WHAT YOU TALK TO PRESENT TO MOVE TO DIE

A lot of what we try to do in the application process is to weed out the people who are rich enough not to work do anyway. People who do good work often think that whatever they're working on is no good answer. Idealistic undergraduates find their unconsciously preserved child's model of wealth confirmed by eminent writers of the past. Doing something simple at first glance usually never were when you really looked at it. The idea that we're the center of things is difficult to discard. Pick 30 startups that eminent angels have recently invested in, give them each a million dollars each to move, a lot of people probably thought we'd have some working system for micropayments by now. It would have been a junior professor at that age, and he couldn't afford anything more.1

In retrospect, it would arguably be immoral not to. You'd seem a barbarian if you behaved that way today. This is generally true even if competitors get lots of attention. And even more, you need a certain activation energy to start a startup, you get to pick the startups.2 Common Lisp falls short. Historically there have always been certain towns that were centers for certain industries, and if they take it, they'll take it on their terms. Proving your initial plan was mistaken would just get you a bad grade. A mean person can't convince the best people have other options. This is especially true in fields where the rules change. The best place to work, there was no point in making more than you could steal it.3 That's what board control means in practice. This won't work for all startups, but philosophically they're at the opposite end of the humanities.

If we could answer that question it would be a better word. Up till about 1400, China was richer and more technologically advanced than Europe. If Lenin walked around the offices of a company like Apple and think, how could I ever make such a thing? Another view is that a programming language rather than, say, an exercise in denotational semantics or compiler design if and only if hackers like it. They lived in houses full of servants, wore elaborately uncomfortable clothes, and travelled about in carriages drawn by teams of horses which themselves required their own houses and servants. Startups are so hard and emotional that the bonds and emotional and social support that come with friendship outweigh the extra output lost.4 The ones on startups get tested by about 70 people every 6 months. Rhythm Of War Liveblog Part One, Part 1 (Chapters 1-2)

On to Part One of Rhythm of War, after I finish screaming at the ghost of Gavilar Kholin. Actually, we can’t wait for that, I’m never going to be done screaming at the ghost of Gavilar Kholin.

Our POVs are Kaladin, Shallan, Navani, Venli, and Lirin--so Kal’s family is coming back to prominence, I guess. It’s a short update, but I gotta go to work.

Lirin talks about the ethics of continuing a hopeless fight, Syl lets loose an “I told you so” first thing, we see a new and terrifying variant of Fused, I come up with a new, more accurate name for the Sons of Honor; Veil finally gets kidnapped; I start getting philosophical about the ethics of continuing a hopeless fight; and Kaladin organizes an airlift.

Epigraphs for this part seem to be a lecture that Navani gave on how to trap spren in fabrials, so that’s cool.

Alright, so our timing here is a year after the fall of Alethkar, and Herdaz has been next on the Voidbringers’ target list. They’ve been fighting the entire time, but the voidbringers have intensified their assault and now refugees are pouring into the villages in Alethkar; Lirin is insisting on examining everyone as they come in, making sure that he can find people who need treatment early. The leader of Hearthstone now is Brightness Abiajan--from the name, I’m assuming she’s one of the singers.

Also, apparently someone is coming through this line today that Lirin is anxious about. Abiajan comes to talk to Lirin, wondering if he has no compassion because he’s so numb to others’ suffering--he explains that he has to numb it to survive as a surgeon. She mentions that he set her arm, once, when she was a child. Also, hilariously, Abiajan says that plaguespren cause plague and that the idea that it’s improper sanitation is superstition.

Laral, Kaladin’s childhood friend, is helping out now, determined. Apparently the person that Lirin is worried about is a Herdazian general; Lirin does see him as responsible for much of the current strife for continuing to fight; however, he’s not going to turn him in, and instead has contacted Kaladin to come pick him up while Laral helps Roshone make a distraction.

Lirin’s condemnation of continuing a hopeless war as something that just gets people killed and is stupid (”Heroism is a myth you tell idealistic young people. It got one of my sons killed and another taken from me”) makes sense and is deeply sad. It’s also a good second perspective on the fact that so much of Roshar’s narrative has been about being forced to choose between two bad options and having the resolve to find another path or stick with the honorable thing--Lirin here is a reminder that that’s not always an option and sometimes makes things worse. “I obey the person who holds the sword to my neck, General, same as I always have.”

Heroism isn’t always an option. Heroism can get you killed and hurt the people around you. You have to be willing to take responsibility for that in order to try heroism, and that’s some of what Kaladin has had to struggle with, too--the fact that he can’t protect everyone and that his actions will lead to death sometimes.

Also, shoutout to Roshone for actually making a distraction here, good on you buddy. Anyway Lirin noticed that the parshmen always focus on what appears to be the person being seen to rather than, say, the people carrying the litter--probably because they’re used to the people doing those menial tasks being unnoticed and unspoken to, and have absorbed that norm of society? I don’t know, but Lirin is exploiting it.

Oh man, someone has visited Hearthstone, someone who Abiajan refers to as having blessed them, and she demands that Lirin come with her and that nobody leave the town. It’s one of the Fused, and it’s interrogating people about Kaladin--and they noticed that Kaladin was there, and Lirin notes that he barely recognizes Kaladin anymore, referring to him as the “harsh man Kaladin had become.”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, just let Kaladin babysit people this book, let him rest, he deserves it. I mean, what’s happening is him having to fight again, but he deserves rest.

Cut to Kaladin’s perspective, Syl is delivering an “I told you so” about them being spotted, which is so relentlessly on-brand. Kaladin notes that he’s not looking at Lirin to avoid giving Lirin away, and also because “he knew what he would see. disappointment. So, nothing new.”

HEY. SOMEONE LOVE AND APPRECIATE KALADIN STORMBLESSED PLEASE HE’S DOING HIS BEST.

Meanwhile, Kaladin is learning the different “orders” of Fused; he’s mostly dealt with the shanay-im, “those of the heavens,” who share the flight of windrunners. Apparently Jasnah posited there would be ten orders, logically, and Dalinar--offering no explanation for how he knew--said it would only be nine. I mean, at this point if anyone knows Odium it’s Dalinar.

Also, this Fused has learned not to do single combat, which is Kaladin’s normal mode of dealing with them. I wonder if the order they’re modelled after affects their behavior--honorspren create windrunners, and agreeing to a one-on-one duel is a very honorable thing to do. Maybe there’s more connection there than either side wants to realize.

Ok, so what we know about this new Fused:

Teleports via shooting their spren forward, then forming a new body of voidlight and stone where they end up.

Probably elsecaller-linked (teleportation and then forming things out of energy)

Favors exploiting teleportation to allow for a grappling fighting style and sneaking into blind spots extremely quickly (big rogue energy)

Teleportation ability is extremely costly, can only be done three times before needing to recharge on Voidlight.

Does not teleport instantaneously; the spren-travel can be outrun, as Kaladin does by lashing himself forward five times (so, approximately five times the speed of gravity on Roshar, which is not gravity’s speed on earth, is faster than them; they’re considerably slower than light, even though that’s what they look like)

Can’t transport objects/make them from voidlight; clothing is a hair wrap and weapons are fragments of their skin

He leaves but tells Kaladin to watch for him; it also seems like Kaladin’s depression is coming back. Syl shows up to talk to him, wearing a different style--she’s been taking fashion notes from Adolin, which is hilarious.

Meanwhile, Veil is wandering around the Sadeas warcamps, irritated that she hasn’t been kidnapped yet, or even mugged. Also, Veil and Shallan are apparently teaching Radiant to appreciate humor, which is great. Adolin and his soldiers are apparently backing her up for this hopeful kidnapping, which is reassuring--I’m glad she’s not going it alone, although she’s very competent. She’s pretending to be a merchant who has a way in past Dalinar’s tariffs and is also implying he doesn’t have the authority to demand them.

Ooh, specifically Shallan is hunting the Hypocrite’s Association, which is what I’m calling the Sons of Honor for the moment I guess. For a moment, while they’re doing accounting, Shallan starts having a bit of a memory come back; Veil suggests it might be time to remember everything, but Shallan shuts that down.

Apparently, in the grand tradition of Sadeases not knowing when they’re beaten, Ialai is plotting treason. Ialai, how did that go for the last two Brightlords Sadeas? I’m begging you, quit while you’re...behind, honestly. But still alive. Anyway, the wine was drugged--finally--so they have officially been kidnapped!

Back to Kaladin, Syl is trying to convince him that it’s easy to sleep, he just has to lie down and pretend to be dead for a few hours (oh, Syl, honey, you’re trying to help but that’s not...that’s not it) but Kaladin is noting that it feels like life is strangely disconnected for him, like it keeps going for everyone else and he’s in stasis.

Chronic depression is a bitch.

Syl cheers him up by doing a terrible Kaladin impression, though. I love her. Kaladin goes back to talk to the singers, telling them that there’s a shelter half an hour to the east and telling them not to fight if they don’t want to die. They, of course, fight, which Kaladin doesn’t like; it’s very Alethi of them, though, to throw themselves forward.

Again, we’re back to whether or not there’s heroism in fighting a fight you can’t win. Even with Ialai, kind of--continuing to fight against Dalinar when she can’t win it. Hopeless fights are all well and good when your protagonists do them and it works, this part seems to be pointing out, but what if they fail? And how does it feel to be on the other side of them?

Anyway, the others retreat, and Kaladin gets to meet with his mom and baby Oroden (who pronounces his name as “Gagadin;” i’m gonna CRY). Syl always appears to Kal’s family. Also, apparently Kaladin was dating Lyn, which is wild because I’m almost positive based on her appearance last book that she’s gay as fuck, and she broke up with him. Also, Syl and Hesina are ganging up on Kaladin and it’s great.

"It’s demonstrably unfair that I have to deal with both of you at once,” Kaladin said.

Meanwhile it also turns out that the Radiants haven’t been supporting Herdaz because they saw it falling as inevitable, but it’s continued fighting against all odds. Another perspective: is it alright to abandon others fighting a fight that you assume is impossible, when it could be winnable with your strength?

Also, apparently the Mink likes to sneak away from his guards without letting them notice, and he’s done it again here. That’s pretty impressive, I’ve got to say, although Kaladin is aghast at the idea of leaving one’s men behind like that (of course).

Also, Kaladin organized one of Navani’s platforms to essentially airlift out all of Hearthstone. Trying to save as many people as he can, even still.

Hi Greg, I was wondering what is your fun takes on she-ra and the princesses of power that you mentioned in the "how it's been" personal time. what are your thoughts the characters and story? I always love your sense of humour and interpretations.

Since it’s been a while since I watched the show, there’s two main things I really enjoyed.

1. The Horde is more chickenshit than something from the Venture Bros.

Now, it’s not something they intentionally highlight, but the Horde has no structure, no rules, and no goals. On the very first episode, we’re introduced to Adora Belle, who wants to fight the good fight for her country, the Fright Zone, but has absolutely no idea what the Horde even does. She thinks they battle a group of princesses, but we find out later the princesses got discouraged and disbanded years ago.

At first you might think that this is a 1984 situation where lies are truth and the Horde controls all information, but it actually turns out the Horde is just insanely disorganized. There’s no way to transmit information to anyone. Their military has four ranks: private, force commander, Shadow Weaver, and Hordak. Force commanders are almost completely autonomous, which is essential because they have no way to relay information up the chain of command. Even when a force commander wants Hordak to know something, Hordak has to use an evil winged baby to spy on the situation from the ceiling. This obscene lack of communication is a major plot point, where Shadow Weaver is stunned that Hordak knew something she didn’t tell him.

Hordak only has the one evil baby, for that matter, so the odds of him ever knowing what’s going on in time to act are so close to zero that the man may as well not exist. But that’s not to say Shadow Weaver controls everything, because she treats managing the Horde as a babysitting job she didn’t ask for, instead devoting her time to dry-humping an ominous red crystal all day. She gives all the appearances of a junkie, and what about this possessed Hordak to put that woman in charge of his entire military is never explained. From the fact that he never gets out of his chair, I assume he was too lazy to look for other candidates.

Even when Shadow Weaver was giving commands, even to people she saw practically every day, it seems that obeying orders is fully optional. Adora gets promoted to force commander at the outset of the story, only to immediately turn around and steal an aircraft for a joyride. And as for basic training? Show up whenever you want! Or not at all. Nobody cares. Katra arrives at the last two minutes of their training program and gets full credit for participating - there’s no punishment nor reprimand. The Horde’s soldiers are so unable to follow directions that Shadow Weaver practically explains she’s promoting Adora just because she has a better track record for obedience than anyone else - and again, Adora is the person who uses her first day of authority to steal what I can only assume must be a million dollar piece of military hardware, then crashes it.

Not that the training program is worth attending in the first place. Boot camp in the Horde consists of assembling an anti-social blob of whoever showed up that day, then telling them to run through an obstacle course of paralyzing lasers. The objective of the training is to push a big robot into a hole. That’s it. That’s the whole program. They have shields but aren’t really taught to use them as a unit, because the group basically scatters in all directions. The only time they act as a unified front is to heckle their squad-mate, Kyle, for getting hit mid training and diminishing their battle readiness by another 20%.

They stand in a circle around him as lasers rain down around them, each taking turns to tell Kyle he sucks and to high-five each other for not being Kyle. Of course the idiots get what they deserve, and over the span of their dumping on him they’re surrounded by paralyzing laser bots. Not a single higher-up takes the time to tell the group what they did wrong. This program is so monumentally terrible that at one point later in the series, Kyle is nearly shot through the heart with an arrow, and it occurred to me his jackass squad would only stand around him calling him names until his entire bloodstream emptied on to the deck of their ship, because that’s all they were trained to do.

2. There’s nobody on the planet, and everyone is gay

There’s a bit of miraculous combined hilarity that you can pull from the show’s low budget and progressive bent. First of all, She-Ra is a show where it’s probably safer to assume everyone is gay until proven otherwise. Our female lead characters spend most of the show traveling with a half-naked boy named Bo in the background, and the greatest interest he ever shows in anyone is when the camp gay sea captain shows up. There’s plenty of sexual tension between Adora and Katra, but characters of the opposite gender operate on purely professional terms at all times.

The show also can’t afford to animate large groups of people, which makes the whole world feel super tiny. The most populated scenes in the show are from the “Princess Ball”, which is presumably attended only by princesses and their lesbian plus ones (or in Glimmer’s case, her gay friend Bo). This makes it feel like the princesses are trying to assemble a team not because the resources of a nation will help them fight those of the Horde, but because if they have, like, six more guys then the armies are approximately the same size.

The low populations aren’t merely incidental. The show sometimes highlights it, writing it directly into the script that a nation is composed of a princess and her one guard, or that a princess lords over her three servants and nobody else. Reading between the lines, it creates a pretty bizarre situation for Eternia. Especially because it seems that Eternia is isolated in some pocket dimension as part of an as yet unrevealed twist.

It seems Eternia has been isolated for so long that the details are a matter of legend, lost to memory and history. But why are there so few people, and why is everyone gay? At one point a female character named Perfuma attempts to have a date with Bo, only to be ignored to such a degree that she gives up and pretty much writes off Bo entirely. Another female character, Mermista, occasionally agrees to date an obviously gay man named Sea Hawk, who wants to marry Mermista so he can obtain the title “King of the Sea”, but it sounds like any time they get close to being romantic Sea Hawk sets something on fire and makes a run for it.

All in all, it felt really bleak to me. For all they talk about wanting to save Eternia, there’s not much Eternia to save, and I’m not sure if there’s enough population left to be sustainable anyway. Especially when most of the couples aren’t exactly equipped to produce offspring.

So is it good?

At the end of the day, the real main character of the show is Katra. She’s the only character who develops. Adora starts off as a wide-eyed idealist with a bent towards justice, and she ends the first season as the exact same person. Katra, meanwhile, starts as a clingy girlfriend obsessed with Adora, but grows into an independent leader with a big lobster lover. It hits some solid notes there, but nothing amazing. It’ll at least keep you going.

But there’s also plenty of plot holes. I didn’t get very attached to the good guys of the story. I found Glimmer to be fairly annoying most of the time, and I felt the closest kinship to Entrapta because as a character, she didn’t seem to be taking any of the main conflict seriously, and as a viewer, neither was I.

It’s not amazing, but it’s not terrible, and in reality any political controversy you’ve heard about the show is a load of redundant hogwash repeated by people who already know their ideological script by heart.

Video Game Review: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Enhanced Edition (CD Projekt Red, 2011)

Genres: action RPG, fantasy

Premise: Geralt of Rivia is back and finds himself framed for the murder of the king of Temeria. While trying to track down the real assassin and clear his name, he is once again caught up in the conflict between humans and non-humans, as well as a revolt against the king of Kaedwen.

Platform Played On: PC (Windows)

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

I am evaluating this game based on four key aspects: story, characters, gameplay, and visuals.

Story: This Witcher game is a lot less focused on monster slaying than the previous installment. I fought more humans and humanoid races than straight up monsters, probably because the plot was more political. It was still an enjoyable story and had that trademark plethora of grey moral choices you would expect of a Witcher game. Like last time, I found the main plot (trying to track down the assassin) a lot less interesting than the other elements, but everything tied together well.

What I didn’t quite like, however, was the way racism was portrayed - it seemed like the game was trying to make a “both sides” argument to assist with the grey morality, but it ultimately ended up making a lot of the racism feel justified (according to the game’s logic, not my personal reaction).

Thankfully, the sex and romance was scaled way back, so that I found it easy to remain loyal to one love interest. There was, however, a notable increase in sexist language. Characters would comment on women’s appearances or stereotype their behavior in really annoying ways. There were also some side comments about lesbian affection being something to gawk at. Take these things out, and I think I would have enjoyed The Witcher 2 more.

Characters: Geralt seemed to have a bit more personality this time around, but he is still the same archetype - hard-drinking, womanizing, blustering power fantasy (depending, again, on how you play him). It was easier, however, to play a noble Geralt, so I ended up liking him a bit more because of that.

Triss was back for this installment, but I ended up liking her a bit less. She seemed to exist just to be captured, and whenever she did magic, it always seemed to be too much for her to handle.

The greatest character additions were Vernon Roche (captain of the Temerian special forces), Iorveth (an elven leader of the resistance), Philippa Eilhart (a sorceress), and Saskia (a warrior maiden). Roche and Iorveth had very compelling personalities, even though I didn’t end up liking them 100% of the time. Roche seemed quite amiable with Geralt, which I appreciated, though he was very prejudiced against non-humans. Iorveth was very forceful and idealistic, though he pursues his goals without much regard for lives lost along the way. Both seemed like characters I wanted to get to know more, and their presence in the story made choosing between alliances difficult in a satisfying way. Saskia, though she wasn’t around as much as I would have liked, was intriguing for me just because she was a warrior woman who had genuine love for her people and their well-being. Phillippa was interesting because she had complex and somewhat selfish motivations - she was a character I loved to watch and, sometimes, love to hate.

Gameplay: Players have many of the same options as the first Witcher game (such as alchemy and fighting styles), but the second game allows them to throw ranged weapons (such as daggers) and craft/lay traps or bombs. Players can also craft and upgrade armor, and part of me got a lot of satisfaction from customizing the material and look of my various protective gear. What annoyed me, however, was that I wasn’t allowed to set my own keybindings on PC, and the defaults weren’t always intuitive.

Fast travel still isn’t much of an option, though getting from place to place is a little more efficient (something like hubs are in effect). I found some of the maps to be a bit confusing, especially the forest, where I go turned around a lot.

There are moments when the sheer amount of mechanics overwhelm the play experience. I had absolutely no idea how to navigate abilities, potions, weapons, mutagens, crafting, and role-playing all at once, and I’d often forget I had options.

Visuals: Players will notice a difference in the visuals between the first game and the second. NPC designs are less repetitive, and the armor is a lot more intricate and visually interesting (more textures, colors, etc). The landscapes are also well-rendered, and monster designs are full of textures and shapes that made my eyes want to keep looking at them. Something about Geralt’s magic also seemed to pop a bit more, and the timers for the duration of potions at the top of the screen was very helpful. I also found Geralt’s motions during combat more fluid and fun to watch.

This game also contains flashbacks, which are 2D animated so that they stand out from the rest of the game. They have something of a storyboard look, with some elements of a motion comic, and I found them stylistically pleasing.

I didn’t write about this for my review of The Witcher, but I noticed in this game that all the characters were exclusively white (unless I missed someone). It bothered me a lot, since it wouldn’t have been hard to create some diversity within human populations.

In-Game Triggers: violence, body horror, presence of corpses/blood in the environment, sex and nudity (way more explicit than The Witcher), racism, drug use

Recommendations: Like with the first Witcher, I would recommend this game if you like RPGs and fantasy settings, especially RPGs with many morally grey choices. I wouldn’t recommend this game to those who are bothered by antifeminist depictions of women, or who may be turned off by the “both sides” argument of the game’s racial politics.

MBTI® Of Neverending Story Characters | ScreenRant

While the beloved 1984 fantasy film The Neverending Story might seem too trippy for an MBTI® analysis, the beautiful fight for imagination and wonder is actually filled with some pretty distinctive Myers–Briggs Type Indicator examples. Some characters present prime examples of heroism and bravery while others are masters of science or compassion, and it's easy to see where they fall among the personality types.

As introspective as some of these beloved characters may be, we doubt they have taken the MBTI® test, so we took it for them to find out which personalities each man, child and Rockbiter might fall have.

10 Bastian Bux: INFP

Sensitive young Bastian is every bit the introvert who would rather curl up with a good book than go off on a real, live adventure. He still likes to help people, though, and as an INFP, or the Mediator, he has the imagination to dream up solutions even if he doesn't have the confidence to plan or present them all the time. That's why he had the Childlike Empress's name chosen for her long before he called it out.

Bastian is idealistic and always wants peace, which is why he'd rather avoid conflict rather than address it. Like his father says, he's not a very practical kid, and we witness that at the beginning of the movie when he avoids a math test by hiding in the school attic.

9 Rockbiter: ESFP

The Neverending Story is filled with introverts, which is probably why it speaks so well to so many of them, but there are a few extroverts. The Rockbiter is a prime example. This kind-hearted, sociable fellow is an ESFP, the Entertainer, who loves to tell stories and be the center of attention. If he met up with his camp friends under better circumstances, he'd surely wow them with his funny tales.

Long before you know it, the sadness of being delayed has now disappeared. Looking back at it, maybe the idea of being delayed wasn’t that bad after all.

Anyway, for the past few weeks, you’ve been browsing ateneo’s graduate programs. You’re struggling if you should pursue medicine, or work after graduation and pursue taking masters. You want to study medicine because it has been your lifelong dream. Remember why you chose psychology in the first place? Oh, I forgot to mention, you’ve been rethinking your decision to stay in the Philippines. You wanted to work in the Philippines and help it a much better place, but you know it yourself that you won’t be able to fulfill your dreams if you stay in here. Unless, you have a high paying job. You wanted to move in Canada, but you’re heart is still not decided. Well, lets see after a couple of years.

And hey, you also decided that your lifelong goal will revolve around on being always happy, traveling the world, and helping the oppressed.
