Similar to sharks, orcas play an important role in keeping the ocean and animal populations healthy & in balance. Sadly, the 74 remaining southern resident orcas in the Salish Sea are currently starving to death due to their prey, the chinook salmon, also being at an extremely low population number. There are 4 dams in the Snake River that are preventing the salmon from repopulating and thriving as they typically would. We had pod members from 3 different CA transient matrilines meet up and socialize around our boat. For the duration of our trip these whales came back to our vessel multiple times to checkout our passengers on the bow. Even with well over 100 different individuals now under my belt, I can confidently say this was the most unbelievable experience I’ve been apart of — Members from THREE different CA transient killer whale matrilines mugged us for well over an hour today. Parts of the CA216, and CA138, as well as the infamous CA51’s played, socialized, mated, and breached around our vessel today. Killer whales are so rare in California, this is only the third time I’ve seen them in these waters all year! —This wouldn’t be possible without the best crew in the world aboard the @condorexpresssb !! I am just beyond thankful for the encounters and people our wondrous oceans have given me. Unlike landscape photography, astrophotography, or portrait photography, photographing marine life is all about sight, reactions, and knowing your subject. There is no time to set up your shot, no second chance to capture a moment, and no remorse from your subject — When I first starting photographing wildlife, I had no clue what I was doing. I couldn’t get a good shot of a common dolphin or humpback to save my life. With the help of @kristincampbell and just spending more time on the water, my craft started to take shape. The number one thing I can recommend to people trying to get into wildlife photography is to know your subject. Spending time in nature and learning about their behaviors, patterns, and interests is the best way to capture the brief moments we get into their world. Moments like this fill my heart with happiness, my voice with high pitched squeals, and my eyes with tears every time — This encounter really got me thinking about the social structure and range of Biggs or Transient killer whales. We first spotted CA216 “Jagged,” and one of her juveniles traveling mid channel around 9:30. We followed them for a good 30 minutes. I then spotted more spouts on the horizon with curved black dorsal fins breaking the surface of the water. “Surely this was the rest of her family?” I thought out loud. I was wrong — This turned out to be the CA138 pod of killer whales (shown here). 5 minutes spent with these two groups, and the CA51s came in from the opposite direction. Killer whales are so far and few in California that this had to have been a planned meetup. Whatever the reason, however the timing came together, I will never know. Seeing three different families is exceedingly rare here. The range of these whales is extremely large and vastly unmapped. The beauty of science is that we can come up with hypotheses to help us further progress our knowledge of these complex beings, but I don’t think we will ever fully understand why they do what they do...
