Fred said with a laugh before leaning in to press his lips against hers, and all was right in the world.
NOW || 2011
Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes has been a success, a huge one. Fred watched as young students about to start their first year and a couple older ones shuffling about, pointing at their packaged products. Some parents stood outside, waiting for their kids, but there were also some of them inside the shop, mixing about.
“Hey, mum!” called out a little girl. “Look at what I found!”
Fred looked up from his desk. It was as if he’d seen this before. From afar, she watched as the kid pulled out one box of Comb-a-Chameleon and run to the door, showing it to her mother.
The woman smiled encouragingly until her eyes met Fred’s, and the smile he had grown so used to seeing from a long time ago faltered. The child opened the door a bit just enough for her mother to hear her ask, “Can I get just one of these?”
And for the first time in a very long time, Fred heard her speak as she told her daughter, “Sure, sweetie.”
The little girl beamed up at her mother before running back to the counter where Fred sat. It was only then did Fred realize how much she resembled [Y/N]. Was it too much to wish that he was this child’s father? That this was like a normal day in his life, his daughter coming over to visit him in work as a surp—
“Sir?” said the child, jolting him back to reality. Fred cleared his throat before he greeted the child.
After it was paid for, the child thanked him enthusiastically before making her way towards the door. She had trouble pushing it open, and so her mother helped her out, swinging it open for her while laughing.
“You can’t open the door completely, huh?” said [Y/N], a familiar bright smile on her face. The little girl laughed as well. “Come on, let’s go get you a wand.”
As the door closed shut behind her, she risked a glance back through the small window of the door to get a look at Fred.
He was still staring, dumbfounded; but even so, he found himself smiling. To his surprise, she smiled back. And with one last downcast gaze with each other, she turned her back on him once more before going after her daughter.
Fred sunk back to his seat. His eyes went to one railing of one of the stairs, and he stood up to approach it, eyeing it with a feeling even he couldn’t tell. Written on it was her initials, with the words ‘loves me’ right beside it.
He took out one of the Muggle markers he’d bought not so long ago and began to write a letter over the ‘s.’
He ran his hand over it. ‘[Y/I] loved me,’ and he suddenly remembered the bus stop from which the first part of a so-called story began. Without thinking or even saying goodbye to anyone, he grabbed his coat and left.
He Apparated not too far from the bus stop, and he could see its back very clearly. Someone was sitting on the bench, he could tell. By the time he made it to the front of the bus stop, he found a young teenager with headphones on. She didn’t even look at him.
He paid this no mind as his eyes went to the bus stop, scared that it had been covered by an advertising tarpaulin when he took in the large piece of vandalism, saying what it had said years before: ‘We Rule the School.’
Then below the ‘R’ was written, ‘FW loves me.’
Clearly, other people thought it stupid, having written an arrow to it with another message saying, ‘Ew romantiks.’ Fred only laughed, knowing [Y/N] would have defended the sentiment of what she had written. All around the entire space was more vandalisms, some even drew inappropriate doodles, some wrote initials, and so on.
Fred’s eyes went to the young teenager again.
‘What I’m trying to say is you’ll never know what this meant to whoever wrote it and to whom it was written for because . . . the story behind it is theirs and theirs only.’
You’re right, he thought. This story is ours and nobody else’s.
That girl sitting right there wouldn’t know what happened to who had written ‘FW loves me,’ just like they never knew who had rudely carved ‘NC loved me’ on the surface of the tree, and maybe it’s better that way. It’s better to have the only thing you know of someone else’s tale is that one vandalism.
Fred smiled genuinely for the first time, thinking back to the time he’d spent with her. It’s beautiful, all of it. The only shame of it is that the past is all there’ll ever be along with this short message.
A bus finally stopped in front of them, and the teenager got in, still not paying him any attention much less a glance.
Fred could stay longer and add a ‘d’ over the ‘s’ just like what he did in his shop and just Disapparate later on, but he didn’t. Instead, Fred got on the bus and took a seat by the window, watching the bus stop disappear and with it ‘FW loves me,’ always there to be seen by everyone passing by until someone decides to cover it up.

4, 13, 18, 24, 27 "S", 29, 37, 39, 44 for the book asks? :)
4. Is there a book that you think needs a bigger fandom??
All of my favourites XD Ok, tbf at least the ones where I got attached to the characters have small fandoms (Realm of the Elderlings, First Law, Poppy War, The Goblin Emperor, Howl's Moving Castle) contrary to books I love and have close to no content like "The Seventh Bride" by T. Kingfisher. I wish there was fanart for it, but I also wouldn't get deep into fandom talk about that book. I guess I would like Octavia E. Butler's books to have bigger fandoms, especially the Xenogenesis trilogy and Earthseed duology. I would just love to see fanart for it and memes and theory and analysis posts for those books. I understand that the books I love aren't the kind of books that call for a big fandom of artists or people that are into fandom to begin with though. A lot of people read them, but don't create anything for it or discuss it without tiring :(
13. How many books have you read this year??
Counting some manga and graphic novels, I've read 91 books so far :D
18. Do you know anyone else that likes books??
Yes. None of my irl friends love books as much I do, but two of them read around 6 books a year at least. My online friends are bigger readers and I love that I found people with similar interests through tumblr <3
24. Have you read a book that was really hyped up but you didn’t enjoy??
Ah, "The Name of the Wind" question ahah Quite a few actually. I will just leave a list with links for the reviews if I said something about it. This is according to the hype I saw online because I saw none irl for most of these. Portuguese people don't care XD
The Gunslinger (Dark Tower #1) by Stephen King (the author himself is overhyped. I had an english professor that knew it too); "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway; "The Sorrows of Young Werther" by Goethe; "The Last Wish" by Andrzej Sapkowski; "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss; "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown; "Prince of Thorns" by Mark Lawrence; "All Systems Red" by Martha Wells; "Red, White & Royal Blue" by Casey McQuinston (sorry); "Daisy Jones & The Six" by Taylor Jenkins Reid; "Uprooted" by Naomi Novik; "Every Heart a Doorway" by Seanan Mcguire;
The so bad I gave up (joke): "The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories" by Angela Carter; "The Eye of the World" by Robert Jordan; "The Cruel Prince" by Holly Black; "Gideon the Ninth" by Tamsyn Muir; "Circe" by Madeline Miller; "Sorcery of Thorns" by Margaret Rogerson; "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet" by Becky Chambers.
Sorry for the long list. You can see why I am tired of being fooled XD
27. Name a book that you own starting with (S). Have you read it?? Did you like it?? If you haven’t read it, are you looking forwards to it.
“Strange the Dreamer” by Laini Taylor. I haven’t read it yet and once again this is a book that was super popular on the internet so I am afraid. I’ve heard about the insta love which also doesn’t motivate me, but I the writing style seems beautiful and the main character seems to be one I would like. I am hoping to like it, but I am keeping my expectations low.
29. Have you ever bought a book because the cover was so nice??
Guilty as charged. I bought “The Jungle Book” and I am keeping it because of the cover, but I didn’t like it ;-; I mean, look at this:
Tumblr media
I hate artists...
37. Is there a book that you think everyone should read??
No. Everyone has different tastes and just like I believe that there is a book for everyone I also believe that there is no book that will please everyone. Now, a book that someone should read in order to be more open minded and empathethic might exist but I haven’t read it so I can’t recommend it. I also think that for personal improvement is better to talk to as many people as we can that have different experiences. It’s always better to learn from others than read it in a book and a lot more informative and fun too.
39. What book that has made you cry??
Most of the Realm of the Elderlings books by Robin Hobb, especially “Fool’s Fate”. Never before I cried that hard because of fiction and I am sort of a crier (or used to be before this book broke me). There are more books that made me cry, but besides that only “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” by Taylor Jenkins Reid comes to mind and I didn’t cry that much.
44. Favourite book quote, go.
I don’t have only one, but I will insert a few here:
Robin Hobb (there are so many but I’ll stick to 2 short ones):
“You seek a false comfort when you demand that I define myself for you with words. Words do not contain or define any person. An heart can, if it is willing” - Golden Fool
“I never confuse the cost of something with it’s value.” - The Mad Ship
Patricia A. McKillip (there are so many but I’ll stick to 2 short ones):
“When you open your mind and hands and heart to the knowing of a thing, there is no room in you for fear” - The Riddle-Master of Hed
“Soon is such a long word.” - The Forgotten Beasts of Eld
“Sometimes being a friend means mastering the art of timing. There is a time for silence. A time to let go and allow people to hurl themselves into their own destiny. And a time to prepare to pick up the pieces when it's all over.” - “The Women of Brewster Place” by Gloria Naylor
“War doesn’t determine who’s right. War determines who remains.” - “The Poppy War”, R.F. Kuang
"Do you know what’s worse than a villain? A villain who thinks he’s a hero. A man like that, there’s nothing he won’t do, and he’ll always find himself an excuse." - “Last Argument of Kings”, Joe Abercrombie
“I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.” - “The Song of Achilles”, Madeline Miller
"If a man has to say trust me, Gogu conveyed, it’s a sure sign you cannot. Trust him, that is. Trust is a thing you know without words." - “Wildwood Dancing”, Juliet Marillier
I am sure that there are many more from other books and that I forgot because I am bad at writing them down. I hope to get better at it.
Thank you for the questions!
