you know what’s really masterful in two cathedrals? the isolation.

over the course of the episode, every major character talks to jed, while he’s sheltered from almost everyone else. jed is continuously framed against people by the camera. martin sheen does an amazing job of being just completely passive and unavailable to everyone. he even swears off god, the one guy he couldn’t escape as long as he still believed in him.

he’s on his own. jed bartlet is completely on his own. it all hinges on him; everything is stalled, everything is strained, the only thing they really have is speculation. every conversation in the episode feels incomplete because in order to continue, they need him to do something, and he just doesn’t.

he’s completely alone in his head, with his thoughts, while the world holds its breath and waits for him.

and the moment there’s oxygen in the room again is when those first sounds of brothers in arms come on and it all culminates and in a few precise moments, jed’s better angels beat the demons away and he does what he does best - he says just the right words at the right time. 

it’s the ultimate payoff after over half an hour of baited breath and it gets me, how well it’s set up.
