I was dreading the dinner for my brother’s engagement party. I was the youngest, and he had always been the family favorite, although the only person to actually admit it was our mother. 

So my parents were throwing him a party; family only along with a plus one. I hadn’t thought of a way to bring it up Hongjoong, Jules said just to skip it, but I couldn’t. My grandparents from both sides would be there, and if it wasn’t for the fact that my mom was going to be there I would be thrilled to go.

“If you don’t ask him, I’ll go with you,” Jules threatened, her eyeliner half done as she frowned at me.

I rolled my eyes and sat on my bed. I had told Jules about the argument and she almost went on a rampage.

I also knew she was right, I knew my family members weren’t like her. Her biological mom was the one who raised her, until she left and my grandpa had remarried.

Hongjoong had made sure I was truly fine before he left that day. He was like no one I had ever met; his voice was like the wind chimes that my great grandma loved to collect so much, and his laugh was like the jingling of bells.

“____, hey,” Jules stood right in front of me, her outstretched hand holding my phone, “it’s been ringing nonstop.”

I took it from her and was surprised she hadn’t answered it when I saw Hongjoong’s name on the missed calls.

I stood up and walked to the living room, I called him back but he didn’t answer. I nearly bit through my lip as I chewed on it.

I quickly sent Hongjoong three messages quickly in a row asking if he would be my date. He responded almost as fast and asked if he needed to dress nicely. I smiled like the cat that ate the canary, telling him to wear what he wears to work.

I was more dressed up than Hongjoong has ever seen. I was wearing what my mom liked to call a “Sunday best“ outfit, one you would only wear to church or to a special dinner. 

I was on the ground floor of the apartment complex, my hand fidgeting with my phone. 

I didn’t notice that Hongjoong was at the doors of the building, until he had sent a message to look up. My stomach erupted with butterflies, no more like a stampede of elephants. But seeing him smiled made my shoulders relax and a deep breath of relief escaped my lips. 

The buttoned up shirt he wore was a dark purple, his whole outfit was fitted and looked like it was tailored to him. His hair had faded to a green color during the past couple weeks, and it was a shock to me to see the change.

I made my way out of the building and towards him.

He smiled at me, “are you ready to go?”

My head nodded at its own accord. I let him lead me out and to a parked car, I was shocked to not see his motorcycle awaiting us.

“I borrowed it from Yunho, I owe him for it though,” Hongjoong laughed, noticing my shocked expression.

He opened the door for me, letting me get in first, I buckled my seat belt. The car smelled of air fresheners and was very clean; I tried not to laugh as Hongjoong slowly pulled away from the curb and drove like a first time driver.

The whole drive was spent catching up - even though we talked pretty much all the time, occasionally interrupted by my telling him directions. After the last turn toward my childhood home was said out loud I felt nervous, my hands started to sweat and my heart rate picked up.

Hongjoong glanced over and took my hand in his.

His hand never let go of mine the entire walk from the car to the front door. I hesitated knocking on the door, Hongjoong again noticed and knocked for us. My mom greeted us, and he squeezed my hand.

“Good, you’re here, come in,” she said, her glance towards our hands didn’t go unnoticed.

She ushered us inside, taking our jackets and laying them on the arms of a maid.

“Mrs. (Y/L/N), it’s lovely to finally meet you, do you mind if I talk to you,” Hongjoong said, releasing my hand and remained in the entrance hall.

I stood and waited, interested and slightly worried about what he might say.

Hongjoong stood straight, his chin raised high, “I understand you want what is best for _____, but they honestly don’t need you to act like a prison warden,” his words made my mom blanch, “and they sure don’t need you to treat them like you do, it’s no excuse to hit someone because they upset you, and if you ever lay a hand on _____ again, I’ll involve the police,” Hongjoong’s words rang unopposed in the quiet hallway.

My mom stood there, her mouth gaped open like a fish trying to breath on land. 

Before she could get a word out, Hongjoong cut her off, “at least I can honestly say I care about them without an ulterior motive,” he returned to my side and took my hand in his. 

The maid led us silently towards the dining room. My mom stood unmoved, I could feel her eyes on us as we walked away.

Throughout the dinner, people were talking happily and asking questions to the bride-to-be. My mother steered clear of Hongjoong and I the whole time. 

“So, Hongjoong, what is it you do,” my grandpa on my mom’s side asked. 

Hongjoong swallowed his wine before speaking, “I work as a graphics designer for an advertisement company,” he answered, making me realize I knew nothing of his personal life other than his band. 

My grandpa conversed with Hongjoong, I was happy he was getting along with my family. 

“He seems nice,” I heard behind me, I turned to see my soon-to-be sister-in-law. 

I smiled and nodded, “he is, and also congratulations on pinning my brother down,” I tease, knowing they had been circling around each other since university and finally started to date when she confessed at his graduation. 

She blushed and looked towards my brother who was talking with our cousins. Although my brother had been spoiled by our mother he never let that get to him, he admitted after we had both moved out that the attention made him uncomfortable. He also apologized and promised to be a better brother. 

“I hope you found someone you deserve _____,” she said, casting a look towards Hongjoong who had appeared at my side. 

I nodded sending her a smile. 

“It’s getting late, you okay to leave,” Hongjoong asked, his hand in the pockets of his slacks. 

I nodded, “I have to say bye first,” I replied, leading him around to say so long to the groups of family gathered chatting. 

I hugged my grandparents and father, and sent another good-bye to my brother and future in-laws.

We walked out to the car and got in, my cheeks were flushed from the wine and I was feeling warm.

“You okay, ____,” Hongjoong asked, causing me to look at him. 

His face showed only signs of concern.

I was a bit worried so I asked, “are you okay to drive?”

He let out a laugh, “I’m fine, I only had a little wine, you on the other hand,” he said, his words trailing off. 

I nodded, “I had a lot, family functions are hell.”

I looked back at him, “you’re really pretty,” I blurted out. 

Hongjoong laughed, “and you are quite drunk, your hangover is going to suck,” he said, while turning over the engine. 

The drive was quiet and calm, Hongjoong’s radio played old classics as the streetlights gave me brief looks at his face. I felt a stir of emotions in me as he met my eyes briefly before looking back towards the road. 

Maybe Jules was right, maybe I do want to kiss him.

~ Sean x Finn - A band AU~

There’s this somewhat lengthy AU I wrote in the beginning of May but wasn’t ready to post it. It’s more detailed NSFW than the rest of the snippets I’ve posted here and I guess I felt self-conscious about it, but.. it’s stupid? Soo fuck insecurities, here comes a dose of a smutty AU with the boys. The Humboldt Crew has become a relatively famous alternative band among teens in Seattle's area in the last 6 years. The members are all teenage runaways, highschool drop-outs who met and connected through their same goal in life; making music (and getting high also helped in bonding). They play punk music with a hint of some softer vibes here and there. Cassidy's the lead singer, with the occasional acoustic guitar, Hannah, the eldest of them's behind the drums. Penny plays the bass while Finn, the youngest, shreds the electric guitar. 

Finn's 24, got his dreads in a ponytail with all sorts of beads in it, his left arm is covered in wristbands, has different kinds of metal rings, covering parts of his 'free piza' tattoo which isn't his only ink by any means. He's got the triangles, the vertical line on his chin, the few other lines and nonsense scattered all over his body which he got while being wasted or just because he could. He even has a full-sleeve on his left arm, it's a mix of 'cool, abstract shit' as he’d said it.

Finn's easy going, very sweet and chill with their fans, more often than not hooking up with some of them but he's got a steady fuck buddy thing going on with Hannah if neither of them get a date by the end of the night after a gig. Finn loves to fuck, just like his tattoo suggests, the post-concert adrenaline mixed with the marijuana making those strangers all the more appealing. Deep down he knows he’s missing something. The feel of belonging romantically to someone else and having a meaningful connection is something he wishes he had but doesn’t feel like he deserves it. 

Sean's a band geek, currently a senior in college at the age of 22. He's studying art, already making money out of it due to his luck, talent and having a best friend who majors in marketing. Lyla manages the advertisement, finds clients for him and is basically doing everything important accounting work for her childhood best friend, so naturally they share the income. It's a working deal between the two, helped them find a small but nice little apartment. They get graphic design commissions from small and medium-sized businesses to have their logo made, the style of their website, menus for restaurants and so on.

Sean's love life is dull, to put it bluntly. They go to college parties with Lyla and different concerts in the city so he's sort of trying to have fun, meeting new people along the way. He's bisexual and not a virgin in any sense. Had three girlfriends in the past and a boyfriend but none of them ended too well. Sean feels like he didn't find common ground with any of them, not in a classical romantic sense and not between the sheets either so they weren't long-lasting relationships. Sean was longing to finally find someone like that so Lyla, the Love Witch was on the lookout for him, 'advertising' not only his art but her best friend too whenever she had the chance, even though Sean asked her not to, multiple times.

Sean knows The Humboldt Crew's music, been a fan with Lyla since around the beginning. They get a commission from them to make different designs for their merch and their third album cover. Needless to say, he's excited to be working on that and as a friendly gesture, they even receive V.I.P. tickets to one of their shows. They get to rock out in the front row, singing along to the lyrics they both know so well with a plastic cup of beer in their hands and whoa, that guitarist is kinda hot?

Finn's a star, but one of those who don't even realize how good they are. Finn goes with the flow, he's confident and isn't afraid to be himself on stage, he enjoys the music immensely and it's showing in his behavour. He's jumping around with Penny and Cassidy, sharing grins and joyful looks, even takes off his tank top halfway through the concert to the crowd's amazement. Lyla notices Sean's interest and tells him how she's heard that he was pansexual so he's got a chance but Sean brushes it off, not believing that for a second.

She drags him backstage after the concert to meet the band. They're just as chill as they seem from afar, a very interesting crew with different personalities that somehow still found a way to work together. Sean can tell they're like a family from how they act around each other. The second Finn lays eyes on Sean from across the room, he just knows he needs to get to him so he walks up and introduces himself charmingly, flirting from the get go which instantly has Sean's cheeks go red because holy shit, this guy.

Finn picks up on it, knows he's got a chance and makes it his mission to seduce Sean because he's fucking smitten with the shy artist. Sean stammers, feeling like and idiot, especially since Finn's still half-naked with his sexy tattoos out in the open and are those nipple piercings? Lyla sees Sean's face and doesn’t need more, she scores them an invite to the band's house, where the private afterparty is held.

Of course, they get high. The artist doesn’t treat him differently just because he’s semi-famous. Meanwhile, Sean's touched by his patience and thanks him for being so cool, also shuffles closer to the tattooed punk because he does want it, tells him so. 

"Then what are you afraid of?" The question breezes out of Finn’s mouth, the corners quirking up from finding Sean adorable.

"Nothing." Sean whispers back before closing the distance between them and it's one of those legendary, movie-like kisses that neither of them had before, with fireworks going off in the background. One that shakes you to the core and leaves you trembling, sucks the breath right out of your lungs. Sparks fly and it turns extremely heated with Sean swinging his leg over Finn's lap, Finn's calloused guitarist fingers travel up his tshirt at the back and pull the artist closer in desperation. Finn’s tongue tests the waters, asking permission into Sean’s mouth and he gains it almost immediately. After a few minutes of making out, they're both so stupidly hard, grinding mindlessly against each other while exchanging the sloppy kisses that fill up the night air with wet smacking sounds and occasional moans from the both of them. Finn's the one to initiate continuing it in his room, ready to back out if needed but as Sean's lustfilled eyes find his, telling him to lead the way, he’s sure about what comes next.

They sneak by the others and up the stairs but they're not even fully on the second level before Finn presses Sean against the wall and their lips collide in burning passion. Instead of focusing on what you do or what you sell or why you’re awesome, instead focus on why your customer should care. How do you help them? How do you shoulder their burdens? Ease their plan? Make their lives better/richer/smarter? That is the big story one can create.

  The website isn’t mobile-friendly: - As it is well known fact that now a day people are browsing the internet on their phones. They don’t always use their computer. At any crowded place, public place all one are using their mobile. So, it’s important to make sure your website is mobile-friendly so that it can be comfortably viewed and navigated via different cell phones, tablets, and other devices. The Cultural Politics of Softness

Artist Lora Mathis was the first to spell it out for me: radical softness can be used as a weapon. Their well-known piece, “Radical Softness as a Weapon” showed these words surrounded by pearls, diamond earrings, and knives. Though the piece began making the rounds on the internet a few years ago, the interest in softness has continued to circulate, and show up in sometimes unexpected places.

By softness I mean a general orientation to the world that foregrounds vulnerability, emotionality, and earnestness. This stands in contrast to hardness, an approach that often relies on irony and sarcasm to shore up the image of infallible impenetrability. Hardness wants to appear unattached and unaffected. Hardness wants to believe it can pull itself up by the bootstraps. Hardness wants us to see this as strength.

The preference for hardness that prevails in many circles betrays a hefty stake in the (neo)liberal myth of the autonomous, independent subject. But many argue that acknowledging our vulnerability foregrounds our actual interdependent human nature, rather than pretending we could live without each other.

The shift to softness is multi-pronged; it can be charted through pop music (from Katy Perry’s 2010-era party pop to Ariana Grande’s earnest “thank u” to her ex-boyfriends), graphic design (Pantone’s dubbing “rose quartz” and “serenity” the colours of the year in 2016), public campaigns about mental health (like Bell’s (in)famous “Let’s Talk”), and advertising (like Wonder Bread’s newest slogan, “The Power of Softness”). But it is in queer, feminist politics that softness seems to be rooted. Actually, because it stands in opposition to (neo)liberal norms of rationality and independence, softness is an inherently queer, feminist stance.

In recent years, there has been feminist backlash against the notion of being “chill,” what author and activist Virgie Tovar describes as “an environment where low expectations, low commitment, and zero accountability are considered normal and, in fact, laudable.” Writer Emma Pitman considers the attribute, “chill,” a paltry prize for a woman’s “perceived indifference, complicity, and disinterest in holding [men] accountable if they act like rogue douchebags.” Remembering that “‘chill’ actually sucks,” Pitman opts for the alternative: earnestness, the only way she sees to cut through “Ironic Sexism.” “Instead of valorising earnestness in the abstract, I’ll get literal and make the vulnerable, uncool admission that ironic sexism hurts me,” she writes, indeed shattering the image of impenetrability.

Feminist writer Jessica Valenti, too, seems to be tired of laughing it off. In her memoir Sex Object, Valenti claims, “The feminism that’s popular right now is largely grounded in using optimism and humour to undo the damage that sexism has wrought. […] But maybe we’re doing ourselves a disservice by working so hard to move past what sexism has done to us rather than observe it for a while.”

For these writers, being earnest means honouring pain—especially that instilled by sexism and patriarchy—and doing so is a way to construct protective boundaries that work better than irony and humour ever could. Irony offers no way to appeal to each other’s humanity; humour doesn’t ask someone to be accountable for their actions. Both are indirect, and at best simply offer commentary on the current situation rather than demand its interruption. In contrast, softness means admitting, “you hurt me,” but also, “I deserve better.”

Meanwhile, posts about tenderqueers and soft femmes have been circulating on Tumblr since at least 2012, indicating a queer pull towards the tender and soft, revealed by an inclination toward both feelings and floral prints. The tenderqueer hashtag leads to text posts about vulnerability, coping, and feelings, and selfies of queer and non-binary people, often those with pastel hair and/or dapper outfits. The soft femme hashtag yields more, and more varied, results, but hosts a robust sample of shimmery pink outfits, florals, and pastel makeup.

In particular, the soft femme tag led me to artists like Starchild Stela, whose art combines hyper-feminine imagery like baby animals, bows, and doll-like figures with statements like, “non-binary and bitter” or, “no pity for rapists.” Like Pitman’s suggested approach, Stela holds nothing back, their messages are direct and honest—but delivered in a pretty, feminized vehicle.

The aforementioned Mathis and Alok Vaid-Menon are other non-binary artists that are well known for embracing vulnerability. Vaid-Menon’s epic selfies are often captioned with candid descriptions of the transmisogyny they are targeted by, that they refuse to be erased or silenced by. Mathis’ illustrations and poetry frequently ruminate on themes of past trauma and mental illness. Neither tries to hide their emotional responses, but rather they strategically employ vulnerability to raise political awareness about the social structures that enable and perpetuate these painful experiences.

Their Instagram accounts also showcase contemporary queer aesthetics that match those seen on Tumblr. It is not merely coincidental that pastel-hued hair became popular alongside the impulse to get real about our trauma and mental illness, to be honest about the emotional toll of the oppressive structures we live in, or to call ourselves “tender” and “soft.” Softness is both aesthetic and political, and aesthetics are never separate from politics. That softness often looks pink and flouncy, and feels vulnerable and emotional—in other words, that softness is feminized—is not merely coincidental either.

The association of vulnerability with femininity and womanhood is part of what makes it so uncomfortable to a patriarchal society. The turn to softness, then, is an affront to patriarchal rule. It is evidence that we are losing patience with the primacy of the individual, with the fiction of independence. We are collapsing under the pressure to be chill, to be detached—from both each other and our own humanity. We’re using what has been feminized to chase out these hollow masculinist principles that do not represent us or serve us.

Feminists and queers have always resisted problematic and oppressive mainstream norms—it is their raison d’être, after all. They have long been ready to supplant masculinist perspectives for feminist and femme ones, to reconsider kinship and insist that how we relate to each other matters, indeed, to admit that “the personal is political.” Femme politics in particular are about reclaiming and revaluing what has been discarded and dismissed for being feminine. The turn to softness extends this political impulse by reclaiming and revaluing that which is still seen as too mushy and too much: emotions, interdependence, and caring—about anything.

The number of likes and followers steadily accumulating around “abrasively feminine” and “aggressively vulnerable” content suggests the currency of such an approach. Maybe someone else’s crying selfie makes you feel less weird about crying; maybe someone else’s description of their mental illness symptoms helps you seek therapy for your own; maybe someone else’s account of harassment pushes you to engage with others more thoughtfully; maybe sharing these posts among friends helps us start important conversations, helps us learn to care and advocate for each other better, helps us realize that we’re not alone—and, importantly, that if we’re not alone, then maybe it’s not us, maybe it’s the system.

This is the critical aspect that gets skipped over in the rush to capitalize on the cultural turn to softness. Softness is not “showing up” as a temporary, band-aid solution for superficial pain, it is showing up, hoping to transform others and the entire socio-political terrain with our radical honesty and vulnerability. In its queer and feminist context, softness is the place from which we can build better political principles, the place from which we can build a better world.

The turn to softness has ushered in new political sensibilities. We’re no longer interested in pretending we can live without each other, or pretending we don’t feel pain. Softness’ possibilities—like queer femme healer Dacia Holliday’s promise that “we get to heal this lifetime”—are appealing, so appealing that even the mainstream wants to explore them. In short, the feminists and queers are winning the culture wars, if not the political ones (at least, not yet), with superstars like Ariana Grande and corporations like Wonder Bread the often unlikely ambassadors.

“Ask me anything” Finally!!!

My creative responded a couple of days before the deadline...

My long long list with all the creatives came to an end with Marta Cerdà accepting my interview... but that wasn’t the end... It took her 3 weeks to answer my questions... I can say I loathed this project and every workshop related to the creative was stressful as I didn’t have a creative!!

Marta Cerdà is a graphic designer from Barcelona. Her main body of work focuses on the boundaries between typography and illustration. Before founding her own studio in 2008, Marta worked in advertising agencies and design studios across Europe. On her own, she has contributed to global projects calling for design, illustration and custom typography for art, culture, editorial and advertising clients. Her work has been recognized by professional organizations including the Type Director’s Club and the Art Director’s Club, where she was named as an ADC Young Gun. MARTA CERDA'S CLIENTS INCLUDE Nike, Coca-Cola, Google, Ray-Ban, Volkswagen, Random House, Penguin Books, Wired, ESPN, Esquire, Fortune, The Guardian and Vanity Fair.

Hi Anila,

I had to go super fast, sorry I would have liked to answer you with longer explanations, but this week is over busy.. Good luck and thanks for the questions, they were really thought!

• Your work stands out worldwide, during your creative process, do you think of what is going to be a successful fit or do you trust your creativity to lead your work?

It's a very interesting and original question. I try to do both things at the same time. Its is very important for me that I feel I am part of the design but it must be something that I think it will like, in general or for the target it's going to be for. But it happens sometimes that things you think they'll work they don't. 

• You are blending illustration with typography in a unique way, did that start as a way of self-expression or as a need to differentiate yourself?

I think both too. I think that today we value more things that are crafted than in the 90's, for example, 'cause we are already used to technology. 

• Do you have time for skill development or do you learn through each new project? 

Now I learn through each project. I quite often get briefs that are open enough to try new things. But, in any case, I try to find time every month to learn new things, like a software and do workshops and attend to conferences, go to exhibitions, read books, etc. 

• Which part of the creative process do you believe is usually the most important and what would you advice a design student to master?

The first part it is the most difficult, when you still haven't found the idea. You need a lot of trust in yourself and patience and perseverance in that part. The other part is more technical, you learn with time and by doing. The other part I think it interacts more with your character, so you need to be very critic to yourself, and have this balance with a good self esteem and patience. 

• My background is greek and my will is to work in Europe in the future — what challenges did you meet working in different countries?

Making a new network it is the most challenging part. You need to make a network in order to survive. The other challenging part is the paperwork, it is always a nightmare. 

• When do you put an end to a design piece? Is it the deadline?

Yes, the deadline always is the end. If it's not enough, I sleep less and work until I find the solution.

• What are you currently fascinated by and how is it feeding into your work?

3D and its relation with typography. I am trying now to learn Cinema 4D and experiment more in this direction.

• What’s your personal motto? Or how do you describe yourself in three words?

Soory, my english sucks, here I describe it with a few more words: I work a lot, I like to live a lot too, I am very insecure, and I enjoy a lot working, it is my save place on earth.
