i keep seeing that post about how frustrating the buff guy -> petite girl type genderbending is, and i wanted to add my two cents regarding the addition of ‘just swap pronouns and don’t change the design’ approach because i think these are two sides of the same coin, as they both fail to really delve into what i think is the most interesting aspect of this design exercise.

the reason i find genderbending to be such a fun and interesting challenge is because, if you actually want to be good at it and put thought into it, you have to really consider the character’s canon gender expression and think about what it means to them and how it reflects in their outward appearance and presentation.

is this male character buff because he likes to work out / be strong, or does he aspire to achieve conventional heteronormative male beauty?

is this female character a tomboy because she likes to express herself in a more masculine way, or is she doing it to fight gender norms?

the answers to those questions should produce very different designs!

this website loves to say that gender is a spectrum, but sometimes i genuinely wonder if people actually understand what that means. 

gender expression, much like gender, is also a spectrum, which is why keeping the character exactly the same won’t always work, in the same way that just making the character conventionally attractive won’t always work. but sometimes, a buff dude would actually just be a hot girl. lady bane, however, would 100% look exactly the same.

sometimes i cant wrap my brain around the fact that Feng Xin ascended through pure martial might and what that implies

like sure in the simplest way my brain understands "feng xin = strong man, strong man = strong god"

but like? martial might is more than just brute strength, it's not just skill with weapons, and hand to hand combat... but it's understanding battle tactics and formations, having the ability to execute said tactics successfully etc etc

Mu Qing didn’t want to have any kind of sex with any of the people in the pictures he swiped through. Ugly. Ugly. Obvious catfish. Ugly. Old. Ugly.

Mu Qing’s fingers hovered over his phone, stopping just in time before irretrievably swiping away. This profile was simple; only two photos. The man’s face was strategically cropped out of both, except for a glimpse of a straight jawline and pointed chin. The first photo offered a glimpse of a tan and muscled chest under a partially unbuttoned white shirt. The second was muscled arms and a tight black t-shirt and an anonymizing black baseball cap. 

Unfortunately for him, Mu Qing recognized this man. 

Crown Prince Xie Lian was the first exception to his stance on people being too ugly to date. 

The second exception was the Crown Prince’s bodyguard, Feng Xin, whose name he only knew from listening to palace gossip. 

Feng Xin was broader in the chest and sharper in the jawline than the prince, with a darker complexion and a sterner face. Some of the palace gossip said he had been chosen for his looks rather than his ability to keep anyone safe, but that was hard to prove one way or another when Xie Lian’s public record was free of incidents. Some of Mu Qing’s coworkers said Feng Xin was the Crown Prince’s secret boyfriend, while others whispered about a scandalous relationship with a prostitute, which didn’t seem likely when he also demonstrably refused to make eye contact with women. 

Mu Qing had seen him walk through the palace hallways often enough, and stolen enough admiring glances when he did, to recognize his dating app profile despite the fake name of “Nan Feng.”

tgcf is like if xie lian was faced with the trolley problem every single day and every day he said "i'll choose a third option!" and that option was throwing himself in front of the trolley to stop it but instead it flips over and kills/maims everyone on both tracks and xie lian himself
