Alternative and colorful wine review… …………………………………………………… “There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.” Vladimir Ilyich Lenin .………………………………………………… This damsel wine was in no distress…she had a dark rose blush in the glass... but not shy at all. Right off the first pour, an attractive damson scent filled the glass. And I don’t mean a sweet plum, but one with a sharp edge. My fellow tasters noted too some licorice and a citrus ping with a lingering pink rose petal nose. And sipping, she was all damson again, tart, tense fruit. And the damson evolved into pomegranate with some eucalyptus and gooseberry with some tart blackberry and fig leaf astringency. It felt like there must’ve been some cedar wood shavings, soaked in the bottle and I feel like my wine glass had been crafted from mountain stream pebbles with that crisp, stony kind of mouth feel. She was biting, but still smooth enough in her finish. The fig leaf flavor stayed put. I kept coming back to the glass, sipping, like getting pecked on the cheek multiple times, doing my best to really figure out her flavor profile. With a harrumph I exhaled and blew the fig leaf away and all was revealed. Although Zinfandel is one of the most popular wine grapes grown in California, (and for a while thought to be native to the US), it’s origins are in Croatia where it’s known as Tribidrag. I received this Lodi George Phillips Cellars Zinfandel in a shipment from Wine Insiders. After a quick splash decanting and swirling, the wine started really expressing itself. A bouquet of chocolate covered black cherries, vanilla, and pepper rushed up to the nose and palate. Medium to long spicy finish. The GPC Zinfandel was a delicious wine bottle to share a lively conversation to. Opened a bottle from Sonoma (bottled in 2016). when I visited Sonoma in that year was I got a son also first time meeting the father I met last night. Tonight's elixir is this bottle of wine purchased on a recent Northen California wine country getaway trip: The latest under $50-priced find directly from the winery on a recent getaway - 2021 St. Clair Brown Winery & Brewery Sauvignon Blanc White Wine: a faux cork, mellow yellow color, sweet honeysuckle tropical aroma, light body, honey supple sweet tropical flavor, crisp finish, slight tart green apple papaya tropical aftertaste, and low astringency. Paired with homecooked baked mahi mahi on a bed of romaine lettuce, homegrown tomatoes, and a balsamic vinegar & olive oil dressing. I’m reminded of being called in front of the high school principal, and to this day, authority figures still make my hair stand on end. But this is a benevolent matriarch, with bounty to share. She had a dark garnet ruby rim, a mature look. Her nose was a fruitful bouquet of boysenberry and anise with a leathery snap. Despite her maturity, she still had plenty of fruit to offer. Very busty. Plums and figs and blueberry. Clove and anise spiced up the mouth more subtly. The plush mid mouth feel had an oaky structure with a bit of mulch mixed in. But she felt big in your mouth…lots of complexity going on. Decades on, this matriarch wine remains supple and full bodied and bouncing. You could tell she was mature, and yet still had plenty of fruit, forward. It was the background kaleidoscope of flavors and scents that kept you mesmerized. I picture this matriarch relaxing on lake Cuomo, and I would love to take her motorboating ;-).
