Born to two farmers in north Ohio, James always dreamed of being more. Amid the dust and toil, he imagined himself as someone dashing and debonair. While he pulled potatoes from the ground and felt the dirt under his fingernails he watched men ride by in their buggies, kicking up dirt. That was all James ever wanted: to lave the hunger and triviality in his past. And he knew he would do whatever it took to get to a sparkling city.
After twenty years on the farm, James was done waiting around for an opportunity to fall at his feet. He made his way into town one day, walking with his luggage in hand, and arrived just as church was being called into session. With perfect timing, skill, and a whole lot of heart he jumped into the nicest car, tossed his luggage into the back, and took it for a joyride. Except, unlike most joyrides, he tore out of town and did not look back.
James drove the car up to Detroit and was quick to sell it off to a mechanic. With that money he bought himself an apartment, some tools, and started a new life. His days were spent stealing cars and turning them into whatever mechanic or body shop would turn a blind eye. Some were taken for parts and some were resold. In fact, there was even a cadillac that James had the fortune of stealing and reselling twice.
Just around the time that the police were beginning to close in on James the war began. He took his leave and flew as a fighter ace for the duration of the war. He left with few special badges of commendation and no gain in wealth but he considered himself lucky to still have his life. He’d also adopted a skill for forgery, and began to sign checks for small amounts of funding from military generals. It was always just enough to go unnoticed, but over time he accumulated enough money to buy an apartment in New York.
1920 is when James finally made it big. When prohibition was instated James used his criminal connections from Detroit to secure a spot in the illegal import and trade of alcohol. He was the mastermind: importing, making connections, and stocking speakeasies. Most of the alcohol of the New York underground passed through James’ hands. In 1923 he moved to West Egg in small mansion, which just so happened to be next door to one of his biggest buyers: Ross Shelby.
James often visited the large parties and enjoyed his nights there. He would gamble, drink, and make friends with whoever seemed interested in his trade. He was never a particularly secretive man, but he was smart even if gallant. With his quick wit, charm, and bold demeanor he was a magnet to all and was widely regarded as popular. But when the parties ended he would slink back to his house alone and hope that his business could keep him distracted from that call to something more which was still not satisfied.
