#digimon multi series talk

Note
I love your Digimon meta blog! It's really helped me appreciate the series more and get into it after Ghost Game! I know you focus more on Adventure and 02, but do you know any other blogs, Tumblr or otherwise who also do meta's on Digimon?
Thank you so much!
Hmm, the thing about Digimon meta is that a lot of it is Adventure-biased, not just because of the popularity of Adventure, but also because the Adventure universe is the one with the most lingering questions to address compared to others that are a bit more straightforward. (Believe it or not, even I would probably be covering more than just Adventure and 02 if I could come up with things to talk about, but unfortunately, I'm not actually that creative or smart and struggle to come up with good topics when a huge question isn't shoved in front of my face.) Sadly, we also lost a lot of meta bloggers in the Tumblr exodus some years ago, but off the top of my head I easily remember @analyzingadventure (if at least because the name is easy to remember!), and I've also seen @digisurvive's stuff on Survive floating around.
The thing is, I do know a lot of names around, but I keep forgetting who are the ones who actually specialize in meta and who only posts about that kind of thing occasionally...I'm sorry, I am a terrible excuse for a community member. Please reblog this post and promote yourself if you do meta!
For things outside Tumblr, I really like Data Ravel's Digital World Archive, which talks about the Digimon franchise as an overall multiverse as well as the history of the IP itself. In particular, I like the fact that he's one of the few people who can talk about things like lore contradictions and marketing/financial problems with an academic tone that doesn't feel remotely malicious, and in fact, he treats them like things that make the franchise even more interesting to analyze and think about. So he's probably the only person I can have faith will talk about things like the 02 media mix biting off more than it could chew or Tamers/Frontier's financial problems without sounding like he's attacking them or being condescending, and it really does feel like a true analysis blog rather than something that has to go into media criticism or debating what's better or worse writing. I really appreciate the fact that he treats everything like it has its own place and value, and I feel more people could stand to be that way.

Camp Digimonth 2022 goal
As a chaotic energy, i'm joining @campdigimonth's event this month to find some method in the madness 😩😩
i have a major test mid-month and a class starting the day after tho, so we are setting the super realistic goals of 10-15mins a day before the test, then like 30mins-1hr a day after OR one polished chapter/doodle of anything for posting at the end of the month.
not sure how this is going to go, but looking forward to this and everyone's progress this month ✨ ✨ what a way to start the year
edit: so i couldnt stop thinking about this and need to dump these ideas somewhere so here is a quick idea dump of concepts
multi-chapter Takari-centric fic about Takeru and Hikari finding their place and how to work with that in a world with increasing digimon integration
drabble where Ken and Meiko meet and talk about grief
Takari-centric one-shot where each section is an AU changing one thing from each Adventure series/major film [based on this DCMK CoAi-centric fic]
just continue The familiar series I haven't touched in months
any other one-shot/chapter in a fic or doodle that comes to mind
not sure what's going to happen but we shall see 😩

Recap! Digimon Adventure: (2020): Ending
Tumblr media
In this episode, we wrap up a reboot with so much style and so little substance, then talk about the future because, unlike the Adventure: children, we are mortal beings. As doing so during a currently running series defeated the intention of allowing us a breather, we’ve been slacking off on the catch-up posts that used to happen around every ending change. There wasn’t much to say anyway. By the time the second ending theme ran its course, we’d sniffed out the fatal flaws of the Adventure reboot. A lack of quality wasn’t the issue. Digimon has had plenty of subpar material over the course of twenty-plus years. You can even argue there’s plenty of quality in Adventure:, just invested in places we’re not used to in Digimon, ones that don’t add much besides another shiny, empty thing to gaze at for a few seconds. But as we gaze one more time, we realize the real killer was the lack of anything compelling to think about. Which is a real problem since that’s primarily what we do here. Back in episode four, even as we were enjoying the hell out of Action Girl Sora’s rebirth, her instant rapport with Piyomon stood in such stark contrast with original Sora’s early reticence that we wondered where the angst was going to come from. It was the first clue that the mother issues that defined her character twenty years ago would be scrubbed and abandoned, leaving… well, Action Girl Sora and nothing else of consequence. Other signs, like the way too early debut of Omegamon and the minimal development involved with the first couple rounds of evolution foretold a show that was going to be light on the one thing Digimon Adventure excelled at: endearing characters working through genuine problems making them seem like real people. The longer the series went, the more that concept felt abandoned, and the harder it was to root for these cardboard cutouts of the Adventure kids. The result is a series chock full of exciting action sequences, a serviceable enough plot, and not a lot of thought behind it. It spends most of the first half as an intense, relentless, exhausting escalation of battles… then takes its foot off the gas in the second half to meander its way through two arcs where nothing of consequence happens outside the climactic fights. You’re likely to get smoother pacing watching every episode on shuffle. Worse, within these two extremes is a shocking dearth of meaningful message to discuss. Digimon isn’t worth all this blog space because it stands above other shows like it, but rather because its depths give us so much to talk about regarding childhood, technology, relationships, evil, loss… nothing of the sort gets any thought here. A few interesting concepts sneak in through Patamon, Tailmon, and even Negamon towards the end, but nothing explored to its full potential. We’re left with precious little to sift through except pondering how empty the series feels compared to everything else Digimon has offered us. The next series, Digimon Ghost Game, already shows signs of promise. In just their introductory bios, the three leads offer up more character, family background, and flaws than the entire Adventure: octet gave us in sixty-seven episodes. Given the ratings the reboot pulled, it was easy to fear that the future of Digimon would be the same hollow action fests. So far Ghost Game appears to be resisting the temptation, and deserves discussion. Unfortunately, for several reasons, it won’t be here. The window between Saturday night episodes and Monday morning posts is becoming too much of a burden, especially with a five year old that actually likes to do things on weekends. I’ll still post my thoughts on Twitter and maybe even quick reactions on Tumblr the way I did for Appmon’s initial run. Like Appmon, I may even come back for full retrospective Ghost Game posts. The blog was always meant to be retrospective after all. So for now, we close up shop after a hell of a ten years. Our mission of writing something for the six seasons of Digimon kept getting extended as the franchise reinvigorated itself and kept on going, a testament to the endearing nature of the show that made us write about it in the first place. Thanks to everyone who helped out through Patreon, Ko-Fi, or Amazon, or even for leaving a comment, especially in the early days when Digimon was still on the verge of regaining its momentum. You can still catch me on Twitter and Tumblr, along with the With the Will podcast (I’ll also be discussing the final episode on Podigious in a few days!). And Nexusworld is all finished now so you have two novel-length adventures of multi-season madness! Twitter will be the best place to catch news of any future endeavors, whether Digimon or not. Until then, enjoy Ghost Game! Digimon Adventure: Ending 5: Dreamers Figure I slack off on talking about the ending themes in the season with the best ones (that third one is so cute!). This one’s a little generic, but it’s boppy and fits Digimon so well. The endings are nice in that they’re a little less Taichi-centric than the opening or the show itself, and only the first one tries to elevate a character the series doesn’t justify elevating. Dreamers is one those songs that makes me realize I should listen to K-Pop more.

More Digimon Facts: Pt 2
((As the title suggests, this is a multi part post so if you haven’t seen the first one, please go check it out. Without further ado, let’s continue.
Now at the end of my last part, I said there was one more disrespected Digimon I neglected to mention. Turns out, there are actually 2, and you’ll never guess what it is. Seriously, I bet even some long time Digimon fans might not get this one.
Tumblr media
No, I’m not talking about Leomon. That would be too easy. For those still trying to figure it out, I’ll give a little hint.
Tumblr media
Take a good look at this Digimon right here and see if you can spot it.
....
Did you get it? No, it's not the Digimon itself. Ogremon are actually among the more intelligent side of Digimon despite how they look. I'm talking about the weapon it's wielding. That club is actually a Digimon bone. Not just that, but it belongs to what used to be one of the most feared Digimon in the series when it was first introduced, SkullGreymon.
Tumblr media
That's right, these guys would take the bones from clapped SkullGreymon so they can beat mofos with another mofo. And considering Ogremon are actually among the more common Digimon seen in the Digital World, it goes to show how many SkullGreymon get washed on a regular basis. And before you point it out, yes the dex says it "might" be a SkullGreymon bone
Tumblr media
But they pretty much confirmed it with Titamon's info, who just so happen to be Ogremon's Mega form. And people say Charizard is overrated.
The last of these disrespected Digimon I want to bring up is Hagurumon. Don't get me wrong, Hagurumon has one of my favorite evolution chains with Gaudromon, Andromon, and HiAndromon, but its rookie stage is a rough start.
Tumblr media
Let me put it this way, if even one of its gears end up severely damaged or missing, it will die. At least Spoink has a chance to pull through if it starts bouncing around again. Any tamer without a spare gear just in case would risk sending its partner to an early grave. That's not all, apparently this thing can control other Digimon by using a special kind of virus. Unfortunately, Hagurumon isn't among the brightest of Digimon and often has its ability taken advantage of by other Digimon. It's like a hypnosis hentai story where the hypnotist watches the victim get it on with everyone but them, including the person the victim is dating.
Next we have some Digimon that tamers should take special care of.
Tumblr media
Let's start off with Dracomon. A proud Dragon type Digimon, this little guy is more than willing to work with anyone that it deems worthy to be around, meaning having one of these guys on your side might be considered a badge of honor. However, any tamers with one needs to take caution while handling it as it has a scale on its body that will make it go berserk if touched. It doesn't help that it keeps that scale throughout its Digivolutions, so you probably shouldn't hug it...at least not tightly.
Tumblr media
Now let's talk about everyone's favorite digital waifu bait, Renamon. Just having one with you pretty much automatically turns you into a target for every Rule 34 artist out there, especially if you also have a Lucario with you. And what I'm about to say about it doesn't help. Turns out, Renamon are much more reliant on its bond with its tamer for growth compared to other Digimon and turning it into a Kyubimon is not as easy as it sounds. It is up to us to make sure Renamon gets the knowledge it needs in order to reach its full potential.
Finally, we have another one of my favorites, Lunamon. This Digital Monster that came straight from the dreams of Sapphire Rhodonite harnesses the power of the moon for offensive and support water and dark skills. Along with Guilmon, it's one of the Digimon I would love to have for myself, but there is a catch that tamers need to be aware of.
Tumblr media
These little guys can get lonely very easily. Anyone who plans to have one has to make sure they have enough time in the day to spend with them. Then again, same goes for any self respecting pet owner or parent.
Now we start going into the more...weird part of the Digidex. How weird? Well let's start off with ruining the mascot again. You remember MetalGreymon, right? Agumon's cyborg ultimate form? And you remember its special move, Giga Crusher, where it literally shoots rockets out of its chest? Did you ever stop and think about where those things came from?
Tumblr media
Well according to this, it makes them. And by "make" I mean those rockets are made of organic materials. Viridi would approve. Why? How? I have no idea and I would really like to keep it that way. Matpat, if somehow you end up reading this, I swear if you theorize those missiles being mutated Bullet Bills, I will constantly pester your comment section on every new video you post until you make a Baldi's Basics game theory.
Next up we have Etemon and that's because of one thing. What you think is Etemon...isn't actually Etemon.
Tumblr media
What you see in this picture is actually just a monkey suit. And no, I have no idea what it looks like in the inside.
-to be continued...again.

Digimon Adventure Shipping Masterpost - Part 1
Tumblr media
Digimon is the first fandom I ever got into where I started actively shipping characters, and Digimon is a treasure trove for multi-shippers since it features a large group of friends being forced together for long periods of time and being emotionally vulnerable while fighting for their lives and relying on one another.
Now for this reason, I maintain that there’s a good basis for nearly every possible ship out there and I’ll be talking about most of them within the Adventure continuity. Just giving the lowdown about them, fairly listing their pros and cons, and explaining why someone might like them while others might not. Afterwards giving my personal thoughts on each.
Now a few ground rules before we start. First off I’m only covering the adventure seasons and movies, minus the reboot and the newest anniversary film as I haven’t seen those yet. Secondly I’ll only be covering the main human characters of those films/seasons. Last off, I won't be covering crack and OT3s, just because this list is too damn long as it is. Characters must have interacted on screen before, be no more than five years apart, and this probably can go without saying, but they can’t be related to each other.
Oh, and any antis starting shit will be blocked!
So without further ado, LET THE SHIPPING BEGIN
Tai x Matt (Taito)
Tumblr media
Pros: If you like rivals to lovers, boy do I have a ship for you. Taito is like the typifier of this trope. They constantly fight, but are best friends, and when they do argue it’s usually over deeper things than just their rivalry/jealousy. Once the fighting is over, they tend to become stronger people with a firmmer relationship. They also hold a lot of respect for each other that only grows as they get older.  While not a ‘canon’ ship, (most of these aren’t) there’s a lot of gay subtext between them, especially towards the end of Tri. Now how much of that is the writers throwing the fans a bone and how much of it is just anime being anime, who knows.
Cons: If you’re not a fan of the rivals to lovers trope than this ship may not be for you. You may prefer them as friends only, and hey that’s valid since they indeed are friends first and foremost. Also if you’re looking for a more officially canon gay ship/rep you may be disappointed with how they are portrayed.
Personal Ranking (6/10) I’m one of those people who doesn’t typically like ‘rivals to lovers’. Just not my thing. However I’ve warmed to this ship over the years due to fanworks and the fact that Tri is indeed very, very gay.
Tai x Sora (Taiora)
Tumblr media
Pros: I don't know if this is the most popular pairing in the show, but it’s high up there. All throughout the first season and the second movie these two were heavily hinted at. Especially in the dubs. Sadly it came to nothing, but for a lot of people this was the first thing they shipped in the fandom.  But beyond just the hints, these two have that ‘childhood best friends to lovers’ dynamic that resonates with a lot of people. They’ve known each other the longest out of the group and were friends before getting stuck in the digital world. Now add in how they they compliment each other so well, Sora’s level headedness getting through to Tai stubbornness, Tai’s optimism and can do attitude encouraging the more doubt ridden Sora, and their shared interests in sports and kicking butt, and you can see how this pairing took off.
Cons: The writers tried their damndest to sink this ship in season two by pairing off Sora with Matt. Much to everyone’s frustration.  Even Sorato fans agree that it was handled poorly. Since then, the writers of the fourth film and Tri have tried to keep things more open ended between the three of them, but for some it’s not enough and the bad writing can indeed kill this ship.  There’s also the usual reasons of simply not gelling with their dynamic or preferring them with other characters. Some may even like the unusual subversion of the lead guy not getting the girl but remaining good friends.
Paronal Ranking (8/10) - Count me with those that first shipped them in season one when it first aired. That said, they were never my absolute favorites so season two’s reveal didn't hurt me as much as it did for some others. It’s still my preferred ship for the two of them, but I’m flexible and open to others.
Tai x Izzy (Taishirou)
Tumblr media
Pros: While not as popular as the previous ships, Taishirou is really cute. Izzy and Tai interact with each other a lot. In fact Tai might be the character Izzy is on screen with the most besides his digimon. They’re very much a comedy duo, but with enough underlining heart to heart moments to sell the idea that they have a working basis for something deeper.  Also Izzy isn’t afraid to call Tai out on his bullshit, which is good, but it’s not like Tai ever actually listens.
Cons: They are primarily a comedy team. Tai is very much a foil for Izzy’s more serious nature, but play for laughs rather than angst like it is with Taito. If that doesn’t jive with you then this ship isn’t going to appeal to you as much as some others.
Personal Ranking (7/10) - I more drawn to this dynamic then say the aggressive sexual tension of Taito, so this was always going to rank higher than that one for me.
Tai x Mimi (Michi)
Tumblr media
Pros: Mimi is one of the more popular characters to ship with. She gets paired with nearly everyone in the group routinely. Now this isn’t the most popular ship featuring her, but it has its share of hardcore supporters.  I think it’s cause both she and Tai are the most outgoing and optimistic of the group. So it’s a case of two very upbeat people pumping each other up while also being forward enough to call out each others bull.
Cons: If you prefer Mimi with someone else this is obviously not going to appeal to you. There’s also the issue of her not being with the main group in season two and therefore doesn’t have as strong a relationship with the others as she should.
Personal Ranking (7/10) - I really like just about all of the Mimi ships and this is no exception.
Tai x Joe (Taijyou)
Tumblr media
Pros: If Mimi is over-shipped then Joe is under-shipped. All the Joe ships are underrated, imho. Heck Joe himself is underrated. He plays off most of the characters really well, including Tai. If you like ‘opposites attract’ then you can’t get more opposite than Joe and Tai and they’re really entertaining for it. Plus there also those more serious moments to suggest that they are good friends and have that basis to build off of.
Cons: They’re again a comedy duo, and that might not be your thing. More than that though, they have the same arc. They’re opposites but they grow and develop in much the same way. As such, they don’t team up as much as say Tai and Izzy do.
Personal Ranking (6/10) - I really like Joe, he’s one of my favs, but this isn’t the best ship with him. Though it still can be cute on occasion.
Tai x T.K. (Taikeru)
Tumblr media
Pros: This pairing only works if we’re talking about season two or later, and that is where they have less interaction. But I won’t act like there’s zero basis here. They were stuck together in S1 same as all the others and did have lots of friendly interactions there, they do team up now and then in 02, and they are there with the rest of the group in Tri.  As far as dynamics go, both older Tai and older T.K. are very chill and laid back people. They’re more level headed, but always up for fun when they aren’t busy saving the world, so it’s easy see them getting along well with one another. There’s also the unrequited crush route if you wanna go that way with T.K.
Cons: There is an age gap here. Now it doesn’t matter as much in later seasons or post series, but it can be enough to put people off initially. Especially since it’s the time period when that age gap would actually get in the way is also when they have most of their interactions with one another.  I call this a good for fanfiction but not so good for AMVs pairing.
Personal Ranking (4/10) - Yeah not enough of them interacting when they’re both older to really sell this one for me. I’ve read the occasional fanfic with them, but I don't actively ship it myself.
Tai x Davis (Taisuke)
Tumblr media
Pros: Davis and Tai are two peas in a pod. In fact they are so alike that the series comments on this several times and Tai even appoints him as the new leader. As such they get to bond over a lot of things on the occasions they do interact.  Also, while Davis is the same age as T.K., he and Tai only ever interact in season 02 when they’re both already young teens. So things are a little less awkward on that front.  There’s also the unrequited crush route, or post series fanfic, as always.
Cons: They only ever interact in 02 where Tai’s role is greatly reduced, so limited screen time. Hopefully the upcoming anniversary movie will give us some more interaction between all of the 02 gang and the original group, regardless of shipping. There’s also the fact that age gap will be a hurdle for some people no matter what point in their timeline you have them hook up. Three or four years don’t matter when their both adults in their twenties, but it can make a difference in high school, so context is key with a ship like this. It helps that the show covers several years and all the characters age, but it’s up to you if that’s enough or not.  Then there’s people who just don’t like their dynamic and think they’re too similar to each other.
Personal Ranking (5/10) I like it more than Taikeru, if only because Davis is my favorite character in 02 and like the rest of the new digidestined, he really doesn’t get enough love from the fandom. That said it’s still not that great of ship for all of the previously stated cons. I’ll give the occasion fan fiction or AMV a shot, but it’s all about context and how it’s presented.
 Tai x Yolie (Taiyako)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros: She is the oldest of the 02 gang, and like Davis she only ever interacts with Tai in S2, so it’s a little less awkward to ship them than some.  Also she’s really assertive and outgoing and not one to put up with bull from anybody; so she she can balance out Tai’s impulsiveness in theory. Likewise he can calm her down enough to think, if we’re talking post Tri.
Cons: They barely interact even in 02. They’re together in group scenes and there’s the potential they’ve interacted off screen, but there’s no ‘one on one’ screen time for them. Because of that, plus the small age gap between them, no one really ships these two. They’re the ultimate rare pair, and once again I hope the new movie will provide some genuine interaction between the 02 gang and the original group. Cause at the moment, dynamic wise, they’re kind of just a watered down Michi.
Personal Ranking (4/10) - Yeah I’d just sooner just read about Michi, but the rarity of them does pique my interest just a little bit. I’m now genuinely curious how they would play out post Tri.
Tai x Cody (Taiori)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros: Does anyone ship this? Ok, well in the interest of fairness, I did say the cut off was five years and that they had to interact at some point and they do fit the bill, so... Here I go.  If you wanted to, you could do a post series route with these two. One is a lawyer for digimon rights and the other is an UN ambassador for the Digital World, so they would work together often. So there’s some grounds there for a childhood friends become co-workers to lovers plot.  You can also pull a one sided school boy crush if you go for a pre-Tri route instead.
Cons: Like with Yolie, Tai only interacts with Cody in group settings during 02 and never one on one. There’s the potential that they hung out more off screen, but unlike Yolie, the age gap between them is wide enough that that seems improbable.   Maybe, The Last Evolution will give us something more to go off with, just for their friendship sake if nothing else. After all these two will be working closely together someday according to the epilogue.
Personal Ranking (2/10) There’s just not enough there. I might be interested in that future based story I pitched, but even then it’s a stretch.
Tai x Ken (Kenchi)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros: Ken is unique in the fact that he’s a former villain, and in Tri it seemed as if he had reverted back to his old ways. This ultimately proved not to be the case, but since Tai is the main hero of Tri, you had the basis for a hero/villain ship for a while.
Cons: Like with all of the 02 cast, Tai doesn’t interact with Ken much. They appear in group scenes during 02 and that’s it. Even in Tri, it turns out that wasn’t the real Ken all along. Though his VA there is going to be his VA in final movie, which is cool I guess.  There’s better ships with theses two, and if you want a villian/hero thing there’s more options for Ken. Plus there’s the awkward age gap, tho it’s no worse then than say Taisuke.  Also Ken does have a canon partner in Yolie, if canon matters to you.
Personal Ranking (3/10) Not enough one on one scenes to get a feel for their dynamic imo.
Tai x Jun (Taijun)
Tumblr media
Pros: What do you mean Jun isn’t a main character? Yeah, I don’t care. She should have been given a bigger role in 02, but that’s a rant for another time. The appeal of Taijun is a pairing of the spares essentially. He’s Sora’s ex, and she’s Matt’s ex. (well sort of) But that leaves you with a tantalizing ‘let's pretend hook up to make our exes jealous only to fall in love for real’ plot.  There’s other routes you can go with obviously, but that one in particular makes the pairing more unique than other ships.
Cons: Obviously if you don't like Jun as a character, then your not going to like this ship. She’s pretty decisive within fandom.
Personal Ranking (7/10) - Yeah, I really, really like Jun y’all. Plus anything thing that sees her treated better than how Matt did in 02 is a win in my book.
Tai x Catherine ( Taicat )
Tumblr media
Pros: It’s cannon that Tai has a crush on her and her openly flirts with her. He also has an amusing rivalry with TK for her affections. It’s harmless cute fluff and interferes with the love triangle
Cons: Catherine is a pretty bland character. She’s pretty and French and that’s all there is to remember of her.
Personal Ranking (3/10) I suppose there’s a certain appeal to having a semi-cannon ship that is so barely explored that you could do anything you wanted with it and it wouldn’t be out of character, but beyond that I can’t see anything else to recommend it.
Tai x Meiko (Meichi)
Tumblr media
Pros: They have some cute moments together in Tri, though they are subtle. It does feel at times like the writers introduced her character as a means of resolving the Tai/Sora/Matt love triangle. Though they never follow through with that completely.  In terms of the dynamics Meiko is a complete woobie. A ‘moe’ is what I believe to be the term in Japanese. Shy, quite, cute, and in need of protection. So you get plenty of instances of Tai being the big hero and saving her. Tai himself is also much more subdued in Tri and therefore less impulsive and reckless, so he’s very considerate of Meiko’s emotional needs, much than he would have been had they met earlier. In a way she just shows off how much he has grown as a character. So basically lots of hurt/comfort angst going on.
Cons: If you’re not a fan of Meiko, then you wouldn’t be a fan of this ship. She’s not as well developed as the rest of the cast due to only appearing in Tri, and she relies more heavily on her archetype to carry her interactions with the mains. So how much you’re predisposed to that archetype factors heavily in shipping her with anyone.
Personal Ranking (5/10) I’m lukewarm to Meiko as a character. Her interactions with Tai can be cute, but she just doesn’t grab my interests the same as Jun does.
Matt x Sora (Sorato)
Tumblr media
I just realized that this very official screenshot from the fifth movie, has a poster advertising a band with the words ‘fucking night’ on it. This is suppose to be a kids show. Lol. Never change Japan.
Pros: The ship is about as close to canon as you can get. They’re confirmed dating in season two and it’s movie, and there are hints that they wound up together in the epilogue.  Also there is a basis for the relationship given their interactions in the first season and Tri. They communicate well and trust each other. Sora comes to rely on Matt in ways she just doesn’t with Tai. He’s an outlet for her to let her guard down and share things, while she helps him come out of his shell sometimes.
Cons: The writing for them in 02 wasn’t good. They got together with zero build up and it came across as very forced. Since then, both in the fifth movie and in Tri, the writers have been pushing a subtle love triangle between them and Tai. Leaving things more open ended to appease the fans who were angry over how Taiora ended.  Also, dynamic wise, they can be kind of boring on their own. Without Tai there, there’s no drama between them, and that can be a pro or a con depending on your tastes.
Personal Ranking (6/10) It’s not a bad ship, but the writing in 02 lets it down and, I still prefer Taiora over all.
Matt x Izzy (Yamashirou)
Tumblr media
Pros: It’s the ‘cool dude’ who tries way to hard to be edgy being paired with the nerd who sees through his bullshit, but they’re both level headed enough to work together if need be, and they do indeed work together as a team quite well.
Cons: Izzy and Matt don't interact one on one often. Usually when they do, Izzy is sandwiched between Matt and Tai as they work on some problem or other. People who do even ship it, often just go all the way and make it an OT3 with Matt/Izzy/Tai.
Personal Ranking (5/10) There’s a basis for something there if you want to explore it, but both characters have better options.
Matt x Mimi (Mimato)
Tumblr media
Pros: Well for one, it’s Mimi. She’s one of the few people who can get under Matt’s aloof exterior. It’s also a case of hyperactive girl paired with quite and closed off guy, if you like that dynamic.
Cons: It has all the same cons as Michi. Mimi is absent in 02, she and Matt usually interact within a group setting, and there’s more popular pairings out there for both of them. So if you ship either one with someone else, you may not be inclined to ship this.
Personal Ranking (7/10) I like Mimi, so I’ll always like this pairing to some degree, but it’s about the same level as Michi for me.
Matt x Joe (Jyouato)
Tumblr media
Pros: If Izzy is Tai’s foil, than Joe is Matt’s foil. They get a lot of one on one scenes and come to depend on one another more so than then they do with most of the group.  Plus it’s the geeky nerd paired with the cool kid. Joe isn’t confident but he holds a secret inner strength. While Matt appears calm on the surface but has a lot of issues underneath. So if you like ‘opposites attract’ then this could be for you.
Cons: It’s a comedy duo, just like with Tai and Izzy. Though they do have their more serious moments and deeper conversations. Also Joe is pretty decisive in fandom. If you’re not a fan of his you’ll probably want to ship Matt with someone else. Or you can make the argument that Matt is too mean to Joe at times, though he always apologizes for it and tries not do it again.
Personal Ranking (7/10) They’re two of my favorite characters in Digimon. While this isn’t my favorite ship for them, I’m all down for indulging myself every once in a while.
Matt x Kari (Yamakari)
Tumblr media
Pros: The few people who ship this, do so because of the above scene where Matt has to protect her from Myotismon. Also if Taikeru exists, than it’s only fair if it’s counterpart does as well. You can do the same for this as you can do for that and either go a post season one ruote, or a one sided school girl crush.
Cons: Outside of that one previously mentioned interaction, Matt and Kari get very little one on one screen time. Especially in 02 and Tri, where the age gap wouldn’t matter anymore.
Personal Ranking (3/10) I rank this lower than Taikeru because there’s even less to go off of and I struggle to see how they’re supposed to work together.
Matt x Davis (Yamasuke)
Tumblr media
Pros: Same as with Taisuke, Matt is something of a mentor figure who grows to be a friend. And if you disliked Taisuke cause you found Davis and Tai to be too similar, then Matt has that shifting dynamic but with a different personality.
Cons: It also has all the same cons as Taisuke tho. They don’t interact outside of 02, and there’s a bit of an age gap. So make of that what you will.
Personal Ranking (4/10) I do genuinely like Davis and I think he gets along well with most people, but this feels too much like a watered down Taito to really care about it.
Matt x Yolei (Yamayako)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros: Yolei does mention in 02, that she helps out Matt and his band sometimes with their audio equipment. Therefore we know for sure that they hang out together as friends even when not on screen.  Dynamic wise, its a case of nerdy girl gets the cool guy.
Cons: Near zero on screen interaction save for group scenes in 02, a small age gap,(tho smaller than most 02/Adventure ships), and its similarities to Mimato, is enough to put people off the ship.
Personal Ranking (5/10) I like the ‘nerdy girl gets the cool guy’ trope, but beyond that there’s not much to them.
Matt x Cody (Imato)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros: In fairness this about as plausible/implausible as Taiori, I guess. If you like a post series story about two hot dads hooking up or something, then this might appeal to you. Who knows.
Cons: Unlike, Taiori, Cody and Matt don’t even have that coworker angle going for them. Matt’s a fucking astronaut! Which is stupid, but it is what it is. I can’t see any reason why they would wind up together outside of them being in the same social group. Cody is TK’s best friend, and he might hang out with Matt that way, but it’s a long shot. Also the age gap is right on the cut off, so that limits their relationship to only being post Tri.
Parsonal Ranking (1/10) I don’t know why anyone would ship this, and I honestly don't think anybody does. If someone out there does, I’ll give it a look out of sheer curiosity but that’s it.
Matt x Ken (Kenato)
Tumblr media
Pros: It’s the two broody boys together. That’s it. They’re both sad and cute, with some anger issues that they’re both trying to work past. So on that point they can connect.  So basically soft hurt/comfort fics galore.  They also get a teamup episode in 02, so we see them interact one on one.
Cons: They’re a bit too similar dynamic wise. If you don't like both of your characters in a ship to be moody and angst ridden then this might not work for you.  They also don’t interact much outside of their one team up episode, and like with Yamasuke there is an age gap.
Parsonal Ranking (4/10) Count me in the ‘too much broodiness for me’ camp.
Matt x Jun (Junato)
Tumblr media
Pros: It’s Jun. Also she clearly likes Matt in 02, and he seemingly likes her back their first episode together. They free up Tai and Sora to be together. Oh and if you like the hyperactive optimistic girl with broody cool guy, then this has you cover.  If you also a fan of the ‘assertive girl chases after her hopeless crush’ trope, like with Sonic/Amy, Kermit/Miss Piggy, or Bugs/Lola. This also covers that.
Cons: If you don’t like that trope, or dislike Jun altogether then this of course isn’t going to appeal to you. There’s also the added problem of Matt suddenly acting like a douche to her for no reason after their first episode together. It’s like the writers set them up, but then when ‘oh shit!’ when they decided to go with Sorato at the last minute and had to work to shut this pairing down. It’s dumb, and makes both of the characters look bad.
Personal Ranking (7/10) I like it more for what it could have been, rather than for what it became.
Matt x Meiko (Meimato)
Tumblr media
Pros: I swear the Tri writers tried to throw in ship folder for Meiko with all of the OG cast. As if she was the potential solution to all of the love triangles in the show or something.  Just like with Meichi, this ship is all about the hero protecting the woobie.
Cons: Once again, if you like this ship it’s going to come down to how much you like Meiko as a character and the archetype she represents.
Personal Ranking (5/10) Same score as Meichi for the same reasons.
Now I have to start on a part 2 because Tumblr won’t let me upload any more photos...

Storyline thoughts for the earlier mentioned Morningstar Vengeance Mode (because I’m a digimon nerd that’s why). Warning, shit’s fucking long.
Okay, so, we start with Mike introduction as usual and it goes a lot different. Not completely different, but despite him and Kevin clearly not liking each other from the word go there’s a lot of changes. He doesn’t have eyes and teeth on Gwen for one thing- she and Ben are just a means to the Ruin Max Tennyson end and he’s going to make full use of them, can’t do that if one’s a half-dead thrall
Still flirts? Still flirts. It’s his default way of communicating with people in his age range who aren’t other Ossys or Elena. So he’s flirting with Gwen and Ben and sniping and snapping back and forth with Kevin because they’re too young to be thinking in terms of mating options but just old enough to be growly over territory.
The only other person who fights with him over it is Manny and he doesn’t even want the territory he just doesn’t want Mike to win. The others are either too far removed from their roots to want territory, are Erinaen and therefor non-territorial, live outside of territory range, or are Cooper and have accepted that the others are more dominant forces than him
Mike joins the team, everyone is happy except Kevin
Ken rescues happen, Max is found, mentions being happy about how well Mike is holding up among all his other ‘hi kids’ shit, Mike is notably colder than normal, is surprisingly affected by Max’s death
He is so fucking pissed, though that doesn’t come out until later. How dare he fucking die before Mike could ruin him. How. Fucking. Dare.
For a while Kevin is the glue holding the team together despite himself while Gwen is a wreck, Mike is a more put together wreck, and Ben is trying to pretend he’s not a wreck. It takes a while for everything to even back out.
(Not sure if I want to modify What little Girls Are Made Of... Like, on the one hand I’ve been writing Mike as having the Spark for a while now, but on the other what would having him be verified an Anodite do for the story besides encourage Gwike?)
Eventually this version’s version of Darkstar Rising comes along- earlier, probably, and with a lot more shit with the Plumbers Helpers before it happens- and we don’t have Magister Dumbshit (I can’t remember his name, this works) talking about vigilantism and crap, but about the fact that Max authorized a bunch of underage civilians to get involved is illegal, alongside a whole host of other things that are brought up that basically boil down to both “sit down, the professionals will handle things from here” and “holy shit your grandpa was a piece of shit”
The Tennysons are freaking out, because some of the shit brought up is stuff nobody would’ve known to look into if they hadn’t heard about it from family, and eventually it comes out that Mike is the one who made the call.
This is where we get the backstory- Max was involved in his father’s death (how? I don’t know yet. I don’t even know how he went yet. Also how bitter Mike is and just how he ended up going this far may vary depending on if I decide to keep Devin a thing. I kinda don’t want Kevin one of the Plumber Kids for this... Devin was thing but not Kevin’s father? Or his father but nobody knows/knew it? Eva seems the type to get knocked up by a one night stand and roll with it.) Max was involved in Mike’s father’s death, it was classed as an accident or his involvement was small enough that it wasn’t considered or he was just there, who knows, whatever the situation Mike put the blame on him and has been working with the Tennysons to take advantage of Ben’s hero worship to gather dirt. He was going to ruin his life, but with him dead the least he can do is ruin his good reputation.
Ben and Gwen of course flip and cut all ties with him while Kevin is torn between “Can’t blame him too much” and “Yeah, fuck him, territory thief” (Kevin no, he was here first, stop). With Kevin’s help they’re able to fake some shit to restore Max’s good name, managing to both get Magister Dumbshit to let them keep helping with the Highbreed Stuff but also managing to get Mike in trouble with the law (only half on purpose, because damnit don’t attack their family and make them consider how shit their grandfather might actually be)
That last one’s fun, making sure Mike will want to return to start more shit while also giving us a bit of darkness for the Tennysons to grapple with and try to reconcile. It doesn’t become a theme, but they do have to actually stop and consider that they just got an innocent guy in trouble with the law, partly by accident and partly because they were angry. (Kevin, meanwhile, sits sagely. He knows the feel, been there so very often.)
We still get the team-up for the Highbreed Finale, which stays mostly the same, with just minor edits to fit the new canon. Mike’s involvement ends with him and Kevin glaring each other down and silently parting ways, both too tired after all that to start shit.
From that point Mike is a regularly recurring villain across the series with a few different story types- 1) Out for Max’s blood, 2) Out for Ben and Gwen’s blood, 3) Fuck Off Levin This Neighborhood Is Mine, and 4) Miscellaneous
He loses the first 2 types, of course, but sometimes manages a win in Type 3 episodes. Makes it a nice power struggle between him and Kevin as they try to ‘take over’ Bellwood and Undertown.
I’m not sure whether or not I’d keep the Dominus Librum inccident... On the one hand without Mike being all half-starved I don’t know that it completely fits, but on the other we could have him finally taking drastic action to stop being so fucking hungry. Could maybe tie it in with a modified In Charms Way...
The boys lose their powers as a result of the artifact and for a while get along great without them, mostly because they’re celebrating being normal for the first times in their lives and hey, who else are they gonna celebrate with. But the effects turn out not to last long and between that and Mike’s continued hate for the Tennysons, well...
Then, we get a different In Charms Way where there’s no fucking pseudo-romance angle, purely platonic manipulation, and have it happening at the same time as Dominus Librum. How might things have gone if friendships had truly blossomed? Will we ever know? *shrug*
Mike’s involvement in the Ultimate Kevin arc stays the same, this time being brought in despite everyone’s best interests because he’s the leading expert that isn’t half-eaten and also they’re hoping he’s as interested in powering down Kevin as Gwen is
He really is. Has been avoiding that fucker like the plague, has no intention of ending up gristle between his teeth
While all this shit is going down, he notices the similarities between his and Gwen’s powers and begins looking into magic- even winning a few fights with Kevin through it (seriously, please picture both of them having big maps of Bellwood with their territories marked off on it that they just growl over occasionally)- which leads into the next altered episode
Couples Retreat is entirely different, like the episode idea I offered a while back. Charm opens her door to a battered and tired teenager laying on the charm and asking to be taught magic. She’s surprised, a little confused, and Gwen is visibly against the idea, so she says yes. The rest of the episode consists of the Tennysons trying to get her to change her mind while Kevin celebrates in the background because a Mike in a different dimension is a Mike without claims to Bellwood.
Charmcaster does not change her mind and the last we see of the two in UA is them in Charm’s library, going over the basics.
During OV half the time Mike is seen it’s with Charmcaster. His magic improves and he continues to hold a fucking grudge. They make a good team, she treats him like an annoying younger brother when she isn’t treating him like a student, it’s a fun team-up and the way she keeps correcting his form is hilarious. For the most part things seem normal, though sometimes Charm seems off.
Eventually though she starts acting too off and Mike goes to Cooper for help with whatever the problem is because he doesn’t exactly have many friends and Cooper is the best of moral grey. Cooper then goes to Kevin, and Kevin gets the Tennysons involved. This becomes a multi-episode arc where the old team get together again- Ben, Gwen, Kevin, Mike, with added Rook- to figure out what’s wrong with Charmcaster and fix it. They do. The final scene has Charm and Mike leave on shaky but maybe better ground with the Tennysons, a silent promise that maybe things could truly improve between the groups.
The flash forward episode has Charmcaster in the background
Mike is mentioned as not coming because even nearly 20 years later still Fuck Maxwell with a Pineapple.

I put down a bunch of thoughts about Kirby Right Back At Ya for you to read
Kirby of the Stars, or as it's known in America, Kirby: Right Back At Ya, is an odd little duck of a game tie in show.  It came to existence in 2001 in Japan and lasted for about two years for 100 episodes.  It began airing at a rather unusual time for Kirby as a series.  The games had appeared both on consoles and handhelds since their beginning in 1992, but Kirby was about to transfer to being primarily a console game.  Kirby's Air Ride for the N64 had been cancelled and would later be reborn as a unique racing game on the Gamecube, but for the time being all mainline platforming Kirby games would be on the GBA (and later DS) until Kirby's Return to Dreamland launched in 2011.
During it's run in Japan the game would see the launch of a GBA remake of Kirby's Adventure called Nightmare in Dreamland in the US, as well as Kirby Air Ride.  The former was likely released as a tie-in for the anime, while the latter would receive tie-in episodes premiering near the show's finale in Japan. In America the game ran from 2002-2006 on the 4kids based Fox Box, and would run alongside the release of Kirby Canvas Curse, Squeak Squad, and Kirby Super Star Ultra as well, although due to the anime's production these would not be tied in.
Kirby would seem like a fun, albeit challenging character to adapt to a cartoon, as Kirby cannot talk and the masterminds behind the series would not want him to talk.  To make up for this Kirby, who finds himself fighting monsters in an area on Popstar called Cappy Town, would receive the anime-common peppy kid partners in Bart and Lisa Simpson... I mean Tiff and Tuff.  This was the common thing in kid's anime, seen in the Transformers shows that ran at the time as well as in Sonic X.
While Kirby games are famous for their escalation from normal adventures to fighting some sort of cosmic threat, the anime goes for a much more episodic approach that doesn't really ramp up the stakes until the last five episodes.  Nightmare Monster Enterprises, or NME, sells Monsters to King Dedede, who uses them to clobber Kirby until they are beaten by Kirby's unique power copying.
NME mostly remains in the shadows until the last few episodes when their more direct assault on Cappy Town prompts Kirby and the game to go right to their futuristic headquarters.  Their leader, the Nightmare from Kirby's Adventure, which 4kids confusingly names NME, only appears sparingly through the show, with most of the hands on work done by the amusing NME Salesman.  The choice of Nightmare as the big bad shows just how much emphasis the show puts on Kirby's Adventure, given that the Nightmare is only in that game. Meanwhile, Dark Matter, a much more prominent evil in the Kirby games (who is tied with the villains and events in more recent Kirby games) appears as a minor enemy in the show's pilot.
Interestingly, Dedede shows how much of a basis the game places on the very early Kirby games.  Dedede, who began as a greedy king who would take his subjects' foods freely, would go on to become a rival and frequent Ally to Kirby.  Although he remains a bit greedy and lazy, he is nowhere near as antagonistic as his anime counterpart.  While Dedede and his snail Escargoon are the comic highlights of the show, admittedly there are some slightly off-putting jokes at the king's ignorance, such as his inability to read.
Meta Knight is one of the show's other main carryover from the games  In the games he would go from a mysterious antagonist to mysterious rival to mysterious ally.  In the game he is the mysterious star warrior who works under Dedede who helps to strengthen Kirby as a warrior for the upcoming fight against Nightmare.  He also exists to provide exposition, describe Kirby's ability, and has a cool little guitar lick that plays when he appears.
The main weakness of K:RBAY (wait is that almost an abbreviation for Kirby) is that it is absolutely a show for babbies.  Children's anime are not necessarily bad things, but this show does not come close to the interesting plots of shows such as it's predecessor Digimon, for example, or the long running Pretty Cure series, which would premier after.  It is, aside from the finale as well as a few multi-parters, an absurdly episodic show. New characters that appear either leave at the end of the episode, or if they do stick around, never show up again around Cappy Town.
And for a Kid's show, it tackles more “mature” themes rather oddly.  Ideas such as the environment, labor, and banks are brought up but then cast aside for later themes over the course of one episode, jumping around subplots like late era simpsons episodes.  Many times these plots are swept aside so Kirby can fight a monster, which often involves him absorbing a power in a very henshin-esque manner.  This weird dropping of plot hooks is definitely disappointing when the shows mentioned above have shown much better attempts (for better or worse) at handling interesting subjects in a kid friendly manner.
At the same time, I'm not advocating a more serial Kirby anime, or some sort of grimdark adaptation.  It's simply interesting to see how clumsy and odd this show is.  At the same time, this weirdness means that it is one of the 4kids dubs that works best, showing that when they are not tackling more serious themes (or erasing any weapons) that they can do some goofy comedy. I can only imagine how straight forward the original Japanese dialogue can be compared with some of the barbs flung at King Dedede, or his amazing malapropisms.  Honestly, the kind of escalation and battles done in the Kirby games may best be done in games.  Still, no matter who you are, you gotta admit that the 4kids theme song is a work of absolute art.

Why do people like Saban dubbing digimon but really hate 4kids for dubbing anime?
To be honest, I don't think that's quite the case. I think most people who tend to have apologia-level worship of the Saban Digimon dubs also have similar sentiments towards 4Kids dubs. It's "my childhood", so it's sacred and you're not allowed to say anything bad about it.
That said, it is true that 4Kids is the one usually thrown under the bus to blame for radical dub changes while Saban is treated as "comparatively loyal (for the time)". This is misleading at best. If it's loyal for the time, it's by a very small margin, and certainly not enough to claim that it's "practically the same" as the Japanese version as many do.
Saban's Digimon dub looks closer to the original because all of the surface elements supposedly look closer:
They kept almost all of the names in Japanese and only gave them "nicknames", unlike other dubs that changed the names radically! (Except they functionally never mentioned those "nicknames" again after the first time, and no matter how many letters each name may share in common with their Japanese versions, that doesn't change the fact they treated most Japanese names like hot potatoes because they sound too Japanese.)
They left the setting in Japan instead of making it a fictional American city! (Except they tried to do that until the number of Tokyo landmarks made it too recognizable, and it's still something they were able to get away with because the Digital World is prominent enough in the narrative for them to not worry about it too much.)
They didn't cut any episodes! (Probably the only one that does hold legitimate water in comparison to 4Kids actually cutting entire episodes at times, but one also has to consider that Digimon is a heavily serialized narrative where dropping an episode would create serious problems for the story, whereas you could get away with a dropped episode from 4Kids' longer properties with filler episodes since more of their shows were based on manga.)
They didn't make any huge changes to the overall plot! (Almost nobody watched Adventure or 02 for the plot alone, and it's only natural that slowly changing every single line to suggest completely different characterizations from their Japanese counterparts would have a massive effect, especially on 02 where it didn't have an extremely linear in-your-face plot that offset that to some degree -- and even then, Adventure wasn't completely immune, because it didn't stop Koushirou and Mimi's Japanese characterization changes from still remaining relatively unknown in the English-speaking fandom.)
"The Digimon (American) English dub didn't change that much" is the biggest lie the fandom will ever feed you, yet it still persists to this day because people will look at these surface factors and call it a day (and even worse, because this myth persists, fewer people will be inclined to check it out in Japanese and confirm whether this is actually true or not). It's never been about how many actual changes there were; it's about how many were noticeable. Few people talk about how there's actually a significant difference in how dub changes were handled the moment Disney took over (late Tamers to Savers), because it's hard to notice unless you actually have seen the Japanese version. Fusion gets treated like a laughingstock dub just because people were actually able to watch it in Japanese first and see how much got changed later; in terms of actual changes, it's not that much worse than Adventure or 02, it's just that it happened during a time it was less socially acceptable to do that.
So because of that, Saban is seen in the lens of a localization company that did its best to be "loyal" in a market where the 4Kids method of drastic changes were more dominant, when in fact they were aggressive about it in different ways (and you can see a very fair share of derogatory, dangerously-racist-leaning comments about Japanese media, writing style, and content from people who were involved in Digimon localization, so it's frankly kind of absurd to imagine they were doing all of this because they cared so much about loyalty to the origin). On the flip side, it is on record that a lot of 4Kids' radical changes were actually requested by the Japanese side itself, because they themselves wanted to push something that would be appealing to the American market, and 4Kids would sometimes go as aggressive as they did specifically because they got the Japanese licensor's blessing to go as hard as they wanted.
(I actually personally prefer 4Kids' original music and theme songs to the Digimon ones -- they come off to me as feeling like they have a lot more genuine spirit put into them -- but that's just my personal subjective opinion, and everyone has their own music tastes. Anyway, that's a digression.)
I personally don't think it's productive to be mad at the dubs themselves. This was all more than 20 years ago, the market was very different, the attitude towards localization was different, Japanese companies had their own varying stakes in the situation, and most importantly, what happened happened and I'm not going to blame kids for watching the only thing that was accessible to them at the time and developing an attachment to it. I don't think there's any point to speculating how Digimon would have been accepted in the US/UK/etc. if it hadn't been changed so radically, because the fact is, we don't live in that alternate timeline, so we won't get anything useful out of fixating on that idea too much.
The only thing I have negative feelings about regarding the American English Digimon dub is, simply, the way the fandom still talks about it. With things like Pokémon or One Piece or Yu-Gi-Oh, where everyone already understands that 4Kids made super drastic changes, if you say you're talking about the Japanese version because what you're discussing wasn't in the dub, people will easily believe you and acknowledge you're talking about something different, but if you try to claim the Adventure or 02 dub was different enough to merit a distinction, you get called nitpicky or accused of being delusional. This is what I really wish would stop. The dub was different! I know localization discourse loves to conflate "different" with "bad", so people don't want to admit that their childhood dub changed a lot, but it did! That's reality! Please don't make this more frustrating to talk about than it needs to be!

Bandai Namco debuted the teaser trailer, first gameplay footage, and new details for Digimon Survive during its Digimon Thanksgiving 2018 live stream today.
In Digimon Survive, the protagonist Takuma Momotsuka, whose name cannot be changed since he talks and others will call him by name, is mysteriously transported from camp to another world. He and others will survive in this world at close quarters with death while exploring and making various choices. One of the game’s key features is “growth that changes based on choice.” The multi-ending story and digivolutions will change based on those choices, and several characters may even die. According to Digimon game series producer Kazumasa Habu, he wanted to incorporate “the digivolution of partner Digimon through character development” as seen in the Digmon Adventure anime into the game system.
The story develops through drama parts consisting of exploration, conversations with characters, and events, while turn-based strategy RPG battles play out through battle parts. Digimon can digivolve during battle by meeting certain conditions and consuming Energy. Energy can be recovered by attacking enemies and talking to Digimon during battle. The latter can also extend digivolution time. While there are about 100 playable Digimon, Habu noted that Digimon Survive places more emphasis on the story than it does collecting Digimon. Also, unlike the Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth games, there are essentially no sci-fi elements in Digimon Survive.
Also during the live stream, Digimon game series producer re-confirmed that a new Digimon Story is currently in development. Habu first mentioned the new Digimon Story game in December 2017.
Digimon Survive is due out for PlayStation 4 and Switch in 2019 in Japan.

Review: Digimon Adventure: (2020) Episode 17: The Battle in Tokyo Against Orochimon
Tumblr media
In this episode, the team rallies together to take down a giant ferocious Orochimon, keenly aware that the more dire problem is happening everywhere around them.
Despite the fireworks, there isn’t a ton going on here. In fact, as far as the plot is concerned, it’s all about winding down the last episode and hyping up the next one. On its own, there isn’t much to stand on. Orochimon shows up and overwhelms the team, they regroup to rally and beat it. It doesn’t take a new form or a resolution of a personal conflict or even a dramatic speech. The little moments inspiring them are pretty subdued. It’s all straightforward, but still a perfectly good fight in its own right. The talking points all lie in the periphery.
The primary formula is very simple, and for an episode like this simple is sufficient. When you’re advancing the story outside of the main fight, the main fight doesn’t need to be complicated. Still weary from their first fight against Eyesmon, Orochimon shows up with unforeseen multi-head tactics they simply weren’t ready for. Taichi realizes their disadvantage and calls for a retreat, everyone except Yamato scrambling to get away. They hide, settle their nerves, form a better strategy, and come back stronger, with six crest boosts all they need to win. It’s a strength that it doesn’t rely on anything more than that. This series has always been more confident going for the big boom, so allowing itself to give us a battle with no frills and succeeding is a good step.
Not that the kids didn’t need a moment to psych themselves up. Usually these come in the form of a big powerful speech about determination or everyone reflecting on what they’ve learned about themselves so far. This time it’s more casual, everyone pointing out that they went through some trials while they were split and came out of it with some fancy Ultimate forms. It’s nothing remarkable or memorable, but, peppered with the tiniest bit of comedy, works well enough for the moment. Taichi and Yamato don’t give us anything new as far as their characters, but they do open up to each other a little more. Yamato continues to press the urgency of their mission, telling Taichi about Takeru for the first time. Taichi plays down the Orochimon threat as he’s seen enough danger to not be afraid of it.
The takeaway during their hiding that is useful is Koshiro vomiting the connection between this pocket dimension and the real world. The synchronization of time between the two worlds leads to a bunch of conclusions. Most critically, Eyesmon caused the blackouts by pulling massive amounts of data to this side, and Orochimon’s attacks are causing problems in real-world Shibuya. There’s no reason to think any of this is wrong, but he’s deriving all of this off of limited information. The extent of his speculation and the confidence he puts into them makes for a rather dubious plot dump and one of the few unwelcome exaggerations in the episode. It doesn’t help that at the moment, nobody can actually do anything with this information.
Still, it is a good excuse to spend some quality time in the real world and even give Takeru some actual screen time. We don’t learn a ton about him, though. He’s home alone, somewhat but not disturbingly calm, staring at his phone with Yamato’s contact info, and just sort of riding out the trouble. Considering everything going on, he’s… fine? I guess? It’s not all that striking. It does cement his parallels to Hikari, who is right in the middle of trouble. Orochimon’s attack sends their GPS on the fritz and a mob separates her from her mother. Yet she too is only kind of concerned. That’s a little more disturbing. Both of them see Taichi and Yamato in action, which is bound to stir something up in them.
Despite little happening, their presence is more significant than anything else going on in the episode. Between them and the return of the ominous countdown timer (who doesn’t love a good ominous countdown timer?), signs suggest something massive next time. An episode mainly centered around promising big developments in the next episode is working at a disadvantage, but this one handles the role just fine. It doesn’t go overboard with its own action, relying on good animation, music, and sound to keep us engaged. More importantly, it fulfills its goal, as the next one looks like it could blow us away.
My Grade: A-
Loose Data:
There are advantages and drawbacks to throwing in another EMP after the threat of one in episode three. On one hand, you don’t need to explain the concept again. On the other hand, it does feel like a recycled concept that’s scary but not all that novel.
Joe’s line about his falling exam scores is awkward, makes no sense, and feels like something rejected from the dub of Zero Two.
One rather annoying omission from them hiding in the subway was a proper explanation of how Yamato, Sora, and Joe wound up here. The opportunity was there, the need was there, and they just… didn’t bring it up. Feels unlikely it’ll get covered now.
Man, Mimi can’t help but drag the appearance of Palmon and Togemon. Girl, that’s cold.
There’s something nice about seeing both the kids and Digimon exhausted but satisfied after a big win like this. It both sells the energy they put into the battle, but also lets them revel in it for a moment before the next shoe drops.

What I Learned From Digimon Adventure 02′s finale...
So, rewatched that last episode (and the one before it for the epic multi-evolution sequence), and it’s hit me that it probably had an effect on forming my priorities when I first saw it.
My thoughts on the matter are under the spoiler tag.
And no, this has nothing to do with the end-ending. :P
I must have been 11-12 when the final episode of Digimon Adventure 02, A Million Points of Light, aired. Of course, over here in the UK it was just ‘Digimon’ and I most likely watched it on the Fox Kids channel which would have still been a new and wonderful thing, as we hadn’t had Sky up until a year or two ago.
I remember getting a little booklet in the next town about the upcoming ‘second series of Digimon’ and devouring its information and pages with gusto. I loved the hell out of Digimon at that age, and still do in much the same way as well as a deeper one that comes from years of growing up and learning. I probably missed a few episodes here and there, but for the most part I caught each new episode as it debuted over here. Only I missed the end two episodes and had to wait for the repeat.
Now at the time, I was still reeling a little from the split of my parents when I was 10. Up until then life had been perfect as far as little-me was concerned and suddenly now we were in a different house, had a different life and new family members. I buried myself in the new Skybox as much as I could to escape thinking about some of the more painful elements, and thus new concepts were always going to have a more lasting impression on me. There’s a reason why I love Lilo & Stitch so much, it came out when I was 12 and as someone who was now being excluded from my peer groups at high school, the ‘one place you truly belong’ thing resonated so hard... but I was talking about Digimon, not Disney so let’s get back on subject.
I’ve always been a big believer in the power of the human mind, in the way that if you believe good stuff will happen it makes it more likely to occur as a result. Maybe it’s overly simplistic and doesn’t quite work as well as an ‘adult’, but it is how I choose to live my life. The reason I discuss this is of course because a big part of how the end battle is won is simply by making the children powering the big bad believe in the power of their own dreams, which the big bad had subtly forced them to give up on.
Now, believing in your dreams and everything is a good lesson to take from a show aimed at children. But if it was just that, I don’t think I could pinpoint 02 as being the source of that belief of mine - it is a rather common ‘lesson’ to teach after all.
No, the lesson that episode taught me was the power of simple dreams.
Daisuke/Davis has a very simple dream that he shares in this episode - he simply wants to own a ramen stand/noodle cart. This baffles the others because it is such a seemingly small dream. Yet, I feel that it is an important ‘lesson’ to impart to young viewers.
We grow up associating the word ‘dream’ with lofty expectations. We expect a dream to be big, spectacular and something we could very easily never accomplish. Yet to have a small ‘dream’, one that is attainable, sincere... that too is a perfectly legitimate dream to have and in some ways more valuable to us because we are able to achieve those dreams and get the pride and happiness for having reached the dream we had. Yet at a young age it might never even occur that we can have such a simple goal and name it as our ‘dream’.
For many years I’ve marked simple things as my goals, my dreams. And I’ve achieved some of them, and made progress towards others. I’m not the happiest person in the world, but I can look back on those achieved ‘dreams’ and still get a boost from them.
Yet until A Million Points of Light I don’t think I’d ever have considered the possibility that a simple and achievable desire could be a ‘dream’.
Not bad for a poorly-handled sequel series and the one character the writers were ordered to not let grow or develop.

Yay it’s my favorite time of the week! Digimon Adventure:! Can’t believe we’re already at episode 16! This week somewhat recapped the mission we’ve been on for... 14 episdoes now x’D and I realized I forgot all kinds of shit. It’s so funny, when I was ten and watching Digimon Adventure I could remember everything, but now that I’m sadly an adult I can’t keep track of these high paced children’s shows!
(Supposedly they spoon feed kids stories so they can understand it more easily... but I gotta say I think I’m the one that needs the help, bahahaha)
ALSO... apparently there was an earthquake this morning! It was too north of me so I didn’t feel it (I was... also sleeping >-> so...) But it was right when the show started airing so the info came scrolling across the screen. At first it said
Tumblr media
“Just in case, be careful of tsunami”
and like just three min or so later
Tumblr media
“There is no need to worry about a tsunami due to this earthquake”
Phew! Also, Digimon causes earthquakes! Hide yo wife hide yo kids! Is that meme still current?? Does it matter???? I’m a millennial, boomers hate me, gen Z hates me, at least let me have my memes! XD
OK enough goofing off, on to what really matters, freaking Digimon man! This episode gave me tons of Taichi spam. Mmm my favorite kind of spam! But it also gave me avocado cheeseburger spam too!
So although I completely forgot about it, I was pretty excited for this ep when they allegedly return to the real world! Last week’s preview made it pretty obvious it was going to be either a fake reality or the evil Digimon had taken over the real world much more deeply than we realized. Fake reality made the most sense. But they tried to trip us up anyway! The opening shots are clear references to the famous episode 21 of 99 Adventure, although given that was the best animated episode of the entire show, this one just doesn’t do it justice.
Tumblr media
He’s not sweating, the sun isn’t as intense... it just makes Fizz nostalgic
Finding them suddenly home, the kids are all pretty bewildered at first. Predictably, Mimi is the first to recover. What motivates her?
Tumblr media
AVOCADO CHEESEBURGER! AVOCADO CHEESEBURGER!
From Burger Jack’s bahahahaha
Mimi starts excitedly listing all the things she wants to do now that they’re home. Aside from eat delicious burgers, she wants to take a shower, change clothes...
I’m like “Oh, so these kids HAVE been feeling the effects of how much traveling they’ve been doing!”
Seriously though why didn’t anyone comment on it before now?? In 99 Adventure most of the kids couldn’t shut up about the lack of basic necessities and creature comforts. It was really easy to feel how much they were struggling! Everyone in this series is so darn serious all the time. Sora even brought that big bag of emergency supplies but we only rarely see it get used.
Tumblr media
Taichi and Koushirou are a little more wary, though they come across as mainly confused.
Mimi wants to go eat burgers right off, but Taichi convinces her they should go home first. “Oh yeah, I have parents” - Mimi, probably.
They get on a train. The Digimon are very cute. They finally notice that no one’s paying attention to them. It took 0.3 seconds for Tokyoites in ep 21 of 99 Adventure to start freaking out over Koromon, so this was a big clue if you somehow missed that there’s something not right.
On the other hand, for a world that is presumably an illusion created by some Digimon, it sure is, er...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... accurate in surprising ways, bahahaha
(no seriously did we NEED bikini girls?? did we NEED them? I know it’s everywhere on every train for all kinds of proucts but did we NEED them here)
(the TEEN 17 in particular is killing me)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some gratuitous Taichi spam
Tumblr media
Mimi lives in the affluent Shibuya area now so the kids split up to continue on home. I love Taichi called her ‘ojousama.’
Tumblr media
Taichi wonders if Yamato and the others got home okay too. Koushirou wonders if whatever was causing the blackout has really been defeated. (Mimi’s theory is “Sora-san and the others must have done something about it!” Which I just liked because by naming her she identifies Sora as the one she feels closest to awww)
Tumblr media
They won’t say it, but the truth is these two are kinda disappointed... lol
However they won’t be disappointed for long... because this midnight train really isn’t going anywhere. *wink* see what i did there
Tumblr media
Mimi’s walk home has also turned into a labyrinth. Which is totally normal for Toyko subways really. Mimi gets so tired from walking that she starts hallucinating that Palmon’s head is in fact an avocado.
Girl you got a problem but no judging. I got the same problem.
Tumblr media
AVOCADO BURGER!! Think of it in your heart and it will appear!
Tumblr media
Now that’s not creepy at all.
Several episodes ago we learned that Mimi has never seen The Mummy. Apparently she’s never seen any horror movies at all, because she still approaches the counter to order her freaking burger even after seeing the cashier’s shadowy clearly evil visage.
Tumblr media
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR LITTLE GIRL
Tumblr media
On finally realizing that this train can’t go anywhere but Shibuya, Taichi and Koushirou get off and reunite with Mimi, who has learned nothing and continues talking to people. The only possible result of this is...
Tumblr media
... creepy eyes appearing and trying to EAT her
Tumblr media
Mimi: “Taichi-san!!”
she could ask her partner for protection but Taichi’s around and he’s everyone’s big brother so
Tumblr media
The cause of all this mischief turns out to be this creepy dude! He’s kind of cute!
Tumblr media
Also rather larger and more solid than I anticipated!
Of course this nightmare won’t end so easily.
Tumblr media
You know you’re in for it when the walls are covered in glowing red eyes. That uh, shoot laser beams at you.
Cyclops: Not lasers! Concussive optic rays!
Tumblr media
It turns out there wasn’t just one creepy dude, there were many. I’ve found my Halloween costume!
Tumblr media
Our heroes finally figure out that this world is not their real world when they come across these tetris people.
Tumblr media
For someone who’s never watched a single scary movie, Mimi does an impressive white-girl-in-a-horror-flick face.
I know she’s not white I’m saying she’s good at impressions she should become a comedienne
Tumblr media
Now that we know the blackout in Japan is still ongoing and causing all sorts of issues, we get our usual peek into what’s going on for the people of Tokyo. We get to see Hikari! She’s cool as a cucumber. Her mom’s freaking out and packing a suitcase. Her mom says “Hikari go get ready!” Hikari just says “Oh I’m ready anytime!”
Hikari: I’m not worried about anything, big brother’s taking care of it!
Tumblr media
Awww we get to see Miko! And that looks like a cat carrier <3 Mom’s not leaving their furry friend behind in the dark while they evacuate to grandpa’s place in Ibaraki...
Tumblr media
... She is apparently cool with leaving behind her only son though! X’D
The letter reads “Taichi, we’re going to Grandpa’s place in Ibaraki. Call me when you get home.” The arrow says “Address.”
Ibaraki is a bit over an hour from Tokyo (I used to live there!) so not too far and very easy to get to by train. Still... there’s a huge power outage, I can only assume Mom’s reason here really is evacuation and not just “seems like a great time to go on a visit!” but she doesn’t know where one of her kids is and she’s just like “eh no worries he’ll figure out his way home!” Does she KNOW her son is 11? Japanese kids use trains very independently but again, POWER OUTAGE. ONE HOUR+ AWAY.
I’m remembering episode 1 when Taichi was acting like such a Dad and his mom was totally on board. Apparently that is going to be a Thing in their family. Taichi is the kid in Home Alone. Scratch that, he’s like the pets in Homeward Bound X’D
Tumblr media
Mimi is understandably disappointed that she doesn’t get to shower... I mean see her parents... I mean, eat a freaking avocado cheeseburger
But Palmon knows how to make her feel better. “We’ll come back here someday and eat avocado cheeseburgers together.”
Mimi: “Heck YEAH I’m psyched!! AVOCADO CHEESEBURGER!”
this show understands the only true way to a woman’s heart is through food.
Tumblr media
Our heroes are surrounded by Homunculus from FMA.
Tumblr media
They merge together forming the aptly named EYESMON!!! lmao
Tumblr media
Look at freaking long Greymon’s cyborg arm is. Whut.
Tumblr media
AtlurKabuterimon gets hit by a train buhaahaha. Somehow this was way funnier to me than Lilymon getting hit by a plane or buildings falling on MetalGreymon.
Tumblr media
The kids are outnumbered when look who appears!
Tumblr media
The three of them sitting on Zudomon is the cutest thing ever also I JUST NOTICED ZUDOMON’S DOLPHIN PATCH WHAT THE HECK HAS THAT ALWAYS BEEN THERE!??!?!?!!?
So this was the reunion ep after all! I’m a little disappointed just because I wanted something more dramatic.
What Fizz, illusion magic and homunculi plus exploding Shibuya isn’t dramatic enough for you?
I mean EMOTIONALLY dramatic. Like, someone should hug.
Tumblr media
Oh well. This is the face Taichi makes when he sees Yamato. D’aww. I guess i’ll be satisfied with this.
Yamato gets them started on a plan and they all fight as a group!! But Koushirou’s realized that this Digimon, whatever it is, is what’s causing the blackout. They can’t properly defeat it...
Tumblr media
... and it’s already the night of the third day. Soon their 72 hour window will be up. Then Ariel will turn back into a Mermaid and the Sea Witch wins :’<
Tumblr media
We end with an ominous digivolution! Next week....
Tumblr media
Orochimon!!! I love multi headed monsters.
Tumblr media
More Taiyama action!!! Lookin a bit beat up but still cool!
OK so in sum this episode was pretty fun. I still feel like the writers for this season just don’t dig in deep enough to really make things come alive. They’re so concerned with battles that they miss moments for fun character interactions etc. And in the end, the whole of this episode can be recapped simply as “They discover the world they’re in is an illusion and they fight the bad guy.” However, we got a lot of fun with Mimi in particular, and though we didn’t get the kind of Taishiro teamwork my heart yearns for, at least we saw them sticking together and hashing things out.
I really do hope this show dials up the character relationships a bit soon though. We keep getting tidbits so it’s not like they don’t have things planned. It’s just a matter of execution. Anyway I’m happy to have the whole group (well as many as we’ve got so far) together again!

The Cactus Recs Fanfics, June ‘18
Will this be a reocurring feature? Darned if I know. But heeey, here’s a post about the fanfic I’ve been reading recently (and… not so recently?). This is a good reference for me too because I still need to finish/drop reviews on some of these :o
@florencetheflowerfairy has written a ton of stories that are either clever, delightful, heartwrenching, or some combination of all the above. “Sunflowers Along the Road” is an excellent series of vignettes about the Eternal Favorite and the Also-Eternal Favorite (that’s Taichi and Koushiro for those who are keeping track at home). She also did some great stuff for Digimon Femslash Week and if I HAD to pick my favorite… well, actually I don’t think I can pick a favorite. They’re all great for their own reasons, so here are links to them all!
“A Girl Like That” (WHAM! POW! Right in the feels) “All the World’s a Stage” (so adorable!!) “Jinkies!” (LOLLLLL) “Battle for Meiko’s Heart!!!” (HOW DID SHE KNOW THIS WAS EVERYTHING I EVER WANTED IN A FANFIC????) “Almost” (BAM THERE GO THOSE FEELS AGAIN BRB SOBBING)
I’ve also been making my way through some of @aiko-isari’s multi-chapter digimon fics! She is exploring some really cool concepts for characters that don’t always get a lot of love, like a Frontier AU starring Tomoki’s brother Yutaka (“a comet’s tail’), a character study on Himekawa (“your mouth to god’s ears”), and a Meiko/Hikari roleswap/what-if set during the Myotismon arc (“a queen’s plague”). She excels at writing scenes with an “in the moment” urgency that I find quite captivating.
Speaking of Frontier, SilvorMoon’s “The Spirits Within” is one of my all-time favorite Frontier fics. I remember reading it in grad school when I was, er… probably supposed to be doing something else ^^; But if there ever was going to be a Frontier sequel (hah!) I would still want it to be an adaptation of this fic. It is, sadly, unfinished-- but hey, fanfic is just as much about the journey as the destination!
Higuchimon has been on my Digi-author radar for a LONG time, so I was really happy to see she had written a fic for Appmon! “Captured and Confused” is a multi-POV story filling in some of the details about Yuujin’s capture during the Ultimate 4 arc, exploring some interesting angles while remaining true to canon. She also has a pre-Tri fic about TK and his hat from 02, which you KNOW gets my seal of approval!
More Appmon fics! Note these are pretty much all SPOILERS for the end of Appmon, so act accordingly: “blurred eyes” by reminiscence (Yuujin POV), “The Dying of the Light” by Walpurgisyiff (Haru talks to Yuujin’s mother, post-series but pre-epilogue. GUYS I LOVE FICS AND META ABOUT YUUJIN’S MOTHER YOU HAVE NO IDEA), and “Realization” by WalkTheTyrannosaur (an adorable-sounding setup for an Appmon sequel!)
And finally er… we’re all adults right? Put the kids to bed and lean in real close.
I haven’t been reading much M-rated stuff lately. But Kirishtu’s “My Light, Your Light” is a very nice five-years-later Haru x Yuujin fic, if you’re into that sort of thing!
So, that’s what I’ve been reading! Now tell me, what have YOU been reading? Let’s spread some fanfic love!
