summary: being an older sibling is tiring, and sometimes all you need is some of the comfort you give.

warnings: general family pain, a bit of gaslighting (?) idk abt that one

a/n: im not feeling the best rn bc #oldersiblingissues! except that the older sibling is me and im the one whos having issues. am i procrastinating on homework because i need to satiate my hunger for big sibling fics? maybe. shh. i need it and so do my other older sibling people. i gotchu <3 its so so so hard. and yes this is a vent fic

"go away! i hate you, you're not mom!" your younger brother yelled bitterly. you irritating, stuck up brat, you thought.

"i'm not mom! that's why i care about you like this!" you grew increasingly frustrated. all this over a curfew, seriously? dude, all you said was to come back by 10. that was hella gracious already! when you were his age, your curfew was 5pm sharp. anything later and you could say goodbye to that phone your parents so kindly let you have.

sighing in frustration, you closed the door gently, lest you alert your mother that you were in a mood – no, no; that wouldn't do. no door slamming from you, no showing any signs of displeasure or disappointment towards anyone unless you wanted someone to reprimand you for "scaring your younger siblings" and "taking out your anger on people who love you and don't deserve this".

it's been like that for years. 

always being resented by your gaggle of siblings for not being that fun, wild-spirited older sibling that they always saw in the movies.

always getting scolded by your parents for not keeping your siblings in check when in reality, they refused to listen to you.

always needing to pick yourself up with the world came crashing down on your shoulders and there was no one to comfort you when you cried.

no crying in front of your siblings unless you wanted to be teased and judged for being weak when you were supposed to be the glue of the family.

always needing to be the family therapist – parents included, but mostly the receiving side of your care.

years of this. you were sick of it to say the least – anyone would be. years of constantly feeling invalidated and of your feelings put lower than your younger siblings would do that to anyone. i take care of everyone, you thought upsettingly. when will someone take care of me? 

you wanted someone to be able to sit down with you – to talk you through the days when everything felt like too much and you were balancing the emotions of everyone in your household.

you wanted someone whom you could make mistakes with freely. you wanted someone to comfort you, tell you when to stop, when to push, when to apologise. enough about all that bullshit from your end, you wanted to hear it from someone who cared for you unconditionally. not because of a title they held in their hand. someone who chose to stick by you so they could guide you.

those who you took care of in your life took you for granted, because they didn't know how much you wanted the same care you gave.

resent me all you want. i'm just being the person i wish was there for me.

Hey! You're from a big family like me, haha! I've got three older sisters, a younger brother (he's one of my best friends), and two little sisters. I'm technically the middle child but I act like the oldest regarding my sibs bc my older sisters were all off to college by the time my brother was born. Do you have any family headcanons for the Paladins? (Like what sort of relationship they have/had with their family)

 I love my bigfamily. I only have one younger sibling, though :( Me and my brotherand my younger sister are known as ‘the babies,’ so that sucks.Anyway, here’s your headcanon!

  Shiro:

 -Probablythe oldest kid in his family.

 -I can lowkey imagine his mother having him at a very young age(teenager) so that makes Shiro very protective of her and the two ofthem are really close.

 -He’d be the type of son who would outgrow his mother when he was onlylike, fourteen years old.

  -Also the type of son to cancel plans with his friends so he can spendthe night in with his parents, even if they don’t want him to.

  -As for siblings, I can’t really imagine Shiro with any othersiblings. I feel like his mother and father would have one and justbe like – well, this little shit is perfect so there’s no need totry again.

 - And they’re right because Shiro is a doting son who would literallydie so his parents will be happy.

 -Wraps his armaround his mum’s shoulders to make her blush and get embarrassed inpublic.

 -“Justwait, mum. I’ll be tall one day and I’ll be able to protect you fromeveryone,” says little four year old Shiro.

   Keith:

 -Keith’sfamily isn’t very good, I don’t think.

  -Growing up, he always, alwayslookedup to his father since he was the only one really in Keith’s life hecould look up to. He had no idea who his mother was and he has nosiblings – so that just left him and his dad.

  -The two would be close to an extent. His dad would obviously neverlet anything hurt him, but as Keith grew older, his dad started toleave the house more and leave Keith on his own.

  -Keith never thought anything of it, but there were nights when hewanted nothing more than for his dad to come home and just comforthim.

  -Keith wouldn’t have any bad feelings towards his dad, I don’t think.Especially as he got into the teenage years. Of course, there wassome confusion as to why his dad wasn’t with him and there were somenights when he would be a little bit salty, but he would never hatehis dad for leaving.

  -Can you imagine preteen Keith writing letters to his dad and neversending them? Like, sitting at his desk at two in the morning writingdown how much he misses him and how he hopes he’s safe

  - But when his dad came home, him and Keith were close to bestfriends. They wouldn’t discuss work, wouldn’t discuss his fathersabsence, never discuss his mother – they just talked about randomthings and those were some of the happiest moments of Keith’s life.

   Lance:

 - FAMILYBOY.

  -We all knowthis guy is just – the famliest person in the world.

  -Middle child. He has both older and younger siblings, and quite a lotof them.

 - And they all act like him – childish, funny, loud. Some of themare even wilder than Lance, but he would never admit that to thePaladins.

 - His older siblings alwaysknewhow to put Lance in his place. Always. He would start insulting themand they’d just tell him to shut up and he’d quieten down.

 - BUT THEN HIS YOUNGER SIBLINGS.

 -He was so damn protective over them, but they could never fuck withhim. They would try to tell him to shut up and he’d be just like hisolder siblings – he wasn’t having it.

 - But in the end, they’re all really cute and really close and theyshare beds sometimes when it gets cold and they probably make eachother cups of tea when the others are ill and aw.

  -Ilove the McClain family.

   Hunk:

  -Whydo I see him being raised by his grandmother???

 -I know it’s probably wrong and probably weird, but I have this thingwith Hunk and his grandmother???

 - IDK, but it’s happening.

 - Of course he’s still in contact with his parents. He loves hisparents, but his parents work quite a lot and often just left Hunkoff at his grandmothers when they had nobody else to look after him.

  -Him and his grandmother would cook and bake most of the day and Hunkloves it.

 -Fuckvideo games. Hunk wants to cook with his grandmother and that’s theend of it.

  - Hunk would never be one to go out with his friends. Like Shiro, hewould much rather just stay in with his granny and do whatever.

 - Impromptu game ofScrabble.

 - Himand his grandmother always doing crosswords together and jokinglyarguing over the different words.

  -“Granny, doingleisn’ta word.”

  -“Hunk, whose house is this?”

   -BONUS: Hunk being there for every single one of her surgeries andrefusing to leave the hospital until it was confirmed that she wasokay.

  - BONUS #2: His grandmother always chasing off bullies with her canebecause, “That’s my boy you’re talking shit about!”

     Pidge:

  -Okay.Okay. Where do I begin?

  -THE DAMN GUNDERSON FAMILY IS JUST HSJFIOJFIPEJ.

  -Her and Matt always arguing in the house. Always. Like, every littlething sets them off.

  -Roasting each other non-stop.

  -But when somebody decides to mess with the other one????

  -Um???? No.

  -The two of them have both probably got in a large number of fightsjust because they want to protect their sibling.

 - AS FOR THEIR PARENTS.

 - I can see them as being the type of parents who just – don’t givea shit. They raised Pidge, for crying out loud.

  -“Mum, who’s your favourite child?”

  -“You’re both annoying as hell.”

 - But again, the love that this family shares for each other ??? It’sunbelievable.

 -Would literally die for each other.
