This afternoon's crafting was bought to you by the movie Swallow (2019) 😳 Haley Bennet is Hunter, a woman who marries above her social class, becomes pregnant and struggles with her new life as a housewife with an over-bearing mother in law, (we can all relate, I'm sure 😅). In order to make herself feel more alive, she begins eating inedible objects, starting with a marble, and after requiring an operation, is diagnosed with pica which gets progressively worse. I've avoided watching this film for ages (two years, in fact 😳), because this type of movie has never really appealed to me. I did find it quite slow-going, and there wasn't as much body horror as I had thought. Not that that's a bad thing, by the way... I did, however, find it incredibly sad. I don't want to reveal spoilers, but you grow closer to the main character as the film progresses, and you start to understand her and her motives better, particularly as her husband becomes more controlling but more distant emotionally. For this reason I would have it down as a drama rather than a horror, but the story itself is thought-provoking, and the end is possibly as horrific as it gets...The rest of the cast (to me, anyway), were largely forgettable performances, and without Haley Bennet I'm not sure if this would have held its own. It's not a movie I would recommend, but mainly because the content is quite trigger-inducing. It is a slow, SLOW burn, and if you're in to that sort of movie then you would probably "enjoy" it.
