Linda Flynn-Fletcher

I think Linda Flynn-Fletcher is potentially one of the most misunderstood characters in the show.

It think comes from a natural enough place. Her role in the show is of course, to act as the potential threat to their summers of fun. While they boys never see her as a threat, narratively she's the big bad. If she sees it, its game over.

Here's the thing though. She's a not a bad mom. Her children LOVE her. Similarly to how Phineas and Ferb absolutely adore Candace and would do nearly anything she asked, Phineas, Ferb and Candace all love and respect their mother and don't disobey her. Now a bit of this is clearly Linda being a more permissive parent, but any rules that Linda has Phineas and Ferb never do anything to disobey their mother. While I wouldn't be surprised if there were one or two instances where Candace disobeyed her mother willfully, the closest I can think off off hand is Candace not doing a bunch of chores that she was supposed to do. Really, the fact that all her kids love her, shows how much all her kids feel loved in their household. And I think that's super important. Candace wrote a song about how much she feels loved by her mom, even if her mom is dismissive of Candace. But she still goes with Candace to see what the boys are up to even if she doesn't believe it. She sets boundaries on how often Candace can bust the boys sure. But she hasn't forbidden Candace from doing it altogether. Nor does she punish Candace for presumably lying?

At MOST Linda will say something like: "let's get you out of the sun" after a failed bust. The worst of it I think is probably the time Linda made her promise not to try or suffer the Pharaohs curse. Which, was just some guy in a Pharaoh costume telling Candace curse you. Linda goes out of her way to read books to try and deal with her daughter. She and Candace still clearly hold a lot of affection for each other and do spend a decent amount of mother daughter time together. Linda gives books to her daughter, tries to direct her to other activities, and finds her sleep busting cute, and sometimes goes out of her way to do activities her daughter wants to do with her. All things considered Linda is REALLY patient about Candace's busting. Could she be doing more to get to the bottom of why Candace is presumably acting out? Sure. But Doofensmirtz could also be doing a better job of listening to his daughter and not insulting her (or do we not remember why Vanessa wears earbuds around the house) but we all call him a really good dad.

A LOT of shows have kids hiding a secret from a parent for one reason of another. But while the crux of the show rests on Linda not knowing what her sons are doing, its not because its a secret. The boys aren't hiding it from her. The boys genuinely believe she knows. Lawrence genuinely believes she knows. Candace is the only one in the family who really grasps the situation.

Linda's ignorance, her disbelief of the wild shenanigans that her children get into is easily mistakable for normality. For representing the oppressive day to day. The same thematic antagonist as school. A mom who wants whats best for her kids, and thinks that whats best for them is them being normal, without realizing what's really best for them. After all why else we saw what would happen if she found out in Quantum Boogaloo. But the fact of the matter is aside from that one future (which also featured an effectively evil leader in Doofensmirtz, and therefore implies more factors at play than just Doofensmirtz and Linda's characters), we don't really know how it would play out in the long term. Future Linda even just kinda moves on after discovering the truth.

Linda is exactly like her kids. She just does the same things on a less physics breaking scale. The woman has like 37 different hobbies. She takes a cooking class, donated an art sculpture, is part of a jazz group. She has a background in astrophysics. She was a pop star. She won a meatloaf contest. She takes french lessons. The fact that Linda has several hobbies is part of the reason the formula works at all. Linda is constantly trying new things which gets her out of the house, while her sons are trying their own new things. Her absence is what prompts Candace to have to go looking for her. Also, What Do It Do when the moment Linda gets put in Candace's position she acts the exact same way.

Also it's why she and Lawrence are so compatible. They have a lot of weird hobbies they spend together. She likes Lawrence's history references. They watch car racing together. They went spelunking together. They go bowling regularly enough to have equipment. She has played the bagpipes while Lawrence danced (which sidenote: do you think she taught Candace how to play the bagpipes?).

Not to mention her extended family. Think about it. Her mom was a competitive roller derby skater who once bit a skate and shook it like a dog with a chew toy and pulls elaborate pranks with her identical twin. Really she's a lot like Candace with her aggressive passion. Her dad apparently won a balloon race, but tells the story in the most straightforward way possible, sometimes very oblivious, but is overall a lot like Phineas. Her sister is an adrenaline junky. And back to Quantum Boogaloo for a minute: Her granddaughter is just like Candace, Grown up Candace is a lot like Linda. Do you not see the implications!!?!?!? LIKE???? DO YOU NOT REALIZE THAT LINDA WAS PROBABLY A LOT LIKE CANDACE AND PHINEAS WHEN SHE WAS YOUNGER?!!?! YOU THINK IT SKIPPED A GENERATION OR SOMETHING???

Do you think Linda used to complain about Tiana??? Do you think Linda thought her family was weird and was embarrassed by them??? Do you think Linda ever called herself the only mature/normal member of her family?? LIKE CANDACE DOES????

Anyway, Linda is just like her family. Sure, she is RELATIVELY more normal, but that's relative, and probably simply because the universe bends itself around to keep her from knowing. Linda literally cannot find out about the real nature of her universe. Linda is just a grown up version of her children, seeking to make the most of each day, but within the bounds the universe has set upon her, both as an adult woman and mother, but also in the laws of physics expected of her. But she still makes the most of her life. You don't have to build a roller coaster to make the most of each day and all that.

I think if Linda is representing anything its that even parents can have rich fulfilling lives. Where they make the most out of each day. Having fun with your life doesn't stop with adulthood. Even if you have more responsibilities doesn't mean you can't have fun? Sure childhood is something you can't get back but growing up isn't inherently bad either?

I would hazard the blanket statement that every ND person has some amount of trauma related to their speaking volume.

Mine is smaller than many, but I very distinctly remember my 2nd grade teacher ascribing malevolence to my inability to project my voice when we read aloud in class. And teasing me about it, because I could get loud when I was excited about something, or at recess. Like she was gathering evidence against me for court. "see??? you can do it now, so obviously in this other situation, you're not doing well because you're trying to make me mad at you."

(A lot of my moments realizing I'm different are from that year, which is probably due to a 60/40 split of timing and that awful woman lol. Typically my flavor of autism didn't draw people's ire much, because I was quiet and polite. And the ADHD kids have it way worse.)

This isn't the shit that keeps us up at night, it just makes our lives overcomplicated.

ND people are drawn to each other because... why wouldn't you want to make friends with people who see the world similar? And that shared history of no one understanding you is a powerful flavor enhancer. But it gathers together people with overactive senses into rooms full of people who shout when they're excited.

So now as an adult I sit there, blasted by my gf's shouted infodumping, not processing it because it's twisting all my nerves upside down and it feels like I am sitting inside a tornado siren or being beaten by ocean waves. But usually I am not willing to say anything, because I know they've spent their life being shut down and told they're too loud, and not hurting them is more important than not being fried to a crisp by the noises they're making.

(Don't worry, there are other situations where it's the opposite situation, where they ignore their needs because they're afraid to hurt me -- I am not complaining about Ivy, keep reading.)

It's just all very very unnecessary! and can be solved pretty simply, by realizing that 7-year-olds aren't fucking with you on purpose. Just to... make you mad at them? Think about that for one second and realize how wrong-footed it is.

In fact, maybe if a kid gets loud when they're excited about dinosaurs, and quiet when they're nervous about public speaking, that's not even that weird??

(Maybe it's even a part of your job to help them become more confident about public speaking, rather than shaming them for being bad at a new skill? Nay, nay, that's probably taking it a step too far. right? lol. lmao.)

Regarding Entrapta and Autism

Howdy!  Merry Holidays, locks and tumblrs.  Winter is coming soon!  Everyone excited about that?  No?  Really?  Just me?  Aww, well alright.  I ain’t your dad.

Another short one this week.  Didn’t plan on writing anything, but then, I never really do.  Got into an Entrapdak sorta mood, and scoured the internet for stuff relating to the ship, and I happened upon a post... somewhere (My memory isn’t great, and I’m in more places for this fandom than I’d care to admit)... that stuck with me.  The post alleged that Entrapta couldn’t be autistic, because if she were, she would have to be high-functioning autistic, and high functioning autistic adults don’t behave like she does.

Now, I’m not gonna sit here and pretend that this is a perspective that’s particularly widespread or popular around these parts... indeed, the post that made the claim was the first time I’d ever heard it... and was quite possibly a deliberate troll.  I couldn’t even find it again when I searched for it to do this post.  I planned to ignore it... but it’s a viewpoint that just wouldn’t stop nagging me, y’know?  After a few days I decided I had to go ahead and disagree with it, just for my own peace of mind.  Well, this is my blog, after all! So I reckon I’mma do that now.  Read on if ya want... or don’t... you know the drill by now.  

So, like, I feel the best way to start is to break the statement down into its component parts.

1.) Entrapta would have to have a high-functioning variation of autism.

2.) Adults with such disorders don’t behave like she does [with the implicit modifier of ‘in the real world’]

3.) Because 1 and 2 are incompatible, Entrapta isn’t autistic

I don’t feel like statement 1 can really be contested.  “High Functioning Autism” is more of a colloquial category than a medical diagnosis, but even in that capacity it’s only meaning is “person who has symptoms of autism, but no intellectual impairment”... Given her status as Etheria’s smartest woman, we can safely assume that Entrapta has no intellectual impairments, so indeed, if we are to assume she’s autistic, we would have to assume she was high-functioning.  

Statement 2 is where the argument falls apart, because it makes the same assumption that a lot of flawed character takes about SPOP peeps make: that characters in a fantasy setting can be compared 1:1 to people who live normal lives in real society.  

With regard to the assumption that High-functioning homies in the real world don’t behave like Entrapta... well, first of all I wonder how many such people this person has ever interacted with in a more personal setting... because I know quite a few who do... but second of all I do see what they mean in everyday social interactions.

Autistic =/= stupid, and by the time they reach adulthood, many people on the spectrum, either thanks to having a good support network or simply years to engage in trial and error, do get the hang of ritualistic social interactions.  Autism entails a lack of ability to intuit appropriate responses/behaviors in social situations, but with enough study of the same interaction multiple times, it gradually becomes less a question of intuition and more a question of analyzing data, which is considerably easier to do.  With enough time, support, and dedication, an adult on the spectrum can navigate social situations independently... maybe even find success in customer service jobs, provided said customer interactions are highly-ritualized, tend to follow a predictable series of conversation branches, and there’s a supervisor/manager nearby to take over if a customer breaks the script for some reason.  

So yeah... in public, you don’t see many adults who would be considered high-functioning and on the spectrum behave like Entrapta does... but, like, do you see what those adults you’re comparing her to have... that she clearly didn’t?  The support of understanding adults who patiently guided them as children, and time to practice social interactions in a safe environment.

Entrapta, if pictures are to be believed, was raised by robots.  Robots she probably designed herself... and thus which probably aren’t any more socially capable than she is.  The small number of humans she interacts with are: a.) Subservient to her, due to the caste system of their society

and

b.) kinda... super, duuuper intimidated by her small army of robots... perhaps correctly so, as it would turn out, but still. People on the spectrum don’t magically get better at social interaction because they age... it’s not like hair growing or vocal pitch shifting... it’s the result of patient work and the opportunity to develop.  Entrapta had neither, so obviously, in spite of her age, she’s not nearly as socially developed as a woman her age would probably be had she been born into the real world.

...Also, she’s ADHD-coded, too... so that doesn’t help her much.  

And so we reach the end of another one of my things I sometimes write.  This one had less point than even my other things I sometimes write, but I had to write it, so here it is.  Look, I’m *not* an expert on autism, I get that, and if I have something factually wrong, I encourage anyone to correct me.  My one claim to any amount of understanding about autism is the relatively unremarkable happenstance of living with it for a few decades.  I’m not saying that denying Entrapta is autistic-coded is inherently wrong... though that’s a character interpretation I can’t personally say I agree with...  just that this argument, specificially, doesn’t jive with me. 

Soo... hey!  If you’re gonna drink a hot beverage, make sure it has some peppermint flavoring in it... unless you’re allergic to peppermint, ‘cuz then that would probably be bad... otherwise do it!  It’s December!  December and Peppermint go hand in hand, right?  No? Really?  Just me?  Aww, well alright. I ain’t your dad.
