it snows that monday, the first time in the new year.

lauren sticks to the indoor hallways as much as she can, because she knows her friends, (especially mike), and she is not walking around in a dripping-wet sweater all day.

jess comes into lunch bright-eyed, chattering with mike about plans for a snowball fight. her curls are stuffed under a knit hat and spilling out the edges, her smile wide even as she chatters, and--

bella swan is there too. still. she’s even less talkative than before, though--lauren wouldn’t have thought that was possible.

jess whispers something into bella’s ear as she slumps over the table, and lauren tries not to think about it. about how easily jess presses close to whisper to bella. she isn’t thinking about it. she isn’t--

the next day, tyler crowley’s van smashes into the side of the new girl’s truck, with her in between them.

lauren is in her car, hunting around by the gas pedal for an earring that she could’ve sworn fell into the cupholder, but there was no sign of it in there--and then she hears the crash. glass smashes. metal shrieks. and the screams--

she leaps out of her car so fast she almost trips, and when she sees it’s tyler’s van--when she sees him, through his splintered window, a shadow slouched over the steering wheel--

oh god, she thinks--

jess appears, gripping lauren’s arm so tight it almost hurts, and lauren repeats it out loud. oh god.

angela is crying, a few steps behind jess. a lot of people are crying--someone is shouting call the cops, call an ambulance, please, please, get a teacher, please, someone...

tyler, lauren repeats. jess nods--and replies, quietly, and bella swan. lauren’s stomach drops. she didn’t mean--she never thought--

they ditch, and jess drives them to the hospital, trailing the ambulance that carried off tyler and bella and, inexplicably, edward cullen. she grips the steering wheel far too tight, and silence winds through the little car heavily enough that the heaters hissing sounds loud.

lauren doesn’t know what jess or angela are thinking, but she can’t stop remembering the smile on tyler’s face when he invited them to the basketball game. the way his hand lingered on the back of her chair and it felt a little bit like forgiveness. the glass glinting in his face as they wheeled him out on the stretcher--

but he’s alive. they’re both alive, lauren thinks, sickeningly grateful. she may not like bella swan, but...yikes.

she asks her parents about snow chains when she gets home...and then she bites her lip and dials tyler’s number. it isn’t...she isn’t going to lead him on again. it’s not fair and she knows it. but she still...

tyler’s mom answers the phone with the air of someone who’s been fielding calls for hours. it’s lauren. lauren tries to make her voice softer than she knows it normally is. i don’t need to talk to tyler now, but can you let him know that i called, and i’m really glad he’s okay?

of course, mrs. crowley says, after a pause long enough that it can only be her putting together whatever stories tyler’s told with her name. thank you for calling.

it takes a week for tyler to come back to school, and when he does, he has bandages still wound around his forehead and over his cheek, and a brace on his left wrist. he sits on the bench at a basketball game for the first time that lauren can remember.

she talks angela into helping her make a sign with tyler’s jersey number on it for the next game--angela gives her an odd look, but lends out her sharpie collection anyways. at the next game lauren and jess crowd shoulder-to-shoulder in the bleachers, each with a corner of the poster, and holler until tyler glances away from the game and cracks them a smile. it looks only slightly pained.

on valentine’s day, jess laughingly buys angela and lauren each a little heart-shaped chocolate from student council’s folding table at the doors.

lauren’s stomach twists. she thinks about first grade, about diligently lining up more shiny gold heart stickers onto jess and angela’s valentines than anyone else’s, because they were her best friends and she wanted to make sure they had the best cards, even if they never knew they were from her--

she clenches the chocolate in her fist, feeling the edges go soft. ms. michaels keeps a trash can right by the door, and on the way into first-period french lauren hurls the little tin-wrapped heart into it. it thuds, and her stomach lurches again.

she skips lunch that day and drives to the little grocery store through the pounding rain. she buys jess her favorite donut, (chocolate coconut), and angela a plastic box of chocolate-covered almonds.

do you think i have a chance with mike? jess asks that night, voice crackling over the phone.

lauren leans her head against the cool marble of her kitchen counter, eye-level with her english notebook and the ring around her mug of coffee. breathe, she tells herself.

out loud, she says i think you’d have more of a chance with him if you’d stop dragging bella along to everything.

jess sighs so vehemently it sounds like static. that’s not her fault! you can hate her because tyler keeps asking her out, but i’m not ditching the poor girl just because of mike.

tyler’s asking her out? lauren props her head back up on her elbows--jess scoffs, and for a second lauren contemplates hanging up.

for the record, she says instead, my problem with her is because of something completely different.

there’s silence for a second--it’s cold and awkward and all of a sudden lauren is aware of all of her own edges. the sharpness to her voice, the stupid, nasal way it pinches.

i do think mike would be stupid not to want to date you though. she makes the words as soft as she can, and wonders if jess can hear the difference.

if she can hear it too well--

lauren swallows and focuses on the silence. lets herself picture jess, just jess, sprawled out on her bright pink comforter, tugging at that one curl like she always does when she’s worried--

i mean it. you’re--gorgeous, you make the best plans, you’re hands-down the smartest person in our grade--

oh, stop jess says, but lauren can hear her smile over the phone, so she twists her finger into the phone cord and keeps going. i mean, remember the time when mike ran out of gas halfway to port angeles and you convinced me to go get him because you didn’t have a license yet and i was fully ready to leave his ass to learn a lesson? if he doesn’t want to date you for that alone...

a week later, posters for the sadie hawkins dance start creeping up around the school.

Miss Behavin’ Columbus 2019

This past weekend was Miss Behavin’s 3rd annual event, held this year at Land Grant Brewing Company in Columbus, OH. I’m including some of my favorite shots taken by the talented Erika Gene Clark.

I got involved in working on this event about two years ago when Courtney Bryant, the main mind behind the magic, asked a few of her friends to be involved in helping out with her idea. Courtney was developing a platform where she could simultaneously celebrate females doing things that aren’t historically seen as very female while also promoting and supporting a charitable cause.

Miss Behavin’ promotes female riders and drivers through featuring them on social media and showcasing their cars and bikes at the annual event, in hopes it will inspire and encourage other females, of any age, to aspire to anything they want, regardless of gender biases. But equally important and at the core, it promotes and benefits non-profits and charities through generous donations from local businesses that are auctioned off at the annual event.

I remember attending Miss Behavin’ on year one at Seventh Son. That year they raised $328 for Peace for Paws. I think I might have met Courtney for the first time there. By the second year, I was involved and helping with planning and building a brand. Year two was held at North High Brewing in the rain, with a silent auction and a few local vendors selling goods. Despite the weather we had a good turnout and raised $1063 for Ruling Our Experiences.

This year, our chosen benefactor was Advocating Opportunity, who provides comprehensive services to women and men who have experienced sex or labor trafficking. Trafficking is a huge problem here in Ohio, and we were pleased to be able to raise over 2k in donations thanks to all of those who attended.

To boot, the crowd was huge and it was a rad ol’ time. I’ve never been a regular attendee to bike and car shows, but what was cool about Miss Behavin’ is that there was a little bit of everything there; from choppers to dirt bikes to vintage street cruisers and hot rods. I brought Uncle Rico out, my ’87 Ford E150 Fiesta Camper Van, with my 79’ XR 185 on the hauler, and left the doors open for folks to see my custom build. There’s something voyeuristic about watching people look at and talk about your ride with you standing there as the anonymous owner. I love seeing the reactions.

I gave one kid the grand tour, which takes a total of five minutes and consists of turning in a circle and pointing at the stove, the spice rack, the raccoon portrait, the fishing pole holders, the convertible couch / bed, the toy van on the van dashboard, and the 80′s/90′s dirt rider mural on the fridge front. It’s a point of pride, especially when I think of three years ago when I had it stripped bare and slowly started re-building the interior, mostly from scrap and donated material. Uncle Rico is an amazing machine, but he paled in comparison to the Firebird, Boss 302 and GMC Sierra Classic staring directly at him (I see you, ladies). And then those paled in comparison to the vintage Chevy truck parked across the alley. I should have brought my Falcon, but it has a track record of breaking down at Miss Behavin…it’s done so every damn year.

My 1990 Kawasaki KDX 200 was leaned against the brewery wall next to rows of bikes of all sorts. Choppers, vintage stock bikes, modern dirt bikes with sumo setups, dual sports, etc etc, but I was seeing so many familiar faces I barely had time to look at them. It’s inspiring to me to get to talk to other women that will rattle off every small detail about their own bikes with the same amount of enthusiasm and love that I have for mine, so my only regret from the event is not being able to spend more time doing that. Columbus has an amazing scene of female bike and car enthusiasts, and MissBehavin’ was definitely proof of the growing motorcycle community, both male and female.

Before I got into the planning and efforts of putting on Miss Behavin, I barely knew many of the women I know now through being involved. Since year one, it’s gone from “they” to “we” and now I call them close friends; women I reach out to for things, women that I hope know they can do the same to me, women that I hope I get to ride with more this coming year. And we’ve now all watched this event grow significantly in three years time. Not only because of our efforts but also because of a community of people all willing to give something to a bigger cause. That’s what it’s all about. Through Miss Behavin’, I’ve learned that the amount of time and effort it takes to plan and execute an event like this can only be met with relentless persistence. It sometimes seems like too much to take on. Until you’re there, at the event, and can catch a moment to really look around at the people, the bikes, the cars, and my sick van ; )

Then it all makes total sense.

It's really amazing to me that Smeyer thought Lauren had to be punished for the 'unforgivable' crime of not liking Bella. Does she know that characters can not like other characters and not have to be humiliated for it?

like. if i was lauren i too would hate bella. she gets dragged into that friend group without lauren's consent just because she's the new kid, proceeds to Only care about the cullens, constantly thinks about lauren as ugly and her voice as nasal (which we don't get bella saying out loud...but i'm sure it colors her interactions with lauren even if bella doesn't think it does), and also? bella treats the forks kids as incredibly disposable. it becomes really evident in new moon when she puts jessica in a possibly life-threatening situation after ignoring her for months and only talking to her again because charlie is threatening to send her away, but it's in twilight too. bella actively thinks that the only one she likes is angela (because angela is quiet and doesn't ask questions), which again, she may never say out loud but is definitely still coloring her actions. she seems to care more about the attention she gets after the car crash and not the fact that tyler had to sell his van for scrap and was probably really injured? she only engages with activities (dress shopping but not going to the dance; la push but not the snowball fight) that are on her terms, and i'm not attacking her for that alone (i am an introvert, i Relate TM), but it is another valid reason for lauren to see bella as just using her and her friends, which is something that ends up being proven right in later books.

and like, obviously lauren isn't 100% correct. bella's dealing with the supernatural, so it's...kind of understandable that she blows off the humans the way she does? (definitely still shouldn't treat jessica the way she does in new moon and eclipse. like, that graduation scene is YIKES, but when lauren starts "hating" bella that hasn't happened yet.) also lauren is, fundamentally, a bit of a high school mean girl (although smeyer's understanding of high school is apparently so fucking weird that she really, really doesn't read that way if you take like. one step back, because the dynamic of the human friend group is just really random and strange and feels like smeyer was like. "hm. i want all of these people to interact" without putting any thought into what actually makes people in high school hang out with each other; main point being i do Not believe that lauren is anywhere near as popular as smeyer wants us to believe)

but that doesn't mean she deserves anywhere near the level of vitriol bella treats her with.

she also doesn't deserve the narrative she gets. it's so weird that smeyer felt the need to make sure we know she's unhappy with her date at prom. what the fuck? (also i posit that she's just glaring at bella because tyler's been saying he was taking her to prom for months, which i feel like it would've been pretty reasonable for bella to shut down...like, she complains about him in canon, but never actually tells him it's not true, and i'm definitely not defending tyler because that's weird as hell, but if you're not bella and you don't know tyler's made this up out of nowhere, then you probably just assume he actually asked her and she would've told someone if he didn't...and then bella shows up with edward...but that's a whole other mess.)

also, she definitely doesn't deserve for smeyer to write an entire extra bit on her fucking website about how lauren gets scammed into cutting her hair because she wants to be a model? like...yeah, the modeling industry itself is fucked up, but that's not on lauren for wanting to be one? or for wanting to be seen as pretty? like, i don't understand how you write a character who your narrator consistently says is ugly and then demonize her for wanting to feel pretty? that's so fucked!

plus none of that even touches on how "logan" in life and death is treated way differently, and beau even ends up setting him and taylor up successfully (albeit very weirdly), which is a whole other set of issues with smeyer's misogyny, but...separate issue i guess.

overall just...yikes
