Comfort Character Challenge
Tagged by @ir0n-angel, thank you love. *bonk*
Tagging @fasterpuddytat, @blueboxness, @whataboutbugs, @maculategiraffe and @doomhippy83. No pressure.
Rules: Post your top three comfort characters.
(A comfort character is when a character, which can be from a TV show, game, book etc makes you feel safe and happy when upset, sad, down etc.)
This got long, so I'll put it under a cut.
1 - Sam Gribley, My Side of the Mountain, by Jean George.
Sam is the kid who made good on the promise to run away and live off the land. As a child, this short novel was on constant repeat. To this day, I can read it in a sitting and I've read it aloud to my daughter twice. This book is the one I turn to when I want to relive nostalgia, when I want to remember that I too am a jill-of-all-trades who could live off the land (if not for my back). It formed the impression within me that I wanted to know, to study science and herbology, that I wanted to work with animals and respect them for their place in the natural world. And at the heart of the tale is a 12 year old boy who just wanted to do things his own way, just as I have done my whole life.
2 - Krieg, Borderlands 2.
Tumblr media
This is less about comfort, per se, and more about purging the 'don't you ever just want to go apeshit?' feeling we all get when we're stressed. Borderlands, as a franchise, is my go to for when I need to wreak some serious violence on pixelated things. And my favorite character to do it with is this utterly mad, lab rat of a man who screams incoherently and blows things up with a dynamite studded buzzaxe. Hey, I'm a Gemini, I understand his essential duality of nature or some shit. (Okay, it's more the maniacal laughter he lets out when his kill count gets high.) What can I say? He's relatable.
3 - Kao Ko'Kung, AKA Koko, The Cat Who Series, by Lilian Jackson Braun. (And by extension Yum Yum, his deceptively sweet partner in crime.)
I'm a cat person. I'm sure this is not a surprise to anyone following me for more than a few hours. I've lived with at least one my entire life. I've had as many as 7 at once (that was a lot and I won't do that again). I have seen all manner of behaviors and levels of intelligence from them. Yes, orange cats are himbos.
Anyway...
The Cat Who's are murder mysteries. They follow the adventures of one James Qwilleran (call him Qwill, not Jim), a reporter and eventual reluctant millionaire, and his pair of hyper intelligent, irascibly mischievous Siamese cats who help him solve crimes. Now, I need to put a caveat on this one, because towards the end of her life, Ms. Braun was I think tired of writing the stories, and they suffered in quality for it. I'm not judging; it happens. So for the purposes of Koko being a comfort character, I love the first 8 or 9 books of the series.
When I need a quick read, or something to remind me of better times in my life, I turn to Koko and his innumerable ways of making me laugh, or cry, or shiver with implied horror (murder mysteries, remember?).
