#we love learning how to unwhitewash

Do you think BTS would be offended or supportive of seeing their pictures un-whitewashed in blogs like this? I can’t help but feel that they also whitewash their own pictures and it’s not always just their team.
Well, that is a common issue with people of color. Colorism is embedded in our daily lives. So most of us either feel, or others of our ethnicity feel, that we won’t be beautiful/valued as people unless we are light-skinned.
I used to whitewash myself in photos and wear skin lighteners when I was younger. I didn’t stop until I realized after looking at natural/unedited photos of other Asians that I found out how unhealthy hating our bodies was and how deeply it could cut our own self-worth.
We cannot speak for all Asian Media restore blogs. Since not all restore blogs are owned by or co-adminned by E/SE Asian, but here at Sunnyoongi, we are trying to celebrate E/SE Asian skin and trying to get people to understand that we should love BTS as they are. Whether that be pale, average, tan, or dark. That's why we are using references, learning skills in lighting and photography, evaluating and re-evaluating each other’s editing, and posting unedited/minimally edited content just so we can get as accurate of a representation of their natural selves as possible.
Whereas fansites/companies whitewashing them is a forcing a beauty standard upon them without their consent. Of course, this is a different case if they were to whitewash themselves. Because they are dealing with their own definitions of beauty standards and have internalized colorism. So we won’t ever touch pictures that the members personally took of each other nor their selfies as we feel as that is a violation of their consent and privacy.
We want unwhitewashed/unedited photos of BTS to be more commonplace and more widely accepted by the public. So that they can stop hating their own skin. I’m not sure if you know, but members like Taehyung, Hoseok, and Namjoon are the most impacted by colorism. Namjoon was teased for “not looking Korean”, Hobi was given skin lightening creams as gifts by fans, and Taehyung has apologized at least twice to fans for unintentionally tanning his skin and said that his skin looked dirty. And it doesn’t really help when BTS also tease/bully each other for their skin color as well.
We don’t know what BTS think nor can we force them to think a certain way. All we can do is support them as they are, give them privacy, and let them have the consent to what they want to do.

Hello, as a little side note:Namjoon has stated he doesn’t like certain filters on vlive and claimed “I look like Dracula [...] I look too pale [...] It doesn’t look like me.” At least, that is what the translations said. So I’m sure he is aware of certain white-washing aspects and does not support such acts.
As Admin Matte stated above, there are times where they use filters on selfies to lighten their skin, but again, we do not touch/restore such pictures. Some members use the app, others don’t or rarely do. It’s up to them really. Regardless I find them all handsome, be it snow app or not.
Again, I hope they realize a lightening app is not really needed. If that is what makes them happy, I am not against them using it. After all, this is the Love Yourself era, this message should be for them as well.

i used to love this blog but honestly ? ive seen bts in person multiple times now and you're restores are way too light. whats the point in editing pictures if your not actually gonna edit them right? i started following you cause i hated whitewashing but now i am unfollowing cause everytime youre on my dash i just see you whitewashing bts. to the point where im triggered. i hope you grow the courage to restore them to their real skintones instead of halfassing it. they are darker than you show.
Is this a joke? Honestly this is the funniest ask we have ever gotten, and you definitely managed to surprise the hell out of us.
Well first of all, if you really did like our blog that much AND cared about whitewashing that much, I am pretty sure you would have done yourself a favor and checked our faq and explanations page, since we do talk in detail about numerous aspects regarding whitewashing and restoring, and obviously the most obvious and basic one being lighting and how it affects skintone.
Second of all, as we have already stated before, yes, you’re right, we don’t restore them accurately enough sometimes, meaning, we couldn’t make them as dark/deep as it should have been, and that’s because of all the editing done to the picture by the fansite. We don’t want to compromise the picture’s quality and not all previous (done by the fansite) editing can be fully reversed. We literally state in all of our comparison posts that in that particular case, we couldn’t restore it properly. Have you ever even tried to restore a picture by yourself? Do you have any idea how much knowledge is involved? Do you have any idea how hard it can be, how much time you can spend trying to fix a picture? I doubt so, so sit down and learn some manners before telling us to stop halfassing our job. Do you pay us to do this? No, you don’t. You have no right to criticize us like that.
Third of all, when are ya’ll gonna stop parading around with “I’ve seen bts irl before multiple times and they don’t look like that” ? You’re not special. Admin Cherry has seen them last year in Australia, Admin Cloud is going to see them this year in LA, and I have seen them in Brazil four times already, one in 2014, one in 2015 and twice in 2017, and I’m definitely seeing them again this year if they come. I got to look them in the eyes, speak to them and h5 each one of them in 2015. We know what they look like. We know just as much if not more than you do.
And even then, the way you saw them at that specific event(s), at that specific moment(s), is not how they are going to appear for every moment in their lives. There are similar cases, yes, where they will look especially dark, specifically during concert events, but the conditions are not going to be exactly the same at every concert they hold. And the way they look in concerts is not how they would appear as they would in airports, hotel rooms, parks, music shows, red carpet events, photoshoots, etc. And that’s just excluding the fact that some members are getting lighter, while others get darker over time.
We reblog and post hundreds of unwhitewashed content from different sources (such as fansites, official social media, news, broadcastings, magazine photoshoots, etc) literally everyday, and all of those can and perhaps should be used by our visitors to compare to our restores. That way you would be able to tell wether we did a decent job or not.
Lastly, in case it wasn’t clear, we are open to discuss any of our restore’s accuracy as long as you can provide reliable references to prove your point. So if anyone feels our restores are odd looking, just get your references and talk to us about it and we will check the restore and get to a conclusion.
If you supposedly have been putting up with our halfassed whitewashed pictures for so long, why didn’t you try to talk to us before, why send this now? In the form of “hate” no less, instead of just… discussing it?

Hi guys! How's it going? Hope you're doing well. I was just wondering how did you guys get such a nice Tumblr desktop format? I plan on making a blog that posts unwhitewashed pics of idols soon and I'd love to have a nice, glossy looking desktop theme too.
We actually kind of just searched up theme on @theme-hunter and decided on using the theme Lachesis made by @glenthemes. But we also modified it a lot by editing the html ourselves. The icons on the top bar are by saturnthms.
For some of our important pages, we used Glucose by @felinum, which we have also modified by editing the html.
It took us a long while to actually get it the way we wanted it. Admin Gloss planned for the blog design/style as well as edited this photo for our header image, and 95% of customized coding were done by me.
We suggest that if you are starting out, look for a theme that fits what kind of information you want to present. Are your posts going to comprise of all photos? Do you want long text posts to be accessible? Do you want tags to show/be searchable? Do you want topics to be subcategorized? Etc.
Look for the top 3-5 things you want on your blog, because most likely you are not going to find a blog that 100% has everything what you are looking for. So you will have to compromise. Learn a bit of html coding to help flesh out the things you want people to see, it’s the easiest coding languages and USUALLY you can learn what you need by googling it. Also, stay organized, it helps you and your followers.
