There is a type of old glass called “sun-purpled” that was transparent when manufactured but has gradually turned purple over years of exposure to UV rays. It’s a chemical reaction from manganese in the glass. I first learned about this when looking at some antique purple windows in Beacon Hill in Boston (fancy neighborhood full of picturesque brick row houses)—there was a plaque explaining the phenomenon nearby.
I was reading something about sun-purpled glass today and learned that collectors and historians have strong feelings about the practice of people putting old glass under lamps to cause swift artificial purple-ization:
“There is a dilemma in the world of Early American Pattern Glass that needs addressing. It is the widespread practice, in the southwestern United States, of exposing EAPG to a germicidal black light for a few weeks or directly to the sun for an extended period of time thus turning the glass artificially purple. The merchandising MO is to buy old glass, do the exposure thing, take the pieces that turn a pukey light purple (some flint won’t turn), hike up the price, write a little purple flyer with a charming story about how the sun, over the past hundred years has reacted with a chemical, ‘magnesium’ (sic), in the glass and created this glorious purple antique.”
The scandal! Truly there are millions of tiny specific dramas in every corner of every single discipline, hobby, fandom, subculture, etc.

I hosted Christmas dinner and it was an excuse to use all the lovely stuff I've thrifted.
We ate off Blue Willow plates that were maybe 10-30 years old (dishwasher safe so yay) and I served dishes in Blue Willow serving bowls and platters that were anywhere from 10-100 years old. I love Blue Willow because it's been made for so long that you can pick up modern pieces that you can put in the dishwasher and also precious antique pieces that you only pull out for special occasions but it all still matches. I spend anywhere between $1-$30 on a piece of Blue Willow and it's been very easy to build up a complete service.
We drank from my 1980s French Arcoroc Rosaline glassware that I've collected for the last couple of years and have finally finally got enough wine glasses to have a matched set. It's toughened glass so it can stand a few knocks. I've never paid more than $8 for a piece and most of them have been round the $2 mark.
We used a silver plated cutlery service that my parents thrifted 20 years ago, complete in it's original canteen. It's not particularly old, maybe 1950s but the fact that it matches and has that silver shine and comes in a special wooden box makes it feel very fancy. They got the complete set in the canteen for $50 which was a splurge but it's complete and looks like it was never used.
I served desert in my Sun Purple glass. Glass made between approx 1850 and 1915 often had manganese added to make it water clear but over time exposure to sunlight turns it purple. I have some beautiful fancy bowls that look amazing for serving deserts. It's not a strong purple color (unless it's been exposed to A LOT of sunlight, like kept on a windowsill for decades) and it often gets mixed in with the clear glass, and since thrift stores have so much clear glass I usually pick it up for a few bucks a piece.
My table looked amazing and everything co-ordinated beautifully and I've had So Much Fun building up this collection. Why they hell do people go to big box stores?

'Window glass', photo by Ruth Thompson (kayaksailor). "This is a portion of the old glassware I have in my kitchen window - the clear is my grandmother and great aunt's from the early 1900's, the small bottle on the right is older...all are turning purple due to the manganese in the glass reacting to the sun's UV light."

Ever wondered about old glass bottles and why some are Purple or Amythest? Upon exposure to sunlight, old glass will turn a light pink or lavender to moderately dark amethyst or purple depending on the amount of manganese and amount of ultraviolet (UV) light. OUR PANTRY PROFILE: THYME
Tumblr media
by Crooked Bear Creek Organic Herbs
Thyme {Thymus vulgaris}
Common garden thyme has been used for protection, courage, food, and medicine since the beginning of recorded history. A low-growing, aromatic shrub native to the rocky hills of the Mediterranean and Southern Europe, it’s now a staple of herb gardens around the world.
Roman soldiers bathed in thyme to maintain their courage and strength before a battle, and in medieval times, departing knights received thyme-embroidered scarves from their lady loves to keep up spirits and inspire courage. A popular belief was that thyme tea prevented nightmares and even encouraged dreams of fairies. Carrying thyme warded off evil spells and witchcraft, while sewing thyme and fern into the hem of a dress kept the Devil from taking a woman as his bride. Placing a sprig of thyme in one shoe and a sprig of rosemary in the other on the Eve of St. Agnes {January 20} was said to give young women visions of their future husbands.
Greek Physician Dioscorides declared that “{Thyme} finds distinguished uses as the healthy man’s seasoning,” referring to thyme’s culinary and medicinal use. Pliny the Elder espoused the use of thyme honey as a restorative delight. Herbalists in the Middle Ages considered thyme an important tonic stimulant and antispasmodic that treated epilepsy and melancholy. Nicholas Culpepper designated thyme “a noble strengthener of the lungs” and found no better remedy for whooping cough, warts, sciatica, gout, and digestive ills. During the waves of plague that spread across Europe, thyme was used as a germicide – a practice that continued through World War I when it was used as an antiseptic to treat soldier’s wounds and purify the air of hospitals and sickrooms well into the 20th-century.
For the Body:
Though there are hundreds of species of thyme, Thymus vulgaris {garden thyme} and, to a lesser degree, Thymus citriodorus {lemon thyme} are the most medicinal. Thyme is a wonderful source of vitamins C, A, and B6, as well as folate, iron, calcium, zinc, potassium, and manganese.
Thanks to antispasmodic and bitter principles, thyme is an effective carminative, relaxing the smooth muscle of the stomach to relieve cramping, bloating, and indigestion common with irritable bowel syndrome {IBS} and chronic gastritis.
Warm and drying, thyme also serves as an excellent remedy for colds and flu, drying up and expelling mucus from the lungs and sinuses, while its antitussive, anti-inflammatory actions soothe irritated bronchial tubes, quieting both wet and dry coughs. Combined with ground ivy or primrose, thyme is a proven treatment for acute bronchitis. A 2016 study verified a combination of the three, showing a significant effect on inflammatory symptoms – coughing and difficulty breathing – associated with bronchial infection and shortening the length of illness. All three herbs are currently found in some commercial cough syrups.
Thymol, the volatile oil found in thyme’s leaves and blossoms, holds remarkable antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. It has shown extraordinary efficacy in combating common bacteria. Internally, remedies using thyme leaves target upper respiratory infections, candida {even thrush}, gingivitis, and streptococcus, and have impressive activity against H. pylori bacteria, the frequent cause of stomach ulcers. Externally, preparations of thyme essential oil {which contain thymol} can be used to effectively treat both fungal and parasitic infections like athlete’s foot and ringworm. In February 2018, a study in the Saudi Journal of Biological Sciences found that thyme extract has a significant effect on most food-borne pathogens, including E. coli, making it a consideration for use as a natural food preservative. Thymol is now the main disinfectant in many natural home-cleaning products.
Grow It:
A hardy perennial mint, thyme grows best in Zones 5-9. Thyme seeds are difficult to germinate; most folks start them from seedlings. To sow seeds indoors, gently cover with soil and water and put in a warm place. Germination occurs in 1-12 weeks. When seedlings are 4 inches high, transfer them outside after the last frost and plant 9 inches apart in full sun in well-drained, slightly alkaline soil or in containers. Thyme grows 4-8 inches high and needs regular pruning to grow well, so harvest often. Fragrant, edible white- to light-purple flowers appear from May to August and are a favourite of bees.
Keep it Fresh:
Although delicate herbs lose their flavor after freezing, thyme’s hardy nature makes it a good candidate for the freezer; put thyme leaves in ice cube trays, cover with water, and freeze; or place sprigs in a freezer bag. Take some out whenever you want to add a touch of thyme to your dishes. Thyme also dries well in dehydrators or tied and hung upside-down in a warm, dry spot. When dried, remove leaves and store in an airtight glass jar.
Eat It:
Essential to Italian, French, Creole, and Cajun dishes, thyme adds its earthy flavor to sauces, stews, stuffing, poultry, and seafood. It’s a key herb in a bouquet garni as well as in Herbes de Provence and Caribbean jerk seasonings. Spread thyme butter on garlic bread and sprinkle lemon thyme on custards and souffles for an unusual touch. Thyme blends well with herbs like rosemary, parsley, sage, and oregano. However, I must agree with Pliny the Elder: thyme honey is one of the best ways to experience the delightful qualities of this versatile kitchen staple.
Thyme honey is a delicious way to take your medicine. Use in teas, on breakfast treats, or all by itself.
Fill a jar 2/3-full with fresh thyme – even the blossoms. Cover with raw honey, stirring to remove air bubbles. Seal and set in a warm, sunny window for two weeks. When done, gently heat the honey to strain {do not heat over 110 degrees F. or you will cook off beneficial enzymes}. Bottle and store in a cool, dry place.
Contraindications: Do not take thyme in medicinal doses if you are pregnant, nursing, or have seizure disorders.

Ways to Maintain Your Swimming Pool
Swimming Pool
The tedious maintenance of the swimming pool is simplified by us as a one stop solution, right from maintaining the required water quality, parameters to filtration units and related pumps. We offer a comprehensive solution with regular preventive care.
Water Circulation
Run the pump for about 8-12 hours per day. Circulating the water helps prevent algae and bacteria growth, and running the water through the filter helps trap contaminants and other particles. Plus, good circulation mixes and disperses the chemicals throughout the system.
The best time to run the pump is daytime and when adding chemicals to the water.
General Pool Maintenance
Clean water and balanced water chemistry are the keys to pool maintenance. Establish a weekly routine to clean the pool and maintain the chemical balance. A shock treatment solves and prevents the majority of pool problems. Test the pH and free available chlorine in the pool water and shock-treat, if necessary, on a weekly basis. Do an additional shock treatment if any of the following occurs:
Very heavy rains and windstorms
More swimmers than usual
Foul odor from the pool water
Extreme temperatures
Swimmers with burning, red eyes
Algae growth
Murky, slimy water
Pool Chemical Safety
While pool chemicals are available to solve almost all water problems, they can be dangerous to humans and animals if handled improperly. Chemicals can cause skin and eye damage and can be fatal if swallowed. To keep yourself and your pool safe.
Follow these pool chemical safety precautions:
Keep all pool products away from children and animals.
Wear rubber gloves and goggles, and wash clothes and hands immediately after handling chemicals. If your skin comes in contact with any chemicals, flush immediately with cold water for 15 minutes and call a physician.
Follow the dosage directions and safety precautions listed on the pool product label.
Store chemicals according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Never return spilled material to the original container or place in the household garbage.
Use clean, dry measuring equipment for chemicals. Rinse all measuring equipment after using.
Don't mix spa, pool or household chemicals together.
Add chemicals to water. Don't add water to chemicals. Adding water to chemicals contaminates the entire container.
Don't allow dry chlorine to become damp or wet.
Keep open flames away from pool chemicals.
Don't reuse empty containers. Check with local, state and federal regulations for proper disposal.
Discard any unused chemicals after closing your pool. Follow local ordinances for disposing of hazardous materials. Buy new chemicals when you reopen the pool.
Testing the Water Chemistry
During the swim season test your water weekly.
Step 1
Check the water balance with a test kit. Dip the test strip in the water and compare it to the chart. Some kits can be used with mobile apps to store your information and make recommendations based on your test strip readings. Always run the pump when adding chemicals.
Caution
Use pool chemicals exactly as directed. Follow all precautions for storage as well as use of protective equipment and clothing.
Step 2
Check the sanitizer levels. Sanitizers either contain chlorine (most common), salt or bromine.
Chlorine levels should be between 1 and 4 parts per million. If they’re high, don’t worry. The sun burns off chlorine.
Step 3
Shock the water. Pool shock helps destroy contaminants in your water. It’s best to add shock weekly, as well as before and after pool parties, after storms, and during periods of high temperatures.
Step 4
Add algaecide weekly. This is a good preventative measure to slow down algae growth.
Common Water Problems
Cloudy Water
Poor circulation, poor filtration and improper water balance can lead to cloudy pool water. Test the water frequently and correct as needed to help keep the water clear. Shock or a water clarifier can help do the trick. Follow the directions on the product label.
Algae Growth
Algae growing on the surfaces can be caused by lack of sanitizer or preventative algaecide, or poor water balance. A high pH will impact how well your sanitizer performs. If algae is a problem, balance the water. Then add an algae treatment and clean all the surfaces. Use algaecide on a weekly basis as preventative maintenance.
If your pool appears green, algae might not be the culprit. Your pool water could appear to be several colors because you have metal present in the water, which the chlorine has oxidized. So, instead of green algae, your pool could have copper in it. If your pool has a reddish tint to it, your pool water probably has iron in it. Purple or black tints suggest your pool water might have manganese in it.
Clean the Pool Surfaces
Cleaning should be done on a regular basis
Skim the water with a pool skimmer.
Brush the walls with a pool brush.
Vacuum all surfaces, especially areas that get little circulation. These are prime spots for algae growth. Vacuums can be automatic or manual. The steps for using a manual pool vacuum are as follows.
Make sure the filter is running. Then place the vacuum head and pole with the hose attached in the pool to fill with water.
Hold the open end of the hose over one of the return jets to blow out all of the air in the hose. When the bubbles stop, have someone turn off the filter, but keep the end of the hose underwater.
Always turn off the pump when changing the filter settings.
Insert an adapter into the skimmer intake. Hook up the hose to the adapter.
Set the filter to WASTE and turn it on. This bypasses the system and sends the dirty water directly to your drain or waste site. Since you’re removing water as you vacuum, it’s a good idea to fill the pool with a hose at the same time.
Slowly guide the vacuum along the bottom of the pool. When you’re finished, turn off the filter, disconnect the hose and turn the system back to FILTER.
Backwash the Filter
Backwashing cleans the filter element. The water is reversed through the element directly to the waste line. Check the filter directions for back-washing schedules. Typically, if the pressure reading is 10 PSI higher than when the system was reloading or cleaned, the system needs to be backwashed.
Turn off the filter and set the multi-port valve to BACKWASH.
Connect a backwash hose to the waste port if needed. Make sure to purchase the correct size of hose. Run the hose to a safe waste site.
Some systems have the waste directly connected to a drain, so you will not need a hose.
Turn the filter on and run it for about 3-5 minutes, or until the water is clean in the sight glass. The sight glass should be next to the waste port.
Shut off the system and turn the valve to RINSE. Run the system for about 30 seconds. This is an important step, as the RINSE setting allows the water to run through the filter and re-set the filter element. After 30 seconds turn off the system.
Open the pressure relief valve by the pressure gauge. Turn the system to FILTER and turn it on. When water comes out of the valve, close it and now the filter cycle has started. Take note of the pressure reading so you’ll know when you need to backwash again.

Identification of Finds • Re: Glass finds from a ploughed field probably modern
Glass turns lilac or purple due to a reaction with the ultra violet light and the manganese content of the item. Manganese was added to achieve clarity to glass which would otherwise have ended up with an aqua hue due to the contaminants in the batch. Round about the time of the first world war, manganese was dropped in favour of selenium as an additive to achieve clarity, interestingly this turns glass slightly yellow or straw coloured in sunlight. The switchover was apparently due to the fact that manganese was vital for bomb production in the war!! Anyhow, generally speaking, if the glass has a lilac hue, it would be very early 20th cent in date at the latest and would take years of exposure to the sun (especially in UK lol)to achieve this.
Thanks for that, you learn something every day with this hobby! I mostly find broken wine bottle pieces, usually the style of campaign with the thicker glass in these fields, along with the usual clear type from most other things so I'll remember this info

Today for $2.50 I picked up a glass bowl that is minimum 105 years old but could be anywhere up to 170 years old. From the mid 1800s to around 1915 they used to add manganese to glass to make it ‘water clear’ (not that greenish tint you often get with old glass) the problem with this is that after years of exposure to UV the manganese makes the glass turn purple-ish so when they discovered a better additive they stopped using it, which is how I can date it to at least 105 years old. My bowl is really purple, it’s had a lot of sun, somebody probably kept it on a windowsill for years.
I love knowing shit like this, going to thrift shops and picking up stuff that I know is special but the people doing the pricing think it’s just old junk.

Help Target Inflammation by Having a Sip of This Herbal Tea
Unless you come from parts of Asia where it’s been extensively used, it’s highly likely that you’re unfamiliar with burdock root. Popularly used as an ingredient in Japanese cuisine, burdock root is usually added to stir-fries,1 consumed raw,2 used as a broth3 or pickled in apple cider vinegar to prolong shelf life.4
However, an easy way to use burdock root and possibly obtain benefits is by steeping the roots in boiling water to make burdock root tea. Learn more about this tea’s uses, how you can make this beverage at home and what you must watch out for when drinking it.
What Is Burdock Root Tea?
Burdock root tea is concocted by steeping roots of the burdock (Arctium lappa) plant. For centuries now, burdock roots, leaves and flowers have been well-respected for their medicinal and nutritional abilities.5 The burdock plant stands between 1 and 2 meters (3.2 to 6.5 feet) when fully grown, and has large leaves that can grow up to 50 centimeters (19.6 inches), with white undersides. Between June and October, the plant bears purple flowers extending away from the plant’s bracts.
Burdock Root Tea’s Health Benefits
Burdock root tea may be helpful in addressing certain conditions, such as:6,7
High blood pressure8
Colds
Flu
Fever
Arthritis
Gout
Headaches9
Indigestion10
Constipation11
Apart from targeting these diseases, burdock root tea may deliver these benefits:12
Promote antioxidant capabilities: The root contains antioxidants such as phenolic acids, quercetin and luteolin13 (all of which may be transferred to the tea) that can shield the body against cell-damaging free radicals.
In a 2011 article in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, researchers suggested that burdock root tea’s antioxidant content may aid in slowing down tumor cell growth.14
Promote diuretic effects: One of burdock root tea’s earliest uses was for detoxifying the body. It can also help purify the blood, and is known to induce sweating and urination.
This effect may benefit your liver, kidneys and lymphatic system. Because it’s a diuretic, burdock root tea may cause the body to eliminate excess toxins, salts and water.15
Act as an expectorant and decongestant: If you have coughs, colds or flu-like symptoms, drinking burdock root tea may help alleviate them by targeting phlegm and mucus. Burdock root tea has antibacterial properties as well.16
Alleviate hair issues: You can address concerns like hair loss and dandruff,17 and boost scalp and follicle health, as burdock root tea is known to contain helpful phytosterols in burdock root tea, while the burdock root plant contains hair-helping essential oils.

Burdock Root Tea Recipe
Ingredients:
• 1 burdock root
• 2 liters (a little over 2 quarts) of water
Procedure:
1. Cut burdock root into thirds. Using a scouring pad, scrape off the dirt on its surface under running water. Do not peel the skin since most of its nutrients are in it. Cut the root into thin slices.
2. Spread all the burdock on a bamboo sieve, cover with a nylon food cover and place under clear sun for one to two days until dry, pliable or almost crisp. If you are not comfortable drying your food in the sun or the weather is not cooperating, use a dehydrator.
3. Place dried burdock in a pan with no oil or liquid. Stir constantly over low heat for 10 minutes until golden brown, crispy and fragrant.
4. Let the burdock cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Store immediately in an airtight glass container. Seal it to prevent moisture.
5. Burdock tea can be cooked or brewed. Boil the water. Add 10 grams (0.35 ounces) of burdock tea leaves and simmer for 10 minutes.
6. If you want to make a single cup of burdock root tea, pour 185- to 212-degree Fahrenheit water onto five to eight pieces of burdock tea leaves in a cup and brew for four to five minutes. Raw honey, chrysanthemum, red dates, wolf berries or mint leaves may be added to taste.
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Total time: 20 minutes
A single-serving of this recipe makes 100 or more grams (about 3 1/2 ounces) of tea.
You can look for burdock root in Oriental markets, natural food stores and Japanese and Taiwanese grocery stores. Pick roots that are medium-sized, firm, unbroken and have taut skin. Do not purchase burdock roots that are overly dry or sunken, since these may not have a pleasant flavor.
When cleaned properly and kept in a cool, well-ventilated place, the root can stay fresh for many months. You can also preserve burdock roots by wrapping them in a paper towel, enclosing them inside a plastic bag and placing them inside your refrigerator’s vegetable compartment, where they can be kept for months.
Should the burdock root turn limp and/or dry, soak it in water until it’s firm again.28 For processed burdock root parts and slices, ensure that they are stored in the refrigerator and used as soon as possible.29 If you aren’t able to purchase fresh burdock root, there are burdock root tea bags available online. Just make sure you’re purchasing from a highly reputable source that provides high-quality tea.
Burdock Root Tea’s Side Effects
Burdock root tea may trigger allergic reactions, including dermatitis, among people who are sensitive to daises, chrysanthemums or ragweed. Should these adverse effects develop, stop drinking burdock root tea immediately.30 Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should avoid this tea because there aren’t enough studies that confirm its safety for these groups.31

I learned about sidewalk prisms (pavement lights) years ago in Seattle and have been fascinated since. A brilliant design solution to illuminate a building's basement. You can often date a building based on the colour of the prism. The purplish coloured ones (originally clear but which became purple over time thanks to the manganese dioxide in the glass) were typically installed prior to WWI. Post WWI selenium dioxide was added to the glass. Ultraviolet light from the sun solarizes that to a strawish colour. #melbourne #99piideas #walkabout #lookdown #architecture #street @theromanmars
