The Grue-Crew follows the cast and crew to Japan for this delightfully silly, yet oddly effective, late 50’s creature feature. The results are part Jekyll and Hyde, part pre-Cronenberg body horror (RE: an eye growing out of the hero’s – or is it the villain’s – shoulder). Don’t let the title fool you, this one deserves a Saturday afternoon Monster-kid viewing. Check out what the Grue-Crew think with episode 159.

The Manster (also known as The Split) will be released on Blu-ray on August 29 via Scream Factory. As its title suggests, the 1959 sci-fi/horror film involves a half man, half monster.
George P. Breakston and Kenneth G. Crane co-direct the creature feature, which stars Peter Dyneley, Jane Hylton, Tetsu Nakamura, and Terri Zimmern.
No special features will be included. The synopsis is below.
Larry Stanford assigned to a story on evolutionary theorist Dr. Suzuki visits his secluded laboratory high in the mountains for Japan. Unwittingly injected with an experimental drug, Stanford becomes increasingly bitter and irritable towards his boss and his wife. Then one day, the appearance of a third eye on his shoulder hurls the reporter into a state of terror. The eye soon develops into a second head setting in motion a rampage of mayhem, madness and murder.

The Manster
The Manster - half man, half monster, all cheese -- an enjoyable monster movie to watch and make fun of on a rainy Saturday afternoon
The Manster (1959) starring Peter Dyneley, Jane Hylton, Tetsu Nakamura, Terri Zimmern
The Manster is a low-budget horror movie, based in Japan, where the stereotypical amoral mad scientist, Dr. Robert Suzuki (Tetsu Nakamura) starts off the movie by destroying a hideously mutated creature, that used to be human — in fact, his own brother, setting the doctor’s character for the audience: putting…

NYC Chinese eatery heats up cultural appropriation debate
A New York City restaurant owner who touted her “clean” American-Chinese cuisine and derided Chinese dishes as swimming in “globs of processed butter,” sodium and MSG is renewing the long-simmering debate about stereotyping and cultural appropriation in the restaurant world.
Arielle Haspel, who is Jewish and a certified health coach, told the dining website Eater that she wanted to offer modified, “clean” versions of typical Chinese menu items. In a now deleted Instagram post, Haspel said that a Chinese noodle dish, lo mein, can make people feel “bloated and icky.”
Online critics pounced, including New York Baohaus restaurateur and author Eddie Huang who dismissed Lucky Lee’s as “the Fyre Fest of food & ‘wellness,”‘ on the restaurant’s Instagram page.
Haspel’s comments are the latest misstep in a succession of restaurateurs and TV chefs who have been criticized for insensitivity when dealing with food from a culture that’s not their own.
Robert Ku, a professor of Asian American studies and food studies at Binghamton University, New York, said Haspel came off as relying on age-old stereotypes of Chinese food being unsanitary or grotesque. It was especially tone-deaf in New York City where most locals regularly eat Chinese food, he added.
“These are long-standing tropes that have followed specifically Chinese food more than any other cuisine,” said Ku, who has written about the cultural politics of Asian food in the U.S. “What she’s focused on is health and being clean, which implies the others were not.”
He also said it’s a myth that Chinese-American restaurants use MSG. Most cut it out of their kitchens in the 1970s because it was so unpopular, making Haspel’s reference problematic, Ku said.
On Tuesday, the restaurant acknowledged the uproar via Instagram and promised to listen and reflect on people’s comments. But it also denied insulting all Chinese food.
“Chinese cuisine is incredibly diverse and comes in many different flavours (usually delicious in our opinion) and health benefits. Every restaurant has the right to tout the positives of its food.”
The restaurant’s owners did not return messages seeking comment.
White TV chefs like Andrew Zimmern and Gordon Ramsay have been skewered for their respective Asian restaurants (both of which also use the adjective “lucky” in their name).
Zimmern last year said in an interview that his Lucky Cricket restaurant in Minnesota was saving the souls of people who dine at “(expletive) restaurants masquerading as Chinese food” in the Midwest. The “Bizarre Foods” host later apologized.
Ramsay, who is British, is opening the Japanese-inspired Lucky Cat restaurant in London this summer. In a press release in February, the “Kitchen Nightmares” star promised a restaurant that would be “revolutionary” and “authentic,” but many noted the lack of Asians in key executive positions.
On the flipside, there are chefs who have earned reputations as visionaries for mixing cuisines. Chef Roy Choi elevated the food truck when his Kogi BBQ hit the streets of Los Angeles in 2008. Choi combined his Korean roots with tortillas and came up with mouthwatering munchies like Korean short rib tacos.
Being against cultural appropriation doesn’t necessarily mean being against anyone cooking outside of their own ethnicity or culture, said Ku, the professor. It’s the line between appropriation and appreciation where things can get tenuous.
“What people are reacting to is saying ‘For generations, Chinese in America were doing stuff but they did it horribly. As a white person, I can do it better,”‘ Ku said.
New York restaurateur Stratis Morfogen, who is of Greek descent, doesn’t worry about the cultural appropriation accusations against his steakhouse for its Chinese-inspired items.
Brooklyn Chop House, which opened last fall, offers cheeseburgers, pastrami and French onion soup encapsulated in Chinese-dumpling form. Morfogen is collaborating with singer Patti LaBelle to bring the dumplings to frozen food aisles later this year, packaged in reusable bamboo steamers.
“If people didn’t move forward or innovate or create and fuse different cultures together, the culinary landscape would be pretty boring,” Morfogen said.
Morfogen employs more than 15 chefs from China across his restaurants and a Chinese chef is also one of his partners. He thinks restaurant owners worried about inadvertently stereotyping just need to think twice before they speak.
“I really believe that those words are insensitive and it hurts people,” Morfogen said. “I don’t think that is what food is meant to be. I think food is meant to bring all the cultures together and respect each other.”

As Twitchy reported, ghoulish lefties immediately jumped on the opportunity to politicize this morning’s tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, that left nearly 30 people dead, most of whom were children. Intel and Under Armour are getting a brand boost after their executives walked out of Trump's manufacturing council
The president’s manufacturing council of business leaders lost three of its members Monday, and a fourth on Tuesday.
The companies, particularly Under Armour and Intel, are being lauded and actually getting a brand boost on social media.
According to data crunched by Brandwatch, 88.6% of the conversation around Intel and 89.4% of the conversation around Under Armour is positive.
More brands are coming forward and distancing themselves from President Trump.
The president’s manufacturing council of business leaders lost three of its members Monday, and a fourth on Tuesday, amid backlash from his failure to strongly condemn the deadly white-supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, this past weekend.
The president offered a stronger condemnation on Monday, but it was too little too late.
"For the vast majority of Americans there is a fine boundary between backlash from political correctness and overt hatred," said Paul Marcum, president at integrated marketing agency Truffle Pig. "Charlottesville — and the president’s response to it — missed that distinction and ended up on the wrong side of that boundary."
The four executives staging a walkout was them being unwilling to give extreme positions cover, said Marcum.
This is in stark contrast to positions that many of them held until very recently. Until now, many of these business leaders have rationalized joining Trump's business councils by saying that they were trying help the president make better decisions about American business, even ignoring backlash.
Under Armour’s Plank, for example, was all praise for Trump in an interview with CNBC’s “Fast Money Halftime Report” back in February, despite the brand being threatened with “mass burnings” of the company’s garments across America.
"He wants to build things. He wants to make bold decisions and be really decisive," Plank had said. "I’m a big fan of people that operate in the world of 'publish and iterate' versus 'think, think, think, think, think,' so there’s a lot that I respect there."
But now, brands seem to be realizing that their advice is largely inconsequential. And that walking out in such a situation is not only the right thing to do, but perhaps just good business.
The companies in question, according to data crunched by social analytics company Brandwatch, are actually getting a boost in brand perception after their walkouts.
Since August 13, Merck has been mentioned more than 344,000 times online, because of departure of its CEO from Trump's American Manufacturing Council. Intel and Under Armour have too been mentioned over 116,000 times and 130,000 times respectively, within the same time period.
Further, the sentiment around the brands is largely positive, with 88.6% of Intel's and 89.4% of Under Armour's conversation being positive.
The only brand with a negative sentiment attached to it is Merck (with 62.9% of its mentions being negative). This is being driven by Trump's criticism on Twitter of Kenneth Frazier and how Merck provides "ripoff drugs.” The only reason it is negative is because people are criticizing Trump for singling out Merck and Frazier and not the other CEOs, and the algorithm can’t decipher that context, according to Brandwatch.
On the other hand, President Trump’s brand seems to have taken a hit. According to Brandwatch, the most used hashtag in the combined conversations around all three companies is #ImpeachTrump. The hashtag has garnered over 33 million impressions.
Still, the brands seem to realize that it is ultimately a fragmented and polarizing issue. So even while leaving, it appears that Intel and Under Armour were trying to avoid backlash as much as possible.
"It certainly appears to be a strategic maneuver from Plank and Krzanich to announce their departure later in the evening when people are looking to relax and stray away from news updates," said Brandwatch’s PR data manager, Kellan Terry. "I’d guess that they hoped their departures wouldn’t garner as much attention later at night, and it’s commonly witnessed on social media that backlash is greatest for the first deviation away from the expected."
