NSCDC nabs 4 suspects for vandalizing electricity cable linking Achebe Airport
The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has arrested four people for vandalising the electricity armoured cable that powers the Chinua Achebe International Airport in Umueri.
The suspects, who reportedly specialise in vandalising armoured wires and other electrical facilities, were apprehended by Corps operatives on November 4, 2023.
The NSCDC State Commandant, Edwin Osuala, who paraded the suspects in Awka, on Friday, said the arrest came as a result of timely and credible intelligence provided to the Corps by a diligent Awka resident.
”The Command received a distress call about 6:30 am on Monday, Nov. 4, 2023, reporting that a group of people were vandalising armoured cable behind the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square Awka.
“Upon the information, operatives of the command swung into action and arrested four suspects with bundles of vandalized armoured electric cable.
The arrested persons, all males, are “Monday Chukwu, aged 37 from Ntezi Ebonyi State, Okwudiri Nnaji, aged 29, from Idodo Nkanu East Enugu State, Agu Ikechukwu, aged 20 from Ehamufu Isiuzo Local Government Area (LGA), Enugu State, and Chinecherem Idoho, from Uboloafor Udenu, Enugu State,” he said.
The State Commandant directed the Investigation and Intelligence Department to activate the mechanism for apprehending other fleeing suspects in connection with the crime.
He said after thorough investigation, all suspects would be arraigned in court.
Osuala frowned at the operations of power installation vandals in the state, who he described as economic saboteurs and warned that anyone found would face the full force of the law.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections next year, there are growing fears that the elections, especially in the South-eastern part of the country, might be under a serious threat.
This is even more as the rate of attacks on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, offices and facilities have become more intense as the general elections draw close.
Our sources reported the recent Monday attack on the INEC office in Owerri, Imo State, in which four persons were killed, including a police officer.
The attack followed barely one week after unknown gunmen attacked another INEC office in the same State located at Oru West Local Government Area.
Within the last four months, the commission’s facilities across the country have been attacked for a record eight times.
Although the attacks on the commission’s offices have been occurring across the country, it is evident the INEC has become a prime target of attacks in the South-eastern States, raising fears regarding the forthcoming general elections in the zone.
Most of the attacks on INEC facilities around the South-east have been largely attributed to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
However, IPOB has repeatedly denied their involvement in the attacks.
Enugu
Attacks on INEC offices in Enugu State peaked in 2021.
Recall that on May 13 and 23, 2021, the INEC offices in Udenu and Igboeze South LGAs, respectively, were attacked by unknown gunmen/hoodlums, vandalising the commission’s facilities.
Again, in September 2021, the INEC’s office in Awgu Local Government Area of the State was put on fire by unknown persons.
Recently in July 2022, some suspected arsonists also destroyed the commission’s office in the Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the State.
Ebonyi
Early last year, around May 2021, two offices of the INEC were set on fire by unknown gunmen in Ebonyi State. The offices were located in Izzi and Ezza North local government areas of the State, respectively.
Within the same month, the INEC office in Ebonyi LGA office of the State was also razed down by unknown gunmen.
Another attack on the commission’s office in Izzi Local Government Area of the State was recorded in November 2022.
Imo
Imo State has largely had its own share of the attacks on the INEC offices across the country.
The Monday attack on the Commission’s State headquarters at Owerri is the third in the last 12 days.
Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State blamed the attack on unpopular politicians who are afraid of losing elections.
The incident followed the earlier attacks on INEC offices at Orlu and Oru West LGA offices on 1st December and 4th December 2022, respectively.
Recall that in May 2021, a building belonging to the INEC was also set ablaze in the State. This excludes the attack at its Ahiazu Mbaise LGA office in the same month.
However, perturbed by the incessant attacks on its offices and facilities across the country, which could harm the conduct of the 2023 general elections, at a meeting with stakeholders in Lagos last week, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, lamented that the electoral body had lost so many of its facilities.
“In the last four months, five of our offices were attacked, buildings damaged, and materials were destroyed across the country.
“It is worrisome for us because we lost over 1990 ballot boxes, 399 voting cubicles, 24 generators, and quite a number of PVCs (65,699 in one incident), among many other items.
“These attacks must stop and the perpetrators prosecuted. Our responsibility is to conduct elections, and I want to assure Nigerians that we will recover from these attacks and that the lost materials will be replaced.
“We will continue to work with security agencies, traditional and community leaders, and well-meaning Nigerians to stop the attacks. But the ultimate solution is to arrest and prosecute the culprits,” he said.
Speaking to DAILY POST concerning the issue, a chieftain of the Labour Party, LP, in
Enugu State, Hon Malachy Okey Onyechi, lamented that the ugly trend is capable of thwarting the nation’s democracy, saying it poses a great danger.
Hon Onyechi, who is also the party’s State House of Assembly candidate for Nsukka West Constituency in the forthcoming general election, urged the security agencies to beef up security around INEC offices and facilities, especially in the Southeast zone.
He said, “To me, it poses a lot of danger. It is an indication that some politicians are desperate to thwart our democracy and make sure that they win by all means. They are the people behind all these devilish acts.
“The recent one that happened in Imo State, you heard the governor of the State, Hope Uzodimma, telling us that politicians are behind the hoodlums vandalising INEC offices.
“I believe some of the politicians who want to thwart the process of democracy are the ones behind it, and it will definitely affect the INEC’s and federal government’s plan to ensure a free, fair, and credible election.
“But what we are just saying is that – we are urging the security agencies to beef up security around INEC offices and facilities.
“I give kudos to the security agencies for apprehending those involved in the perpetration of the ungodly act at the Imo state INEC office. They were able to track down the perpetrators.
“If other security agencies in different States could rise up to the challenge, I believe the dangers being posed by these hoodlums will be averted early enough, and we will have a smooth and free election.”

Nigerian student becomes first African to win 108-year-old award, gets $10,000
A Nigerian student studying in the United States, Noel Ifeanyi Alumona, has won the 2022 AFS Award for Young Global Citizens, and became the first African to win the prize since its inception in 1914. The award was presented during the International Youth Day organized by the United Nations Global Communications Department, the AFS Intercultural Programs and The Youth Assembly at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Noel, who is studying in Vanderbilt University, United States, smiled home with a cash prize of $10,000 in recognition of his vigorous campaign to end violence against women and girls through proper orientation of boys on responsible behaviour. The AFS Award for Young Global Cituizens recognizes the work of young people around the world for their commitment in improving the global community and contribute to a more just, peaceful, and tolerant world. Aside the star prize winner, Mariana Reyes and Larissa Cevallos emerged second place winners with $2,500 prize award.
Noel, who hails from Enugu State, beat other 500 contestants after a strenuous and rigorous selection process and interviews, from where 10 finalists were selected from over 200 applications. The winner, who is also a 2018 Obama Foundation Fellow of the African Leaders programme, explained that the inspiration for the formation of Boys Champion came in 2018 after his meeting with Barack Obama in Johannesburg as an Obama Foundation Fellow. It was an encounter that transformed his worldview and ignited in him the flaming zeal to make a positive impact in his community.
On October 1, 2018, he formed the Boys Champions as a youth focused group committed to providing safe space for young boys and training them to become part of the solution to ending societal violence and prejudice against women and girls in Nigerian communities. According to him, some obnoxious cultural and religious practices infringe on women’s rights, for which Boys Champion launched the campaign for change.
Noel, who is presently pursuing a graduate degree in Special Education in the United States, said he has remained passionate about youth development, education and more specifically on ways to improve access to quality education in underserved communities. As part of the mentorship programme targeted at youths, he said his organization would organize a leadership conference in Enugu State where speakers from the United Nations, Harvard University and Vanderbilt University would tutor participants on leadership. He urged the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, government agencies and corporate organisations to key into the project for youth empowerment and training of future leaders.
Recounting his past experiences in his community, Udenu LGA, Enugu State, Noel explained that he spent over five years in classroom teaching, monitoring and evaluating students’ performance. He expressed on the poor attention given to Special Education of kids with Learning Disabilities and Emotional Behavioral Disturbances. He warned that the neglect of children with special needs and other vulnerable groups does not guarantee an inclusive education system, which every country should aspire to achieve.
He disclosed that he and Chike Stf Nwoke, a PhD student at Carleton University in Canada, were collaborating on a research paper to analyse the first ever 2015 policy document and the level of implementation on special education in Nigeria. He said critical questions needed to be asked in order to chart the way forward for special education in the country.
“At the moment, Nigeria is at the end of the bridge on global rankings for special education support. I am happy to continue to offer my voice to conversations that will inspire change in Nigeria, Africa and across the world. As I always say, Africans will change Africa and I am happy to lead that change from my own community through Boys Champions and Hope for African Children,” he said.
As a Community Development Specialist, Noel told journalists that he would remain resolute in his commitment towards improving access to education for vulnerable children, children displaced by Boko Haram and insurgent attacks, as well as millions of out-of-school children in Nigeria. He promised to always look out for victims of disasters and violent extremism in Nigeria through his Hope for African Children, a community-based organization he founded in 2013 that increases access to education for children with disabilities and vulnerable children in underserved communities. His nonprofit organization, Boys Champion, has continued to work closely with over 4,900 young volunteers in Nigeria on issues of gender-based violence, peace-building, special education, youth value development, and childcare improvement.
Noel is an Obama Foundation Fellow, United States Institute of Peace Fellow, and United Nations Youth Assembly Delegate. He is also a recipient of the AFS Award for Young Global Citizens at the United Nations in NYC, African Youth Award, Nigerian Goodwill Ambassador Award, Volunteer of the Year Award by Appreciate Africa Network, Beijin, China.
While celebrating Noel’s global award, the immediate past Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Sullivan Chime, described the recognition as noble, while assuring that the future belongs to Enugu youths. Perhaps Chime was right in seeing the future in the hands of younger and visionary leaders with a selfless disposition to serve the people and recreate a better world.

And if you're looking for the rest of the Grishaverse series I'd suggest taking a look at @forlaget_alvilda, highly recommend both series. . Have you read any of Bardugo's books? . #Bookstagram #bogblog #udenu #books #bardugo
