Why Do People With Doshas Visit Temples?
Tumblr media
According to the famous astrologer in India as well as conventionally taught astrology systems, the placement of particular combinations of planets in houses produces predetermined effects. The beneficial combinations are known as Yogas, whereas the malefic ones are known as Doshas. In a nutshell, a Dosha is an unfavourable planetary alignment or a fault in one's birth chart. Temples for doshas are also recommended as a treatment for the fault they produce.
 Planets And Their Doshas :
Manglik or Chevvai Dosha is caused by Mars in certain houses. The Kal Sarpa Dosha is formed by the placement of all planets between Rahu and Ketu. Shrapit Dosha is caused by Saturn and Ketu, Chandra Dosha is caused by the moon, and Gandmool Dosha is caused by the moon's position in specific degrees. Pitra Dosha is caused by the Sun and Rahu, whereas Guru Chandal Yoga/Dosha is caused by Jupiter and Rahu. There are other other doshas. Doshas are formed by the weakness of planets/houses, as well as unfavourable placements or malefic influences.
 Prarabdha Karma :
The good or bad Karma that we have brought into this birth from our past births is called Prarabdha Karma. Additionally, we have the privilege of being able to assess the state of our Prarabdha Karma through our horoscopes. By understanding the dosha if any in our birth charts and then by making a sincere effort to remedy them and atone for them we try to get some relief from the problems caused by the specific Dosha.
What Are The Remedies For A Dosha?
Astrology aims to not only detect issues, but also to discover solutions to them or to lessen their severity. Fasting, penance, mantra, tantra, homas, charity yantras, pilgrimage, and even remedies from a red book (Lal Kitab) are some astrological remedies, as well as a combination of some of the aforementioned.
Remedies, according to learned astrologers, cannot be employed as a form of barter or exchange to invalidate our bad karma, but they do go a long way toward alleviating the suffering produced by the bad karma. Furthermore, our desire to atone for and balance the negative is a really beneficial thing.
 Pilgrimage: Temples For Doshas
What Are Some Dosha Nivarthi Temples?
There are many larger and smaller temples for doshas that are prescribed for relief from a particular dosha. Also, these temples are called Dosha Nivarthi Temples. Some famous temples for Dosha Nivarthi in Southern India are;
 Sun :
Suriyanar Temple is the temple for Doshas involving the Sun. The temple is located in Tirumangalakkudi village which is near Aduthurai in the Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. This is one of the few historic temples that is dedicated to the Sun god and it is also one of the few to have shrines for all the other deities representing the nine planets or Navagrahas.
Tumblr media
Moon :
The temple for the Moon is located in Thingalur in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu near Thiruvaiyaru. Chandran is another name for the Thingalur Temple. It is also a place to perform the customary first feeding of rice to infants.
 Mars :
A person with problems related to Mars should worship Lord Muruga at Palani, Madurai District, Tamilnadu. The Vaitheeswaran temple is also prescribed for Mars related issues. Devotees worship Lord Shiva as the “God of healing” at the Vaitheeswaran Temple. The temple is located near Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam District, Tamilnadu.
 Mercury :
Devotees worship Lord Shiva as Sri Swetaranyeswarar at the Swetharanyeswarar Temple in Thiruvengadu. It is also near Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam District, Tamilnadu.
 Jupiter :
For Jupiter related problems one should visit the temple of Sri Aabathsahayeswarar where one can worship Sri Dakshinamurthy near Alangudi in Kumbakonam.
 Venus :
The Agneeswarar temple in Kanjanur is the place of worship for Venus related problems. The temple is located near Aduthurai, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.
 Saturn :
Lord Saneeshwara’s (Saturn) temple at Thirunallar is the famous pilgrimage centre for problems related to Lord Saturn especially Sade-Sati. It is near Karaikal.
 Rahu :
The Thirunageswaram Temple where the presiding deity is Naganathaswamy is the temple for Rahu related problems as well as certain Doshas like Kal Sarpa Dosha. It is located 6 km from Kumbakonam on the Karaikal Road.
Tumblr media
Ketu :
The temple for Ketu is at Kizhaperumpallam Temple near Dharmankulam which is about 20 km from the town of Sirkazhi in the Nagapattinam District of Tamilnadu, through the eyes of the famous astrologer in Kolkata. This temple is to be visited for Ketu related issues although the main deity is Naganatha Swamy or Shiva.

Understanding Thani Avarthanam in a Karnatic Concert
The percussion solo (Thani Avarthanam) is one of the highlights of modern Karnatic music concerts. Understanding its basic elements will be helpful in appreciating it better. Creative Team is publishing an article on 'Thani Avarthanam', written by one of the leading mridangam players from Kerala, Erickavu N Sunil. This article will be of use to many students and Karanatic music listeners in understanding the basic structure of Thani Avarthanam.
Erickavu N Sunil, has done his advanced studies in Mridangam from the Legendary Maestro Sangeetha Kalacharya Late Professor Mavelikkara Velukkutty Nair. Sunil is an A-grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan. He has accompanied musicians including Padmabhushan Sangeetha Kalanidhi T. V. Sankaranarayanan, Padmasri Neyyattinkara Vasudevan, Prof. Parassala Ponnammal, Madhurai G S Mony, Prof: Mavelikkara Prabhakara Varma, Dr. K. Omanakutty, Prof. K. Venktaramanan, Dr. S. Sowmya, Kunnakkudi Balamuralikrishna, Dr. Sreevalsan J. Menon, Sankaran Namboothiri, Thiruvengadu Jayaraman, M. Jayachandran, Balabhaskar, etc. for their concerts.
Read more about Sunil in Wikipedia
What is Thani Avarthanam in a Karnatic (Carnatic) Concert?
Thani Avarthanam (or simply Thani) in a Karnatic Concert is the “Percussion Ensemble Module” which would typically start immediately after the main “Kriti” (or item or composition), presented by the vocalist (or the main artist). While accompanying the concert, the percussionist(s) need to support the main artist in all possible ways to enhance the composition to heights, whereas the Thani Avarthanam module gives them the opportunity to showcase their talent and expertise as a solo percussion artist. Thani Avarthanam now a days is a key highlight in any Karnatic concert.
As mentioned, the Thani would be played in the same Tala which the main artist recite the main “Kriti”. Hence the percussionist(s) need to be well equipped to play in all possible Talas, whereas in most of the cases the main “Kriti” would be in Adi Tala.
Which all are the instruments played in Thani Avarthanam for a Karnatic Concert?
For a Karnatic concert, the two mandatory accompaniments (Pakka Vadyams) are Violin and Mridangam. Among this, Mridangam is the mandatory percussion instrument to be used. For this reason, Mridangam would lead the Thani. To add flavour to the percussion part, sub-accompanying instruments (Upa Pakka Vadyams) like Kanjira (or Kanchira or Ganjira), Ghatom, and Morsing (Mughar Sanghu) are also used. If Upa Pakka Vadyam(s) are also present in a concert, they would also be part of the Thani along with Mridangam.
Note: For a Karnatic Nadaswaram (Nagaswaram) recital, the mandatory percussion instrument used is Thavil (Thakil). For Mandolin and Saxaphone concerts, Mridangam AND/OR Thavil are used.
Why Thani Avarthanam is needed (included) in a Karnatic Concert? Is Thani Avarthanam mandatory in a concert?
Though there is no standard rule that Thani Avarthanam mandatorily needs to be part of a concert, it is a standard practice to include Thani. As pointed out earlier, this module gives opportunity to showcase the expertise of percussionist(s). There are rasikas as well as connoisseurs who are very keen in listening and appraising the Thani.
What are the essential components in a Thani Avarthanam?
There is no standard rule on the overall structure of the Thani, however it is mandatory, rather a usual practice, that the Thani needs to end with a Mohra (or Morai) and a Korvai. The Korvai would be played thrice after which the main artist would start the “Kriti”.
In practice, there can be a few rounds of percussion solos (exchanges) between the Mridangam and Kanjira/Ghatom/Morsing where the artists can play one or more of the below “Gathi” (or gati) – the rhythmic patterns.
Different “Gathi” (rhythmic pattern) are multiples of 3 - Tishra (Triplets), 4 - Chaturashra (quadruplets), 5 - Khanda (quintuplets), 7 - Mishra (septuplets), and 9 - Sankeerna (nonuplets).
The percussionists often used to extemporize and innovate the performing patterns and Korvais in various “Gathis” to exhibit their competency.
After this, the duration of the individual solo would come down when it enters the “Kurappu” section which would typically start with one cycle of the Tala, and then half cycle, further reduced to the lease possible pattern. Many percussionists often play Kurappu with mathematical complexity as well. In the Kurappu section, the Upa Pakkom artist would mostly try to replicate the same Kurappu played by the Mridangam artist. After the Kurappu, all percussion artists would play together culminating in a grand finale followed by Morai and Korvai and then the main artist resumes where he or she left off. In fact Morai and Korvai are also an indication to the main artist and violinist that the percussionists are concluding the Thani and after the third repeat of the Korvai, be ready to continue the recital and conclude recital of the Kriti.
How long will be the Thani Avarthanam?
In a typical concert of total 2.5 hours to 3 hours duration, the Thani would usually be presented for 10 minutes to 30 minutes by the percussionists (though there is no hard and fast rule on the time duration).
Can there be more than one Thani Avarthanam in a concert?
Yes, there can be. This purely depends on the main artist. The main artist can allow any number of Thani Avarthanams. Maha Vidwan Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar used to allow up to four Thani Avarthanams in a concert. Now a day, apart from the Main Kriti where Thani is played, and if the main artist presents an RTP (Ragam Thanam Pallavi), a short Thani also will be played.
Who introduced Thani Avarthanam in a concert?
There are no written sources which would answer this. However it is believed that Maha Vidwans Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyyengar and Palghat Mani Iyer are the architects of modern Karnatic concert structure. Together they organized the concert as a whole as it presented currently. Accordingly, Thani was also introduced as a module which would start as a continuation of the main composition.
