It’s day 5 of the #spinthroughspringchallenge by @talesofvinyl: Lengthening Days - A Really Long Album, Or One That Feels Long To You. Hans Knappertsbusch and the Bayreuther Festspiele - Richard Wagner: Parsifal (Philips, 1962/7?) Four hours and 15 minutes of pure beauty, Wagner’s last opera is an incredible excursion into religious and Arthurian themes. Conceived as something more than an entertainment, for over 20 years after its 1882 debut it was performed nowhere else than at Bayreuth, Wagner’s custom-built concert hall. The Met Opera broke the prohibition in 1903 and I was able to see it there about 90 years later, with Placido Domingo. A sublime experience. As for this vinyl copy, I’m frankly unsure why I even have it since CDs are far more ideal a medium to listen to a work of this length and I have five performances on CD, including this one! Streaming might be even better considering there are even fewer interruptions, but you don’t get the libretto and other texts they include with a physical release. Barry White - Stone Gon’ (20th Century, 1973) When your love is unlimited (see what I did there? 😁), you don’t need music to get in the mood. But if you need a little sonic assistance Barry White is the man! He was also a genius assembler of the groove (with help from arranger Gene Page). Undisputed Truth - Law Of The Land (Gordy, 1973) The title track is an *undisputed* classic of psych-funk Motown. The rest is a mixed bag of covers, none of which better the originals. It’s day 28 of the #spinthroughspringchallenge by @talesofvinyl: Holidays - Where Would You Like To Go On Vacation Right Now? Oscar Peterson - Live In Paris 1962 (Return To Analog, 2018) We’re not really traveling much beyond drivable range right now, for reasons both obvious and less so. But, sure, I wouldn’t mind going to Paris! We haven’t been there since our honeymoon in 1988 - and we had a wonderful time. We went to the Louvre, the Pompidou, the Rodin and Oicasso museums, L’Orangerie to see the Monets, Versailles and Chantilly, and just ate and walked and enjoyed the city. Musically speaking, while we didn’t hear any jazz, we did get to see a friend sing in the chorus for a ripping performance of Beethoven’s Ninth. As for this record, it’s a typically gorgeous presentation by RTA of a lovely concert by Peterson and his stalwart companions, Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. I got to see Peterson play a solo gig at a Barnes & Noble in Greenwich Village and he evidenced the same quietly dazzling style he shows here. It’s day 26 of the #spinthroughspringchallenge by @talesofvinyl: Singing In The Rain - An Album You Looked Forward To That Let You Down. Lou Reed - Mistrial (RCA, 1986) After The Blue Mask, Legendary Hearts, and New Sensations was there any question I would buy the next Lou Reed album as soon as it came out? Certainly not…but I wish I had a chance to preview this one as it is largely a turkey. Calling it “Misfire” would not have been inaccurate. My analysis at the time was that Lou and bass-player/co-producer Fernando Saunders had become too insular, they needed more outside input, or at least someone to say, “The Original Wrapper? Really?” But apparently no one could speak truth to Lou’s power. His guitar always sounds great, I will say that. So, I was super happy last year when this near-mint promo copy fell into my hands at @berkshirecat1 for $8. I already had With Everything I Feel In Me so there’s just three more to find. Jonathan Wilson - Rare Blur (Bella Union, 2020) Jenny O. - Peace & Information (Holy Trinity, 2017 Father John Misty - Pure Comedy (Sub Pop, 2017) Jonathan Wilson not only plays multiple instruments and has released several albums of sonically rich, emotionally resonant songwriting, he’s also a genius producer who has had a hand in some of the finest albums of our time, such as the Jenny O. and Father John Misty albums pictured here. Did I mention that he also played on and helped record Roger Waters’ last album and plays lead and rhythm guitar and sings the David Gilmour parts for him on tour? I saw it a few years ago and it was a jaw-dropping collision of old and new. Bill Nelson’s Red Noise - Sound On Sound (Harvest, 1979) You asked for a recommendation for your birthday and considering your love of Placebo, I figured you wouldn’t be adverse to something a little arty, but with some crunchy guitars, and a distinctive voice. So, here we have the transition from the dying embers of Be Bop Deluxe, Nelson’s art-glam-prog band, to his next iteration as a sleek new waver. Combining elements of punk, new wave, art, prog, and synth rock, this one-off could also be defined by one word: FUN.
