Thinking about Ed in the gravy basket and his three reasons for living.

Thinking about the glimpses we get of Ed as a child; living in a cold and drafty shack with insufficient clothing, eating whatever they could afford to, with a dad who punished him for being "soft" (no doubt standing in for a much stronger word).

Ed's formative years he was always cold, hungry and being told he would never have love.

I love how big Ed's emotions are.

I love that he feels things so intensely. When he's excited, his whole body is bouncy and wiggly, his gestures big and his entire face lighting up. When Stede agreed to run away with him in s1e9, the way he has to squirm around and look over his shoulder because he just can't contain the excitement breaks my heart. When he's upset, his pursed lips and his crinkly eyebrows make him look the most pitiful anyone has ever looked ever. You can tell why he had to have the beard - the guy's face is an open book!

I love that he has such a big, vulnerable, loving heart. I love that he'll do anything for love, and he gets tears in his eyes when he argues with his boyfriend, and he knew he had to go make sure Stede was okay after Calypso's Birthday. I can just imagine him as a new captain, having to carefully hide his facial expressions so he could only let out his joy or fear or heartbreak where no one could see him, because he just feels everything so much.

And, most of all, I love that now he's safe to feel things, and show his emotions with all their intensity, and he never has to worry about being judged for it again.

#it's one of my favourite things about him as well #also something something toxic masculinity #guys aren't supposed to be emotional #the ideal guy society paints for us and punishes us for not being is stoic and often unemotional #but ofmd gives us a protagonist and immediately tells us how cool he is #and he's also a guy who giggles and does happily little wriggles and who cries easily #who doesn't soldier on through his big sad emotions but who hides in a bathtub or a blanket fort #who has a full on breakdown and gets to engage with his emotions in a coma hallucination #near death experience dreams aren't uncommon in media #but in other shows they might have been about duty or guilt or whatever but here in ofmd the dream is about Ed's deepest fears and feelings #and in the next episode when he's healing and finally in a better mind place we get to see him giggle again and cannonball into the water #and we get to see him shy and vulnerable with Stede when they have their second kiss #it's like someone looked at all this nonsense about men and emotions and decided they're going the exact other way with Ed #and I love them for it #I also love Ed #ofmd #ofmd meta #ed teach

Beginning to suspect that they cut the boyfriends/zaddy/catboy scene simply because it took away too much from the intended emotional weight of Izzy's death. With every scond of bts footage I see I keep thinking "okay, so this is why Izzy said he wanted to go, he had to listen to Ed call Stede his zaddy and then ramble stream-of-consciousness about how Zheng was like three super cool stealthy cats." It makes it too easy to understand why his will to live drained from his body. If they'd kept it all in then everyone would've been nodding along when he died like "yeah this is probably what he would've wanted"

I think we need to again appreciate how Stede Bonnet took Ed telling him “don’t say you love me” and both respected that AND somehow managed to say something even more romantic and perfectly attuned to what Ed needed to hear.

I guess the thing about the discourse I'll never get is how it is so, so easy to love Ed.

Like, the text of the show is so extremely sympathetic to him. Obviously not everyone has the same taste but readings of the show that don't like Ed and treat him with sympathy are actively going against the text. We're supposed to love him. He says he's not a good person and he's unlovable and we're supposed to be sad for how much he's hurting and wanting to help him because we know that's not true.

OFMD really takes us by the hand and it shows us the most lovable man ever and it says "this guy is so scared he's unlovable that he's going to try to drive away the people who love him, he's not going to think life is worth living, but he's gonna be okay because he's so, so incredibly loved." And yeah if you miss that somehow then I think you've missed the point of the show.
