WIBLT #2: Streeeet walkin'!
Here's an oldie.. Night Birds, by Shakatak! This is an album released all the way back in 1982, and it randomly appeared in my Spotify suggestions recently. Been listening to it a lot since, and it's a funky little jazz-pop product of its time.
My favorite on the album has to be Bitch to the Boys, from the lyrics alone it could've caught me, but it's a good product altogether. People now would refer to this as "lo-fi" to an extent, and yeah it's almost got that quality to it. I just adore how unapologetically jazzy it is.

WIBLT 17: The numbering is as messed up as my schedule
Avantasia - Ghostlights The first half of this album is miraculous.  Seriously, the first 5 or 6 songs are all amazing and you should listen to all of them.  The 2nd half is a little weaker, but it's still worth listening too in full. Recommended
Rancid - ...And Out Came the Wolves This album sounds like what would happen if the Clash made ska.  It's a good album, Timebomb is really catchy. Recommended
David Bowie - Heroes This album is interesting.  The first half is more hard rock, but still with a piano feel.  Beauty and the Beast and Heroes are both standout songs and what I remember most about the album.  Then the second half turns ambient, only it feels completely natural and not jarring.  It's a good album, but I'm not sure it's as good as the other few Bowie albums I've heard so far. Recommended
Poor Unfortuante Souls - Heroes Metal covers of Disney songs.  If you like the premise, it's worth checking out.  Personally I liked Friends like Me and He's a pirate the most.  The Let It Go cover was pretty ok... the female vocals were weaker than the male's on Friends Like Me and Let It Go has been covered 5 billion times in the last few years I wish they chose something else.  I'll Make a Man out of you was okay too.  I'm watching these guys, but this ep was a mixed bag. ???
Sonic Youth - Dirty I'm really diggin the vibe from this album.  I'll need to listen to it a few more times, but I'm enjoying it more than Daydream Nation. Recommended
Rabbit Girl - Cloud This album is hard to get into because of the long ambient section towards the start, but after that it picks up and gets more chaosy.  I think Rabbit Girl's releases have gotten better since this album, but it's still full of enjoyable breakcore. Recommended
Primal Fear - Rulebreaker This album has its own sound, but every song feels like a combination of that style and a different band's.  For example, the song about a motercycle felt 30 years out of touch.  There were plenty of good moments, but it never blew me away enough to forget about how derivative it felt. ???
Roonil Wazlib - Putting Fluffy to Sleep Short Folk EP.  Overall it was really good, although I felt Trevor the Toad and Someone's not getting any to be fairly boring.  The production is very lo-fi, so there are some points where the guitar is hard to hear in the mix.  Overall it was solid though. Recommended
Tonks and the Aurors - Tonks for the Memories I liked track 4.  Idk, it felt boring, which is a shamem because it's well produced for a wrock album. It just didn't sound fresh. ???
Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American This album clicked for me when I heard it again.  I enjoyed songs like the title track more than I have in the past, and I was enjoying more of the acoustic stuff on the album. Recommended
Carly Rae Jepson - Emotion A decent combination of outrun and the type of pop you were expecting.  It all sounded good, but I feel like most of the tracks are variations of the same song.  Almost as if they all started as the same song, then had variations made to try and find the "hit" among them.  It was still okay though. ???
The Swedish Shortsnouts - Ett litet agg The guitar player is really good, but I wish that he showed off more. Overall I hear a lot of potential, but Battle Cedrick was the only song that made a lasting impression.  I will listen to their other album now that it's on spotify at some point. ???
The Main Drag - Yours as Fast as Mine I honestly want to know how this album didn't take off more.  It's a great alt rock album with tons of variety in the songs, and of course "Jaggad Gorgeous Winter" and "What's Ur favorite Dinosaur" which are amazing. Recommended
Royal Canterlot Symphonic Metal Orchestra - Fall of an Empire The indiviual parts were good, but they didn't blend well.  Sombra and Luna (I think) had a lot of duets but their voices didn't work well together, even though they were good voices.  Other times the voices didn't work with the insturmentation.  It was well written, but certain parts feel off and so I think it's not as good as moonrise. ???
Herminoe Crookshanks Experience - Penelope A good mesh of folk and light, dreamy pop music.  The emotion is good, and the song writing was generally solid. Recommended
The Darkness - Permission to Land I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOOOVEEEEE, JUSTLISTENTOTHESOUNDOFMYHEART!   Legit, one of the best hair metal albums I've ever heard.  If you like hard rock this is a must listen. Highly Recommended
The Birthday Massacre - Walking with Strangers I'm getting the impression that most TBM albums sound the same, but they write different songs on them, which will make it hard to pick a favorite from them.  This album is normally considered the best, and I liked it too. Recommended
Almanac - Tsar I listened to this foreverago and it's one of my favorite metal albums of the year so far.  However, I don't remmember it enough to tell you anything about it, so just go listen to it. Recommended

What I've Been Listening To- October/November
I know, it's already December, but I've been busy, let me take the time to talk about a couple of favorite releases from 2023.
Autopsy! Good ol' unpretentious death metal, I had a grand time seeing them at Mass Destruction Fest, and while their new stuff isn't doing anything exciting, I'm glad they're still kicking and not just relying on their classics. Even though they totally could.
Baroness! Stone is a major improvement over Gold & Grey, much stronger production and I love how natural Gina fits in with the band. They're just as good as ever live, too.
Tomb Mold! This one did not disappoint, and if they need another 3 years to make something as strong, so be it!

What I've Been Listening To!
Not the most exciting month, but I've had a few things going on in rotation.
Drain! Great band, love their follow-up to California Cursed and can see it rank high in my year-end list.
Melvins! I see that they're coming here in September with Boris, which sounds like a good time to me. Will definitely try to make it happen.
Pupil Slicer! Another 2023 highlight, I love these guys and hope to see them eventually. Also, I should probably play Outer Wilds...

What I've Been Listening To- March/April
Not much, been down lately, and especially have not had time for new shit. Just some favorites, like Sabbath and Steely Dan/solo Fagen. Sorry this took so long and I don't have more to say.

What I'm Listening To- Feburary/March
Kinda a light month, but there's been good shit going on.
Devil Master! The Decibel Tour was another hit, and I especially enjoyed getting to see these guys again, who I haven't since their first album dropped. Love their first wave black metal throwback!
Midnight! Really liking their new album and still spinning their other stuff, always a good time. Hoping it won't be too long until they tour again, I missed their last few dates here. Still hate that I was sick when they opened for Mercyful Fate

What I've Been Listening To- January/February
Alright, back on my shit.
Cathedral! it seems like every band who's broken up over the past decade or so is reuniting, whether you want them to or not (hi, Slayer!), but one band I'd like to see a return from is MIA. Lee Dorian forever.
Ilsa! Damn good band, spun these guys a lot around pandemic time, and now's a good time to get back to them.
Minor Threat! Still the best.

What I've Been Listening To- September/October
I saw Cannibal Corpse tonight and that was good, but I'm still sad and that's bad. So I haven't been spinning much tonight.
Mahavishnu Orchestra! I always like having a little jazz in my life, Jon McLaughlin's guitar playing is unbelievable.
Suffocation! And a little death, because of course. I'm still spinning the new Incantation and even Immolation's latest from last year, but these guys still get it too!

What I’ve Been Listening To- March/April
First of all, apologies for no post last month. I was in a bad state, and by the time I would have started one, I finally broke my COVID-free streak. But now I’m up for it.
Botch! Unbelievable that they’ve finally reunited, and they’ll be here later this year. Cannot miss them.
Dream Unending! Really good death/doom, both albums rotate among my playlist somewhat often.
Isis! I never get enough of these guys, even though they split over a decade ago. None of their LPs have missed.
Mizmor! I just love their sound, including their recentish crossover with Thou. I had to miss this year’s Decibel Metal & Beer Fest in Philly, and they were one of my biggest disappointments to not see.

What I've Been Listening To- August/September
Sorry I'm late, it's been a sad month for me, had to bail out and get a refund for one of my dream shows, but life goes on.
Atheist! Been on a Florida death metal kick after having to leave my Cynic show. Lame, but at least the incredible music from my home is still available to listen to.
Clutch! Missing them after seeing them last year and still spinning their new one. The boys still got it, but we all know that, right?
Incantation! Great death metal as always, this new album has me hyped for their Mass Destruction Fest performance.
Uada! Saw them for the third time the other night and they're as good as ever. Love their new album.

What I’ve Been Listening To- December/January
Had some change in plans and a very busy start back at work, but music will always keep me going! Especially death metal.
Castrator! Saw these ladies kick ass opening for Exhumed last month, and I’m going to see them again at the Carolina Chainsaw Festival in May. Stoked.
Malignant Altar! Okay, was nobody going to tell me that they broke up? Boo on you.
Obituary! New album rips! I also saw them last month, and they were able to keep this a secret while still putting on a great set. Looking forward to seeing them again.

What I’ve Been Listening To- August/September
I’m back from my trip to LA, and I had the best time! I definitely made time to stop in Amoeba, which was overwhelming, but I made out like a bandit. Here’s what I listened to while going around the city, as well as before and after (minus Demi Lovato)
Castrator! Awesome all-female death metal band, which seems to be blowing up in the past few years. Obviously there’s Nervosa, as well as Crypta, and I’m sure there’s even more. But this stuff is good and has me excited for more. I’ll be seeing them open for Exhumed later this year, and I’m stoked.
Faith No More! There’s never a bad time for Faith, a top tier band as far as I’m concerned.
Immolation! Still stoked over their most recent, and I’ve also been going back to their earlier stuff. The Failures for Gods album especially rips. I’ll be seeing them open for Cannibal Corpse soon, I think, which should be a good time.
Pig Destroyer! Really hoping to see them again soon. I know they’re doing Decibel’s Metal & Beer Fest in Detroit, which is looking doubtful for me to join, but they’re my main interest there.
