The IRL concept of girlbossing aside, I’ve come around to the idea that nothing Prospera did was that much better or worse than any other powerful player in that universe. Gundam worlds are bleak and bad, and she behaved accordingly, which was, well, bleak and bad. The language of disability is up to those living that experience, so I’m cautious when I say that Prospera’s character leads me to believe that she’s likely unhappy with her body’s condition. She did some unforgivable things, and I like to believe that she’s chosen to live the rest of her life bearing the burden of that sin. No isolation in a jail cell, but the time with people who love her and can give her avenues for accountability.

I’m so impressed with Suletta and Mio’s radical commitment to love Eri and Prospera, because I certainly wouldn’t be that strong of character. It makes me love the both of them so much more and feel a little proud!

the last note there. I love how complex these mother/daughter relationships were allowed to be. As someone who has cut off a deeply problematic parent and is often *very* forthcoming with my positive experiences with going no contact, I tend to bristle at forgiveness narratives. this felt very different though. I’m reminded of the women who left the Westboro Baptist Church and have bravely and vocally stood against their mother. they’ve noted often that they still love her and have positive memories they hold, but will not engage with a bigot and will actively challenge her bigotry in a public way. I think I am always just moved and astounded by how complicated love can be and how we express it. I am just very proud of children of mothers who define those relationships and expressions of love on their own terms.

The funniest part of The Witch from Mercury's ending is that Prospera just gets to be Farmland Meemaw.

Although, in writing this post, I think I've come to realize that the reason she doesn't get arrested is like... there's nothing that actually ties her to anything. The Assembly League had enough information to start an investigation, but couldn't really get past the start because of how uncooperative Belmeria was at first. Quiet Zero and Aerial both dissolved into space dust, so there was no physical evidence to connect her to Quiet Zero or even Quinnharbor. She also never made any megalomaniacal announcement of her intention, so all they have to go off is Suletta telling the Assembly League inspector her mom was there, which she could just as easily be like "uh, I was wrong!"

And look at her, she's just a lil' old Farmland Meemaw in an oversized cardigan and neckwarmer because she's a little chilly, she's harmless.
