Day 60- Film: Europa 51
Release date: September 12th, 1952.
Studio: Lux Film
Genre: Drama, Italian neo-realism
Director: Roberto Rossellini
Producer: Roberto Rossellini, Carlo Ponti, Dino De Laurentiis
Actors: Ingrid Bergman, Alexander Knox
Plot Summary: Affluent Irene lives in Italy with her husband and young son. When her son dies suddenly, and it may have been a suicide, she falls apart. Spending time with her leftwing activist cousin, she starts performing works of charity for the poor, ill, and disadvantaged. This soothes her pain of grief, and the work becomes all-consuming for her. Her family and the authorities, however, come to believe she is mentally ill.
My Rating (out of five stars): ****½
We’ve arrived at our first foreign language film of the project! I added in a couple, but the focus of the project is really Hollywood and mainstream American media. I was excited to see this- Italian neo-realism is one of my favorite film genres. I saw Stromboli in a class years ago, but that is the only Bergman/Rossellini film I’d seen prior to this. Europa 51 is classic neo-realism- gritty and dark, filled with topics Hollywood would never touch, a raw style that gives the genre its name... even the post dubbed sound... I really enjoyed it.
The Good:
Ingrid Bergman. I saw the Italian language version, and she was dubbed by an Italian actress, but even so, you couldn’t take your eyes off of her.
Her husband was played by the doctor in the movie Paula! I knew I had seen him somewhere. He was effective as well, although he was also dubbed by an Italian.
Giulietta Masina! I was thrilled when I saw her name come up in the credits. She’s an actress I absolutely adore- she's so unique and charming. La Strada is always near the top of my favorite films list. She was great in this- very colorful and fun.
The style. As mentioned, it was classic neo-realism, and I loved it.
The topics addressed that would never be in a Hollywood film. Topics like child suicide, prostitutes, a sympathetic guy with communist beliefs, an unwed mother just living her life raising children and enjoying the company of men, religious leaders portrayed in a somewhat negative light... All of these things make the film very modern- way ahead of Hollywood in subject matter.
The way most of the world cannot understand Irene’s total selfless devotion to suffering people. She’s not compelled by either religious or political beliefs... so, by their standards, she must be insane. It’s a very sad indictment of the way those who run society think.
The detailed little snapshots we get of the people Irene is drawn to help- the prostitute with tuberculosis, the unwed mother who takes in orphaned children, the family of a sick little boy, even the family with a criminal for a son.
One of the final shots of the group of people she helped when they came to visit Irene at the hospital. It was very moving.
The digs at the church leaders. The priest who comes to see Irene doesn’t like her full devotion to charity. “We must do good, but carefully as God dictates.” He gave off creepy vibes. Why, as a priest, did it disturb him that she was essentially living like a saint?
The Bad:
Irene could sometimes be drawn as maybe a little too saintly... but then am I just falling a bit into the trap of the society that condemned her?
For such a gritty realistic film with real looking people, the mental hospital she was put in was teeming with very attractive women. It just made me laugh a little.
Sometimes I don’t always love the post recorded and dubbed sound in Italian films of this era, but I’ve also come to appreciate it as a characteristic of neo-realist films.

What are your feelings on the general tonal direction that the dub was given compared to the original?
I had this general feeling that the dub was always attempting way too hard to be funny. Like, jokes seemed to be shoved in at every opportunity. Establishing shot with nothing but the BG playing. Nope got to have a funny intercom moment about a jelly donut in the pool. Scene transition, nope got to have the kids running in the background call back to the donut.
I dunno. It was something that always seemed to bother me in hindsight. It was amusing, but out of place.
Preliminary point of disclaimer: I am absolutely not saying any of the following as an indictment of people who personally prefer the American English dub for any reason; I'm well aware that there's a lot going on in terms of accessibility, reasons of personal sentiment/attachment, and the fact that legally available subtitled versions of the earlier series range from limited accessibility to downright absent. I also fully admit to having my own attachments from the fact that said dub was what I technically got into the franchise via to begin with; I love the voice actors and I also have certain zinger lines from the dub I personally treasure, so please take everything I'm about to say with an understanding that there's a lot of extremely complicated personal sentiments mixed in with it.
I will say that, first of all, which dub we're talking about is important. There's a pretty huge difference between the Adventure/02 dubs and the Tamers/Frontier/Savers ones, and then of course the one for Xros Wars (although I think the majority of the fanbase is pretty critical of that last one, given that the "but my childhood" bias is out of the picture). There's also a mild difference between the Adventure and 02 ones, since the latter is probably the most aggressive in terms of how off-the-rails it could get with its changes (and I am confident in saying that I fully believe this is the case even outside my own bias for 02 as a series). I honestly never really had much to gripe about with Tamers through Savers; I think they were still fairly aggressive with the added jokes, but it wasn't to the level that I'm particularly bothered (even though I generally prefer watching with the Japanese version these days anyway). It's probably a matter of taste. The second 02 movie and the Tamers/Frontier movies were also dubbed during this era, and I have the same to say about those.
Adventure and 02 are a completely different story, and especially in regards to 02. I think added jokes are okay to a certain extent -- again, probably question of taste -- but I have problems when the desire to be funny starts actually cutting into characterization or story integrity. That definitely happened way too many times for my liking in Adventure and 02, and I have a lot of personal misgivings about it, especially since its definition of "funny" often overlapped with "these characters start insulting each other for no reason" to degrees that stop feeling like "comfortable friends" and more just "needlessly malicious". Certain characters (Mimi and Daisuke come most to mind) are very different to the point where I couldn't make sense of their intended character arcs, and actively disliked their characters as a kid for being rude, condescending, and obnoxious before I watched the Japanese version and realized how different they were. (I give my regards to everyone who saw the potential in them with the dub only, of which there are many, but please understand that I am not the only person in this camp, and that I feel the changes most certainly led to a statistical increase in people disliking them.) In the case of 02, I also think the insistence on being reckless about the changes adversely impacted the story and character arcs overall because a lot of things that were meant to be consistent in Japanese stopped making sense, a lot of the emotional depth and range of the characters got stripped out to make said jokes -- hard to believe Daisuke's nearly as emotionally pained and impacted at times when a joke has to be added in there, especially when most of his lines in the first half involve him dunking on others and others dunking on him for comedy purposes -- and in general, I'm not against adding jokes per se, but there are times I just really wish it could have learned to hold it back just once during some very important scenes that have vital story and character importance. I am personally very positive that this only contributed further to the stigma of 02 being a poorly written series with inconsistent character and story writing, especially when there was a lot of nuance lost in said character arcs.
I'm not a localization purist. I don't think changes are inherently bad. I'm fully aware that things were very different back then, and at the time it was considered that making those changes may have been necessary to reach the Anglosphere market. I don't personally know if it was actually true; nearly every other country got a significantly more accurate dub and they seem to be fine (and they're currently side-eyeing the Americans for being so weird about it, and I can't say I blame them for it, especially when Anglosphere fanbase denizens have this awful entitled attitude about acting like other dubs are lesser and that somehow "but my childhood" only applies if you've seen in American English, never mind that other people have childhoods too and the Southeast Asian English dub also exists). I wonder if it's really a good thing in the long run for Americans to be pinned as people who can't enjoy something unless you add a million jokes. I'm also disturbed by the fact a lot of people gave and still give passes to some sentiments that often feel like downright anti-Asian motives when it comes to dub changes, just because "my childhood". I completely understand that localization means that you have to alter certain cultural things lest they become difficult to relate to or understand, I cannot say I'm on board with the fact these kinds of dubs were and are often so aggressive about it that they feel like they're pathologically trying to scrub out the Asian scourge. I don't have any particular grudges against the dubbing staff for what they did on an individual level because, as someone who doesn't work in the localization industry, I don't know what pressures they had or what they had to consider in marketing this product, I think everyone has the right to judge which version of the product they prefer for themselves; I just am really uncomfortable with what kind of sentiment fuels the idea that these changes were necessary in the first place, I dislike the fact that I can't voice my concerns without being treated like I'm insulting a sacred cow, and I'm a bit frustrated that the "the dub didn't change anything significant" is still such a pervasive sentiment in this fanbase after 20 years, making discussion of this issue difficult and discussion of the series itself unproductive when we keep running into two people "arguing" about what's actually two very different things.

Jehovah’s Witness Founder, Charles Taze Russell
Charles Taze Russell became born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania,
1852. His dad and mom were religious Presbyterians. Dad owned several guys’ furnishing shops in Pittsburgh, where the circle of relatives moved early in Charles’ existence. He joined his father in this organization and turned into nicely on his manner to monetary achievement, while a teen.
Equally disciplined in his nonsecular existence, at age 13, he left the Presbyterians for the Congregationalists.
Three years later, nevertheless attempting to find the ultimate Biblical truth, he started out to impeach the reliability of Scripture after a now not-so-successful debate with a friend. Russell questioned far away from his Christian roots for some time, even dabbling in rap religions.
Then at age 18, he encountered the Adventists. It’s miles well worth a prevent here to research once more just what that precise group adhered to in Charles’ day.
Enter Adventism
Adventism sprang from the second Splendid Awakening of the early 1890’s. William Miller became among the leaders of this new movement, which we still have with us these days, extensively within the form of the seventh-day group.
22 million humans remember themselves “Adventists” in our day.
It becomes here, and not just in his very own head or his very own Bible looking, that Mr. Russell picked up a number of his mistakes. Though the Adventists have much upon which they agree, there has been and is tons on the other facet of the ledger. They’ve debated subjects along with the country of the soul after dying, annihilation vs everlasting torment, the resurrection of the wicked, the observance of the Sabbath.
However of the path, the primary different of this movement had to do with the appearance or Coming, of Christ to Earth. Date-putting becomes accepted and of direction always wrong. Even if it turned into incorrect, and obviously so, movement leaders ought to persuade the sheep that something considerable had occurred on that day. Possibly Jesus came spiritually, invisibly, Even though He had not regarded in Frame.
Such was the case on October 22, 1844, the “certain-fire” date for the approaching of Jesus. plenty unhappiness abounded on October 23 of that 12 months.
Millerites divided up after that point, and changed their basic call to “Adventists”. But there were 7th-day Adventists, (as Ms. White and enterprise have been called), First-day Adventists, Spiritualizer Adventists.
My Husband Feels Responsible, But Now not Remorseful, Approximately The Affair – What is the Difference?
Most each spouse I understand (or have known) who’s handling a cheating husband wants him to experience both regret and guilt. The better halves want those emotions because they feel that he merits to experience badly and they wish that these feelings imply that he might think twice Approximately dishonest once more.
However, it’s miles regularly like pulling enamel to get a person to confess to feeling those feelings. People who’ve affairs often experience a want to justify them. So that you may additionally get him to confess some matters, However, he’s going to often prevent quick of saying every emotion which you would love for him to sense.
An example is a husband who might admit to feeling guilt, However who insists that he has no regret. Here is what I suggest. A woman might say:
It has truly taken me About 3 weeks to get my husband to admit to feeling any guilt in any respect About having an affair. This blows my mind. There are times when I just can’t trust it. How will you Now not feel completely beaten with the aid of the know-how which you did this terrible thing to your partner? Besides, my husband will finally admit that he does sense Responsible due to the fact he is familiar with that cheating in a standard is a pretty deplorable factor to do. However once I press him on whether he feels remorse, he says that he does Now not. I ask him how you could feel guilt and Now not remorse,
On the grounds that they’re emotions that seem to move hand-in-hand and are so carefully related. He says that the feelings are very different.
He says that he theoretically knows that cheating is inaccurate – for that reason the guilt. However, he also says that the connection did offer him a few things that he wished for the time. And he said that during its own manner, the affair becomes a special relationship that he would Not have desired to skip up. He says that although it is Maximum absolutely over, it modified him for the better in some methods. What am I supposed to do with this? He claims that he desires to keep our marriage, However, without him feeling regret and remorse, I’m Now not certain how we’re ever going to make it. Is it even possible?”
Remember the fact that His Wondering Could be very Mistaken. However, It additionally may additionally Exchange
I assume that saving the marriage is feasible – at least ultimately. I think that your husband may make a few progress in his Wondering, However, I additionally understand that his concept system is extremely not unusual and in all likelihood ought to Change.
Here is why. As I alluded to earlier in this text, Human beings who have affairs need a life raft of their Wondering. To be able to No longer simply sense complete self-hatred and devastation, they want as a way to justify their movements – at least in their very own minds. They want to agree with that their mistake turned into worth the chance. Otherwise, their behavior would be loopy and self-unfavourable. And nobody desires to assume this way About
Cyprus: Registration of Prices
Costs and mortgages are two gadgets that make certain creditors’ safety. Exactly, all creditors need to ensure that they’ll get hold of charge for their services or that their loan might be repaid. Expenses provide the proper to lenders to lodge to recognized property, immovable property or non-public belongings, for you to satisfy the debt or other legal responsibility on the case it has now not been paid. It needs to be taken into consideration that neither ownership nor possession passes to the creditor. Then again, under a mortgage of immovable or non-public property, the mortgagor possesses the mortgaged assets. in the case that the debt has now not been repaid then the creditor obtains title/ownership for the particular property.
A charge is just like a mortgage. Essentially, a rate embraces all of the rights of a mortgagee without shifting possession. Fees may also grow to be a result of an agreement or with the aid of operation of law. It must be clarified that explicit Charges may be either constant or floating. A set fee is created over certain assets. Regarding immovable belongings, a specific charge is still known as “mortgage”. However, a specific fee has substituted the use of the conventional loan.
Except for immovable property and capital property, constant Expenses aren’t carried out to assets such as products in view that there are often being changed. In this situation, constant Costs need to be usually created and launched which isn’t always sensible. On the other hand, a “floating” charge may be created over all of the assets of the organization sometimes, or maybe one class of belongings, i.E. inventory in change.
In Cyprus, registration of Expenses is regulated via the “The Organizations regulation” (Cap. 113). Especially, the provisions of sections 90(1) and ninety(2) of the Companies regulation cover all the essential strategies that want to be observed in order that to continue with registration of Charges. According to Section 90(1), Costs need to be registered with the Registrar of Groups. If they’re no longer registered, they may be not legitimate.my kohls charge
The base at the provisions of Phase 90(2) the Phase ninety(1) applies to the subsequent Costs:

Hackers Are Breaking Directly Into Telecom Companies to Take Over Customer Phone Numbers
Hackers are now getting telecom employees to run software that lets the hackers directly reach into the internal systems of U.S. telecom companies to take over customer cell phone numbers, Motherboard has learned. Multiple sources in and familiar with the SIM swapping community as well as screenshots shared with Motherboard suggest at least AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint have been impacted.
This is an escalation in the world of SIM swapping, in which hackers take over a target's phone number so they can then access email, social media, or cryptocurrency accounts. Previously, these hackers have bribed telecom employees to perform SIM swaps or tricked workers to do so by impersonating legitimate customers over the phone or in person. Now, hackers are breaking into telecom companies, albeit crudely, to do the SIM swapping themselves.
Motherboard's findings come as multiple Senators and Representatives wrote to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai on Thursday asking what the FCC is doing to protect consumers from the ongoing wave of SIM swapping attacks. An indictment unsealed this week in New York alleges a 22-year-old stole $23 million worth of cryptocurrency through SIM swapping.
"Some employees and managers are absolute brain dead and give us access to everything they own and that's when we start stealing," one SIM swapper said. Motherboard granted the SIM swapper anonymity to talk more openly about criminal practices.
Do you know anything else about SIM swapping? We'd love to hear from you. Using a non-work phone or computer, you can contact Joseph Cox securely on Signal on +44 20 8133 5190, Wickr on josephcox, OTR chat on [email protected], or email [email protected].
The technique uses Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) software. RDP lets a user control a computer over the internet rather than being physically in front of it. It's commonly used for legitimate purposes such as customer support. But scammers also make heavy use of RDP. In an age-old scam, a fraudster will phone an ordinary consumer and tell them their computer is infected with malware. To fix the issue, the victim needs to enable RDP and let the fake customer support representative into their machine. From here, the scammer could do all sorts of things, such as logging into online bank accounts and stealing funds.
This use of RDP is essentially what SIM swappers are now doing. But instead of targeting consumers, they're tricking telecom employees to install or activate RDP software, and then remotely reaching into the company's systems to SIM swap individuals.
The process starts with convincing an employee in a telecom company's customer support center to run or install RDP software. The active SIM swapper said they provide an employee with something akin to an employee ID, "and they believe it." Hackers may also convince employees to provide credentials to a RDP service if they already use it.
Once RDP is enabled, "They RDP into the store or call center [computer] […] and mess around on the employees' computers including using tools," said Nicholas Ceraolo, an independent security researcher who first flagged the issue to Motherboard. Motherboard then verified Ceraolo's findings with the active SIM swapper.
"Some employees and managers are absolute brain dead and give us access to everything they own and that's when we start stealing."
Certain employees inside telecom companies have access to tools with the capability to 'port' someone's phone number from one SIM to another. In the case of SIM swapping, this involves moving a victim's number to a SIM card controlled by the hacker; with this in place, the hacker can then receive a victim's two-factor authentication codes or password reset prompts via text message. These include T-Mobile's tool dubbed QuickView; AT&T's is called Opus.
The SIM swapper said one RDP tool used is Splashtop, which says on its website the product is designed to help "remotely support clients' computers and servers."
Ceraolo provided multiple screenshots of this process, one of which appears to show someone logged into a T-Mobile QuickView panel via RDP. Another shows someone using a RDP tool while logged into an AT&T system.
The SIM swapper said, "This works with mostly ever[y] carrier, but as of now I can say T-Mobile and AT&T are the carriers that are used the most."
When asked for comment, an AT&T spokesperson described SIM swappers as "sophisticated criminals and they use a variety of techniques." Sprint confirmed it is aware of SIM swappers using this RDP method.
"This works with mostly ever[y] carrier."
"Yes, we are aware of this technique, but for obvious security purposes, I am not going to detail exactly what controls our teams have in place to thwart fraudulent SIM swaps through this or similar methods," a Sprint spokesperson wrote in an email. "In addition to the system controls we have in place, any time we become aware of harmful techniques being utilized by bad actors or industry wide issues, we alert our frontline reps and refresh them on their training to further help protect our customers."
T-Mobile acknowledged a request for comment but did not provide a statement in time for publication. Verizon did not respond.
On Thursday, Senator Ron Wyden and other lawmakers' letter to the FCC read, “Consumers have no choice but to rely on phone companies to protect them against SIM swaps—and they need to be able to count on the FCC to hold mobile carriers accountable when they fail to secure their systems and thus harm consumers."
