   the transformation is slow, subtle——change crawls upon his visage disconcertingly, stealing the most familiar parts of his facade in its wake. his smile unfastens; his jaw falls slack. the light in his gaze fades to shade, and so, too, do his eyes turn away from her. the tap! tap! tap! of his fingers rapping against the wood quiets as they come to a standstill, the sound replaced with the creaky, scratchy tsk’s of the branches outside scratching against the window pane. a wintry chill steals his remaining warmth, and his hands hasten to the drink he’s already poured himself. through golden depths, his reflection stares back, hollow, empty, vaguely at best.

   “who is that?” mismatched eyes look at the ‘him’ in the cup, scoffing genially out of a bad habit, “who am i, if’n yer so much better at knowin’ me than i am?”

   “really, tell me. who is the warrior of light, an’ who is albi?” where did one end and the other begin? the corners of his lips tug into a mirthful smirk at first glance——but there’s nothing funny about what he asks. truth was often cruel and harsh, but only rarely was it truly so cold. as smooth as a snake, however, he answers before she might attempt, dismissing it all with a lackadaisical wave reminiscent of one ascian other, “is a trick question. pretend as we might otherwise, being her chosen can’t just be turned on and off, ‘cause everything that happened ‘cause of it is a part of why i am who i am. an’ even if i could separate it, what would that be like? i’d be the smiling hero fer swarms of people and be nothing but upset or cryin’ or in pain fer ye?” albi shakes his head, flattening his ears against his head, “ye deserve better ‘an that. ” 

   taking a swig, the cup lands upon the table with a th-thunk! with amber comfort sloshing about. the taste, he has to admit, is awful. bitter and generally unwelcome, burning as it goes down with a stench that challenges him to hold it down, but he swallows hard and fast. there’s no satisfaction as he breathes back in, shakes his head to and fro. only a solemn, subdued look greets her as his hands fold one over the other, as the face in the whisky ripples and distorts.

   “all the shite i said ta ryne ‘bout being her own person and living free of the title she was given, an’ i can’t even do the same, huh?”

Leaning her head on Ovan's shoulder with a dejected thud, no words would be exchanged, none that Jubei could share with any confidence to keep composed. Shaken by recent events, the most visible being the primordial light returning with fullest brilliance, she is afraid for the worst. She couldn't fight the tears now streaming down her cheeks, surely dampening the raen's shoulder. ❝ What are we going to do ...? ❞ her broken voice whispers. ❝ /He's/ been out for days. You don't think he's-- ❞

“He’s better than that,” he murmurs in response, a premature return to the Crystarium ultimately becoming a strange reflection of the past. Was this what prior tenants saw when this shard had been nearly swallowed by light? What would have looked so serene on the Source was so.. foreboding on the First. Jubei hadn’t seen something like this before, either, had she?.. not like this. Brows furrowed—it was stressful travelling along, but it was a different flavor of stress having to be here, consuming only sheer faith until Albi’to would return.

Still, the au ra’s voice remains calm as a comforting hand comes to nestle upon neatly parted auburn——Ovan believes in him. He always has. The older man lets Jubei borrow his shoulder as long as she needs ( he doesn’t mind at all, in fact, welcomes it ). After all, he’s unsure exactly how something this drastic would be covered up–whatever had happened ( the light within.. a terrifying beast; it wouldn’t allow itself to be contained in something as fragile as glass ) up there was.. it could have been anything.

“Whatever comes through those gates.. we’ll do what we can to help.” This leg of the journey had drastically matured what was left of him—all of them, for that matter. “He won’t break. He won’t allow himself to.” An optimist, perhaps ( or, better yet, attempting to convince himself, too ).
