warnings: mutual pining
----
"so when are you and kyra gonna start dating?"
i was caught completely off guard at that statement by charli. "huh?" all the eloquence left my body when i responded. "you and kyra. we all see it. you two make heart eyes behind the others' back all the time."
i could feel the blush creep onto my cheeks and around the nape of my neck. "i don't know what you're on about." it came out as a mumble but charli heard me.
"y/n i can see you blushing. can you just ask her out already? the amount of times i've had to listen to her harp on about you is giving me headaches." i didn't know what to say to that either. "she talks about me?" charli looked dumbfounded that i picked up that piece of information out of everything else.
"yes, now can you please go and kiss her to shut her up?"
"you first. i'm not kissing anybody." it was then that kyra herself came over to join us, and had caught the last bit of what i had said. "who's kissing who?" "nothing, no one." i immediately shut it down and charli couldn't seem to find anything funnier. "so i'm gonna go now.." charli started to walk off.
"charlotte layne grant!" my voice held a warning for her that she knew she cop later. she didn't seem to care tho and ran off with a cheeky grin on her face.
me and kyra were left there, the latter not knowing what was going on. "what the fuck?" kyra whispered out at what had just occurred in front of her. "charli likes to screw around with us." i attempted to explain to my best friend of 5 years. a grin broke out on her face as she understood what i was trying to say.
"you got that right. wanna go to lunch with me?" i agreed happily and we headed for her car. what we didn't know was that charli had recruited katrina and they were both watching us from afar.
we went out to a local cafe and i took a seat at a table while kyra went up to order for the both of us; we did this together that often that she knew what i liked off by heart. she came to sit back down and the food followed soon after. we couldn't eat too much because we had training later on in the day.
it was a comfortable silence when we ate, and small talk about anything and everything when we weren't. i just felt so comfortable around her, she was the one thing in my life that i would sacrifice everything for, even my career.
we were in the middle of talking about something we'd both seen on the media, i had pulled out my phone to show kyra, and i saw her looking at me in the corner of my eye. as charli would have put it, she was making 'heart eyes' at me.
i thought back to the conversation i had with the young blonde earlier and her words echoed in my head. 'we all see it.' and 'you both make heart eyes at each other when the other isn't looking.' it got me thinking that maybe i should take that next step, maybe i should take a risk and ask her out.
my anxiety pulled my mind back down to reality, reminding myself of what could happen if she in fact didn't like me like that. everything would be ruined, the team dynamic and the bond we have going for over 5 years. and everyone would know. that's the last thing i needed. i looked back up to kyra who had just finished her food while i, on the other hand, was only halfway due to my daydreaming about the girl sitting opposite me.
"whatcha thinking about?" you. "oh nothing. just got distracted by something outside." i lied through my teeth to her face, i couldn't tell her now. i needed to at least get through training. then if she hated me i could pack up and move to england again.
we finished up, more like i finished while kyra waited patiently, then paid for the food and went back to the hotel the matilda's were staying in. i didn't even bother to go to my room, it was always one of us in the others room and this time it was my turn.
i flopped on her bed, starfishing in the middle, and taking up all the space. "y/n move, i wanna lie down too." i shuffled over and held my arms out for her to fall into. she did just that, falling down onto me face first. we stayed like that for god knows how long before i checked the time and had a mini heart attack that we would be late. "i don't wanna leave."
"if we don't go, tony will skin us and drop us off the team." my tone was serious but my face betrayed how i felt.
with a groan she got off me and i grabbed my phone to go get changed in my room. "i'll come back to get you." i called out behind me and closed the door. as soon as i got into my own room i grabbed the first pair of any training gear i saw, changed the quickest i've ever changed and headed back to kyra's room.
it had only been 5 minutes, tops, so i knocked before hearing a barley audible 'come in!' and opening the door. kyra poked her head out from the bathroom and grinned at me. "geez, your quick. that desperate to get back to me, huh?"
i rolled my eyes at her antics, "you wish, ky." i shot back at her. "hurry up, let's go." she yelled back saying she was coming then ran back out to get her shoes on. we left to head down to the field where training was held. when we walked in together, both katrina and charli raised their eyebrows at me in a teasing manner.
i just flipped them off discreetly, trying not to catch kyra's attention.
โ€”โ€”
we had just finished doing the last lap tony had ordered and i flopped onto the ground. the other girls were walking around, everyone was sweating their asses off and some had gone to the changing rooms already. kyra came over and stood above me with a sweaty grin.
โ€œare you dead yet?"
"shut up, ky."
i managed to get out. she held her hands out for me to take and i did. when she pulled me up i came face to face, only an inch away from her. our hands had instinctively gone to my waist and her neck.
my eyes flicked down to her lips then back up to her eyes, just in time to see her doing the same to me. i thought back to charli and decided fuck it. "ky, do you wanna be my girlfriend?" it was silent for a second then kyra broke it and kissed me. i reacted instantly, kissing back and pulling her tighter against me.
she did the same with her arms around my waist, one of her hands trailing down to my ass, just resting there. we pulled apart and breathed heavily before i spoke up.
"so i'll take that as a yes?" before she could respond there was a shout from across the field. "finally!" it was katrina and charli, the latter being the one that yelled. "i knew you could do it y/n!" while katrina just stood their smirking, even throwing out a wolf whistle. i shook my head at the two and turned back to kyra.
we grinned at each other and i whispered,
"finally."

Yosemite
Our drive to Yosemite led us to a very different climate. Within about four hours, we had arrived our lodging for a couple of days -Yosemite View Lodge. It was a perfect place to stay- one of the closest hotels to the entrance to the park and a beautiful setting. Our room overlooked the river and we were fortunate to have a balcony to enjoy the view.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We enjoyed fish and chips at the hotel restaurant before retiring to our room to enjoy a glass of wine on the balcony. It was an early start the next morning in order to try and avoid the crowds at the park.
At 5.45, we were on the road heading to Yosemite. A 30 minute drive took us into the park. Once inside , the scenery just continued to increase in beauty. The sun was just rising and provided a warm glow to the cold early morning.
Tumblr media
We were pleased to find a coffee stop and a cafe for breakfast before we went to hire bikes. The downside of visiting in the summer was definitely the queues: we waited about thirty minutes to get our bikes. Once on the saddle, we were off. The park has a twelve mile cycle path which weaves its way around the park past most of the main sights. This was just perfect for us.
Our first stop was to the start of Muir trail. This was going to be our main hike of the day to climb to see the dome.. The sun was starting to warm up the morning as we parked our bikes and set off. It was about to get hot!
The hike was steep in parts and as we ascended, there were times when I thought I'd have to turn round. I wasn't sure if it was the altitude or just the fact I had got up so early. Either way, I'm so glad we continued tot he top. We had prepared lunch and were able to perch on a slab and just enjoy the views.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the afternoon, we cycled to Mirror Lake and enjoyed the cool water. There were several families taking a dip...braver than us! It was beautiful and would have been great for a swim to cool down, but with no swim wear, we weren't prepared to follow some of the others into the water fully clothed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our final stop in the park was Yosemite Falls. There are several waterfalls in the park, but some are harder to access than others. This was an easy cycle ride and short walk so a great way to end the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The park is just an awesome place to experience beauty and the great outdoors. We had a great day and wished we'd planned longer here.
In the evening, we enjoyed pizza on the balcony just taking in the sound of the river and reflecting on our day.
A brief swim in the pool in the morning refreshed us for the next part of our trip. We packed up and began our journey to Monterey.
The great thing about travel is often the small unassuming places you pass through. Mariposa was just one of these. Situated only about half an hour down the road, it is a small mountain town with a row of wooden buildings housing small individual shops. It provided us with our coffee stop and a moment to browse the local wares.
Tumblr media
Our journey would take us through large open spaces, definitely through a range of temperatures and we'd take the occasional wrong turn. On one occasion this led us down an empty road - well more a rather bumpy track before we had to turn around in case the car suffered any permanent damage.
Eventually, we started to see signs for Monterey and before long, we realised we were heading into a mist that would cloud our views and wewould learn that this part of California is prone to this , especially during the summer.

Sept 1 Glasgow to Barra
We made it! Highlight of the day was certainly traveling on this 18 passenger plane and landing on Traigh Mhor (beach)! It is, apparently the only airport in the world that uses a tidal beach as the runway. As a result, all of the flight times are based on low tide. We were very fortunate to have a crystal clear day for this flight. We took a bus from the airport down to Castlebay where we would stay the night. We met up with Tony, from Barra bike hire to pick up our hybrid bikes and given them a little test ride before heading out tomorrow for the start of the bike adventure.
We were able to get an early check in and quickly made some instant coffee to try and zap ourselves away. It was only 1 pm, but neither of us were able to sleep much on the red eye from Toronto. Which, was actually a great flight, props to Air Transat, pretty comfy for eco class, food not bad for an airplane, and everything went smoothly...except for me leaving my tablet on the plane...I realized when we went through security to board the plane to Barra that it wasn't in my bag to remove "all laptops and tablets"....crumb....I filled out the lost item form on their website, here's hoping it gets turned in. I've commandeered Ken's tablet for now. In between flights, we took what we needed for the Hebrides and through it into a packable duffle and shipped our luggage to Newtonmore in the highlands! Let's hope this works out.
Back to Barra. The instant coffee didn't cut it, so the next logical step was to have a local beer, "The Corncrake" which is weird bird out here. We had a good lunch and succumbed to our slumber (with the help of the beer no doubt) and napped for two hours. This still, didn't totally cut it, but sleeping any longer may have risked another sleepless night (for Ken maybe...lol I'm sure I would have been fine). We walked around, checked out Kismul Castle from afar (currently closed for visiting due to renovations) and then went for our dinner reservation at Kismul Cafe.
Who would have thought some of the best Indian food we'd have would be found in a far corner of Scotland? It was sooo good. Uneventful evening, basically went back to the room and went to bed.
Let the games begin (tomorrow).

A Riley x Steve chapter.
Mentions of sexual assault
Tumblr media
Riley's POV
I was lounging in my greenhouse, letting my legs swing gently off the side of the chair I was in while I read. Steve had sent me this book, must have ordered it as soon as he got back home cause it arrived only a couple days later with a note that read 'Love you, see you soon.' He he was good at surprising me in little ways, to lessen the sting of distance. If he wasn't working, we would FaceTime for as long as we could and when he was working I still got texts throughout the day until he was done. Sometimes, he'd FaceTime me just as a waitress from the cafe across the street walked into my store with a bag and a coffee that he'd ordered. 'Lunch date,' he'd say and we'd sit and eat together, telling each other about our mornings or planning our next weekend together. I loved him with every fibre of my being and couldn't imagine being with anyone else.
SMACK
Audrey dropped a book beside me and turned the chair across from me backwards so she could drape her arms over it when she sat down. She flicked her bright red hair over her shoulder and waited for me to set my book down and sit up.
"What's this?" I asked, grabbing the pink book and thumbing over the pages.
"Brook and I found it. One of your old diaries, open it. To the ribbon."
I flipped the pages open, stopping at the silky ribbon, "okay? What now?"
"Read."
"I wished for him again today. Someone to save my life. Who'll answer my call from miles away even if it's three in the morning. Someone who will stay up all night talking and watching horror movies with me, even if they're scared. And they won't be upset or push me if that's all we do. They won't be like him...He'll make the best French toast anyone's ever tasted. He'll put others before himself. And he'll be marvelously kind with warm, brown eyes and velvet soft lips. That's my wish."
"That's my wish," Audrey repeated.
"I don't get it, Audrey. Why'd you go through my stuff for this?"
"That's a love spell, Riley."
I shrugged, "yeah, but it didn't mean anything. I didn't know what I was doing, I was heart broken and, and after...I just didn't want to hurt anymore. But it didn't mean anything."
She raised an eyebrow at me, "you meant it at the time. Read it again and tell me that doesn't describe Steve."
"It could describe anyone!" I argued.
She just stared at me, "if that makes you feel better. But don't you think he deserves to know?"
I didn't answer, just turned my eyes down to the pages in front of me as she left.
--
It's been just over a week since Steve left and as the week dragged on, the weight of Audrey's words hung heavy in my mind. I had to tell Steve.
"Hey, Babe!"
I blew the air out of my lungs, feeling tears already stinging my eyes when I murmured, "hey, Steve."
I could hear him shifting, "what's going on? Are you okay?"
"I haven't been doing too good, actually."
"Talk to me, what's going on?"
"I just, I don't think I can do this, Steve."
"I know, I know the distance sucks, Riley. But, we'll see each other soon, and I think I can swing an extra day off so we can have another day together."
I sniffed, "no, I...I need to tell you something, okay? I just need you to listen."
"Okay," he murmured.
I swallowed hard, "about ten years ago, I...I was dating a boy. He was older than me, in college, and we were only dating a little while but he...I didn't know if I wanted to, didn't know if I loved him but he expected it. He, he forced me...he hurt me."
I paused to wipe my cheeks and collect myself a little.
"When I got home, I was so hurt, so heartbroken. I did a spell, a love spell so I wouldn't be hurt again. I wished for someone...someone exactly like you, Steve. And that's not fair to you, if you're only here because I wished for you."
"Oh," he breathed, "Riley, I don't, can we talk about this? In person? I can try to figure something out to come see you."
"I'm sorry, I just, you needed to know. I need to go, I'm sorry, Steve."
--
"Steve? What-"
"Riley! Riley, we need help! ...it's Katrina, she's acting like a psycho!"
I scrunched my eyebrows together, "what do you mean?"
"I don't know, like a fucking horror villain, Riley! You guys need to come help us!" He yelled.
"Okay, where are you? At that cabin?"
"Yeah, we're at the cabin ...I'll send you the address, hurry."
--
Billy and Audrey were getting Katrina set up in her room, saying goodbyes. Him and Steve had to go back to New York but planned for at least one of them to come back to Salem every weekend. Steve had pulled me aside, outside the house, to talk.
"Riley, I..I'm sorry," he breathed, "I'm sorry about what happened to you."
I shook my head, "don't be. I'm sorry, Steve. You deserve someone better, someone who can be with you the way you want...someone who doesn't need months to decide if they're ready to sleep with you."
He ran a hand up my arm gently, "I need to tell you something, okay?"
He waited for me to nod before continuing, "when I was a teenager, I was head over heels in love with a girl. I thought I'd found the one you know? But she didn't love me. She cheated on me for months, strung me along and pretended she wanted me but was in love with someone else. One night, at a party, she got really drunk and told me she didn't love me, that our entire relationship was bullshit. I left and Billy found her with the other guy."
"Steve," I breathed, "I'm sorry."
He took a deep, shuddering breath, "just, there's more. After that...I was so broken, I didn't care about anything anymore. I started partying all the time, could barely get through the day sober."
His chin wavered, his voice catching in his throat, "I went to a party one night and ended up out of my mind. I had no idea what was going on...one second I was downstairs drinking and the next," he chewed his lip, tears filling his eyes, "the next, I was lying on a bed...with someone on top of me. I couldn't, I couldn't move...couldn't talk, I couldn't tell her no."
His face crumpled as he broke, his hand coming up to cover his mouth when he sobbed, trying to stifle it, to hold himself together. I could feel tears starting to rain down my own cheeks when I reached forward to place a gentle hand on his shoulder. His hand fell from his face when mine slid up to cup his cheek, tilting his face up to look at me.
"I'm sorry," he choked, "I've never...nobody knows."
I pulled him close to share a gentle kiss before he let his head fall to my shoulder, soaking my sweater with tears. I wrapped my arms around his neck, holding tight as we both fell apart.
"Steve, I'm so sorry," I murmured into his neck.
He let out a long breath and pulled back, just enough to look at my face, "I wished for you too, Riley. I wished every day for so long that I'd find someone like you. I didn't know it at the time, I just wanted to love and be loved in return. But, after we met...I just knew, it clicked. The whole time, I was wishing for you," he paused, letting that sink in, "there's nobody else for me and I don't want anybody else. I want you, all of you, forever. You and me, every day. I love you, Riley. I don't need sex to know that I love you."
"I love you, Steve...but, did I wish this into existence? Did I force this against your will?"
"Does it matter? Does that change how you feel? Cause it doesn't change anything for me."
"What about the distance, Steve?"
He smiled, "what about it? You can come with me."
"To New York?"
"Yeah."
I scrunched my eyebrows, "what am I going to do in New York?"
"Be with me. If you want...or I could move to Salem."
"But, your job..."
"It's just a job, Riley. I can work in any hospital, I don't care where I am, as long as I'm with you."

Sixty - San Francisco
It was Monday and the first day Mike had to go to Stanford to work and I would be on my own. It felt very strange Mike getting up early to get ready while I stayed in bed. It felt even stranger that after two months of being with each other 24/7 we'd have the whole day apart. We'd planned to meet a restaurant in China Town that evening and off Mike went to catch the train.
I spent a couple of hours organising what I'd be doing and watching the latest series of Orange is the New Black so it wasn't so quiet in our little room. Then I caught the bus into town making sure I had Google maps ready so I knew where to get off for the next bus to my destination. Without Mike I decided to use a few hours to shop. My first shop was ModCloth, a store we don't have in the UK but one I've loved since I found out about. As usual with my shopping trips if I'm excited to go and spend some money I didn't find anything I liked. At least I got to see another area of San Francisco I suppose.
I then walked down to Japan Town, I didn't even get lost! While I was walking I suddenly realised the signs were in Japanese, the shops and restaurants were Japanese and the parks all had perfectly manicured bonsai trees. I was in Japan Town. I loved walking around and seeing the change in districts. I came across a Japanese dollar store and went in. It was amazing! I wandered around for a long long time managing to only buy my family's pound presents (at Christmas me and my family get each other pound/yen/dollar/peso presents, depending where we all are).
From Japan Town I walked to China Town. China Town here is a huge district full of restaurants and shops. I walked around taking photos and looking around the shops before I realised I was getting hungry so I headed to Union Square area looking for something to eat. What I didn't realise was that the walk was through the dodgy bit of town. Homeless people and people clearly on drugs were walking, sitting and lying in the streets. As I was on my own I walked pretty fast just wanting to get out of there. I had starred a falafel place on my maps for lunch but when I got there it felt a bit dodgy and there was no one else around so I quickly walked past.
I had another place starred also serving falafel (I was really craving falafel) so I made the long half an hour walk there, my stomach rumbling like mad. When I got there it was closed. By this point it was 3pm and I was getting hangry. Good job Mike wasn't with me. Across the road was a middle eastern cafe so I thought I'd just got there. I ordered a falafel wrap but they said they didn't have any falafel, sigh, so I ordered an aubergine wrap instead, paying a gut wrenching $12 for it. It came and was actually very nice, not $12 nice but still nice.
Finally feeling satisfied I walked around the shops, again frustratingly not buying anything. I soon realised it was nearing the time Mike and I said we'd meet but my legs were aching so much by this point (I worked out after I'd been walking for 7 hours) and I couldn't bear walking back up the huge hill to China Town. I realised I could do something else in San Francisco that I'd wanted to do while also not walking, riding a tram!
I found the place to get on and waited with some others. The tram turned up but was packed full of people. As I was only one person I realised I could hang off the side of it and still ride. The journey was great, clinging on to the rail I couldn't take a photo but we rushed up the hill, the guy driving ringing the old bell at every stop. It felt like I'd gone back in time on the rickety wooden 'trolley' and I loved it.
I waited for Mike outside the restaurant for a while, perusing the menu. He arrived and we went in. We caught up on each others day which was really nice and ordered beers, dim sum, fried rice and a tofu dish to share. It was all so delicious, the best Chinese food I've ever had (alongside one place in London) not greasy and full of flavour.
We came to pay and realised we'd been overcharged. When we questioned it and it was sorted out we were given two cookies to apologise, we're doing so well on the freebies in San Francisco! We caught the bus back to our airbnb and went to bed, ready for our next working day and tourist day ahead.
