The wrangling between Tehran and Baku has escalated since Iran held military exercises on its border with Azerbaijan last month, including drills on crossing the Aras River, which forms part of the frontier. Simultaneously, Iran opened a consulate in Syunik, the southernmost Armenian province that borders Iran and is at the center of the tensions. [...]
Apprehension is rife in Tehran that Azerbaijan, emboldened by its victory over Armenia in a 2020 territorial war, seeks to redraw borders by taking control of a strip of territory across Syunik, which separates Azerbaijan proper to the east and Nakhchivan to the west. As part of the cease-fire terms, Armenia pledged to allow transportation links between Azerbaijan proper and Nakhchivan — a route that Baku calls the Zangezur corridor and has threatened to secure by force if need be. Iran worries that Azerbaijani control of the strip could cut its border connection with Armenia. For Turkey, it would mean a direct land link with Azerbaijan via neighboring Nakhchivan and a route to Central Asia bypassing Iran.
Turkey’s military support was crucial for Azerbaijan’s gains in the war with Armenia. The two nations share common ethnic roots and language and enjoy close political and economic bonds. Azerbaijanis are called also Azerbaijani Turks and the two countries describe their bond as “one nation, two states.”
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said Nov. 8 the army was ready to defend the country’s interests, referring to Iran. “Those who conduct military exercises in support of Armenia on our border should know this as well. Nobody can scare us,” he added.[...]
In further finger-shaking at Tehran, Aliyev stressed the need to protect the rights and security of millions of Azerbaijanis “who unfortunately live outside the borders of Azerbaijan” — a reference to the large Azerbaijani minority in Iran — as he addressed the Nov. 11 summit of the Organization of Turkic States.
The media war, meanwhile, crossed more lines. In what Tehran sees as a separatist plot, the Azerbaijani media have revived discourse about a “united Azerbaijan” and references to “Southern Azerbaijan” — a term with irredentist connotations for Iran’s predominantly Azerbaijani northern provinces. Such rhetoric had been shelved since the overthrow of nationalist leader Abulfaz Elchibey in 1993.
Mahmudali Chehregani, the exiled leader of the South Azerbaijan National Awakening Movement, who has long been a persona non grata in Baku, now speaks on state television, vowing that “Greater Azerbaijan will bring the end of the hateful and chauvinist mullah regime” in Iran. His movement advocates the secession of “South Azerbaijan” from Iran and espouses the motto “Russians, Persians and Armenians are the enemy of Turks.”
In another example, Caliber.az, a website linked to the Baku government, reported, “The time has come: South Azerbaijan must secede from Iran,” while a TV presenter saluted “South Azerbaijan” as she removed her headscarf while presenting the weather for Tabriz, the main Azerbaijani-majority city in northern Iran.
During a visit to Baku shortly after Azerbaijan’s victory over Armenia in 2020, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan infuriated Tehran by reciting a poem lamenting the 19th century partition of Azerbaijan. Last month, Azerbaijan’s state broadcaster aired videos of people of various ages reciting the same poem, while the presenter said that Erdogan “sparked resistance” as “more than 30 million people living in South Azerbaijan rose up after [his recital of] the poem.” [...]
Azerbaijan further angered Iran on Nov. 18 with its decision to open an embassy in Tel Aviv, a move that comes atop its growing defense cooperation with Israel. [...]
In their meeting in July, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei told Erdogan that any plan that could block Iran’s border with Armenia was unacceptable. And President Ibrahim Raisi cautioned Aliyev in October that Iran would not tolerate “any change in historical borders, regional geopolitics and Iran-Armenia transit routes.”

[ad_1] The victory of the coalition led by Benjamin Netanyahu within the "Israeli" elections got here not too long ago a number of days after the restoration of Turkish-"Israeli" relations, and the renewal of an envoy for every of them to the opposite, which raised questions on Netanyahu's place. place on the restored relationships and the possibilities of persevering with this path begun and accomplished in his absence. Cautious convergence Relations between Turkey and the occupation state deteriorated after Turkey withdrew its ambassador from Tel Aviv and declared Israel's ambassador persona non grata in Might 2018, in protest towards the occupation killing dozens of Palestinians taking part within the return marches, in addition to the switch of the US Embassy to Jerusalem. Nevertheless, Turkey has sought later, and for the reason that finish of 2020, to enhance its relations with a variety of regional events with which its relations have seen rigidity and decline in recent times, together with Israel. not as straightforward as Ankara had anticipated because of the skepticism of the "Israeli" safety and army institution about President Al-Turki's intentions and objectives to develop relations with him. Turkish declarations regarding relations with "Israel" fulfill the latter at a minimal, beginning with the priority to develop and strengthen them, passing by means of "making an allowance for the sensitivities of every one". After a number of indicators from Ankara about its want to enhance relations, the primary contact was made by phone between Erdogan and his "Israeli" counterpart Herzog an entire 12 months in the past, in November 2021. Over a full 12 months , the communication between the 2 sides was repeated within the type of cellphone calls between Erdogan on the one hand and Herzog Lapid and Bennett on the opposite, culminated with Herzog's go to to Ankara and his assembly with Erdogan in March final, adopted by a go to by the Minister of International Affairs of every occasion to the opposite . On the finish of the 12 months, Erdogan met Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid in New York on the sidelines of UN conferences, earlier than appointing an envoy for every occasion to the opposite, then Erdogan acquired the Minister of Benny Gantz protection in Ankara. Netanyahu, along with his character, his statements and his insurance policies, was an impediment to the progress of relations between the 2 events, and Ankara held him and his authorities answerable for the decline of relations with him. Due to this fact, its defeat in final 12 months's elections was a chance for Ankara to hunt to enhance its relations, and it doesn't have good relations with the Turkish President, who attaches explicit significance to the private dimension between politicians. Quite the opposite, it's potential to say that the 2 events intentionally exchanged ambassadors and stabilized the course of relations between them earlier than the final Knesset elections, with the purpose of setting up a fait accompli that will be troublesome to undo in anticipation of Netanyahu's victory, which was what was. Netanyahu, after his victory wherein he appointed him to type the federal government, does he surrender the trail of rapprochement with Ankara? Netanyahu victory It appears unlikely, however as an alternative it's anticipated that the trail of rapprochement between the 2 events will proceed, albeit at a special tempo. For its half, Turkey doesn't cover its want to advertise rapprochement with "Israel" after Netanyahu's victory, as said by the Turkish president in his first assertion after the announcement of the preliminary outcomes of the elections. However, it doesn't appear that the developments of the Palestinian query - or in different phrases, the occupation insurance policies towards the Palestinians - are an impediment to the continuation of relations, after Erdogan spoke of the separation between his nation's relations with "Israel" and its coverage towards the Palestinians.
One can not say that Ankara is pleased with the outcomes of the current Israeli elections. That is evident within the Turkish President's assertion instantly after the election, which was devoid of any congratulations to Netanyahu (the congratulations got here days later), and in Erdogan's personal reception of "Israeli" Protection Minister Benny Gantz. a number of days earlier than the elections, which could be learn as an try to extend his possibilities. Nevertheless, this doesn't imply Ankara's asceticism in growing relations, quite that the Turkish president threw the ball into Netanyahu's courtroom after expressing his nation's adherence to the trail. However, there's something totally different within the path of improvement of relations between the 2 sides this time in comparison with earlier ones, and a very powerful factor is that it falls underneath a Turkish path of calm and of rapprochement with multiple regional occasion, and after the normalization agreements between the occupation and a variety of Arab nations, and with out the implementation by any occasion of the circumstances on the opposite aspect, and within the gentle of the manifest state of instability of the occupying state, which signifies that the present rapprochement might be extra secure and extra sturdy than its predecessors. One of many manifestations of this distinction is the sending by Erdogan of a congratulatory message for his victory within the elections. However, Netanyahu returns to energy underneath utterly totally different circumstances from his earlier premiership, particularly with regard to the repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian battle. Relations with Russia and the private dimension with Putin are removed from the earlier interval, and the battle and the American place on it, in addition to the place of the occupying energy supporting Ukraine, don't go away massive areas of maneuver in entrance of Netanyahu. Added to this are a number of avenues of cooperation or problems with frequent curiosity between the 2 camps, in the beginning the Russian-Ukrainian battle (once more), the Syrian query, the Iranian concern, gasoline within the jap Mediterranean. coincidence of the go to of the Azerbaijani Protection Minister to Ankara with that of Gantz. Though Turkey, by means of its International Minister, has reiterated its rejection of the occupying state's situation for the event of relations, represented by the expulsion of Palestinian leaders who declare to reside there and work towards it from its territory; This didn't forestall her from being acquired by the "Israeli" Minister of Tourism, a number of days after the elections, with an apparent which means. Additionally, the Turkish declarations issued regarding relations with "Israel" fulfill the latter at the very least, beginning with the priority to develop and strengthen them, passing by means of "making an allowance for the sensitivities of every", and never ending not by Erdogan's assertion concerning the separation between relations with Tel Aviv and its insurance policies and practices towards the Palestinians, though the latter assertion has two seemingly contradictory meanings. As a result of these statements embody a brand new variable for Ankara that didn't exist prior to now, because the deterioration of relations between the 2 events within the period of justice and improvement, in 2010 after which in 2018, was straight linked to the insurance policies of occupation in the direction of the Palestinians. Because of this relations between the 2 events can be stronger within the foreseeable future than they had been earlier than, on the one hand, and that Turkey's place on the Palestinian query typically and on the resistance factions particularly is open to potentialities of relative change sooner or later. Along with all of the above, as sensible proof, the cellphone name between Erdogan and Netanyahu after the latter was formally appointed to type the federal
government in "Israel", who got here on his initiative to supply his condolences for the assault which came about within the Taksim district of Istanbul, throughout which Erdogan as soon as once more congratulated him on his victory within the elections. Erdogan mentioned within the attraction to Netanyahu that relations between the 2 sides “have entered a brand new stage because of the sturdy will they've proven”, and that there's a frequent curiosity in “pursuing and strengthening relations on a long-lasting foundation, based mostly on mutual pursuits and on the idea of the consideration of every for the sensitivities of the opposite". Due to this fact, in conclusion, there doesn't appear to be any basic cause that may push Netanyahu to forego the step of exchanging ambassadors, not to mention Ankara to take action, and subsequently the course of relations between the 2 events shouldn't be a candidate for retirement, hiatus or elimination. There doesn't appear to be any actual objection to the event of Israel's relations with Turkey from Greece, particularly since these answerable for the previous have confirmed greater than as soon as that it doesn't doesn't substitute for privileged relations with the latter, neither politically nor as regards the jap Mediterranean gasoline. Nevertheless, then again, Netanyahu is not going to be as enthusiastic as others in Tel Aviv concerning relations with Turkey, particularly concerning the direct relationship with Erdogan, comparable to Herzog, Lapid, Bennett and Gantz. Due to this fact, relations between the 2 sides are prone to stay at their present degree, with the opportunity of gradual and gradual improvement, so long as there are not any sudden main developments, particularly on the extent of the Palestinian concern. Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradawi :1926-2022
Tumblr media
The Muslim world On Monday lost one of the most prominent and influential religious scholars of our time. He is Dr. Sheikh Yousef Al Qaradawi, widely viewed as one of the most prestigious Muslim A’lem in the Arab world. He died peacefully in Doha, Qatar, at the age of 96.
Muhammed al-Hassan Walid al-Dido al-Shanqiti, a famous Mauritanian scholar, described Qaradawi as “one of the greatest Muslim scholars in the 20th century.”
He called him “heir of the Prophet Muhammed in our time.’
Fahmi Huwaidi, a noted Egyptian intellectual,  said “Qaradawi was greater than all words.”
The eminent Egyptian scholar joins a constellation of top Muslim scholars whose legacies shaped intellectual currents throughout the Muslim world for over a century. We are talking about luminaries such as Abul Ala Maududi of Pakistan, Abu al-Hasan Nadwi of India, Malik Bin Nabi of Algeria, Sayed Qutob and Muhammad Gazali of Egypt and Said Nursî of Turkey.
Qaradawi was born in the village Saft Turab in the Gharbiya province in Egypt on September 9, 1926. He completed the memorization of the Holy Quran before he reached ten years of age.
He received the international Diploma in the discipline of Sharia in 1954.  Several years later, he received a doctorate from al-Azhar, the prestigious Sunni Muslim Academy in Caro.
Fearless A’lem dedicated to promoting Islam
Qaradawi exemplified the character of a fearless A’alem who practised the paramount Muslim religious duty of al-Amr Bilm’arouf and an-Nahy anil Munkar,  (promotion of virtue and prevention of vice).
His Sharia-inspired activism prompted the regime of former Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser to incarcerate him three times during which he was subjected to severe torture and maltreatment.
The harsh persecution which Qaradawi underwent, along with thousands of Muslim Brotherhood followers and supporters, forced the eminent scholar to seek safe haven in Qatar where he remained until his death on Monday.
Qaradawi was a vocal critic of autocratic Arab dictatorships which often use Islam to justify their tyrannical rules and strangulation of human rights and civil liberties.
In 2015, an Egyptian court acting on instructions from the Sissi Junta sentenced him to death in absentia for affiliation with the Brotherhood and opposition to the despotic Sissi regime.
Two years earlier, Sissi had carried out a military coup, toppling President Dr. Muhammed Mursi, the only democratically elected ruler in Egypt’s history. Mursi was a member of the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. It is widely believed that the coup was carried out in collusion with the U.S. and Israel, with a strong financial backing from Saudi Arabia and UAE.
Similarly, the governments of Saudi Arabia and UAE barred Qaradawi from entering their territories, accusing him of apostasy for arguing that Islam and dictatorship are totally incompatible.
Al-Qaradawi was a strong supporter of the popular uprising against Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, who effectively destroyed Syria, killed hundreds of thousands of his own citizens, occasionally using chemical weapons,  and forced nearly half of the Syrian people to leave their homes, all in order to remain power.
Predictably, Al-Qaradawi supported the so-called Arab Spring uprisings in countries such as Egypt, Syria, Libya and Tunisia. He also strongly supported  Muslim resistance and liberation movements in places like Palestine, and Kashmir.
His strong advocacy of Palestinian rights and fierce rejection of normalization between some autocratic Arab regimes  and Israel  prompted the apartheid Zionist entity to call him the “Sheikh of Terror.” Moreover,  powerful Zionist circles in the West instigated the U.S. as well as several European states to consider him a persona non grata.
Advocate of Muslim Unity
Al-Qaradawi was a vocal prominent proponent of Muslim unity and pan-Islamic cooperation. He repeatedly argued that Allah wanted Muslims to be one Umma, not 55 states.
On many occasions, he argued that Muslim disunity, coupled with parochial secular nationalism,  which he labelled as an advanced degree of tribalism, was responsible for the enduring weakness of Muslims around the world, including the relentless persecution meted out to millions of Muslims in places like Palestine, India and Myanmar.
Qaradawi is credited for founding the International Federation of Muslim Religious Scholar (IFNRS), based in Qatar. This body, which includes prominent religious scholars from all over the Muslim world issues Fatwas or religious edicts dealing with novel subjects that were not known in the past.
Moreover, the council strives to find practical Islamic solutions bridging the gap between classical Islamic judgments, derived from the Holy Quran and Sunna of the Prophet and the requirements of  modernity.
Dr. Al-Qaradawil was a religious scholar, thinker, philosopher and poet. He enriched the Muslim library with as many as 177 books. Some of his famous books include “Halal and Haram in Islam,” and Fiqh Az-Zaka (the philosophy and understanding of Alms). May Sheikh Al-Qaradawi be in the company of prophets, saints, martyrs and righteous people in Jannat al-Ferdous.

The Cultural Association of the Pomaks in Greece’s northern city of Xanthi issued a damning statement recently, ahead of Sunday’s private visit of Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu to Western Thrace.
The Association said that Cavusoglu is not welcome in their region and declared him a ”persona non grata.”
The reason for this hostile reaction on behalf of the Pomaks is the fact that Cavusoglu and the Turkish government insist on calling the Greek Muslim minority of Western Thrace ”Turkish.”
”When we died for these lands, we did not know [speak] Turkish,” their statement says.
”Over the recent decades, the Pomaks and Roma of Thrace have been subjected to a cultural and linguistic genocide by Turkish settlers,” the damning statement continues, only to add that ”the minority is one and it is defined by the Treaty of Lausanne; it is Muslim and it consists of communities that have only one thing in common: Their religion!”
Who are the Pomaks
The Pomaks are Bulgarian-speaking Muslims inhabiting Bulgaria, northeastern Greece, and mainly northwestern Turkey.
Approximately 220,000 Pomaks live in Bulgaria and are known there as ”Bulgarian Muslims.”
In Greece, their number is approximately 50,000 people, who live primarily in villages across Western Thrace known as ”Pomakohoria,” meaning the villages of the Pomaks.
The term ”Pomak” has also been used as a wider designation, including also the Slavic Muslim populations of North Macedonia and Albania, apart from these of Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey.
The Pomaks speak various Bulgarian dialects and those spoken in Greece and Turkey are referred to as the Pomak language, which the Greek authorities now try to preserve with minority schools in Western Thrace teaching it.
The community in Greece is commonly fluent in the Greek language, and a large number of them have a strong ethnic Greek identity despite their religious difference compared to Greece’s prevalent religion, Orthodox Christianity.
However, there is also an increasing number of individuals who adopt Turkish as their first language as a result of education and family links with the Turkish people.
Cavusoglu to Visit Greece Despite Tensions
The visit of Cavusoglu to Greece on May 31 has been scheduled to hold talks with his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias, and has sparked negative reactions, mainly due to his intention to go privately to Western Thrace the day before.
The Turkish Minister confirmed his visit with the state broadcaster TRT on May 26.
Cavusoglu had said earlier this week that his talks with the Greek Foreign Minister also aim to prepare for a possible meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The visit comes more than a month after Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias held talks in Ankara where Cavusoglu and his counterpart had a war of words at a joint press conference.
The two Ministers argued in front of cameras during the press conference in a rare heated public exchange. They remained at odds over a number of issues, despite hopes that their meeting could have opened an opportunity to lessen tensions over maritime boundaries and energy exploration rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The visit of Dendias to Turkey was the first between the two nations after tensions rose to a fever pitch in 2020 over maritime boundaries and energy exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean, leading to a military buildup that featured warships from the two countries facing off.

The French divorce from Mali is increasingly becoming the rule rather than the exception. Increasingly, France’s more-than-a-century-long diplomatic dominance in Africa is ending, and with it, France’s pretension of being a major player on the world stage.
Consider the Central African Republic: One year ago, rebels in the resource-rich, former French colony threatened to sack the capital Bangui. The United Nations, which has a robust peacekeeping force in the country, stood aside, as did France. Rwanda, with one-fifth the population of France and an army less than one-tenth the size of France’s, ultimately came to the rescue and stopped the rebel advance, pushing the Islamist rebels back into the hinterlands. From the locals’ perspective, French inaction compounded a betrayal marked by late President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing’s support for local dictatorship in exchange for a supply of Central African diamonds into French coffers. Although a generation of French policymakers have believed they could loot and run roughshod over the Central Africans, they have learned that Central Africans have long memories.
Then there is Rwanda itself. While Rwanda was originally a Belgian colonial possession, France treated it as its own following the country’s 1962 independence. French policy, however, was twisted. Declassified French archival documents and an assessment of newly-available sources now show beyond any reasonable doubt direct French complicity in the 1994 anti-Tutsi genocide. France’s motives? Distrust of Rwandans seeking greater ties to the Anglophone world as well as President Juvénal Habyarimana’s willingness (under whom Hutu militants planned the anti-Tutsi Genocide) to subordinate Rwandan interests and human rights to French requests. While Hollywood successfully depicted some of the horror of the 1994 genocide, the producers omitted French advisors training and even manning checkpoints with Hutu génocidaires. It is now clear there likely would have been no genocide in Rwanda had it not been for the cynicism of French president François Mitterrand. [...]
France’s unwillingness to recognize regional competition has also taken its toll. Djibouti, for example, was once France’s strategic backstop. Until a decade ago, Djibouti was home to the 13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion. It subsequently moved to the United Arab Emirates and then back to France. Meanwhile, China has become the dominant influence in the former French colony. Nor is China alone. Turkey is using anti-French, anti-colonialist rhetoric to cultivate former French colonies across Africa. In the most infamous example, Ahmet Kavas, the Turkish ambassador to Chad, lauded Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and accused French troops fighting them of being the real terrorists. [...]
While the United States does not have a colonial legacy in Africa [citation needed], it does have a history of supporting Cold War and Global War on Terror-era human rights abuses that Washington may have forgotten but locals in various countries have not. The second is the price of complacency. France should never have allowed China to out-compete it in Djibouti, nor should it have allowed Turkey to cultivate more influence in many Francophone countries than France itself.

Biden imposes new international travel vaccine rules, lifts existing restrictions (Reuters) U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday signed an order imposing new vaccine requirements for most foreign national air travelers and lifting severe travel restrictions on China, India and much of Europe effective Nov. 8, the White House said. The White House first disclosed on Sept. 20 it would remove restrictions in early November for fully vaccinated air travelers from 33 countries. The White House confirmed that children under 18 are exempt from the new vaccine requirements as are people with some medical issues. Non-tourist travelers from nearly 50 countries with nationwide vaccination rates of less than 10% will also be eligible for exemption from the rules. Those receiving an exemption will generally need to be vaccinated within 60 days after arriving in the United States. The Biden administration also detailed requirements airlines must follow to confirm foreign travelers have been vaccinated before boarding U.S.-bound flights.
Haiti crippled by fuel shortages as gang leader demands prime minister resign (Reuters) Haiti’s streets were unusually quiet on Tuesday and gas stations remained dry as gangs blocked the entrance to ports that hold fuel stores and the country’s main gang boss demanded that Prime Minister Ariel Henry resign. Days-long fuel shortages have left Haitians with few transport options and forced the closure of some businesses. Hospitals, which rely on diesel generators to ensure electricity due to constant blackouts, may shut down as well. The situation has put further pressure on a population already struggling under a weakening economy and a wave of gang kidnappings, which include the abduction earlier this month of a group of Canadian and American missionaries. Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier, leader of the ‘G9’ coalition of gangs in the metropolitan area of the capital Port-au-Prince, said in a radio interview on Monday night that he would ensure safe passage of fuel trucks if Henry leaves office.
Erdogan drops threat to expel envoys, averting crisis with U.S. and other Western allies (Washington Post) A brewing diplomatic crisis between Turkey and 10 Western countries appeared to pass Monday after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan backed off a threat to expel their ambassadors for advocating on behalf of an imprisoned Turkish activist. The dispute spiked on Saturday when Erdogan declared the envoys, including the U.S. ambassador, to be “persona non grata” because their embassies had signed a letter calling for the release of civil society activist Osman Kavala. But on Monday, in what appeared to be a carefully choreographed exchange of gestures, the embassies of the United States, Canada and other nations that had signed the Kavala letter posted one-sentence statements on Twitter reiterating their “compliance” with diplomatic norms against interference in the internal affairs of host states. “In a new statement made by the same embassies today, the blasphemy against our country, our judiciary has been reversed,” Erdogan said later, after a cabinet meeting. The ambassadors, he added, “will be more careful in their statements.”
Japan’s Princess Mako marries commoner (AP) Japanese Princess Mako quietly married a commoner without traditional wedding celebrations Tuesday and said their marriage—delayed three years and called unfit by some—“was a necessary choice to live while cherishing our hearts.” The marriage to Kei Komuro cost Mako her royal status and she has taken her husband’s surname—the first time she has had a family name. Most Japanese women must abandon their own family names upon marriage due to a law requiring only one surname per married couple. Mako, who turned 30 three days before the marriage, is a niece of Emperor Naruhito. She and Komuro, who were classmates at Tokyo’s International Christian University, announced in September 2017 that they intended to marry the following year, but a financial dispute involving his mother surfaced two months later and the wedding was suspended. Mako is recovering from what palace doctors described earlier this month as a form of traumatic stress disorder that she developed after seeing negative media coverage about their marriage, especially attacks on Komuro. The couple will move together to New York to start a new life. “There will be different kinds of difficulties as we start our new life, but we’ll walk together as we have done so in the past,” Mako said, thanking everyone who supported the couple.
Officials: Iran behind drone attack on US base in Syria (AP) U.S. officials say they believe Iran was behind the drone attack last week at the military outpost in southern Syria where American troops are based. Officials said Monday the U.S. believes that Iran resourced and encouraged the attack, but that the drones were not launched from Iran. They were Iranian drones, and Iran appears to have facilitated their use, officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Officials said they believe the attacks involved as many as five drones laden with explosive charges, and that they hit both the U.S. side of al-Tanf garrison and the side where Syrian opposition forces stay. There were no reported injuries or deaths as a result of the attack. U.S. and coalition troops are based at al-Tanf to train Syrian forces on patrols to counter Islamic State militants. The base is also located on a road serving as a vital link for Iranian-backed forces from Tehran all the way to southern Lebanon and Israel.
The judge leading Beirut blast probe: Discreet and defiant (AP) For eight months, he has quietly investigated one of the world’s worst non-nuclear explosions with only four assistants—and a lot of powerful detractors trying to block him. In that time, Judge Tarek Bitar has become a household name in Lebanon and a staple on every news bulletin. For many Lebanese, Bitar’s investigation of last year’s massive Beirut port explosion is their only hope for truth and accountability in a country that craves both. But to the country’s entrenched political class, the enigmatic 47-year-old has turned into a nightmare. Politicians have united as they rarely do to remove him from his post, apparently deeming him a threat much greater than the country’s collapsing economy, the state’s empty coffers and burgeoning unemployment, poverty and public anger. Bitar has not shied away from summoning a dozen senior former and current government officials, some of them on charges of criminal negligence and homicide with probable intent. He issued arrest warrants for two former ministers when they refused to appear before him. He now moves around with guards.
Sisi lifts restrictions (Foreign Policy) Egypt has lifted a state of emergency in place since 2017 following the bombings of two Coptic churches. Emergency measures had been renewed every three months since, but on Monday President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said he would remove restrictions as the country had become “an oasis of security and stability in the region.”
MBS “a threat” (WaPo, CBS News, CNN) Saad Aljabri was Saudi Arabia’s No. 2 intelligence official. A close ally of U.S. intelligence since 2001, he lives in exile in Toronto. In August 2020, Aljabri filed a federal lawsuit in Washington D.C. accusing Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) of targeting him for assassination and holding two of his children hostage because he has knowledge of damaging secrets about the prince’s rise to power. Aljabri alleges in the lengthy, detailed complaint that MBS orchestrated a conspiracy to kill him in Canada that parallels the one resulting in the 2018 death and dismemberment of dissident Saudi journalist and Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi. MBS became a pariah after Khashoggi’s death; members of Congress once considered stalwart allies of the kingdom threatened to upend decades of economic and security cooperation between the two countries. The CIA later assessed that MBS likely ordered Khashoggi’s assassination personally, but President Trump gave him cover by refusing to accept the CIA’s conclusion. Trump said the crown prince had assured him he had nothing to do with what Trump called “an unacceptable and horrible crime.”      Aljabri’s lawsuit claims that MBS implanted malware on his phone and sent agents to the U.S. to find him. Once Aljabri was located, MBS sent a “hit squad” to kill him. Canadian customs officials intercepted the team and discovered they were carrying forensic tools that could have been used to dismember a corpse—a grisly reminder of the Khashoggi case. The complaint also says Saudi authorities arrested and imprisoned one of Aljabri’s sons, Omar, 22, and a daughter, Sarah, 20, “all in an effort to bait [Aljabri] back to Saudi Arabia to be killed.” Numerous U.S. elected officials and former members of the Clinton and Bush administrations urged Trump to do something to secure Aljabri’s children’s freedom; instead, Trump sought ways to protect MBS from legal liability. Sunday night, in an interview on CBS “60 Minutes,” Saad Aljabri called the Saudi crown prince a “psychopath” who “poses a threat to his people, to the Americans and to the planet.” Aljabri described watching a video of a meeting that allegedly took place in 2014 between MBS and his cousin, Mohammed bin Nayef (MBN), then the country’s head of intelligence. “He [MBS] told him [MBN], ‘I want to assassinate King Abdullah. I get a poison ring from Russia. It’s enough for me just to shake hands with him and he will be done,’” Aljabri said. “That what he say. Whether he’s just bragging or, but he said that and we took it seriously.” King Abdullah died in January 2015 at age 90, after which his half-brother, King Salman, MBS’ father, ascended to the throne.
Nones (WSJ) A new report released Monday by the Springtide Research Institute found that half of people aged 13 to 25 think that religious institutions don’t care about the issues that matter to them. This dissonance in values was one reason that just 23 percent of respondents said they attended religious services almost every week or more, which would be considerably less than the 31 percent of adults who said the same in a 2019 Pew Research Center report. By comparison, 32 percent of teens in that report identified as atheists, agnostics, or nothing in particular.
Sikh men created a lifeline using turbans and jackets to rescue hikers at a park (NPR) Two men who needed help up a steep rock in British Columbia were saved thanks to a group of Sikh men who unraveled and removed their turbans to create a makeshift rope. The steep rocks led to rough, raging waters near a waterfall. The group of five was hiking toward the waterfall when they saw that the hikers stranded on a steep rock ledge. Kuljinder Kinda, one of the Sikh men who saved them, told NBC there was no cellphone service in the area to call emergency services. After walking for 10 minutes trying to find help, the group thought of the idea to tie their jackets and turbans together. They created a makeshift rope about 33 feet long and pulled the men to safety. The action was caught on video and was widely shared on social media. The hikers were in Golden Ears Provincial Park, one of the largest parks in British Columbia with extensive trails that lead to waterfalls.

Sassoli said on Twitter on Saturday that the decision "will not intimidate us". The President of the European Parliament renewed the call for the release of the Turkish human rights activist, Osman Kavala. This came after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today, Saturday, that he had ordered the Foreign Ministry to expel the ambassadors of 10 countries, including the United States, Germany and France, as "persona non grata", for calling for the release of businessman Osman Kavala. The Foreign Ministry summoned the 10 ambassadors on Tuesday over what it described as an "irresponsible statement" calling for a fair and speedy solution to the case of Kavala, who has been imprisoned since late 2017, accused of financing protests and participating in a failed coup, which Kavala denies. "I have ordered our foreign minister to deal as soon as possible with declaring these ten ambassadors persona non grata," Erdogan said during a visit to central Turkey, without giving a specific date for that. He stressed that these ambassadors should "know and understand Turkey," saying that they "lack decency." "They should leave the country if they know it again," he added.
