Hahahaha at first I was like, c’mon, Greg, we’ve know this for ages, you guys have seriously gotta start coordinating your dramatic reveals so they pay off properly. And then I was like oh shit, they invaded Earth first.

The messy imperfection of Greg screaming that he needs Steven and that’s why he shouldn’t go back, goddd. Everyone just needs a blanket and a hug right now. There’s Steven, worried he’ll never be able to forgive himself if the Gems die and he could have saved them, and literally everyone else working so hard to try and make sure that’s exactly what happens because they’re all guilt-ridden messes.

NO. TERRIBLE. You can’t just lecture us on the Gem’s tragic backstory and then immediately start dropping hints about your own, Greg. I’m going to sue this episode for emotional damages.

Why is everything in this episode both hilariously and soul-shatteringly painful.

Jasper headbutted this tiny child so hard she broke the end credits song, I can’t believe the depths of her depravity.
Well. That certainly was an episode. We learned a lot, we loved a lot, we stopped paying attention to foreshadowing because it’s 2am and there were so many ladies on screen that we had to start prioritising what was truly important.

Those are some highly targeted insults you’re just throwing around there, lady. Jasper comes across as extremely performative - the dramatic sighs, the way she tears each Gem (even the ones on her side) a new one in a way calculated to describe exactly how they couldn’t ever measure up, the way her shoulders have more shoulders on top of them. Everyone around her is terrified of her, which is understandable since she’s so imposing and seems to take pleasure in being casually violent, but this has an element of theatre. She’s playing to her crowd. Which makes sense since she’s currently outnumbered by a lot of people with weapons who don’t like her very much. But even though she didn’t get the fight with Rose that she wanted, she’s clearly enjoying her control over this situation, maybe more than she would have actually enjoyed having to take on Rose.
She clearly isn’t some old enemy of theirs since she’s never met Rose, but she has heard of Rose and her gal pals, and has specific gripes against every single one of them.
The way she describes Pearl seems to allude to her fragility? She’s lost, which could refer to Pearl's emotional disorientation, but that would imply Jasper has some greater knowledge of Pearl’s personal situation? The way she describes her as ‘some’ Pearl makes ‘Pearl’ seem like a title more than a name. And Pearl has been very clearly signposted to have some fancy mannerisms and high class interests. I think Pearl might have been pretty important back home before she got caught up in her whirlwind romance with Rose and made an impulsive decision to join a war.
Amethyst is Pearl’s total insult opposite - she’s a runt, which could just be an insult about her height, but I think is pretty likely related to the reason Amethyst was alone in the kindergarten, and why our gems treat her like the ‘bad’ one despite Amethyst not really doing anything to earn their disdain. The perjorative ‘runt’ also carries implications of a ‘defect’, of something to be discarded, which would definitely explain the origins of some of Amethyst’s anxieties around being worthless garbage, beyond Pearl picking on her manners all the time.
And Garnet is a shameless display. Which, I don’t know about you guys, but that sounds very much like the kind of hate speech you’d throw at, say, a lesbian couple just trying to live their lives.

How did Steven get this image of the Mayor? I believe the only conceivable way you could get a picture of this man out of a suit and not looking campaign brochure ready is by breaking into his house and standing over him while he sleeps.

This is why Gems don’t let Greg come around. He just tells people the backstory without even omitting any crucial details, like some sort of guy who isn’t tormented by thousands of years of treason against their own people.

Steven might be a superpowered superemotional boy who’s about to smash up this van to get what he wants, but he was still raised with impeccable manners.

This is so sweet and heartfelt and I think Garnet means every word she’s saying because Steven has proven he can step up, he’s proven himself to the town several times now, and she’s asking him to be an integral part of saving a town that is clearly not considering why evacuation is the right choice for them.
But Garnet’s visor is green, so I am stubbornly choosing to interpret that as while she thinks she’s acting in his best interest, she’s really not. Steven is all tiny and vulnerable, and Garnet is his all-knowing, most sensible mom who is not only pulling the destiny card, but the ‘your mother would want this’ card! That’s such a low blow you might as well just sucker punch the kid into the van and be done with it!
He’s just still a child and they want to protect him and get him as far away from this as possible, she’s just doing it by pushing Steven’s buttons rather than insisting he leave for his own protection. And I don’t blame her, because what an awful situation to be in as a parent.

I can’t believe we’re actually learning information and contextualising what we know. What’s going on, why is this show that just telling us things instead of dripfeeding obscure flashbacks and portentious statements to us??

She unfused because AMETHYST WANTED HIM TO COME BACK AND SHE’S SO HAPPY TO SEE HIM ONE LAST TIME and Pearl is just panicked and despairing, and poor, poor Garnet never saw this coming.
