SwynWriMo Day Fourteen – Neighborly Plotting
Trading Favours ~~ [Compass]
~~ ~~ ~~
@aurora--briar
One thing that hadn't changed since Tom had become sheriff was the odd hours he worked. That was, certainly, a carry over. He didn't mind it, though, maybe because he was just used to it after years. Sometimes, it did make him a fair bit more tired. Unlike firefighting, where there was a lot of downtime, until there wasn't--the police force was always on the go.
He had to do paroles. He had to file paperwork. If he was in his office and not on a call, there was still something to do. There wasn't a bunk he could go nap in.
Which meant, now that he was driving home, he was tired. It was late. Nearing midnight. And, as he turned into Tortuga, his headlights lit up a familiar figure walking down the road. Tom slowed as he pulled up alongside Aurora, making sure to roll the window down so she'd know it was him.
"Hey, you want a ride the rest of the way?"

SwynWriMo Day Twenty-One – Back to the Future Thread
I Can Hear the Bells *** [Clopal]
It was summertime in Swynlake, which was Opal's favourite time of year. She might've been born a winter baby, but summer was where she shined. Between the summer musical and horse riding through Enchantra until the late-setting sun went down, not to mention the strawberries--how could you not love it?
And another constant about summer?
Cousin Claude came to visit.
Opal abandoned her bike against the side of the porch of Bonfamille manor, wedged between the brick and the bushes. Nounou always got after her for it, but she didn't care.
She skipped into the foyer. "Claude!" she called, twirling and the tilting her head to see if she could hear. There were voices coming from the sitting room, so she took off in that direction.
"Bonjour, mon cousin!" she chirped as she burst into the room. "T'ai-je manqué?"
Tumblr media
"Did you leave your bike in the bushes again?" Tonton asked her from where he was sitting in one of the arm chairs but she ignored him to lean to kiss her cousin's cheeks.

SwynWriMo Day Seven – Community Togetherness Thread
I'll Huff and I'll Puff || [Luckylou]
@bad-moon--rising
Toulouse's house had burned down.
This was, of course, not as severe as it might sound. After all, Toulouse had multiple houses. (The Nook, the Bonfamille manor, his father's house in Paris, his property in the farmlands.) And it had not been his home that had burned.
He was rankled, however, because Sophie had done such a lovely job sprucing up the place. And now he was assisting her fees to relocate. Which he was able to do, but he wasn't necessarily happy about it.
The whole thing was a hassle, especially on top of both his spouses rapidly losing all sorts of income.
Still, it could not just lay rotting. The site needed to be cleared or it was going to be deemed a hazard. And he needed to decide what to do with it. Sell the property? Rebuild it and then sell?
Today, he was meeting a contractor to get a quote on just clearing out everything that wasn't salvageable. Some of the walls and foundation were still standing, so he hoped it wasn't a complete loss.
When he arrived, it was to find someone else already there. Which was odd, considering Lou was several minutes ahead of the contractor. The wind changed as he approached and the wolf in his chest growled softly.
Another wolf.
Why was Swynlake crawling with them recently?
"Can I help you?" Lou called across the lawn, voice not nearly as welcoming as the words sounded.

relationship aesthetics: menodora "moon" butterfly-johansen & torvald "tófi" sethson ( @menodoramoon // @ofseptarsis )
"I believe continuing this tête à tête here would be ideal, old friend... wouldn't want to invite a monster home now, would you?"
"And who said I was inviting you into my home?"
"I see you have learned a lesson, after all. Good job, Countess"

relationship aesthetics: willow park & darius deamonne ( @halfawitch-willow // @darius-dues )
Luckily for him, the girl seemed to be able to pull herself together as she explored the contents of the basket. It calmed his unease somewhat, and truthfully it was nice to see such a positive reaction. The Parks had great love for each other, that much was certain. And rare.

Thursday, November 16 – Character #Inspo: Find five existing fictional characters who remind you of your character (or who inspired your character). Post two pieces of inspiration from each character (A gif, a quote, a video clip, a screenshot) and write a little bit about how that character relates to your own.
someth wrong with her <3 an annie manifesto
(spoilers for Glass Onion, Such a Fun Age, Yellowjackets, Succession, and The White Lotus below)
It's no secret that I love unhinged women like this is barely scratching the surface of my favorite characters that inspire Annie but I tried to narrow it down for this.
Birdie Jay from Glass Onion
This is kind of a goofier one, but I loved this character in Glass Onion. I read something once about how Knives Out is about criticizing old money rich people and Glass Onion is about criticizing the new-money-hustle-culture-opportunist type of rich person. I think that's very true, and a lot of Glass Onion is about exposing the lie that these people have something very special and genius about them when in reality they are often employing a combination of luck, good looks, charisma, useful connections, and a willingness to screw people over at times.
Birdie is less sinister and more... kind of stupid. And while I do think Annie is very smart in her own way, she can be very ignorant about things that get her into a lot of trouble. I thought the "sweatshops" thing was hilarious and so Annie— a girlboss building an empire in the fashion space, but she doesn't even know what a sweatshop is. As for the header image, I thought that scene was very fitting as well! Like Annie, Birdie deals with criticism by telling herself this story that other people simply don't understand, that she's just misunderstood and someday they'll all see. I do think that Annie is misunderstood by her peers at times, but that doesn't excuse her behavior and it definitely doesn't make her a visionary lol.
2. Alix Chamberlain/Alex Murphy from Such a Fun Age
This is one of the characters who inspired Annie to begin with. (As a side note, I think it's wild that this book came out in 2019 and now in 2023 the influencer girlboss protagonist shares names with 2 Internet it girls of the 2020s lol). For those who haven't read it, the plot of this book is kind of complicated but it's basically about the misguided ways that white people often respond to racism and sometimes appropriate dialogues about race for their own ends which often undermines movements. It's also largely about hustle culture and liberal white feminism and so all of these things were percolating in my brain when I wrote Annie.
As you can see from the heading, the protagonist, Alix, who is the influencer girlboss in question, changes her name from Alex to Alix, and "Chamberlain" is her husband's last name when she gets married. This is part of what inspired me to have Annie go by Annie instead of Anastasia; Alix did this to try and seem more unique and sophisticated while Annie did it to try and sound more American.
I also wanted to address the quote I put in the header, which is more of a general thing about the character than a specific moment. Like Birdie, Alix is a character who tells herself a lot of stories to protect herself against criticism. In Alix's case, it's also about denying that she's harmed people, because even to herself she can't handle that guilt.
3. Misty Quigley from Yellowjackets
Misty <3 We're moving into real Unhinged Lady territory here. I actually got Jackie on that character quiz, which you would expect from a character who's kind of a queen bee, but I think what's important here is that Annie isn't a queen bee, she's just trying really hard to be. Misty is the prototypical nerd, but she fights her way into the spaces she wants to be in through sheer force of will. She doesn't play soccer, but she gets on the team by becoming the equipment manager. And in the wilderness, she makes herself indispensable through her medical knowledge.
I chose Misty's Citizen Detective moment because I thought it tied in with Annie's arc on the Squire, how both of them are nosy but it's mostly because they are lonely and want to be a part of something. I also wanted to highlight this moment because Annie can be quite aggressive and borderline violent sometimes lol and I think she gets a lot of joy out of "coaching" someone the way she sometimes gives Toby pep talks.
4. Siobhan "Shiv" Roy from Succession
Look you knew I was gonna talk about Shivvy didn't you? The scene I picked is from a really intense fight she's having with Tom, they're like literally on the verge of breaking up because due to complicated plot things Tom has betrayed Shiv and they just weren't talking about it but now they're finally airing all of it out there. And they get to the end and Shiv, who has been saying really horrible things to Tom, just breaks down and says, "Well, that's not a very nice thing to say, is it?" It's in response to Tom saying she wouldn't make a good mother.
And I think this moment is so Annie because she really does put on this tough girl energy, and once in a while she even fake cries to get what she wants, but deep down, she is just a sensitive, wounded person and if you hit her in the right place and at the right time she will break down. Which leads me also to point out episode 4.1 when she is scheduling breaks in her schedule to cry and insisting to her brothers that she is fine meanwhile her husband and father are conspiring against each other together to screw her over further if she goes through with divorcing Tom. Because she is that averse to show people her true feelings! And yet she cannot push them down forever!
5. Daphne Sullivan, The White Lotus
The thing I loved about the Sullivans is that when you meet them, you think they are just your typical vapid rich people, and then you realize they have an incredibly fucked-up relationship, and then you think maybe they're kind of onto something in a weird way (is that bad to say lol). Daphne continues this thread of the tough-girl-who's above-needing-love, and I think her weird little jealousy game with her husband is the perfect example of that.
But I also think, like the other examples, deep down under the surface of Daphne is a sad, romantic person who does want love, and I think in the iconic moment before she leads Will off to the cave where they ostensibly hook up, her heart does break to learn that her husband may have slept with Harper. Partially because Harper has betrayed her, but also partially because maybe she thought this time would be different. But she holds her tears in and gets her revenge, and that's kind of Annie's whole thing.

November 15 -- NPC Playlist!
Tabitha "Tibby" Patts: songs to be an angsty teenager to
Teenagers - My Chemical Romance
She's Kinda Hot - 5 Seconds of Summer
brutal - Olivia Rodrigo
Fuck You - Lily Allen
I wanted to split Tibby's playlist into three parts because as I started putting it together it seemed like there were three clear genres of song in this playlist. The first part is songs that are provocative, and which might be found on a teenage girl's playlist just to piss off her parents, or alternatively because being a teenager sucks actual ass and sometimes you need to swear and shout and headbang along to very loud music
Just A Girl - No Doubt
Devil Town - Cavetown
i wanna be your girlfriend - girl in red
Black Sheep (Brie Larson Vocals) - Metric
The next genre I found was the type of music you put on when you're in your mid-to-late teens and adulthood is fast approaching (or so it seems) and you lie in bed at night entirely overwhelmed by feelings, especially when you don't really have anywhere to put them. I feel like Just A Girl can jump between the first and second categories but I'm tryna keep things even lmao
Homemade Dynamite (feat Khalid, Post Malone, SZA) - Lorde
Sunflower (Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse) - Post Malone, Swae Lee
Don't Feel Like Crying - Sigrid
Our Own House - MisterWives
And finally I feel like the last category is sort of reflective of actually, being a teenager isn't all shit all of the time, and sometimes you go out with your friends and you experience new things and you're young and having fun and things are great, in fact

“Let me look at you-” She took a step forwards. In that moment, he was just her Bullseye again, fiddling with his hat and looking nervous in that way that made him want to tell the others to leave him alone already.
“I prob'ly ain’t changed much,” he mumbled."

Wednesday, November 1 -- Villanelle Poem
tw for illusions to child abuse
if you're gone in the morning it's fine it was enough to have you there at all and i'll remember it well, your hand in mine
sneak in through the window in vanishing sunshine the cover of darkness is the best time to fall but if you're gone in the morning it's fine
black eyes and bruises; you hold out a lifeline you pull me away from the downstairs brawl and i'll remember it well, your hand in mine
and quickly, then quicker, something divine swapped secrets and touches with every call but if you're gone in the morning, it's fine
and then you're gone, out of nowhere; you leave me a sign apologies and promises, written in scrawl all that's left now is memories of your hand in mine
but i'm still there with you, together, entwined best friends, lovers; words are too small so if you're gone in the morning, it's fine because i'll remember it well, your hand in mine

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
Mrs. Pepa Bennet knew this truth most keenly and the morning she learned Netherfield Park had been let, she excitedly turned to her husband with the most wonderful news. It was decided then and there by Mrs. Pepa that one of her lovely daughters — sweet Holley, witty Drizella, or passionate Alana — would marry Mr. Mason Bingley Pines.

A Lingering Kiss
Tags: Alador Blight/Darius Deamonne, Aladarius, Good Parent Darius Deamonne, Divorce, Dorks In Love, Wholesome, Not the Step-Dad the Dad Who Stepped Up, One Big Happy Family, You're Getting Adopted and You're Getting Adopted and You're Getting Adopted, And it was All a Dream, No Beta We Die Like Men
Darius was used to cleaning up other people's spaces. In fact, he was quite infamous for it. The apartment that Alador had gotten for himself was decent enough. At the very least, Darius could stand to sleep over without having a panic attack. But this was mostly because he did the cleaning.
And he did the cleaning.
And he did the cleaning again.
"Darius?"
The Head Witch looked up to find Alador standing in the doorway, two bags full of snacks in his hands. He was looking to Darius with concern.
"Yeah?"
"You were wiping down that counter when I left." Darius looked down at the counter, blinking as if he hadn't noticed.
"Oh. Well you weren't really gone that long," he replied with a shrug.
"I was gone for a half hour," Alador asserted.
"Oh," Darius repeated. He paused for a moment before shrugging, moving over to wipe down the next thing. "Well it's not like that was the only thing I was doing. I just came back because I missed a spot," he explained, now elbows deep in the sink. "I also swept, I cleaned the windows, every inch of the bathroom is spotless, the guest room is completely tidied up and I also re-did the sheets because they came out a bit wrinkled--"
While Darius continued his list, Alador slipped in, closing the door behind him. He entered the kitchen and carefully put the bags in the pantry before approaching the other man and putting a hand on his shoulder. He didn't bother letting him finish.
"Darius," he repeated, more firmly this time. Darius stopped mid-sentence, realizing that he hadn't taken a breath throughout those entire string of words. Inhaling sharply, he replied on the exhale.
"Yeah?"
Alador's thick, dark eyebrows dipped slightly as he offered a sympathetic smile. "Are you doing all this because you're nervous?"
"Of course I'm nervous!" Darius all but shouted back. Feeling guilty for the outburst, he pulled away to begin pacing at the other side of the room. Golden eyes followed him.
"Why?" Alador asked with a chuckle. "It's not like this is your first time meeting them."
"Yes, but before I met them as Darius Deamonne, of the abomination coven. Darius Deamonne, Head Witch. Now I'm meeting them as..." His voice trailed off.
"...Darius Deamonne, their father's boyfriend?" Alador offered. Darius couldn't help the light blush that rose to his cheeks.
"Yes, exactly," he huffed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Alador began to approach again, causing Darius to turn away in embarrassment. He folded his arms and avoided eye contact, wishing the ground would just swallow him up. Despite this, Alador was not deterred, putting a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Are you worried they won't like you?" He asked. Darius couldn't help but bark a laugh in response.
"Honestly, I'm more afraid they will," he admitted. This drew a confused expression from Alador, who squeezed his shoulder in a silent plea to explain.
Darius sighed but continued, "It's just. Odalia has been a nightmare, and even though I know you're trying now, you even admitted yourself that you weren't there enough for them growing up. I know what it's like having parents that weren't always there for you, and how desperately you might want someone else to fill that role. What if they end up looking to me for that? And worse, what if I can't be that for them?"
Alador paused, allowing this to sink in. Then his hand slid down his boyfriend's arm, taking his hand to lead him to the couch in the next room. Together, the two of them sat down. Alador reached out, gently taking Darius's face in both hands to look at him straight on.
"Dar, I want you to know I'm saying this to you with all the love in the world. You're letting your ego get to you," Alador said, causing Darius to balk and recoil in defense.
"Ugh!"
"I'm serious," Alador replied, still with that laugh that Darius couldn't help but melt for, even at his grumpiest. "They're not kids. I mean-- they're kids, but they're young adults. They're not exactly desperate for a father figure, no matter how...complicated their relationship with me or Odalia are."
Darius turned away from Alador once more, leaning back into the couch and crossing his arms. In some ways, that truth stung more than the worries. Or was that just his ego talking?
"What I'm trying to say is no one is expecting anything from you," Alador clarified.
A long sigh escaped his lips before he replied, "And what if I'm expecting something from myself?" His voice was softer now, but there was a frustration and desperation that lined it. He hadn't been planning to say anything else until Alador placed a hand on his thigh, once again looking to him with those pleading eyes that he couldn't say no to.
He sighed again. "I never wanted kids," he admitted, before backtracking, "I mean, I never thought I was cut out for them. My parents didn't know the first thing about raising children, so where was I supposed to learn? I never wanted to mess them up the way they had me," he explained. "And I really don't want to do that to your kids. Especially with everything they've gone through. If their parents are going to start dating again this late in their lives, then they deserve it to have someone they can be comfortable with, someone they feel safe around, someone who makes things better, not worse."
"And you don't think you can be that?" Alador asked gently. A long and heavy silence followed, an answer in and of itself.
Alador nodded in understanding before turning more fully towards Darius. He reached forward and lightly gripped one of his boyfriend's crossed arms, causing them to tense before they dropped. Then he took both of his hands.
"Darius," he began, though there was a pause as he tried to think of the right words. Alador was a quiet, thoughtful man. If he was going to say something, then it was going to be real. "Far be it from me to say what a good father is. I think my past mistakes speak for themselves." His eyes flickered away, flashing with guilt before he brought them back. "But I've seen you guide the younger members of your coven. All the abomination track students at Hexside are always saying your name. Even the young Golden Guard seems to look up to you as something of a mentor." There was an uncomfortable silence, a ghostly figure attached to the title that hung in the air. But Alador didn't shy away from it. "Your parents might not have been great, but it's not like you didn't have any positive influences in your life."
Darius swallowed the lump that was forming in his throat. Before he could reply, a bony hand reached up to cradle his cheek. Darius couldn't help but lean into the touch.
"If you don't want to be a parental figure, you don't have to be. My kids are going to be fine. And if you do, well, then I know you're going to be great. It's going to take time. It's probably going to be uncomfortable for awhile, for all of us, but we'll figure something out. That's what all of this has been, right? Us figuring it out?"
Darius took a deep breath and nodded. "Yeah. You're right."
"Wow, that's big, coming from you," Alador joked wryly. Darius smirked and rolled his eyes before pulling away and going to stand from the couch.
"I know. My giant ego makes it really difficult to admit when I'm wrong," he shot back. Looking at the clock, he said, "It's almost time, they're going to be here soon. Any more words of wisdom?"
Alador put his hands on his thighs to push himself up, groaning at the strain of his aging body. "Well, Ed and Em are definitely going to prank you. It's not malicious, it's more of an initiation if anything. You should be more insulted if they don't," he explained. "But don't worry, I already told them about the misophobia, so they'll stay away from anything with that. They'll have something else, they're creative like that."
Darius's lips tightened in a thinly veiled grimace. "Looking forward to it."
"And Amity's got a whip for a tongue, much like her mother. Unlike her mother, though, her jabs generally come from a place of love. If she's insulting you to her face, then you know you've done good. More likely she'll be silent and broody to start out with, but don't get worried about it. She's just adjusting. We all are."
Darius nodded slowly, taking it all in. His fingers twitched, desperate to grab a cloth and wipe down the coffee table one more time. Sensing the urge, Alador took his hand.
"Darius?" He asked one more time.
"Yeah?" He turned and their eyes met.
"I love you."
Darius's heart fluttered as his lips curled into a genuine smile. "I love you too." They both leaned forward, their lips gently pressing together in a soft and sensual kiss.
---------------
When Darius opened his eyes, he was staring at the darkened ceiling. The phantom of a kiss still lingered on his lips, as if mocking him.
And he deserved to be mocked. A deep shame and embarrassment washed over him as his hands covered his face, unbelieving of his twisted, terrible mind. Here he was dreaming about Alador Blight, ex-friend who he hadn't spoken to in years, married man, and father to children that Darius saw every day on campus. That he undoubtedly would see again in the next few hours when he trudged his way back to work.
A groan passed Darius's lips as he pulled the curtains over his head.
Titan, he really needed to get laid.
...
Ew, no.
He needed the romantic equivalent of getting laid. He needed a gentle touch, a squeeze of his hand, eyes that followed him across the room, and the comforting reassurance that everything was going to be okay.
But more than anything, he wanted to open his eyes and see someone on the other side of a lingering kiss.

Even More Creative Problem Solving
A continuation of Howl and Annie’s Creative Problem Solving Thread in an alternate universe…
Rating: Teen No Archive Warnings Apply
Annie Tremaine/Howl Pendragon, Enemies to Lovers, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence Banter as Foreplay, Belligerent Sexual Tension, Unresolved Sexual Tension, Mind Games, Sexual Fantasies (but pretty PG-13), No Beta We Die Like Men, In Public (but very PG-13), Sexy Staring Contest (this makes sense I promise), I Thought This Would Be Funny But It Ended Up Kinda Hot
@ugly-anastasia
“That is by far the stupidest idea I have ever heard,” Howl said. Normally, Howl would keep a laziness to their voice, but this particular proposition had pissed him off so much that he felt a clipped edge swipe across the tip of his tongue. They narrowed their eyes at Annie Tremaine.
God. Annie Tremaine — this woman. What a presumptive, insufferable, self-absorbed woman! Even though she pretended to be someone of culture, holding her head up high and pouting her pretty pink lips, she just spewed common vulgarities.
And now, as if to piss him off even more, Annie rolled her eyes and tossed her long auburn hair over her shoulder.
“Oh please,” Annie sneered. “Just listen a little harder to the crap you spit out of your own mouth.”
She didn’t think her idea had been that bad! If anything, she thought that she was finally compromising and playing to Howl’s stupidly inflated ego. The sorcerer was so self-absorbed that she just assumed playing the influencer angle would appeal to them.
“You’ve just suggested that I use my social media following to ask for handouts,” said Howl.
“I didn’t say just you! Any other parent with a sizeable following could join. Like me.”
Howl tilted his head back and laughed.
“Oh darling. You really think you’re on my level?”
The way he said that made Annie’s heart clench. She wanted to scream. To yell at them. But at the same time —
Of course Howl had more of a following than she did. They were gorgeous, with silky blonde locks cascading down svelte shoulders. His eyes were bright and blue. She found them staring at her, an inferno of intensity, leaning forward, a challenge in his eyes.
And Annie wasn’t about to back down.
“Wanna bet?” she said.
Howl didn’t know what had gotten into them.
Maybe it was Annie’s cute little idea. Her adorable delusion.
He leaned forward, studying her face, the flush that had risen to her cheeks as she stammered under their gaze. She was pretty, you know, under all that. Somewhere beneath the fake glittery plastic personality and the fabricated Southern accent, there was actually a shrewd, sharp intelligent woman with mesmerizing blue eyes and a delicious grit to her.
Howl saw that spark in her eyes as she shifted closer to him, pretty pink lips curled into a snarl, he knew she’d be a formidable opponent.
He wanted to unravel her, see her come apart at the seams. Maybe that meant rising to the challenge. Maybe that meant parting those pretty pink lips with his tongue to discover how she tasted.
Annie didn’t know what she was doing.
She could feel her heartbeat in her throat. She was so mad. She should just tell Howl to shut up She should just agree to whatever stupid idea he’d come up with, so this whole stupid meeting could be done with and she could go home and take a long bath with a glass of rose.
But at the same time —
Howl locked eyes with her and she felt light-headed.
Not just light-headed. She felt… well…
She felt turned on.
It pissed her off, how turned on she felt. She wanted to slap Howl’s smug smile off his face and then grab his stupid face and kiss him on the mouth. She wanted to pull him across the table and pull him on top of her —
She could feel her cheeks flush.
But she didn’t look away. Because looking away would mean backing down.
And Annie Tremaine didn’t back down.
—
Neither of them spoke.
It became a game. Whoever spoke first would lose. And Howl Pendragon was not a loser. He was a winner, a champion, a victor —
The nervous teacher running the event waved a hand in-between the mere six inches of space between Howl and Annie, immediately snapping both of them out of their staring match.
“Er. Ms. Tremaine? Mr. Pendragon? We’re, uh, about to start the next exercise.”
“Right!” Howl clapped their hands together. “Of course.”
Annie was defiantly looking away at him. Howl did not let that bother him too much. He knew they weren’t done.
This was a dangerous game they were playing now, but Howl had a feeling they were both on the same page when it came to some creative problem solving…
