Roy from Ted Lasso dropping more truth bombs in Season 2. In this instance he’s referring to relationships, but this sentiment can apply to many things in life including publishing. I’ve been pretty open about my experiences in publishing over the years. Some things have been good. Others pretty bad. But I had something that really set me off course earlier this year. Back to back I had two crushing things happen. At first, I worried this was the universe telling me that I needed to take a step back and reassess my writing life. One of these things broke me down because it made me feel like my writing wasn’t worthy of recognition or financial support. It’s hard to see a relationship through one lens and then, like whiplash, that rug is pulled out from under you. You’re forced to realize that perhaps that support & belief in your work was never quite real at all. It’s a gut-wrenching realization, but now with time and space between that event and me, I’ve realized that walking away was the best choice for me and my career. I’ve learned that you have to put value to your work. If people don’t see that value, then you have to move on. Work with others. Write something new.
