parting thoughts on rhyme anima s2

was it good? no. was it hypmic? also no. did i enjoy the hell out of it anyway? HELL YEAH for the most part

look i don't think it's controversial to say the rhyme anima characterization is eighteen flavors of fucked, but you know what? the blorbos are moving and talking and being silly and that's a fun enough time for me

yeah there are moments of mischaracterization that are egregiously bad, but i guess overall i don't. idk. fully regret watching

really bummed that the 'main' plot is actually quite compelling but just completely misplaced imo. like the whole thing with akira and satoru could have been such a good story on its own, in an original series, while here in the ridiculous clownfest that is rhyme anima it just feels so out of place

i'll never really understand why the anime refuses to just adapt the drama tracks but whatever. it just feels strange and... impractical? to have bits of the 'main' canon sprinkled in here and there with like. zero payoff lol (like what was that glimpse of the ramuda clones that was just NEVER ADDRESSED AGAIN, and are we really not going to let certain people talk to their fathers and a certain other person talk to their mother like hello)

Aiko most of the time is a laidback man, he can be pretty quiet around strangers but he’s usually polite and friendly. He’s became less violent over the years but he used to short tempered in his youth.

Of course if you lay a finger on his sister or his fiancé he’ll knock your damn lights out but that’s besides the point.

Background

Born to a broken home- Aiko is the oldest child in his family. His mother left shortly after his sister turned three years old and his father quickly fell to the bottle.

This unfortunately meant the young boy had to take care of his little sister- often shielding her from the brunt of the suffering he had to bear. He grew extremely protective of her- they only had each other after all.

He took up guitar lessons and learned how to use a turn table in elementary school- finding out he had a gift for music that even he was shocked about

He was considered a delinquent school. He didn’t have many friends his age- his best friend being a girl named Yukiko and her friend Ryoko.

An incident where his sister was almost assaulted was the reason he ended up being sent to military school and eventually joining the navy.

He left the navy shortly before Chuuko took over- an incident scaring him for life.

He did join the DRB as a member of shattered moon- however the group was on rocky ground after the death of the groups leader Ryoko Minamoto.

Due to…unforeseen circumstances he ended up taking the role of leader.

I think it'll be funny if, in one of the BAT anime episodes, they have to battle Hitoya's law rival, like a prosecutor or something, in the court room 😭

The funniest thing they can do (and they’ll never do) is a crossover scene: Hitoya vs Edgeworth.

Jokes aside, since the anime will be set in the future right after the 2nd drb, I think the mood will be a little more serious this time… but maybe we can hope for something like what they did in the stage play with Hitoya rapping during the trial 🧐

okay in my IDEAL world fling posse wins the entire 2nd DRB and there’s a whole big celebration, everyone in japan is watching, and with just fucking,,,,reckless abandon ramuda grabs dice and kisses him & does the same to gentaro, and it’s a mixture of pure adrenaline and overwhelming emotion because they started as just like, a temporary trio united by a common goal i think ramuda put it? but they’ve become so much closer, and there’s so much love between them...i think deep down they all knew they were in love but because of the nature of fp they never really like? acted on it but after a while the realization set in for ramuda that this isn’t some one time fling !! they matter to each other !!!! and surprise assholes you’re in love with each other.

Dating Ramuda Headcanons

THE FP DRAMA TRACK IS HERE AND HHHHHH OH MY GOD I'm sorry for only doing Ramuda when it comes to handcanons but MAN hypmic manages to make him the embodiment of headcanon material. Either way I hope you all enjoy because I had a lot of fun writing this <3

"Optimist" Headcanons

When it comes to dating Ramuda, most of the time it's light-hearted and cheerful

He's always taking you places that revolve around cutesy stuff like getting ice cream covered sundaes or trying on some clothes he made for his seasonal clothing set

For his choice of affection, he highly prefers physical, but doesn't mean he won't go vocal either

Hugs. He gives you a lot of hugs to show his love for you

Whether it be normal or a surprise hug from behind, a hug with a lot of energy put into it or a lazy hug, he's basically glued to you

Sometimes Gentaro and/or Dice will ask how you can manage Ramuda's physical affection all the time

But if you're the type who isn't a fan of physical touch, then he resorts to his second go-to: verbal affection

Ramuda has a lot of nicknames for you, some he uses more than others

Sugar, sweetie, honey, shortcake, and literally any other nickname that rounds around sweets is his main choice

Some nicknames that's he'll use but not as frequent are words like dolly, baby, love, etc.

The list of nicknames he has for you entirely is so widespread it's reward worthy

Like, he calls you a different nickname every day of the week how has he not run out of nicknames yet??

Whether if you prefer physical touch or verbal affection, Ramuda will still do some stuff such as giving you kisses

He's definitely the type to just flood your face with small kisses if you just sit there and let him go wild

As for the other way around, you can do the same stuff to him and he'll love it

Hug him, kiss him, hell even pick him up sometimes and just run away with him in your arms

But the thing you can do that he secretly adores and craves for is praising, I see him as a praise driven individual

Say stuff to him and make it obvious you mean it from the bottom of your heart, he worships it

Call him special, say how much joy he brings in your life, say that he's such an amazing person, call him helpful

That last one will hit him the most, he loves it when you call him helpful or useful

He's not used to hearing this stuff so the more you tell him it, the happier he is

Overall, when in a relationship with Ramuda, the intimacy you two carry for each other is more open and public rather than quiet and hidden

Not only does he feel like this shows people that he's yours, but it manages to remind you two how much you care

"Pessimist" Headcanons

Over time, Ramuda would feel more comfortable with the idea of revealing his true self around you just as he is to Gentaro and Dice

While he still keeps the same happy, go-lucky appearance most of the time, every once in a while he takes a break and shows his real side

These moments are the most critical in your relationship with him, it's these moments that makes his trust and love for you grow tremendously

The fact he can be himself, he can rant, he can generally have a moment to experience expressing his thoughts while also learning about reassurance and encouragement from you makes him have hope

At this point, he's going to hold a special place in his heart for you, and vows to protect you till his dying breath

He may grow to be a bit obsessive, but not to an unhealthy degree. To be honest, he has the right to be when it comes to the people he's close with

When it comes to Dice or Gentaro, he doesn't really care. Yet towards strangers, he's going to be skeptical and stay close to you

As to showing affection, it's remain as physical hugging being the main tactic

But the difference between a hug with his optimistic self and his pessimistic is huge. When he holds on to you, it's clear he wants to stay like that and never let go

The hugs you two share when Ramuda is in a pessimistic state are few but sentimental to not only him but possibly you

Because he makes it clear any hug could be the last at this point. Especially if you were dating anytime in/after the events of Before 2nd DRB

That's another thing he does which only makes him want to be with you more, he makes it clear that death could arrive at his door at any minute. He doesn't openly say it though, but the context in his words lead up to it

Oh the many days you both cried in each other's arms as the worry of losing one another deepens- sorry am I getting angsty,,

If you're an optimist, then you try to be like Gentaro and Dice as you tell him he's gonna be just fine in the end

But if you're also a pessimist, you make it clear you wanna cherish every moment with him while also sadly accepting the possible fate of your boyfriend

Near the end of these moments, you both will hold a tight grip on each other's hand while you confess the never-ending love you two have

On the nights Ramuda opens up to you, you're more likely to stay the night. The idea of leaving is a bit too much for him to bare when it comes to nights like this

Sometimes Ramuda will ask himself if you're even real because of the fact he never thought he'd date or even meet someone as caring as you

But when he wakes up the next morning and finds you snuggling up against him, he tells himself that you surely are real and that he's the luckiest man alive.

Day 20 Bonus: Bad Ass Temple vs Matenrou

I’m just going in order of the battle dates at this point. And I’m just going to go from the music to the character stuff again because I feel it would just get long again. Look, I wanted to go for Bad Ass Temple. Sometimes you want to hope for an underdog. However when it comes to style...I just couldn’t get into BAT as much. Which is a shame because they have the same foundation of their team as MTR and going in the fight a similar way. But in terms of the individual songs, they’re actually pretty even. I didn’t have many songs that I really liked from either side besides One, Two, Law and Black or White.

I feel this is also the time that I have to say, with music a lot of the time, I’m basing it only as music. It’s lyrics and the like are secondary and mainly used to like inch any song forward if I was truly stuck. So sound wise, it’s been all over the place. Between having flashbacks to high school with Jyushi and feel like I’m being taken to church by Jakurai...it’s been a time. But of course the ones I like are the ones that are ultimately the ones about more mundane stuff I guess?

And with the group songs...I had to grow to like Kaigen. It’s just a personal thing with slow build up songs, I don’t usually have patience for them which is why I usually like fast paced songs over ballads (there’s always exceptions). But when you get to it though, it is good. I won’t deny that. (Yosh, Jyushi part and then him going off, is such a fuck yeah moment!) Well, Kirei, Kaigen is more fast paced than Tomoshibi, what gives? There’s always exceptions. One is that Tomoshibi doesn’t have as slow a build and that it caught my heart without me knowing what’s going on. Like a lot of my initially crying over Tomoshibi was over how it SOUNDS, not their lyrics. Also it’s slow but not ballad slow.

Which then brought us to the actual battle. And they would not make us wait. I was gut punched when they let Jakurai and Hitoya go from right out the gate. Anyone else notice how they mirrored each other’s final line of defeating the other with everything they have? Shivers! I initially wondered why these two were put together to fight but it makes sense after Light & Shadow because they have essentially the same ultimate desire of finding safety and growth with their teams but how they go about it is very different. Neither of them are wrong but it’s a matter of the clash between those difference.

If I had one thing that threw me so thoroughly in this battle though was Hitoya. Like I bet he was the real threat of BAT and I don’t feel I was wrong. But his angle was way different from what I was expecting. Like it seemed like his perspective changed before the 2nd DRB happened. Which ends up coming up really strange, at least for me, in this battle. Because HE is the one that initiated a fight with MTR by challenging Jakurai and was determined to take him down. Not that he still isn’t but he’s already had his chance of reflecting and changed why he’s fighting Jakurai from wanting to drag him down from his high horse to wanting to do this as a challenge against himself. Which isn’t bad, it just makes for a strange dynamic when it felt like it was set up for settling this grudge and he settled it himself before even getting on stage.

As for the rest of the battle, I don’t have as many memorable lines as they go so fast in this one. It’s a lot easier to lose them but considering this track was designed like a final boss encounter, I guess that’s to be expected. But overall...I just felt like Kuko and Jyushi were too...not that they didn’t take it serious but too green to this kind of scene? Like it reminds me of Jiro and Saburo in War War War except I think Kuko and Jyushi delivered some great lines such as ‘you’ve been so shaved off by society, there’s nothing left of you.’ But they also didn’t seem to hit with me? Although I guess there is a small bias there as like...I feel weird hearing them say ‘middle-aged men’ when I’m not that much younger than Hifumi or Doppo. And know that it’s really not that old...it reminds me of my younger sister.

Lyric wise, it felt like they were fighting two completely different ways and I don’t know how it worked out honestly for me. Like I’m really glad for the sound because a lot of it...wasn’t nonsensical but just didn’t feel like they were going at the same thing. Like MTR didn’t even seem to really focus on beating down on their opponents whereas BAT did. And it makes for such a weird confrontation. So I basically defaulted to what I usually do with the music and go with how I feel from the music and I felt MTR through it. To me, I felt more passion from their delivery and also I’d be lying if I I was living through Hifumi’s haughty laugh, Kuko’s roll of words and Doppo’s screaming (how does Itou-san do it???).

So yeah, MTR got me with music.

I said I did the character thing because it’d be shorter to do the music...I didn’t realize I had to so much to say about the music until I was writing. I’m so sorry that this just ends up being super long as I add the character/story aspects...which honestly I guess would be shorter because in the grand scheme both BAT and MTR just have a lot less to lose of going against other teams. Which could be argued is their charm but I don’t know if that alone could save them from future shenanigans to happen in this DRB. But let’s get to the team stuff

BAT vs DH would have to be the most even chance music wise for both teams because they’re new to this battle season. Although I am absolutely terrified of what kind of sound would come from mixing their sounds together. I’m sure all the talented folks behind the DRB music can do it...I just can’t imagine it. I can’t really think of the conflicts here since for the most part they don’t know each other outside of Kuko and Sasara being in MCD for a time.

BAT vs BB would be a chance to make the ‘koi yo Bad Ass,’ ‘Ou yo Bus Bros’ from Division Battle Anthem+ come true. I’ve hung onto that direct call out since I’ve heard it. There should be answers to their fall out. Ichiro didn’t forget it and feels like Kuko had to have some kind of revelation with it. This would be the chance to resolve this. Meanwhile I also entertain that this iust good hearted fun of like Ichiro, Kuko, Jyushi and Jiro all being around the same age and just being boys having fun. All the while, Hitoya is groaning as he pulls out another set of adoption papers.

BAT vs FP...I can’t think of anything really since they haven’t had any real connection outside of Ramuda--and I think it was OUR Ramuda--thinking Kuko was too irrelevant for his plans. What a kick that’d be for Kuko to be like ‘so, I heard you were talking shit!’

BAT vs MTC, I also have a problem seeing as much of an issue. Outside of Hitoya trying to not have a whole ass conniption. He needs to bring like most of these bastards to court. And also dadtoya because he would not want to drag Kuko and Jyushi around these guys. I fear of Jyuto eating Jyushi alive. Although there could be a slight chance of anger from Samatoki towards Kuko because he’s one of the few people that know the extent of Kuko’s abrupt departure left with Ichiro and even if he doesn’t forgive Ichiro, I don’t think that erases that nasty taste in his mouth.

And then to reverse around with MTR vs DH, I still think of it being more light-hearted of Hifumi and Doppo being like an accidental rival manzai to Sasara and Rosho. And just ending up petty over it. Watch Hifumi insult Sasara’s suit, ohmygod Hifumi can you not--And meanwhile I’m pretty sure Rei knows that Chuuoku is trying to use Jakurai’s rap ability and I can’t tell if he’s interested in how it goes or if he’d stop it. Because Rei I feel has less hesitance in doing extremes to eliminate what’s in his way. Be that incapacitating Jakurai’s ability or Jakurai himself or ruining Jakurai in a way that he can’t help...that’s all doesn’t seem outside the realm of possibility for Rei to me.

MTR vs BB would also be a lighter affair as it just seems like bros just going against each other as I don’t know, I think MTR has a softer spot for BB than all the other teams. And to BB it’s like going against dad because I will die on the dadkurai hill.

MTR vs MTC is rematch REMATCH. DEATH RESPECT PART II. Let’s get it. But yeah outside of sore feelings from last time, I don’t think it’d be as bad as last time. It’s really a ‘nothing personal but you’re in my way’ sort of thing. There is a meeting for the anti-Honobono club that goes on, maybe? Maybe there could be some bad blood if Samatoki knew about Jakurai thinking of helping Chuuoku with perfecting the thing that, at least for a long time in his head, took Nemu from him.

But unsurprisingly most that would happen is if they did MTR vs FP. Because on one hand, it’s a REMATCH and one I’d personally love because their rap battle was my favorite. But they have the most story threads. I glossed it in the previous but it’s a chance for collaboration or using the other team if Honobono came up. Such as FP throwing MTR at her to distract her from getting Ramuda. They’re cutthroat enough to do it. Or if they could see past their rivalry and work together to save both of their sides from this mutual threat. I think this would be a time for Ramuda and Jakurai to REALLY go at each other.

Because despite their disdain of each other, I don’t think they hate each other as they like to proclaim. Chuuoku seems to know this feeling on Jakurai’s end as they dangle Ramuda’s well-being in front of him time and time again. Even if he can’t get along with Ramuda, he sure as fuck doesn’t want him DEAD. And it seems to get forgotten but Ramuda IS Jakurai’s MENTOR, the person that taught him to survive in the new direction of the world. Even if this was orchestrated, that bond still exists. And it’s not one-sided because I can’t imagine Ramuda being pleased with Jakurai willingly going with the bitches that made his life hell. He’d be pissed as to how Jakurai could roll over to them (as he might perceive) and his effort to keep Jakurai from them failing.

Phew...done...with the thing. But yeah in terms of like story/character....mmm, yeah that would have to go to MTR too. I really don’t feel like it’s BAT fault. I just think they’re at a disadvantage for coming new to a battle season.

HypMic 3rd Western Poll May 2020

Thank you for your participation! These are the final results for the 3rd HypMic unofficial Western fandom poll. After a month of work on this, we’ve got some estimates for general fandom opinions. Do you agree with the general opinions, or disagree? Let us know!

Please click the read more to view our results!

The sample size was limited to 1000 votes, giving a rough indication of the demographic of consumers outside of Japan as well as opinions. The word ‘Western’ has been used, but we have opened this poll to those who were able to read enough English to understand this poll. As such, it is considerably Euro/American-centric.

This poll received the most activity through Twitter, given that the series is most active on that platform. The poll was also posted on Tumblr, Facebook and the HypMic wiki. Commentary has been given on sections of the poll.

Results will be posted on Twitter and Tumblr.

THE CONSUMPTION OF HYPMIC

This section is to be read as ‘What percentage of HypMic English fans have consumed x media?’ The drama tracks and songs have been split by album. Manga bonuses have not been included in the first two questions as at the time of this poll the 2nd Manga songs/dramas were being released so it would be unfair to add them to the poll.

BAT and DH order is written as such due to later stats in the poll where Doppo and Sasara were next to each other but their official colours were too similar so I used the order in Division All Stars songs rather than release order.

Pre-Season: Referring to the start of a battle season.

Battle Season: Referring to the battle/versus songs or dramatracks

1st Manga Bonus Songs: Songs that were included with the manga

DAS Songs: Division All Stars songs - songs that include the whole cast

Merch: Anything that is official HypMic merchandise or has content of HypMic. Plushies, nendoroids, magazines, stickers etc.

Shibuya Division: Fling Posse Drama Tracks and The Loneliness, Tears, and Hope of a Puppet are the most listened to drama tracks of their respective pre-season. Both belong to Fling Posse.

The debut drama tracks of Dotsuitare Honpo (Back Again, Partner) and Bad Ass Temple (The Heart’s Conviction Can’t Be Broken) were listened to less than the other debut drama tracks.

Yokohama Division: MAD TRIGGER CREW Drama Tracks and Chaser from the Past (Matenrou: Before the 2nd DRB) were the least listened to dramatracks of their respective phases of the pre-seasons.

The Champion album has the least listened to drama tracks (Testimony and Me Against the World).

In all cases, the songs have all been listened to more than the respective drama tracks for their album.

The 1st Manga Bonus songs have not been listened as much as the other songs.

This can be due to the fact that these songs cannot be accessed for free legally.

The most listened to songs are the Division All Stars songs with the full cast.

This can be due to the fact that these are the only songs that are available in their entirety on YouTube.

Fling Posse has the most listened to songs of both pre-seasons.

Buster Bros!!! has the least listened to songs of the 1st pre-season and Matenrou has the least listened to songs of the 2nd pre-season.

The Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- side D.H & B.A.T manga was released as the poll was being conducted, so was not included in this poll.

-Before the Battle- The Dirty Dawg is the most read manga. -Division Rap Battle- side B.B & M.T.C is the least read manga.

By the numbers given for listening to the Spotify radio show, Hypnosis Radio, 80.4% of this sample size has listened to the radio - 19.6% have not listened to Hypnosis Radio.

Around half of the fandom has bought merch - this poll has included plushies, magazines etc. and all from official sources.

DEMOGRAPHICS

Due to the limitations of Google sheets, Africa does not show up on the chart for location as the voter percentage is too small.

The age ranges used are of a similar range to those of Japanese polls. [ARB’s recent survey and the age demographics of Comic ZERO-SUM, publisher of the FP/M manga]

93.5% of voters use translations regardless of Japanese comprehension.

The option for ‘I bought multiple CDs’ refers to both different CDs and multiple of the same CD during the battle season.

Of those who were around for the Battle Season, 15.66% of this group did purchase a battle CD.

CHARACTER VOTING

For comparison, here are the rankings from the previous poll (January 2020), From Japan (October 2018) and the Yumejoshi poll (December 2019)

Names marked in GREEN show an increase in vote percentage. Names in RED show a decrease in vote percentage. Names in BLACK show that their popularity rank has not changed. Names in BLUE show the character has been added to the polls through voter suggestion.

1.2% of votes had a minor character as one of their favourite characters (Ichijiku, Nemu and Yotsutsuji - No other minor characters were suggested).

These polls vary in selection method as our polls looked at the top 3 votes of each character.

From Japan’s method has been stated as a poll but we were unable to find the original. Rio and Jiro’s reason for being unranked is unknown.

The Yumejoshi poll was done by people suggesting their favourite characters for rankings, meaning that it was not entirely based upon HypMic. What is shown here are those who ranked. The ranking in their picking of a 100 is listed against them.

These three polls have varying demographics. From Japan’s spread seems to be more broad, while the Yumejoshi poll is specifically yumejoshi/female. Our polls were taken only for English speakers. In addition to this, there is some bias based on who the poll was spread through followers.

For example, the poll was created by a Gentaro stan and main supporters of this poll are Dotsuitare Honpo stans.

Doppo dominates the polls in both English-speaking and the Japanese fandom.

Characters who received less than 1% of the votes are listed as other: Jiro (0.8%), Rio (0.9%), Rosho (0.2%), Rei (0.4%), Hitoya (0.5%)

The only significant change in division rankings shows that Buster Bros!!! are now more popular than MAD TRIGGER CREW.

Dotsuitare Honpo is the lowest in both the favourite division rankings and perceived lyrical skill.

For our final question, we asked “What are your hopes for this battle season? Any plot points, theories etc. that you want to mention.” This question was not required, but we received around 300 answers to this. We condensed the material into basic categories so you don’t have to sort through all 300.

Here are some choice points made about the plot:

What does Samatoki actually think Ichiro did to Nemu?

Could Saburo hack Ramuda?

How will Fling Posse react when they realise what Ramuda’s done to everyone else?

How do the other Ramuda clones interact with each other and everyone else

What if this is all Gentaro’s book?

What if Gentaro’s brother is the original Ramuda clone?

How are Chuo seen by other women?

Would Chuo rig the matches? Especially against Matenrou since their victory

What if they cloned someone else?

What if they reshuffled the divisions? Or added more divisions?

And here are a few funny comments before we go... just cause there were a few silly things added in that made us laugh. Yes, these are all as written.

I haven’t talked about what I think in the Matenrou’s Before the 2nd DRB CD’s drama track... simply because it didn’t leave as shocked or thougthful about the whole setting’s events in comparison to the other three. Probably, also because they handled it the better? as expected for the most adult division of the franchise.

I think two things did surprise me about “reveals” here - one, that I never thought CW had the guts to threat (it was a threat) Jakurai directly about him working for them, unless... Also, it was obvious Matenrou would have some sort of close encounter with BAT, because Hitoya was the one with connections with Jakurai.

It was more or less how I thought it was going to be played, I guess. Except... I suppose Doppo doesn’t have too much to be revealed yet - like, of course he knows what happened to Hifumi and his gynophobia, but... ??? Probably it isn’t really that deep, I just want to know what happened in that previous encounter he had with Jyuto, and why Jyuto is wondering he looks different (according to the few last chapters of the BB & MTC side manga).

What I do find interesting is that, there wasn’t any mention of Jakurai being a hitman or the like, as previously established in the BTB manga. We do know he and Hitoya went to medicine school together until Hitoya decided to let go because he is in constant competition with Jakurai’s skills.

But there’s also the whole “oh, welp, I forgot they are in a post WWIII world” so, my big guess? is that Jakurai had to be a hitman during the war or shortly after the war happened. Probably had to take cards on the thing because the implications and circumstances around and as a doctor in the middle of a war zone, well, lots of scary stuff happen, maybe he wasn’t a “killer” or “assassin” or “hitman” and that could have been exaggerated rumors because his moral would have been based on what he saw and who could be saved or not... and with his god-like complex in his skills... well, I guess you may know where I’m going from here.

Also, going by knowing that the Yamada brothers were WWIII’s survivor kids, then the thing would have happened ten years or so when they were really younger (I really don’t remember if we were given an established time period from then to before POW established their power). So, Jakurai would have been in his late teens or early 20s when it happened and he might have been sent to do stuff in the middle of war zones because medicine interns were sent to help as volunteers or smth like that. There’s much to be cut from here, and I’m only guessing around.

I... suppose this might continue with the CD that comes in the limited edition of the guidebook that was announced last week... as it is going to be centered in CW... but GOOD LORD, I wish that CD was more widely available than in a guidebook that I don’t think I am going to be able to grab because *sees around* things are erratic as of lately and I’m not sure if I might even get i*
