on Homura and Hotaru

This was originally part of my immediately previous post about attaching to Homura Akemi out of empathy for Ill Girl struggles, but I cut it off to keep it separate.

I wanted to showcase why I headcanon Homura as having been a major Hotaru Tomoe / Sailor Saturn fan pre-series. Sailor Saturn was “ill socially isolated girl can be a hero-- and be liked by people” validation for me when I was a teen. It was something I grasped in desperate hands and I can see Homura do the same.

I see a lot of parallels in their stories, really. And have made some references in my fic without saying they’re references. And I have a plan for more overt references to this in the future.

spoilers for Sailor Moon “Infinity” Arc ahoy (ohoho~~~)

Hotaru Tomoe has mysterious illnesses. She is ostracized for them and hints of an underlying power that shows up when she is bullied.

She often leaves school early and goes home, which is part of her father’s research lab. Her mom is dead. Her father is secretly a mad scientist possessed by an alien, so he’s not the most attentive dad. His lab assistant-- also evil-- oversteps her bounds a lot. Hotaru resents her.

Hotaru spends a lot of time holed up in her room. Isolated.

Then she meets a cheerful pink-haired magical girl who worries for her, isn’t afraid of her weirdness or powers, doesn’t treat her like a freak, and pretty much immediately assumes they’re friends.

Then it is revealed that Hotaru’s “illness” is left over from surviving a fire that killed her mom and almost killed her dad. She says she has scars. But then it is later revealed that she actually has a cyborg body and her fits are partly “rejection pains.” It’s kinda implied she doesn’t think of herself as human anymore, though I don’t think she uses those exact words.

Then WHOOPS Hotaru is also possessed and loses control of her body as the alien steals it. Her soul stubbornly survives, which is good because the alien eats Chibiusa’s soul and the crystal that is the source of her power.

Hotaru is Very Unhappy about that.

And that was before the thing using her body devoured the souls of four other Sailor Senshi.

From here out, there is a lot of parallel imagery and dialogue. And something like an inverse-Madokami self-sacrifice.

The she wakes up as the reincarnated Sailor Saturn, who brings about total death and destruction specifically to spark rebirth.

Saturn has a curious duality with Sailor Moon (and Sailor Chibi Moon) that makes me think of Madokami and Homucifer. It’s something I wanna play with. ;)

I could probably write an extensive study on the parallels and... inversions, I suppose. For now, I’ll just hope you can see them lol. The Infinity Arc is the third part of Sailor Moon Crystal if you want more detail.
