Tampa and Jacksonville, Florida, USA
I think there was one hostel listed in Orlando.
Tampa, though, was the first place in the States I stayed in a hostel.
I was kind of out of the hostel mode after staying in motels and hotels in Orlando.
I wouldn’t have my own room and would be sharing a kitchen and have to wait for the shower.
It turned out fine as the place I stayed in was fine, but it was a bit of a shock to the system first off.
It brought me back to hostel mode, where you can meet all sorts of characters.
There was a great Canadian couple;
two German guys who were touring the States;
an Australian girl who was a bit of a free spirit, her Australian schoolfriend and his friends who were keen on sticking to themselves but became a bit more cordial when they’d had a drink;
a couple of English guys who were on a grand tour of the States, they had a great story of a couple of American girls they hooked up with in Texas who brought them to a rodeo.
Later a couple of Americans showed up as well. The girl was a hoola hoop fan, her friend who she met along the way from Omaha, reminded me of the brother in law from The Hangover movie.
It sure was a great cast of characters for such a comparatively small hostel.
Tampa turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me.
I had no idea what to expect from the place.
It was my first touch with a more authentic America.
In Orlando I felt a bit disjointed from society.
Even though I was riding the city bus and checking out what there was to see I didn’t feel that I was ‘connecting’.
Maybe Orlando was a bit more 'unreal’ than Tampa, more fake?
In Tampa, when I was walking into town I would pass by shops, offices and houses and the people waiting around the Salvation Army office.
In Tampa I visited the Fire Department Museum
; and the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, well if it sounds pretentious I guess it was, they did have a good exhibition on African photos though.
Before long it was time to leave Tampa.
I was headed for Jacksonville. Why Jacksonville?
Well, why not.
No, the simple answer is that it was still Mardi Gras in New Orleans and the place was pretty much booked out, that’s why I settled on Jacksonville.
I caught the train from Tampa to Jacksonville.
Only trouble was that the train was late, late to arrive in Tampa, late to leave Tampa and late to arrive in Jacksonville.
I’m not sure why the train was late or why it went slow at times when we were on the track to Jacksonville.
We slowed to 5miles an hour at times along the way.
The tracks in the States are owned by the freight companies and they have precedence over Amtrak trains, maybe that’s why.
Along the way we pass level crossings that seem superfluous, with their arms lowered to stop traffic that isn’t there, with flashing lights that flash for no one to see,
because its just us in our tin train for miles around as we go on through the Sunshine State and up the Atlantic seaboard.
We get to Jacksonville around 12.20. I wait to collect my bag.
I grab a taxi. Only trouble is the taxi driver, a man in his 70’s, doesn’t seem to know the way.
I give him the address of the motel I’ve booked.
He asks what’s the best way to get there.
I think that he’s just thinking aloud.
We cross the city and I’m treated to an unscheduled nighttime tour of the city with all the bridges lit up.
Eventually the driver has to stop and ring someone for directions. He confides in me that he used to drive taxis years ago and is trying to get back in on it.
He revises the meter fare downwards and I thank him when we reach my hotel.
I’m in Jacksonville for St. Patrick’s Day, they put on a good show in the city with a concert
and sort of beauty pageant of Hooters employees.
'Our troops overseas’ and 'my mom’ are among their answers to the question of who they admire most.
The judging panel for the contest has among others a professor on it.
Around me people are wearing green and t-shirts in honour of the day that’s in it: 'Born Lucky’, 'The Luck of The Irish’.
After a couple of days I’m off again, this time to New Orleans.

Part 3
“You son of a bitch, I did not see that coming!” Colby laughed, pulling Joe into the biggest hug as soon as he arrived back in Gorilla position. Other members of the roster and crew had gathered to greet him. “Thanks man. I’m so pumped.” Joe smiled, flicking his hair back. Clearly he had been missed and the feeling was mutual. He was so glad to be back.
Joe was finished up having a quick chat with Vince when Jade caught his eye. “Hey,” she smiled. “See, told you your secret would be safe.”
“I appreciate it! Just glad it’s done. Feels like it’s been building up for so long.” Slowly they walked backstage. “I can imagine. You looked great out there. You look...different.’ She mused. Joe pulled a face “Good different or weird?”
“Would you stop worrying. You looked great. I mean, you can tell you’ve been working out a lot.” She rolled her eyes as they came closer to the men’s locker room. “Well, I’ll take that as a compliment then.” Joe flashed a smile. “Great match tonight by the way. You’ve been on fire all Summer.”
“You know me, always trying to up my game.” They stopped at the locker room door. Jade could hear how rowdy it was in there. “Well, I’m gonna make tracks. It’s good to have you back.” A small smile crossed her face before she shuffled off. Joe swallowed, watching momentarily as she left.
Joe had planned to drive straight back to Tampa after the show but a few of the guys had convinced him to come out for a few drinks to the after party. He never really was one for after parties but tonight was special. His phone was blowing up, due to his surprising return and from what he could see on Twitter, everyone was excited that he was back. His mother lived in Orlando so he had given her a heads up that he would stay with her that night.
This was the first night out he’d had in weeks and it was a great chance to catch up with everyone and have some fun. The first couple of hours flew by. Joe had mingled with a few close friends over drinks and was about to leave when someone tapped him on the shoulder. “I didn’t know you were here.” He turned around to see Jade holding a glass of wine. He smiled, casually looking her over. She was wearing a strapless black dress and her long brown hair was tied back in a sleek ponytail. She looked classy, with minimal makeup. “I wasn’t planning on it but a few of the guys twisted my arm. My mom lives in Altamonte Springs so I’ll stay with her. “That’s right near me.” She nodded. “You having a good night?”
“I’m not much of a partier, more of a home body.” She started causing Joe to smile “I know, lame right?”
“No, not at all. I’m about to head myself. It’s been a long day.” Joe observed the crowded room before settling his eyes on her. “It can be a pain sometimes getting a taxi in this city so you can share with me if you want?”
“Your over protective boyfriend not picking you up?” Joe joked with a smile. The expression on her face changed. “No we uh...split up a few months ago.”
“Sorry, I didn’t realise.” Joe started. How awkward. She finished off her drink and shrugged her shoulders. “It’s cool. He was a douche so...”
Joe pursed his lips as he jammed his hands into his pockets. He watched as she took out her phone and then eyed him. “Wanna grab that taxi?”

Chapter Eight
Harry woke up the next morning drowsy and exhausted, but he grinned when he saw Louis still fast asleep beside him. Yesterday Louis and his friends had been in the pit at the show and after the show, they had hung out in the park then went back to Harry's and hung out. They got to know each other in person without a phone screen in the way. Around 10 they had all retired and not wanting to get made fun of or teased he took up big spoon rope since he was bigger than Louis. He was broader and taller so it meant Harry was the big spoon. Just like he had been with his ex a few years back. Harry looked at Louis, studied his sleeping features, and couldn't believe someone so cute and small had such a big personality. He also could remember his softer more childish features from years ago when they were teenagers.
He could still remember the way his whole body stopped working when he saw Louis. He had been 14, almost 15, and had just come out to his family a few days prior. Then there he was kissing and snogging for the first time with Louis in a closed-off hall after obviously flirting and staring on both sides. It was a perfect kiss too just like yesterday’s, well except it was a lot more awkward since Harry was 14 and never kissed anyone. No wonder Harry felt an instant connection to Louis, they felt an instant connection to each other. They had met so many times prior that Harry would believe in soulmates at this point.
Harry climbed out of bed after kissing Louis' cheek then walked into his closet. He grabbed some clothes for the day then headed to the bathroom to start his morning routine. Afterward, he headed downstairs and started on breakfast hoping he had his heart-shaped waffle iron here and didn't take it somewhere else. Finding it under his many many skillets he plugged it in then got to work on the waffle mix. Minutes later he was flipping the waffle iron to start the cooking when he felt arms wrap around his waist from behind and he grinned.
"Good morning Lou." Louis hummed as Harry turned in his arms and wrapped his arm around Louis' shoulders.
"I feel exhausted even though we slept for like...10 hours."
"That's the jet leg hitting you. You just need a bit of breakfast, some fresh air, and something to do to distract yourself from it. It'll go away in a few hours. Probably around 12."
"Damn and here I thought we missed the jet leg when we took a flight that would let us sleep to get adjusted to the time zone change."
"You beat the worst of it. That's always the best way to travel so you're able to sleep and wake up to the city's morning. I'm surprised you guys thought of it."
"Liam, Niall, and Zayn planned it." Louis told him as he sat on the countertop as Harry went to go get the bacon from the fridge.
"So what do you want to do today? There's Universal, Disney, a zoo, an aquarium, museums, there are a few beaches not far from Orlando. Or we can just stay here, I have an indoor and outdoor pool, a game room, tons of movies with a movie room in the basement. Tampa is only an hour and a half drive as well. How do you want to spend our first Valentine's day together?"
"How about we just explore the town and see what we find to do. You can take me to the places you go to when you're here."
"I actually don't stay in Orlando that much unless I have shows here. I bought the house when I was 19 and was dating my ex. We went to Universal a lot together so much so that he convinced me it was a good idea to buy a house here. Of course, now I know it was because he needed somewhere to cheat on me that wasn't my LA home. For obvious reasons. If I wasn't in Manchester then I was in LA and he lived in LA so I stayed there a lot. Whenever he came to visit family or cheat I went home to visit my family."
"He made you buy a home in Orlando so he could cheat on you?" Louis asked
"Well, his reasoning was because we went to Universal so much because he liked it but yeah it was also to cheat."
"Did he tell you he cheated when you broke up?"
"No, actually I found out when I came to Orlando and walked inside my room to see him fucking a girl in my bed. I knew he was bisexual, but his reasoning was because I wasn't having sex with him even though we had been together for quite a long time actually. Also since it wasn't a guy he wasn't technically cheating."
"Please tell me you dumped him after that."
"Actually no. I stayed with him for another six months and in those six months I had been guilt tripped each time he was hard into giving him a hand or blow job. I broke up with him when he tried to talk me into having sex with him before I was ready. He had been pushing it for a month and this particular time he just wasn't taking no for an answer. I realized what he was doing. I told him to grab his stuff and leave." Harry told Louis who stared at him
"Who stayed with someone who cheated on you then was manipulated and talked into performing sexual acts because he didn't want to wank in a shower? What a dick head. I am- if someone has ever done that to one of my sisters I'd have murdered him. If he still alive because your sister is scary."
"She doesn't know what happened. Well, she knows it was because I wouldn't have sex with him, but not everything." Louis wrapped his arms and legs around Harry and pulled him in close to his body, Harry's hands falling to his hips smiling at him.
"Well just know that he was an asshole and a selfish prick and I never want you to feel obligated to do anything you don't want to. Because trust me I get hard pretty easily, but that doesn't mean I am going to pressure you in any way. I forced myself my first time, I wanted to get over with and I regretted it minutes later. I wasn't ready but I was 18 and I had convinced myself and forced myself to go through with it when I was drunk at the pub. It was in a dirty dingy bathroom with spit, water, and precum as lube, and never again will I trust a guy who said 'Relax I got this' with his hands down my pants. My dick and ass were sore for days because of the dryness. So trust me when I say if you ever feel ready with me I will be sure to make it very very special and memorable and you will be the most comfortable person ever. No matter what position we take."

I, unfortunately, came into fame as a virgin, and also my first boyfriend was a manipulative verbally abusive ass. So it's harder to trust anyone, believe me, there have been times when I've wanted to just get it over with too, but you don't know who to trust anymore. The media offers people money for a story, even if it's not true. I trust you though. I've always felt you to be trustworthy and honest. I'm not worried about you going off to any media outlet that offers you money, which is why I refused to make you sign an NDA when my lawyer and label wanted you to when we started face timing."
"I can sign an NDA-"
"No. I trust you. Besides if you were going to say anything you'd have done it by now. You have enough information to make a few million."
"Really? I don't have that much that isn't exactly common knowledge." Louis said
"You have enough." Harry said with a shrug as he moved to out a skillet on the stove to start the bacon as the waffle maker timer went off.
"Want my help?"
"Please tell him no. We would like it to be edible." Liam said as he and Zayn walked into the room with Niall following only moments later
"I got it. Go sit with your friends then after breakfast we'll leave for town. We'll explore together."
"Sounds good." Louis said, leaning over to press a kiss to Harry's cheek before jumping down and sitting on a stool, "So what are you lads doing today?" Louis asked his mates
"Us three have a taxi coming in an hour so it can take us to a car rental since it was closed yesterday when we landed." Zayn said
"I have three cars in the garage you can drive. A 2013 Audi S8, a 2011 Mercedes SLK, and a 2011 range rover. Then my car that I'll be taking today is a 2015 Audi A5. My newer car that I bought for my 21st birthday."
"Are you sure you want them to drive? They're not the best-"
"Excuse you. Who has an accident here and who doesn't?" Liam said looking st Louis
"An accident that wasn't my fault. He hit me when I was parked."
"Still an accident." Liam said
"I'll put you guys on my insurance for the week, it's not that big of a deal. If anything happens it's not like I can't afford it. I hardly drive them anyway. I drive my new Audi and my new Range Rover all the time. I've sold most of my other ones and I've been meaning to sell these three. I just keep forgetting about them. The keys are up on the key hanger in the front entrance." Harry said with a shrug
"Are you sure?" Niall asked
"I'm positive. Rental cars are a pain in the ass don't even bother. They require so much and for international travelers like you guys it could take hours before you're approved. So just take one of mine."

After a wonderful breakfast of heart-shaped waffles and bacon for everyone Louis took a shower and got dressed in black skinnies and one of his graphic tees the boys gave him over the years. It has a graphic of a vanilla cone and on the shirt, it read "vanilla is for ice cream". Louis loved this shirt and didn't think much of it as he pulled it on then headed downstairs. The front door was opened and when Louis stepped outside he saw the garage was opened. He headed inside and saw all four shiny cars well taken care of and all of his mates in one of the three cars mentioned while Harry leaned against an Audi.
"Niall is going out on his own so he isn't third-wheeling anyone so I'm letting him pick the car first much to Zayn's disappointment."
"Niall can come with us."
"I offered, but I think he just wants to explore on his own. Is he ever away from you three?"
"Not really. Zayn and Liam have monthly date nights and they've been busy planning their wedding. So it's been very coupley at the house."
"The wedding is what..three months away now?"
"Yeah. May 14 to be exact. You're invited by the way, as my plus one if you want to come."
"They told me I was invited, they actually asked if I would sing their first dance song for them then I told them I can ask Ed himself to do it and they got excited. So remind me to call Ed in a few hours, I want to get him before he goes to sleep as it's only 5 in London."
"Sure so about 3?"
"Yeah, about 3 or 4. Around the time we end our exploration and go to the shops to get groceries for our romantic dinner tonight."
"Sounds good."
"Well, are we ready to go? The lad knows to lock up before they leave, they have the codes for the security box outside, and they have a house key. Also, they each have mine and my security team's number should they need anything. As well as copies of insurance cards."
"Already?"
"Paper temporary ones. You have one too in my glove box but figured since I'll be driving for now you won't need it right away."
"Then yeah I'm if you're ready." Harry pushed off from the car and opened the passenger side door letting Louis into the car before closing it once Louis was settled in the seat.

Attractions in Gainesville Florida
Located on the sunny shores of historic Lake Lanier, Gainesville is a fast growing University town. Making plans
I don’t to make too many plans on any part of my travels.
Some travellers I meet plan everything down to the last detail.
Whether because they’re limited by time and want to make the most of their time or just because they plan everything.
Some take itineraries from their guidebooks and stick to them as if living by tenets.
Whether by laziness or not wishing to plan everything I limit my plan making.
When I got to Florida I had a sort of rough plan that I could go from Orlando to the Florida Keys
with a couple of stops along the way and make it to New Orleans for my train trip across the States to LA, which I had booked in advance.
It would have meant that I’d have been moving very fast, one night or two nights in a place.
It would have all been too rushed I reasoned eventually and a more limited plan came about.
From Orlando I made my way to Tampa by train.
Before I left Orlando I rode the city busses a bit more.
I was using the busses for transport but I came across all sorts of characters.
One guy who looks sort of homeless boards the bus, but doesn’t have any bags or baggage.
He had dark hair which had the sheen of a cats fur on it. He's Caucasian but looks like he’s been left out in the noon day sun every day for the last 50 odd years of his life.
His moustache has turned mostly gray.
He’s talking to a guy in English.
The guy he’s talking to was speaking in Spanish to some Hispanic kids earlier on the bus.
One of the kids answered his phone during the conversation and spoke in English with a general US accent, but he speaks Spanish with a Latin American accent.
A couple more of the passengers speak to each other.
They seem strangers just speaking to the person next to them.
You wouldn’t get that in Europe I think to myself.
One day I take the bus out to the Mall of America and try to replace the watch that I’ve lost.
In Sears Department Store I watch one of their big TV’s that is tuned in to a News network which is reporting the recent massive earthquake, tsunami and nuclear incident in Japan.
Other customers don’t seem too bothered.
The ready availability of information generally has changed since the days when people huddled around TV store windows to check out the latest on the Cuban Missile Crisis, I guess.
Nevertheless the news is startling, disturbing and upsetting.
The report says that the coast of Japan was moved 8 feet by the quake, the axis of the earth was affected by the power of the earthquake and the day of the earthquake, 11 March 2011, was shorter as a result.
I catch a bus back to town.
I’m too late for the last bus back to my motel, I decide to walk. I follow the map of my bus route map.
It takes me an hour and thirty minutes, the city is quiet and I don’t encounter any trouble.
In a few days I grab a taxi to take me to Orlando Amtrak station when there’s no sign of a bus.
I’m off to Tampa.

The Monday Myth: No Time for a Rest
When you work in broadcasting or content creation, you know you’re in a field that doesn’t cater to the typical 9 to 5 lifestyle. You’re working nights, weekends, holidays, and if you’re at the college level or low minor leagues chances are you’re doing the work of two or three other people. I can also attest even being at the major leagues in a leadership position, there’s not a lot of time to sit back and exhale as you oversee a department and the people who are part of it. But while the work has to get done, and done well, you do need to take a break every now and then.
We discussed a few weeks ago in our Free Advice Friday how to wind down from a busy day with a physical book in your hand, staying away from electronics and other things that prevent your body and specifically your brain from slowing down in to a relaxed stage. But that’s just slowing down... much like once the plane has landed, the “read a book stage” of your day should be like the taxiing to the gate before the brakes get locked and the cabin door opens. Yes it’s a break, but you know that plane will be back up in the air at a later time. This is more about the plane pulling in to the gate, and then being grounded for a while. And before you say you can’t do that, the fact is you need to do that, and acknowledge that you deserve it.
If you work in sports, your days off are often filled with catching up on stuff you pushed off because you’re so busy. This includes (but is not limited to) yard work, laundry, fixing that one thing in the house that’s been broken for 3 months, etc. But when you have that time to truly take off, and do nothing, even if it isn’t for a whole day you need to do it. This is counter to our mindset-- you got in to the business knowing you have to keep moving your feet or else someone will pass you. However, as long as you have the notion that after your pause you will get back on your feet to keep your spot on the racetrack, you’ll be just fine. You’ll discover that the work will still be there, you’ll somehow have plenty of time to get it done, and with a little rest and relaxation you may actually enjoy getting it done when you get around to it.
I actually experienced this phenomenon recently, and it was different from previous times, and a little difficult for me to accept at the moment. In the previous 8 or 10 years, my need for a break came with the usual grind of working for an NHL team, either on the air as a game day host or off the air as my department’s director. Even if it was that rare opportunity to sleep in, or get a massage, or find a way to leave the office an hour early to go to a beach or home and forget about work for a while I did it. But this time I didn’t have that structure of my old job preventing me from relaxing. I had the fear of being lapped holding me back.
As I’m now “self-employed” and working on what’s next in the big picture of my career, I’m constantly staying busy with everything I’m doing, and a couple of weeks ago I was very busy. I was pushing out my daily content on my social media channels, consulting several clients who had hired me to guide them, recording and producing both the Metro Express and Wax Ecstatic podcasts, and driving back and forth from Tampa to Orlando to prepare for my TV color analyst debut on an Orlando Solar Bears broadcast. After a bit of a breather with the family on Sunday, I was back at it on Monday and Tuesday, keeping my schedule open for the second half of the week in case some extra work came down. But by Wednesday, I discovered I had the whole day open. I had worked so diligently and so far ahead, that I had actually created a wide open afternoon for me.
Now when you’re in between jobs and working on what’s next, you’re programmed to KEEP WORKING! After all, you have to find that next short-term gig, sign the next client, keep reaching out to people who can help you find that next long-term full-time opportunity. The wonderful world of freelance is often just as demanding (if not more) than “regular employment”. But at the same time I had that crazy week or so of work, and my cats and kids had woken me and my wife up at 3 in the morning and I couldn’t get back to sleep. I was dead tired, but didn’t want to relax and do nothing because somehow that would ruin everything I had been working so hard for over the previous few days. Even so, I laid down on my living room couch and set my cell phone alarm for 45 minutes. As I closed my eyes, I told myself, “Even God rested on the 7th day”. Sounds corny, but even that thought settled my brain in to realizing that it was perfectly ok to just relax and reset. So I took a nap.
Forty-five minutes later, I woke up. The clients were still there, the opportunities I were working on were still there, the people I needed to connect to still had working email and phones so the conversations continued. Not only did the world keep spinning on its axis, but everything I needed to do could still get done. The nap was the most relaxing 45 minutes of the previous 10 days, and as I coasted through the rest of the day I just reminded myself that I was going back in to overdrive on Thursday. Thanks to that rest, and reassuring thinking that it was perfectly fine to close my eyes for 45 minutes, the work got done on Thursday and Friday as I had hoped it would.
So take that rest, that real rest that is away from your work and electronics and everything else. Close your eyes, breathe deep, and tune out the world for a few minutes. Wake up feeling refreshed, recommitted, and pick up where you left off. You’ve got a lot going on in your world, but sometimes the world needs to wait for you.
