Just doing a last minute reminder to fellow usamericans to file your taxes before April 17th 2024, with a high recommendation you use the IRS free filing or one of the affiliate programs they have if you make less than 79k a year (because the more people use it the better, fuck Inuit TurboTax & H&R Block)
You will need to make an ID.me account which isn't really any more difficult than making any other login (you will need your SSN tho), but the filing itself was so simple it took me no time at all and was way faster than using TurboTax because the IRS site doesn't waste a bunch of time doing needless animations to "show your progress" while filing
I filed my taxes a week ago and I've already gotten both my federal and state returns direct deposited. I've never gotten my returns so quickly, it has never been so easy to file, and if people continue to use this service from the IRS it'll only get better.
Also important things to remember with tax season! The IRS will never call you with an automated response about your taxes, those are scam calls just ignore them, and if you do make a mistake while filing don't worry too much because the IRS will just quietly fix your return and either mail you the check/bill or direct deposit it. Happy filing! You got this!

Turbotax is blitzing Congress for the right to tax YOU
Tumblr media
Every year, Americans spend billions on tax prep services, paying a heavily concentrated industry of giant, wildly profitable firms to send the IRS information it already has. Despite the fact that most other rich countries have a far more efficient process, many Americans believe that adopting this process here is either impossible, immoral, or both.
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/20/turbotaxed/#counter-intuit
That puts tax preparation in the same bucket as other forms of weird American exceptionalism — like the belief that we’re too untrustworthy to have universal healthcare, or that we’re so violent that we must all have assault rifles to protect ourselves from one another.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with how they do it in, say, the UK, here’s how it works: your employer submits all of your paystubs to the tax authorities; likewise the custodians of your pension and other people who send you money. The tax authority also knows about your major deductions, like your kids or other dependents.
The tax authority uses this information to fill in a tax return for you and they mail it to you. It’s simple and easy to understand. If they missed some information, or if your tax status has changed, or if you’ve got new deductions, you can amend this return — or throw it away and start over by yourself or with a tax professional.
For the vast majority of Britons, filing their tax returns takes a few minutes once a year, and it’s free. For the minority who don’t fit the standard form, the system works like it does in the US — you either tackle it alone, or do it with professional help.
The IRS could easily do the same thing. Even in a world where many of us are being “casualized” and have income coming in as independent contractors, the IRS knows about it, thanks to the 1099 form. Sure, the IRS might make mistakes, and if you’re worried about that, you can either manually review the precompleted return or pay someone to do it.
It’s a no-brainer, or it would be — if it wasn’t for decades of lobbying by the massively concentrated tax-prep industry — wildly profitable corporate giants like HR Block and Intuit, the parent company of Turbotax, who spent 20 years lobbying congress, spending millions to ensure that Americans would have to pay the Turbotax tax in order to pay their income tax.
https://www.propublica.org/article/inside-turbotax-20-year-fight-to-stop-americans-from-filing-their-taxes-for-free
The tax-prep industry couldn’t have done this on their own — their astroturf campaigns were joined by a grassroots of useful idiots, betwetters like Grover Norquist and his acolytes, who openly demand that tax preparation be as difficult and painful as possible, to drum up support for their campaign to “get the US government down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub.”
These extremists are joined by many independent tax-prep specialists, who are seemingly convinced that every taxpayer has 11 dependents, four different kinds of pension savings, and six all-cash side-hustles, two of them international. Some people do have complicated taxes — as a writer with income from all over the world, I’m one of them — but most people don’t.
The point of getting the IRS to send you pre-populated tax returns isn’t to deny you the opportunity to pay excellent, knowledgeable tax-prep specialists if you need them — it’s to spare most of us from the needless expense of paying Intuit and HR Block to perform the rote form-filling by which the rake in billions in profits.
In reality, the campaign to defund the IRS isn’t — and will never be — about helping “the little guy.” As Propublica’s IRS Files demonstrate, the defunded, shriveled IRS is a billionaire’s plaything, which is why America’s top 400 earners pay less tax than you do:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/04/13/taxes-are-for-the-little-people/#leona-helmsley-2022
The commonsense utility of the IRS supplying you with prepopulated returns is so obvious that the tax-prep industry has had to really work to hold it at bay. The most successful scam was Freefile, a program cooked up by the tax-prep cartel that claimed it would provide free tax-prep to low-income Americans.
Freefile was a literal fraud: Intuit and its co-monopolists used a raft of deceptive “dark patterns” to trick people — students, veterans, retirees, and the poorest among us — into paying for services that they were entitled to use for free. Almost no one managed to find and use the Freefile offerings they’d hidden in a locked filing cabinet in a disused subbasement behind a sign reading “Beward Of the Leopard.”
This was so obviously crooked that the companies were eventually forced to give it up, but they weren’t done — their eye-watering, voluminous terms of service contained buried binding arbitration clauses that prohibited the people they ripped off from suing them:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/02/24/uber-for-arbitration/#nibbled-to-death-by-ducks
Despite — or, more realistically, because of — the rising fury at the tax-prep industry’s years of unchecked corruption, Intuit has actually increased its lobbying spending this year: Open Secrets reports that in 2022, Intuit showered lawmakers with a record $3.5m:
https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2023/02/turbotax-parent-company-intuit-is-pouring-more-money-than-ever-into-lobbying-amid-push-for-free-government-run-tax-filing/
Their target? The $15m that the Inflation Reduction Act allocated to the Treasury Department to explore free tax filing. Intuit’s line is that this would be “a waste of taxpayer money” and a “conflict of interest” — the same tired boomer nonsense that Norquist has been shoveling since the Reagan administration. Once again, the proposal isn’t to ban Intuit from offering tax prep services — it’s to create a public option that lets people freely choose to pay for tax prep if they think they need it. It’s a breathtaking act of paternalism to claim that we’re all sheeple, too stupid to spot the IRS’s greedy attacks on our pocketbooks.
Here’s a choice quote from Intuit: “Creating a government run tax preparation program would be a waste of taxpayer dollars and further disenfranchise low income taxpayers. A direct to IRS tax prep system is a multi-billion dollar solution looking for a problem.”
https://www.businessinsider.com/turbotax-free-tax-filing-biden-inflation-reduction-act-hr-block-2023-1
Unsaid: the tax prep industry rakes in billions of dollars from American taxpayers every single year. The $44.8m the cartel has spent lobbying against free filing since 1998 is a fantastic investment — for them. The dividends they reap from it come out of all of our pockets.
Another bargain? Hiring ex-government officials to work for Intuit, lobbying their former colleagues:
https://www.opensecrets.org/federal-lobbying/clients/lobbyists?cycle=2022&id=D000026667&t0-Revolving+Door+Profiles=Revolving+Door+Profiles
Or, as Senator Elizabeth Warren bluntly put it, “adroit influence peddling”:
https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2022/06/members-of-congress-call-for-an-investigation-of-intuits-lobbying-practices-amid-mounting-turbotax-controversies/
The neoliberal economists’ theory of regulatory capture is a kind of helpless nihilism, grounded in the Public Choice Theory doctrine that says that regulators will always be captured, so we should just get rid of regulators or make them as weak as possible, so they won’t become cordyceps-ridden puppets of the industries they oversee:
https://doctorow.medium.com/regulatory-capture-59b2013e2526
But capture isn’t inevitable. Sure, if you have a referee that’s weaker than the teams, you’ll never get a fair game — nevermind what happens when the ref either used to work for one of the teams or is sure of a cushy job with them when the season’s over. If you want a small government, you need small corporations — need to block the anticompetitive mergers and predatory conduct that lets companies grow so large that they can fit their regulators into the little change pocket in their blue-jeans.
https://doctorow.medium.com/small-government-fd5870a9462e
Anyone who lived through witchhunts, torture and mass surveillance after 9/11 has good reason to want their government small enough to be accountable — but a doctrine of small governments and giant corporations is a plutocrat’s charter — a recipe for regulatory capture so grotesque it is indistinguishable from farce.
[Image ID: An ogrish, tophatted, cigar-chomping giant holds the US Capitol building aloft contemptuously, pinched between the thumb and forefinger of a white-gloved hand. He stands at a podium bearing the Turbotax checkmark logo, yanking a lever in the form of a golden dollar-sign. He stands before a IRS 1040 tax form.]

Jack Gohkle & the Oakland Golden Grizzlies
The basketball world is at the edge of its seat with the buzz of March Madness. This is the time of year when NCAA basketball programs around the country are in awe of the men’s and women’s organizations chasing after the National Championship. Those who have won their respective conference tournaments have been offered a seed into the March Madness tournament, but it is a single-elimination format in the National tournament.
The tournament began on March 17th, 2024. As of today, March 27th, 2024, men’s and women’s divisions are now left with 16 remaining teams. This point in the tournament is also known as the “Sweet-16.” The finals are set to be televised on April 7th for the women’s finals, and the men’s finals are set for April 8th.
A big win this year from hot-shot shooter Jack Gohlke from the University of Oakland based out of Auburn Hills, Michigan. He made national news by upsetting the Kentucky Wildcats on Thursday, March 21st, with a team-high 10 three-point field goals. This record-setting performance hit the internet by storm, giving Gohlke so much exposure that he received multiple N.I.L. deals with companies such as TurboTax and Buffalo Wild Wings.
“Connective blogging,” as per Rheingold, uses blogs to engage in conversations, share ideas, and create networks for those of similar interests. This is effective through the cross-use of subject topics where bloggers can actively connect and participate in broader discussions compared to only receiving broadcasted information.
Now, regarding the case of Jack Gohlke from the University of Oakland, He made history and captured the hearts of college basketball fans worldwide with his exceptional performance. The connective conversations of bloggers online show how this man made so many endorsements and has received national attention. The news headline was a mere post about his accomplishments, but through collaboration and curation of people sharing this news, Jack Gohlke is now a national hero.

On Managed Expectations...
At this point about a third of my followers, the legit vetted ones who look like real blogs, showed up because of my ‘fuck turbotax’ post.
And that’s legit, because turbotax can get fucked, but let’s manage a couple of expectations.
This is my main blog. It’s been a shitpost, fandom, and fanfiction blog since 2013. That’s the majority of what you’ll find. There’s also always been rants about various work that I’ve done, from the home caregiving job to the tutoring jobs to teaching college and university to tax examiner at the IRS. Those rants are fairly ubiquitous.
The ‘turbotax can get fucked with their inaccuracies and their lobbying and their fleecing you out of your refunds’ post was one such rant.
Yes they do fleece you out of your refund by the way. Never ever EVER accept money in anticipation of getting your refund. You’re usually walking home with $1000 while your tax preparer pockets the other UP TO 5 GRAND you should be getting but never see because of their shady ass.
If I’m sent tax questions I’ll generally answer when I get around to them but I work nights and just three weeks ago I accepted a promotion to being technical lead for a team. The team of new hires I’ve been training the past 4 months. At least I know who trained them lol it me. New position starts TODAY so if you send an ask do not expect immediate answers. Also do not ask tax questions the weekend before April 18th because you’re unlikely to get an answer in time.
If you’re here for just the taxes? Lol enjoy the Dragon Age and Star Wars fanfiction in the meantime. It gon get weird.
If you’re here for just the fanfiction? Taxes and life and work only take up a post or three here and there. If it gets too much I will start managing things more closely.
If you’re some right wing nut job who thinks I’m part of some IRS army who’s invading small businesses and crushing your right to be a jackass? Sux to be u bud, I guess you hate refunds, I got a block button right there and an Inspector General’s office to report your ass to should you turn domestic terrorist.

How to find your Trusted Accountant for a successful 2024 tax season?
Tumblr media
Many people can file their income tax themselves using software like TurboTax, UFile or ProTax, but not everybody is comfortable doing so. In addition, this requires having basic knowledge of provincial and federal tax rules and having enough time to spent preparing your tax return, with the possibility of making some mistakes and not claiming all tax credits you are eligible for. That’s why I strongly advise to hire a professional accountant. Read More: https://cpainmontreal.com/blog/how-to-find-your-trusted-accountant-for-a-successful-2024-tax-season/

How Do Individuals Do Tax Preparation in New Jersey?
Tax preparation is an annual ritual that requires careful attention and adherence to state-specific regulations. For residents of New Jersey, understanding the nuances of tax preparation is essential to ensure compliance and maximize potential refunds. So, let us explore how individuals in the Garden State can effectively prepare their taxes, covering key considerations, available resources, and the specificities of New Jersey tax laws.
Understanding New Jersey Taxation:
Before diving into the tax preparation process, it's crucial to grasp the tax landscape in New Jersey. The state imposes a variety of taxes, including income tax, sales tax, property tax, and corporate tax. New Jersey's income tax rates are progressive, with higher rates applying to higher income levels. Additionally, the state allows various deductions and exemptions, and staying informed about these can significantly impact your overall tax liability.
Key Considerations for New Jersey Tax Preparation:
Gather Necessary Documents: Start by collecting all relevant documents, including W-2 forms, 1099s, receipts, and any other records related to income, expenses, and deductions.
Determine Filing Status: Your filing status (single, married, head of household, etc.) affects your tax rates and deductions. Ensure that you choose the correct filing status for an accurate tax return.
Explore Tax Deductions and Credits: New Jersey offers various deductions and credits, such as the Homestead Benefit Program and the Senior Freeze Property Tax Reimbursement. Take advantage of these opportunities to reduce your tax liability.
File Electronically: While not mandatory, filing your taxes electronically is often more convenient and faster than paper filing. It also reduces the risk of errors and allows for faster processing of refunds.
Consider Professional Assistance: Depending on your financial situation, seeking the assistance of a tax professional or using tax preparation software can ensure accuracy and help you navigate complex tax scenarios.
Understand Local Tax Laws: New Jersey municipalities may impose local income taxes, and it's essential to be aware of any additional taxes specific to your locality. Check with your local government or tax professional for information on local tax regulations.
Stay Informed About Changes: Tax laws are subject to change, and staying informed about updates is crucial. Regularly check the New Jersey Division of Taxation website for any changes to tax rates, deductions, or other relevant information.
Resources for New Jersey Taxpayers:
New Jersey Division of Taxation: The official website of the New Jersey Division of Taxation (https://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/) is a valuable resource for taxpayers. It provides information on tax forms, rates, and updates.
Tax Preparation Software: Popular tax preparation software such as TurboTax, H&R Block, and TaxAct can assist individuals in preparing and filing their taxes. These tools often guide users through the process, helping to identify deductions and credits.
Local Tax Assistance Programs: Some local organizations and community centers may offer tax assistance programs to help individuals with simple tax returns. Check with local agencies to see if such services are available in your area.
Navigating tax preparation in New Jersey requires a proactive approach and a solid understanding of the state's tax laws, and Tax Professionals in Somerset can help you with it.

I would like to apologize for my headcannon I sent in, I do want to make friends here, so I do like your posts about Sampo. When I looked on your blog I did not notice a DNI list or warnings on your caard, although I just notice you don't like ship content. I do have a hard time reading. Even though I didn't sent one in about ships, I did sent in one relating to romance. It isn't like I don't have AroAce or Aro or Ace friends,, I am also questioning myself if I am demi-ace, but sometimes I be missing things with other people. I am sorry, genuine mistake. Here's my better headcannons, some semi sad, but mostly good. when was that kid who knew a lot of tricks with pencils like if you ask him how to twirl a pen or pencil he would be able to teach you and sometimes you see him where he is holding a pen he can be seen stimming with it. Avoids turbotax and any bad tax company, in fact if you mention that to him he will see him look annoyed still even before turning to a life of crime. Used to work at a car dealership as his earlier job or as a commercial voice actor, door to door sales man, I.E how he got the voice. He don't drink as often or do it at all mainly because he is on the run, but I always say addiction is a investment, as in he want to avoid that. His place on the outside, if he does have a cabin, is shabby af but it is very clean and cozy on the inside, also fairly empty. A turn on the last headcannon, I think mostly he want friends, and feels like he is missing out on his youth. Cannot beat Detroit people at their own game. Can he cook? yes, but does he mainly eat sausages because it can be stored easily? yes, does he own a sausage machine? yes. He is also HRS version of the Ordinary Sausage channel, he just thinks it is funny plus it gives him money. Can't dance for the life of him, I don't see him as a expert pro dancer, but he still dances because it makes him happy a bit :] because he is a silly guy. Genuine to care, like if you deal with him then he won't feel bad because he is distanced most likely. But if he mess up badly with someone who mostly didn't involve themselves and he knows you on some level he would try to make it up by subtle gifts. Because he is THE type to feel awkward about apologizing because he feels like he is lying :[ To end on a good note, he can cook some mean Hotcakes/Pancakes.
hey please don’t worry! I don’t blame anyone, after all I never mentioned anything publicly about not liking ships and romance in general, naturally majority of the people who follow me wouldn’t have known and I can’t fault them for it, I was referring to certain people who despite being told how I felt still proceeded to push the topic on me and disregarded my feelings, I appreciate people for being more considerate of my boundaries.
though I’m gonna be honest I’m a little confused as to what you’re talking about? I don’t remember interacting with you before, so what are you apologizing for? and are these supposed to be Sampo headcanons? I’m so sorry I’m really confused.

TurboTax Settles Lawsuit for $141 Million
Tumblr media
The New York Attorney General has stated that TurboTax will be sending approximately $141 million to American taxpayers as part of a court settlement. The agreement was reached last year by Intuit, the parent company of TurboTax, after they were accused of misleading their tax clients by charging money for services that could have been obtained at no cost. A back taxes attorney or any attorney familiar with such services would probably agree that customers should be steered away from paying for any type of help that is otherwise available for free.
Allegations of Deceptive Trade Practices
Although Intuit did not agree to any wrongdoing, it is alleged that they used unfair and deceptive trade practices to take money from clients when free options were available. The settlement terms included Intuit’s agreement to suspend the “Free, Free, Free” ad campaign being run by TurboTax and make restitution to approximately 4.4 million taxpayers who utilized the Free Edition of TurboTax from 2016 to 2018.
Direct payments will go to customers who are impacted by the alleged deception. Such individuals can expect to receive an automatic payment of approximately $30 for each year that they paid for TurboTax services that were then touted as free.
New York Attorney General Makes Statement
An IRS tax attorney in San Jose has learned of an announcement made by Leticia James, New York Attorney General. James announced that throughout May, checks will be sent to former TurboTax customers, and stated that millions of low income Americans fell prey to the deceptive and predatory marketing practices of TurboTax and were subsequently cheated when all they were trying to do was abide by the law and file their taxes.
Deception Alleged by a 2019 ProPublica Report
Intuit does offer a free edition of TurboTax for filers who are submitting what is referred to by the company as a “simple return.” However, only approximately one third of US taxpayers qualify for this “freemium” product, which according to James, was marketed aggressively. Meanwhile, “Free File,” the Internal Revenue Service’s own free product is available to approximately 70 percent of filers.
The investigation was sparked by a 2019 A ProPublica report, which claimed that executives at Intuit were well aware that customers were being deceived.
Intuit Denies Wrongdoing
According to San Jose tax lawyers, all 50 states and the District of Columbia signed the settlement agreement once it was reached. General Counsel Kerry McLean and Intuit Executive Vice President stated in a blog post that they were pleased to have reached resolution.
McLean pointed out, however, that neither TurboTax nor Intuit admitted to any wrongdoing, and stated that the companies were dedicated to continuing to serve the needs of American taxpayers in the future. McLean also claimed that Intuit and TurboTax were always fair and clear with their clients concerning various services, and that over the last eight years, almost 100 million taxpayers filed their returns free of charge using Intuit’s products.
It’s always wise for American taxpayers to consult a tax professional or back taxes attorney to discover the best option for filing tax returns and paying any outstanding tax bills.

Tips for Doing Your Taxes on Your Own
Filing taxes can seem daunting, especially if you’ve never done it. However, doing your taxes on your own can save you money on professional fees and empower you to take control of your finances. Here are some tips for doing your taxes on your own:
Gather all necessary documents: Before you begin, gather all the required documents, such as your W-2 forms, 1099 forms, and receipts for deductible expenses. This will make the process smoother and ensure you get all critical information.
Choose the right tax software: Many tax software options exist, such as TurboTax and H&R Block. Choose the one for your needs and budget. Ensure the software includes all necessary forms and schedules for your tax situation.
Read instructions carefully: Each tax form and schedule has specific instructions. Read them carefully to ensure you correctly fill out each section. Research it online or consult the software’s help section for more clarification.
Understand deductions and credits: Deductions and credits lower your tax bills or increase your refund. Ensure you understand which deductions and credits apply to your situation and how to claim them correctly.
Double-check your work: After completing your tax return, double-check it for errors or omissions. Even small mistakes can cause problems down the line. Most software programs have a feature that checks for errors and alerts you to potential issues.
File on time: The deadline for filing taxes is typically April 15th. Make sure you file on time to avoid penalties and interest charges. If you can’t file on time, file for an extension. Remember that an extension only gives you more time to file, not pay.
Keep records: Keep a copy of your tax return and all supporting documents for at least three years. This will come in handy if you’re ever audited or need to reference your tax information in the future.
Consider professional help: If your tax situation is complicated or you need help with how to proceed, seek professional help. A tax professional can help ensure you’re claiming deductions and credits and help you avoid mistakes that could result in penalties or interest charges.
Doing your taxes may be satisfying, but it takes close attention to detail and an eagerness to learn. You may ensure a simple and effective tax filing procedure by paying attention to these pointers. Remember, if you’re unsure about anything, seek help from a tax professional or consult the software’s help section.
