Alternative and colorful wine review… …………………………………………………… “There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.” Vladimir Ilyich Lenin .………………………………………………… This damsel wine was in no distress…she had a dark rose blush in the glass... but not shy at all. Right off the first pour, an attractive damson scent filled the glass. And I don’t mean a sweet plum, but one with a sharp edge. My fellow tasters noted too some licorice and a citrus ping with a lingering pink rose petal nose. And sipping, she was all damson again, tart, tense fruit. And the damson evolved into pomegranate with some eucalyptus and gooseberry with some tart blackberry and fig leaf astringency. It felt like there must’ve been some cedar wood shavings, soaked in the bottle and I feel like my wine glass had been crafted from mountain stream pebbles with that crisp, stony kind of mouth feel. She was biting, but still smooth enough in her finish. The fig leaf flavor stayed put. I kept coming back to the glass, sipping, like getting pecked on the cheek multiple times, doing my best to really figure out her flavor profile. With a harrumph I exhaled and blew the fig leaf away and all was revealed. I’m reminded of being called in front of the high school principal, and to this day, authority figures still make my hair stand on end. But this is a benevolent matriarch, with bounty to share. She had a dark garnet ruby rim, a mature look. Her nose was a fruitful bouquet of boysenberry and anise with a leathery snap. Despite her maturity, she still had plenty of fruit to offer. Very busty. Plums and figs and blueberry. Clove and anise spiced up the mouth more subtly. The plush mid mouth feel had an oaky structure with a bit of mulch mixed in. But she felt big in your mouth…lots of complexity going on. Decades on, this matriarch wine remains supple and full bodied and bouncing. You could tell she was mature, and yet still had plenty of fruit, forward. It was the background kaleidoscope of flavors and scents that kept you mesmerized. I picture this matriarch relaxing on lake Cuomo, and I would love to take her motorboating ;-). Mischievous wine review, Let’s go!!.. .………………………………………………… One man with courage makes a majority Andrew Jackson 1767-1845 .………………………………………………… Somehow, you could just sense a good experience was coming. Like a runway model this wine strutted straight at you from a distance… She had a flowing, tousled look in the glass, dark tresses with violet highlights. As she past by, a zephyr of jam honeysuckle fragrance hit home. Hmmm. I think she winked at me. As we sipped, she gave us the full sell. “Very scrumptious!”, said one. There was grippy black currant juice flowing through volcanic rock, with a spill of red sweet pepper. Some daphne odora blossom and cedar shavings lingered. The oaky tannin mid mouth was soft and smooth. To quote a fellow taster, “She is a supermodel with a really high IQ”. And this was meant only as a top flight complement…of course. Her long legs disappeared down the runway. Her finish was a slow glide, leaving us awed, looking for a replay. Mischievous wine review here: .………………………………………………….. “Time spent laughing is time spent with the gods.” Japanese proverb. .………………………………………………….. This supermodel wine strutted forward late into a spectacular evening of wine tasting (Thank you RW). Though our eyes may have already glazed over, everything perked up. Maybe we were not paying adequate attention, but she hit us in the nose, demanded our attention! She was an iron fist in a velvet glove. She had a menthol intensity, dark blackberry with mulch and nougat aromas. The supermodel strutted with very high heels. Did I taste cinnamon and cedar? With some tart plum in a tobacco field ? I’m sure there were black currants and blueberry, and a little teaspoon of potting soil and brick dust. I wondered whether the supermodel wine would make me work…make me work for the full experience. But no…she was so easy…so easy on the eyes and so easy on the nose and so easy on la bouche. We were all relatively quiet, sipping this beautiful wine, at ease and easy, enjoying the experience. Mischievous wine review here: .………………………………………………… “ We are all mortal until the first kiss and the second glass of wine.” – Eduardo Galeano .………………………………………………… All of our heads turned when this lady wine sashayed into the room. She had presence. And a very low cut blouse. Her bouquet was blooming, like a big forcefield around the glass. I dipped in and entered the bouquet zone! There was a dusty graphite Kirsch to her nose and a more subtle incense wafting close, like in a Moroccan bazaar. On diving in, there was an aromatic, smoky Cassis, black fruit, truffle and cigar box bouche. Crushed river rock with some grippy dandelion, or maybe arugula leaf held the midmouth together. Lingered like a late summer sunset. I believe our host, R.W., quoted that it was like drinking liquid silk… She had such virile behavior for her age. I let her talents do the talking with her low and slow rumble like an elegant Enzo motor. She was definitely out of my league. But she didn’t care, and was happy to make an intimate moment linger between us. Cue Robert Palmer and 🎶simply irresistible 🎶. She knew the tricks, had the look, had the curves, and was happy to share her talents. She hung in the decanter with some gravitas, more weighty than average, the curves of her bustier and bottom generous. She had such dark eyes, bottomless depths. She was a Reubens muse. I was stricken by her perfumed nose and so paralyzed that I forgot to think about it. I dove in for the first kiss, and was not disappointed. Cassis, nutmeg and licorice floral notes enveloped the room. But lost in my embrace, silky notes traversed my palate with plum and honeycomb and caramel. She was bone china smooth, maybe with some dusty Napa loam sprinkled in. Polished marble. The finish was long and smooth like a tussled, flowing lion’s mane. We all sipped in silence, trying to find just the right descriptive words. Maybe there was a little animal growl of approval. And I stared and pondered, a little too long, with obvious relish. She had flow like a billowing silk dress that reveals as much as it hides. Churchill .………………………………………………… Yes, I love the Austrian flag on the wine cap. But hey, there is something strong and stylish about the bottle and the label too. And, a grape named blaufränkisch has so much kredibility. There’s something bullet -looking about this bottle of wine. The wine has a wonderful purple hue to it. Purple midnight. And the scene is set. Her nose is all blackberry and currant cordial. But a curious urgency, makes me abandon her nose and go straight for the lips! Someone mentions being in an Austrian mountain glade and plucking blackberries from the vine, perfectly ripened, lovely combination of bright underripe and ripe fruit, a Schnaps-like mineral spirit smoothly penetrating the palate. Mountain brook pebbles and fern lent an organic layer. And back to the bullet-shaped bottle… this was such an eager drinking wine, not some twirl, sniff and sip deluxe. The blackberry prominence was hidden by a chiffon veneer…think of cherry on top kind of image. When we own our stories, we get to write a brave new ending.” Brené Brown .………………………………………………… In this midwinter, we pull a cork on this lady wine and immediately find ourselves in a dusty Vermont ski lodge; maybe the library surrounded by ancient books, a slight burned wood smell with the sniff. But there was some scented candle, like rose petals and wrinkled cherry skin mixing around as well. The open fire burned and crackled, and we were pink-cheeked with anticipation. Almost in unison, we declared this lady wine was a cherry hurricane. But I was also gob-smacked by some punchy strawberry and red plum (not purple). There was essence of vanilla and licorice with a lovely, red delicious apple finish. I was still savoring the heavy hit on my lips and palate. Someone in the background mentioned mint, and some belt buckle structure and a little bit of wet, sandy dog’s paw and fire-warmed cedar. But what a hit on the kisser! I let the she-wine coat my lips and was entranced by the fruitful smacking she gave me. This girl had smooching talents. Lilac pour, but a little garnet in the glass. Had to sniff hard to get a good sense of nose, so impolite in front of the French lady! With more time, there was a synthetic lilac nose, like hard candy. And a dandelion raw quality. Out of the gate, we tasted organics first: raw chestnuts and oak. Fruit then wood; Our lady wine had a bit of a bipolar attitude. Strawberry syrup finally came through, mixed with brambles and jello marshmallow. She finished with a flutter of rose petals. William Shakespeare, in Julius Caesar …………………………………………………….. I was in this dark and shadowy cellar, think Scooby doo scary cellar, and our task was to pick a wine from the past. Well, we picked a young lady wine, not too dusty, and took her into the light of day. But she fit the old soul character with a deep, dark mountain stream look, tresses flowing. Maybe the contrast with the platinum white mountain snow that we had been skiing on made it look more intense. Some kind of magic happens when a lady’s perfume is so enchanting. Maybe the contrast with the crisp mountain air that we had been drinking in all day made it more dramatic. This was the smell of mountain fruit, bright grape with lingering cellar ozone. Our lady wine from the cellar took us back to summer months where ripe grape met tincture of cinnamon bark and some tinderbox. She sprinkled some nutmeg and eucalyptus ground with an earthenware pestle into the mix. But the more we drank and got to know this lady wine, the more she exposed her ample fruits.
