“KALININ K-7” after being made aware of this behemoth by a member of the Scarborough Public Library “sketchers” group, I used yesterday’s get together as an opportunity to doodle it. It was designed by notable Russian WW1 aviator Konstantinos Kalinin born to a Russian family in Warsaw. He was educated in Odessa and Kyiv, now Ukraine This monster was one of the largest aircraft ever built at that time and was constructed at a factory in Kharkiv. The bomber/gunship version included multiple canons, machine guns and 21,200 lbs. of bombs. Originally called “a victory of the utmost importance” by the Soviets, it was in the end a colossal failure. A spectacular crash in 1933 killed 15. Kalinin was later “rewarded” for his efforts by being executed during the Stalinist purges!
